Words for the Sri Lanka Tourist Office
By Indran Amirthanayagam
The King Cobra slides
through our jungles,
and tucked in bushes
by the riverbanks
the grand Kabaragoya
holds court among lizards—
but if you want to swim
at Mount Lavinia, or fly kites
on Galle Face Green, or ride
horse carts in the Jaffna peninsula
of your ancestors, or bear a child
in Colombo General Hospital,
or sleep in Cinnamon Gardens
under a mango tree,
or beg in the Borella Market,
or ride for historical reasons
on patrol boats in the Bay,
or stilt-fish off Matara down South,
just remember here everywhere
there is only man burning
and woman burning
here everywhere
in shallow graves
in deep graves
floating out of salt water
washing down the sands
the dead have tongues
the dead have ears
tongues are speaking to ears
What are they saying?
What are they saying?
Tell us, brown bear
bolting out of your cave.
Tell us, leopard
leaning on your branch.
Tell us, flamingos.
Bend your necks
and pour wine pour wine
Hoopoes, kingfishers,
cranes, have you got your messages
on the bill, are you ready
to sing? Are you going to sing?
Monsoon.
Are you going to sing?
Monsoon.
Are you going to sing?
Monsoon. Monsoon.

What I'm afraid of, Tumblr, is that if I tell my boss that the ATO correspondence is up to shit or say I'm struggling or mention that everyone keeps bothering me or anything else, then she'll just deal with it in the /wrong way/. I don't know what the solution is but I know she won't be able to help because what I want isn't possible and I know that and I know I don't have an excuse for only charging $100 plus GST for a BAS, I know I did the wrong thing, I just felt using the timesheets was too much of a jump ($190 X 2.5 hours) compared to the previous invoice and
#I'm just#i don't like the way really guy pressures me to give him the stuff for the bank and post office because there's less of a queue going early#then he doesn't even go there early and goes around lunch time#i don't like that woolworths guy finishes a super fund but doesn't print financials or anything & i just have to /work out/ what to include#The accountants don't print the financials for the file so i have to do it and there's files galore that I'm yet to fix up and#if Jenette saw the state of her old desk.... I know she's gone and wouldn't care any more but if she saw it ...#Just hypothetically#i hate the way the sri Lankan guys want to use the prefill function for the individuals because they're lazy so they use Jenette's computer#and they mess it all up#i hate the way hieu complains#Tony says hieu always complains in Vietnamese but the little shit complains in English as well!!!!!!#i hate the way i cry over it all#ok I'll go#what's stopping me staying up to read all night#please#my next step is booking a gp appointment and getting a referral for a therapist i promise i will just for someone to talk to#Just rort the system tbh#my neurotypical self can't handle a normal job and I'll waste resources that could be used for an actual sick person

