“Cazador took everything. He’s dead, and he still has everything. I can’t see my reflection, can’t stand in the sun, I don’t even remember what it’s like to draw a real breath. All my respiration is a force of habit. Half of my personality is from simply trying to survive. You’ll never hear my heartbeat or see the color of these eyes before they turned red. Before I grew fangs.” His nose wrinkles in disgust. “There is nothing to be lost because he took all of it. You’ll never know the man I was before-” She groans. “Please don’t try to convince me you were ever a man of virtue.”

“Hello, lover.”

Astarion’s grin widens as Celeste pins him to the ground. Water trickles from his damp hair while his rain-soaked trousers chill through her inner thighs as they bracket him in place, her nightgown bunched around her hips. A puddle forms by the open balcony doors as it thunders outside and the curtains, drenched by the storm, ripple in the wind.

“Celeste, darling, drop the stake.” Astarion says precariously, his smile fading, but she remains frozen in disbelief as she stares at him.

Gale, now awake and disoriented, gapes at the scene before him, his eyes wide as if Astarion were a ghost. Shadowheart sits on her knees, her body tense as she contemplates how to best react.

Astarion’s free hand reaches out, his fingers grazing Celeste’s cheek before sliding his thumb around her wrist to the center of her palm, applying light pressure. Slowly, she eases her hold, and the stake clatters to the floor, rolling under the bed. He gives her a slow nod and releases her.

Shaking, Celeste falls to the side, slumping against the bedframe, her gaze fixed ahead, numbness enveloping her. Astarion props himself up on one arm, wincing from the pain of the impact, as he rises to his knees in front of her.

“Are you alright?” His voice is filled with concern, but he refrains from touching her. Her eyes slide to meet his, rage and relief simmering within. When she doesn’t respond, Astarion stands and brushes himself off, looking between the three of them.

“Well, this is an interesting development.” 

“I assure you,” Gale says as he steps over a puddle and shuts the balcony doors against the howling wind and rain. “There have been no developments.”

“Aside from Astarion poisoning Celeste, stealing from us, and then disappearing, you mean?” Shadowheart leers.

Astarion’s scowl deepens. “I don’t recall asking for your opinion.”

“Why are you here?” Celeste interjects, her voice detached as she gives him a cold, piercing look that makes him wish he’d never come at all. Astarion’s gaze falls to the floor.

“Celeste, I…” He begins with a sigh, crouching before her once again, “I had a plan. To get the Tear safely to Aylin and Isobel, to distract Keresta from you until I could kill her. I never…” his voice falters, “I never anticipated how much I would hurt you. The ways I’d break your trust, what it would do to you…and when I realized what I’d done, I told myself it would be worth it as long as it kept you safe…And now it seems I’ve failed even in that.” He reaches for her hand, but she pulls it back.

“So, why are you here?”

Astarion closes his eyes for a long moment, rain still drips from his soaked curls, cascading down the bridge of his nose. “The Sharrans have…so much power at their disposal. Their cleric incinerated Artor Morlin in shadows right in front of me. Keresta said…” He swallows hard, his throat tight. “She told me she’d do the same to our friends, to you, if I crossed her.”

“So you chose to leave,” Shadowheart interjects, raising an eyebrow in disbelief, “and thought she’d be perfectly okay with that outcome?”

“I had no other choice,” Astarion reaches out and grasps a disoriented Celeste’s arm, “Which is why we need to get out of Waterdeep.” He urges, pulling her to her feet.

“Because that worked out so well the last time,” Shadowheart grumbles. 

Celeste shakes her head. “No. No more running.” 

“Did you hear a word I just said?” Astarion asks incredulously. 

“Give her a moment. This is a lot to take in.” Gale interjects. 

Astarion’s frustration grows. “Fine, I’ll make it simple then. We need to leave now.” He tugs Celeste after him towards the door, but she digs her bare heels into the floorboards, ripping her arm away from him.

In an instant, Astarion catches her wrist, barely an inch from his cheek, just as she attempts to slap him. His eyes grow dark as his fingers curl around it roughly. He slowly backs her into the wall, careful to keep their bodies from touching.

“Let’s not start with that again.” He says through his teeth, “It’s been a very, very long night.”

Suddenly, a pair of rough hands forcefully pull him away from Celeste, throwing him against the doorframe. Gale clutches Astarion’s collar tightly, holding him in place.