“You considered neither ‘faggot’ nor ‘homo’ nor ‘queer’ as slurs because you were none of these things. You were simply a handsome man who enjoyed beautiful boys” – The Seven Moon of Maali Almeida, Shehan Karunatilaka I feel this quote is simple yet stunningly beautiful (not for its homosexuality content) because it points to the meaninglessness of naming and defining things and how far names and categorizations could stray from the truth. It mocks compartmentalizations and isms and rips straitjackets. Your emotions and the essence of your existence are dynamic and fluctuating every moment as the universe itself (And concerning ‘moment’ I’m yet to know if it is a second or a millisecond or a femtosecond or even smaller). By the time you call someone gay, their state of mind might have slipped into some other shade of sexuality or even one of the million subtle nuances of being gay itself. Language falls short and proves inadequate as it struggles to label and define everything. What is, is. You cannot be someone specific all the time. Like Walt Whitman, you must be containing multitudes. Names and definitions build identities. And names and definitions that are false – which is often the case – bestow false identities on you. And you get perfectly qualified to get hurt at the drop of a hat. When you believe you are an Indian (whatever that is) and someone despises India, you get hurt. When you identify yourself as a Muslim and someone lampoons your Prophet, you get hurt. And then you go around returning the hurt to others. Identities and labels cloud your vision. When you leave them behind, you emerge from your blindness. The quote could be politically incorrect too. The book has many such political incorrectnesses. Whe... M.I.A. - Paper Planes 2008
"Paper Planes" is a song by British hip hop artist M.I.A. It was released on 11 February 2008 as the third single from her second studio album, Kala (2007). It samples English rockband the Clash's 1982 song "Straight to Hell", leading to its members being credited as co-writers. A downtempo alternative hip hop, pop track combining African folk music elements, the song has a less dance-oriented sound compared to other songs on the album. Its lyrics, inspired by M.I.A.'s own problems obtaining a visa to work in the USA, satirise American perceptions of immigrants from war-torn countries, and said that the issue was probably "them thinking that I might to [sic] fly a plane into the Trade Center".
M.I.A. had wanted to work with American producer Timbaland for the album Kala, but her application for a long-term US work visa was rejected. This was allegedly due to her family's connection to the Tamil guerrillas, commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, a claim M.I.A. denied. Her visa problems were also attributed to her criticism of the Sri Lankan government's discrimination and alleged atrocities committed against the Tamils, with whom M.I.A. shares an ethnic and cultural heritage. She expressed this on her politicised debut album Arular. The unexpected success of "Paper Planes" paralleled M.I.A.'s condemnations of the Sri Lankan government's war crimes against the Tamils, generating accusations that she supported terrorism.
The song received widespread acclaim from contemporary critics, who complimented its musical direction and the subversive, unconventional subject matter. It won awards from the Canadian Independent Music Awards and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. The song has received praise in publications such as NME, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, each naming it among either the best songs of the 2000s decade or of all time. The review aggregator Acclaimed Music reports it as the second-most acclaimed song of the 21st century.
"Paper Planes" was used in the theatrical trailer for the 2008 stoner comedy Pineapple Express, directed by David Gordon Green, which catapulted the song to mainstream success in the US. "Paper Planes" and the DFA remix appear on the soundtrack to Danny Boyle's drama Slumdog Millionaire, released in 2008. The video game Far Cry 3 (2012) begins with "Paper Planes" used in the opening cinematic sequence.
"Paper Planes" received a total of 68,9% yes votes!

The name stuff is wild to me bc ppls names are whatever they say they are!!! I'm white and grew up in and around a black majority city and you just??? Say their name how they tell you to!! It's not hard!! The racism of someone telling a black person they're saying their own name wrong absolutely boggles my mind. Never heard it pronounced that way before? Great, now you have. Adjust your pronunciation and move on with your life.
Having had the multiracial multicultural background I do, plus having been a host family for a Japanese school since I could speak, plus having a whole bunch of South Korean and Sri Lankan friends in high school due to a different exchange program, plus having the fairly diverse friend group I have now... I'm not saying I pronounce everything perfectly. But every single one of my friends with a non-English name has had me tell them not to accept anything less than correct pronounciation, even if it takes me several tries.
Your name is your name. You're the authority on it.

The British Poem
Take some Picts, Celts and Silures And let them settle, Then overrun them with Roman conquerors. Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years Add lots of Norman French to some Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously. Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans, Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese, Vietnamese and Sudanese. Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians And Pakistanis, Combine with some Guyanese And turn up the heat. Sprinkle some fresh Indians, Malaysians, Bosnians, Iraqis and Bangladeshis together with some Afghans, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish, Japanese And Palestinians Then add to the melting pot. Leave the ingredients to simmer. As they mix and blend allow their languages to flourish Binding them together with English. Allow time to be cool. Add some unity, understanding, and respect for the future, Serve with justice And enjoy. Note: All the ingredients are equally important. Treating one ingredient better than another will leave a bitter unpleasant taste. Warning: An unequal spread of justice will damage the people and cause pain. Give justice and equality to all.
Benjamin Zephaniah