“You’re not taking her anywhere against her will,” He snarls, his voice seething with fury. “I said, give her a moment.” A look of surprise washes over Astarion’s face as he recoils from the wizard’s grip.

“Both of you, stop!” Shadowheart swiftly intervenes, pulling Gale off Astarion. He stumbles back, still fuming. The cleric takes a cloak from a nearby chaise and drapes it around Celeste’s shoulders, shooting a disdainful glance at both men.

“Apologies,” Astarion mumbles, clearing his throat with a guilty look, “As I mentioned, a very... long night.” His weariness is clear as he drags a hand across his face. Now, in the light, Celeste notices the hollows beneath his eyes, evidence of how little he’s fed, despite the crimson staining his lips, dried blood on his chin and neck. 

Gale sighs. “Sorry. Blame it on the sudden awakening.” He casts a glance at Celeste, who is silently seething against the wall, then back at Astarion. “Your bed upstairs is still there for you. Perhaps we should all rest and discuss this tomorrow.” 

“We don’t have that kind of time.”

“We have plenty of time. The wards around the tower will hold just fine for now.”

“They didn’t keep me out.” 

“They weren’t meant to. As long as you have good intentions, you are always welcome here, Astarion.” Gale says softly.

Astarion's throat tightens and he nods, somewhat with disbelief, as he reaches towards the door handle, looking at Celeste before he leaves. Her expression has softened some, but remains distant. 

“Thank you,” Astarion says to Gale in a low voice, before slipping into the hall and upstairs to the attic.

Astarion feels her presence lingering in the doorway before he sees her. 

“Care to talk now?” He asks from the bed as he stares at the ceiling. The cobwebs cast intricate patterns of vein-like shadows against the wooden beams, dancing and shifting with each gentle flicker of light from the candle on his desk.

“That depends.” Celeste says. She crosses the threshold of the room, remaining near the wall, her vexation evident. “Will you respect my decisions?”

Astarion rolls his head towards her, releasing an exasperated sigh. “I will. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.” 

“Even better.”

With a haughty glare, he sits up and swings his legs off the bed. “Are you here to gloat or did you want something? Perhaps you’ve brought another stake to drive through my heart.”

“You did say you’d prefer to be staked…”

“I know what I said! ” Astarion snaps. He runs a hand through his hair before burying his face in his hands. After a moment, he braces his palms on his knees, and leans forward.

“Can I do anything to fix this?” He asks in a softer tone. 

Celeste lets out a long sigh through her nose. “I don’t know.” Biting her lip, she glances toward the hall. Astarion pushes himself to his feet with a soft grunt. 

“That’s a start, I suppose.” He says with a smirk and crosses the room. Celeste’s eyes follow his every movement as he rests his forearm on the wall, leaning against it, his body inching closer to hers.

She notices his dry hair and fresh clothes, remarking, “You’ve cleaned up. Whose blood was that from before?”

“A… friend’s,” He answers, his voice carrying a hint of uncertainty. “She helped me escape. We had to stage an attack to make it believable. No harm was caused.” As he observes a flicker of concern flash across Celeste’s face, he quickly adds, “…and no lines were crossed. A newfound ally. Nothing more."

Celeste nods, her eyes flickering with a sense of relief that is impossible to miss. 

Astarion’s gaze drifts over her, taking in the subtle changes since he last saw her. She’s more toned, presumably from training, and to his surprise, her flushed cheeks and bare shoulders are sun-kissed. Sensing his thoughts, she mutters.

“Wyll has me practicing in the daylight.” 

Astarion can’t help but emit a quiet snort of amusement. “What a waste.” Without thinking, he brushes the back of his fingers down the length of her arm, feeling the warmth radiating from her skin. Celeste watches his movements, flushing in response, but doesn’t recoil.

“How so?” 

“Surely there are other undiscovered powers of yours hiding in the moonlight.” His fingers lift away, curling towards his hand, lingering, as if unsure what to do next. The absence of his touch leaves her skin in a state of constant ache.

“I’ve had some…limited success while you’ve been away.” She confesses.

Astarion raises an eyebrow, tilting his head back slightly and gesturing to the center of the room before crossing his arms. “Well, don't hold back. Show me.” 

“It’s not a party trick.”

“Of course.” He says with an impish grin. 

“Fine. But remember that I said limited success.” She extends her hand before her, furrowing her brow as she recalls Gale’s lesson. As she concentrates, a couple of sparks of light materialize in the air, their transient glow fading almost as quickly as they appeared.