"What the hell are you making him do?" Accused Richard in English.
When the woman hesitates to respond, Richard shifts to another language Seigi doesn't understand. The man inside the house comes out after hearing what Richard said, and by the time Seigi came down from the ladder, the man was apologizing for something to him, but that made Richard even angrier. Seigi thinks that seeing someone as beautiful as Richard who looks to have stepped out from a movie screen so furious must feel so unreal, which is why the couple is now silent.
<His eyes blazed with blue fire, and I couldn't help but marvel at how their colour seemed to deepen when he was worked up as I set the roller and paint down>
Seigi sillyly thinks that Richard is speaking like a machine gun spitting enough bullets to take out ten people (Lol his analogies) , and after he makes a big "Hmph!" About 30 times grander than any Catherine made, he wraps an arm around Seigi's shoulders and pulls him away from them.
Richard "They think you are our servant, they apologized for borrowing our hired help while we were out. Preposterous, I'm not even going to ask what you were thinking, but I find the way you were treated inexcusable. And what was Catherine doing? Did she just obediently loan you out, like a toy?"
Seigi negates vehemently and explains that it was his whim and that Catherine didn't know anything, but Richard appeared to be only half-listening. He abandoned his bike and started walking, so Seigi took the bike and started pushing it along, he apologize for his incompetence, but Richard just said that he didn't need to apologize.
Seigi thinks that it wasn't strange for those people to think he was a servant because in that huge house were the three of them were staying, he was Asian and they were white, mother and son looked related with a glance, and the first time they saw him, he was driving and Catherine on the passenger seat, the two spoke native French, while his French was awkward and broken. So what would they think he was to them?
Still even thought he know the situation is like this, he can't help feeling uncomfortable and a bit sad 😞 (those people even refused and waited for Catherine to hand the food over to them rather than accepting it from Seigi's hand on the first night, honestly servant or not, that alone was so rude.)
Richard "You are a very considerate person. So much that it isn't simply a matter of you being raised in Japan. You really ought to learn that there are many people who seek to take advantage of people like you. I don't want to see you being used by vacation home flippers for their own gain."
Seigi is surprised, and Richard explains that it isn't unusual and that people often commission renovation to sell these vacation mansions for more, as those people were probably some intermediaries.
Seigi "Sorry, but I'm fine, really"
Richard "Don't apologize. This isn't your fault."
Seigi remains silent. <Then whose fault was it? Who needed to take the blame for this to be resolved?>
Richard finally realize that Seigi is pushing his bike. He takes the handlebars from him and begins pushing it himself.
<When Richard's spirits were down, he had this peculiar pitiful quality in him, almost like a dayflower in the rain. It packed a punch, I wasn't especially vulnerable to it or anything, but his pained face was completely outrageous. I could hardly stand it> (here is the unreliable narrator, he doesn't understand that it basically means he is weak to his sad face?)
Seigi wants to say something but doesn't know what, but Richard began explaining that the less you are close to big cities the more likely to encounter locals that perceive outsiders in different way.
Seigi "So they think that any foreigner is a migrant worker?"
Richard "You're not wrong. No matter the country, you'll find people who make broad generalisations about immigrants and struggle to see them as fellow humans. They said they thought you were Sri Lankan, but if I had said you were Indian or Mongolian, they would have believed me. That's roughly the level of awareness Europeans tend to have of Asian cultures"
Seigi "Unless they have friends in each of those countries, that is. It's my fault for not knowing that."
Richard ".....I thought that knowing that myself would be enough to protect you. But I was naive for thinking that. How can I possibly apologize to you?"
Seigi "Oh, don't apologize, you're just going to make me feel bad. Plus, I just helped paint a neighbour's house."
Richard "They didn't consider you the same class of human as them. It's intolerable"
Seigi thinks about the clause of etranger, that it basically meant to be considerate and to not allow harmful stereotypes to be perpetuated.
Seigi "Sorry"
Richard "Don't apologize"
Seigi "I'd appreciate it if you'd tell me what I should say then"
Richard "....."
Richard goes silent but then blurt out shiritori. Seigi got confused. What? Why now? Richard hurries him to play shiritori in Japanese. Seigi laughs, and they start with jewels' names. Seigi feels that just talking in Japanese makes him feel like his worries were going away. That was probably why Richard even suggested the game.
Richard is too strong. They continue with food names
Seigi "R-red bean mochi"
Richard "Ice cream parfait"
Seigi "The kind with banana, right? T-t-tiramisú éclair"
Richard "Your pronunciation got a little french-sounding at the end. Rice pudding"
Seigi "...G...what start with G?
Richard "You should disperse with the food restriction. You sound like a machine that's run out of oil"
Seigi "Gratin! Oh, lemme take that back..."
Richard "Not a chance"
Richard laugh and said, "Tough luck," to announce his loss.
<I felt relieved. I already really, really, really, really liked his face as it was, but I think I liked this particular expression of his most of all>
(man is down bad 😆, now I wonder if in the original text that like was with the kanji of "love"or if he simply said "Suki")
Seigi looks frustrated because he lost and Richard snicker.
"Another feather for my cap, I beat a japanese person at Shiritori"
Seigi "You're basically unbeatable. You could conquer the whole of Japan with ease"
Richard "I will humbly refrain. I'm sure it would do wonders for expanding my vocabulary, but it sounds dreadfully exhausting."
Richard chuckles but then begins to tell a story about how when he was little, he brought a group of classmates to that villa, Catherine was delighted to have the opportunity of entertaining his friends for the first time. But at the end of the 2 week vacation, Richard's friends were not his friends anymore but became Catherine's groupies. Richard explain that they were totally different animals when they were at the mansion and when they were outside. From the moment they woke up, they tried to curry favour with her, in the afternoon, fight over who would walk with her, in the evening, compete over the order in which they got to dance with her.
Richard "This may sound a bit harsh, but whoever she is dealing with, she cannot feel secure until she's exerted her influence over everyone near her. As her son, I am outside her charms range, but with anyone else she'll try to dye them in her colours completely"
Richard said that after the end of the vacation, he announced to her that he'll never bring friends over to her, Catherine was a bit hurt but understood and said that maybe it was for the better. Richard kept his word and didn't even make her meet the woman he was going to marry.
(Apparently, she even went to a psychologist, but then the man ended up getting enamoured, so she stopped going in the end)

I'm someone who wants to make Australian characters for both Overwatch and a couple other series. What non-English languages (aboriginal or otherwise) are common in Australia? Or at least the area that you're from?
In all honesty you can't really go wrong? Australia is very much a country that is basically a soup of different cultures, especially in city areas. So I can only really talk from my experience.
First things first, if you write a character speaking aboriginal you will likely have to specify which people they are a part of since each mob has their own dialect.
Then when it comes to languages that don't originate in Australia I mostly see Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese and Mandarin. However statistics wise, after English the most common languages spoken are; Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Punjabi, Greek, Italian, Hindi and Spanish.
I also do want to point out that you don't have to make a character white or aboriginal to make them Australian. Hell just look at how people started HC Lucio as being Australian after Frogger became popular, from what I've seen they don't change from being Brazilian, just add a bit of Australian flavour in. Hell I HC JQ as Australian-Sri Lankan like her voice actress cause to me that makes sense.

Sorry if this is weird to ask but how many of your ocs are POC? Do you write for readers of color?

just a little vent
I saw someone say you cant be South Asian and declare yourself British, as its a traitor. (They werent joking which seemed like they were)
Im south asian but born in the UK i do call myself British like most people I know do or they call themselves either Asian, or English. They choose whatever they identify themselevs with.
I understand what the trauma the British did when they left my great grandparents birth home.
(We dont learn much about the British Empire in secondary education)
Anyone else from scotland, wales and Ireland were taught different from what we were taught in school.
I always wondered what other countries were taught about the British?
((Hate it here))
Two things here.
My close friend is a history teacher in London (she is Sri Lankan) and we got to talking about how the kids there barely learn about the British empire and the colonization. Like we (in each country) learn so much about what happened to our countries when we won the British role and how it changed us for better or worse (mostly worse). it’s blowing that the kids in the UK don’t learn this. But not surprising.
The other thing is a lot of people confuse nationality with race. Your nationality is British. Your race (or ethnicity in some cultures) is South Asian (or specially Indian, Sri Lankan etc). You can be both. You can choose the one you identify with. There is nothing wrong with it. People who tell other people who they should identify are fucking weird 🙃

Writeblr Intro
*Edited I am still bad at introductions haha
Hello! Ayubowan! Konnichiwa!
So, who am I? What does it mean to live? What does 'I' mean? Calm down… Wrong community, ah idk…
The name's Riveen, just Riveen. That is my real name.
Pronouns are he/him and a teen.
MBTI says I am INFJ but it said I was ENFJ too, I am a customisable personality, haha. (Buy one get one free)
Bookie and nerd.
STEM student (the Astrophysics kind), but also into literature and other stuff of the mortals.
Content in my site or here (as in Tumblr)
Side-blog for WIP world @scalmropia
I am crazy and WILL NOT limit my blog for writing. I will post random stuff or repost irrelevant stuff. And I stole post templates from people so credit to them!
I am also open for asks and tags.
If I am not boring enough yet, you can read more below the cut.
I am Sri Lankan and speak Sinhala so I might and will rant 'how good it is'. Like for example, it has 60 letters (18 vowels, 2 sounds, 40 consonants). මේ භාෂාව ඉගෙනගන්න, එතකොට හොඳයි!!!
Also, I am weird. So, if you need to talk about the end of the universe, quantum model, how rubies and sapphires are related, why 'conversation' had a weirder meaning in old English, or what the Montevideo convention is, I am your guy.
Also hit me up if you find a random body or gets possessed by a ghost. But beware of me, I like to day dream a lot.
So, my work…?
I tend to write some dark stuff, mostly horror. But I also write some 'nice' stuff too. Prose and poetry. Much of works are here, but I would also update a list at the end of this.
My current WIPs include The Star Child, a story about a father and his adopted daughter; an unnamed political rom com set in Sri Lanka and a Sherlock Holmes fan fiction.
I love myself a big fictional world and I have some ideas, will update when that becomes a thing
Hopefully I will get published.
What have I put out?

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR TAKES ON THE DUBOIS FAMILY!!! :D
YAY!!!!!!
theres four brothers, Guilliaume (14), Timothée (11), Fernand (6) and Francois (0). this is just the order of ages when Francois was born though
Saanvika died when Francois was 6 (Guilliaume 20, Timothée 17, Fernand 12), one year after Angelique left. Guilliaume had already left by then, but he came back for the funeral.
same as with you, Guilliaume is gay, but Lance had a different response. still homophobic, but more... vaguely. Guilliaume came out just before he left (when Francois was 4), and Saanvika was 100% accepting, which toned down Lance's response to awkwardness. basically completely ignoring that his son was gay. he came to Saanvika's funeral with his boyfriend, and Lance referred to him as Guilliaume's friend for... a while (not helpful for Francois at all)
Saanvika was the glue, and Timothée was the most like her. Guilliaume was far more argumentative, but Timothée was the peacekeeper of the brothers. all of Francois's brothers loved him and took care of him because they knew Lance wouldn't, especially after Saanvika died. Timothée was very gentle with Francois and tried to teach him what Saanvika taught him (to be kind and caring, along with Sri Lankan and French recipes)
Saanvika was autistic, which is where Francois got it from. if I write anything with them they'll probably all be autistic except for Lance, so there's that.
Lance planned to throw out her clothes, but Timothée begged him not to because they were very close and he wanted to keep them. he left them with Fernand, and then Fernand left them with Francois. since Francois didn't know her very well he looked at a lot of photos of her and Timothée would always tell him stories about her. after Guilliaume left, Timothée took care of Fernand and Francois.
they're all multilingual (the brothers and Saanvika speak Sinhala, English and French and Lance speaks English and French, also Guilliaume speaks Spanish)
Timothée and Guilliaume used to argue a lot but they stopped after Fernand was born, they still did sometimes but far less to avoid upsetting their baby brother and Saanvika. Lance was trying to be involved in their life the best he could, but wasn't good at it after Angelique started nursing them and then Timothée and Fernand were basically Francois's parents after the death of Saanvika, but he wants the best for his family
anyway. yeah.