“Well. I’m sure that will have Keresta quaking in her boots.” Astarion jests, his tone laced with sarcasm. “It’s never too late to leave…”

Celeste scowls, her focus intensifying as she attempts to evoke the emotions from before: the anguish, the grief, her family, the connections she had forged over the past several months…

Nothing.

Her gaze shifts to where he watches, his devastating features just barely illuminated in the candlelight. She tries to hold on to her contempt, her anger towards him, but it fades away, replaced by a familiar longing. Her desire to touch him, to be held by him, for all of this pain to…

Astarion raises an eyebrow, questioning her intent as she continues to stare at him. Her stomach flutters in response, and the sparks in the air begin to reform. Yet he remains oblivious, tilting his head to the side, his brow furrowing in curiosity.

“What is it?”

As he speaks, the shimmers intensify, their ethereal glow captivating his attention. A swirling blizzard of blue and silver light encircles them, whispering against their skin, tousling Astarion’s disheveled curls like a winter breeze. The halos of Celeste’s irises seem to flicker as the starlight surrounds them, and Astarion squints, contemplating, before he pins her to the wall, his body melding against hers with a delicate touch.

“What are you doing?” she breathes.

“Testing a theory,” he purrs.

Closing the distance between them, his lips hover just above hers. He drags his fingers across the rough texture of the exposed brick where he had been leaning as he presses himself closer, stifling a moan as her body responds to his. 

The power coursing through Celeste’s veins flares, and suddenly, a night sky bursts above them, dissolving the ceiling into a phantasm of stars. Astarion steals a quick glance upward, one hand still braced against the wall above her, while the other glides down to rest at her waist.

“You’re full of surprises, aren’t you?” he murmurs into her ear.

Celeste’s breath hitches, and the illusion dissolves. The wooden beams of the attic return as the night sky dissipates, stars falling like snowflakes to the floor and vanishing into nothingness.

Astarion returns his attention to her, cocking his head to the side and frowning as he senses her apprehension. He takes a step back, his face grim, eyelids lowered.

“I’ve lost you, haven’t I?” He asks in a low voice.

She shakes her head. “No,” she whispers, “it’s not that.”

“What do you want, Celeste? Tell me what I can do to fix this.”

“I don’t know….”

“Well, when you finally figure it out, I’m certain they’ll throw a damned ball in your honor.”

“You don’t get to be angry-”

“I get to be whatever the hells I want!” He hisses. 

“If you’d taken one moment to ask me what I’d wanted before, it would have been for you to stay. I would have crawled out of a thousand graves if it spared you from subjecting yourself to servitude again, to Keresta, I thought I’d lost you-”

“There’s no one to lose, Celeste. Cazador took everything. He’s dead, and he still has everything. I can’t see my reflection, can’t stand in the sun, I don’t even remember what it’s like to draw a real breath. All my respiration is a force of habit. Half of my personality is from simply trying to survive. You’ll never hear my heartbeat or see the color of these eyes before they turned red. Before I grew fangs.” His nose wrinkles in disgust. “There is nothing to be lost because he took all of it. You’ll never know the man I was before-”

She groans. “Please don’t try to convince me you were ever a man of virtue.” 

Astarion’s eyes narrow, his lip curling. “Oh, fuck off, I’m serious-”

“And so am I. I love the man you are now, Astarion.” She continues earnestly. “You are not tainted by what he made you do, what was done to you.” She takes a step closer, reaching for his hand, “But he’s finally dead. So leave him to rot,” she pleads, her voice filled with anguish. “and live."

He stares at her, his jaw clenching as he holds her gaze, his expression unreadable.

“Just-” 

“Stop talking.” He growls, and his mouth captures hers in a fierce kiss before she can finish her sentence.

[SEMI-FINALS] Slaughterhouse vs Elegant Chaos

Slaughterhouse: MTMTE unburies its gays. The arc where the accident at the start of the series is revealed to have caused a duplicate Lost Light to spawn, and it turns out things went badly enough on that one it almost makes our Lost Light look like things are going smoothly by comparison. Elegant Chaos: the time travel one. The one where Brainstorm invents time travel because he had a crush on a boy, and then nearly eradicates the entire Cybertronian timeline because Chromedome is bad at coping with loss. We see the first glimpses of the Functionist Universe, and Rewind shoots a baby. And the whole thing turns out to be a closed time loop in the end anyway, going right back to Chaos Theory. Author's Note: I wrote this a few years ago, never intending to really show this to anyone, but then I saw this Joel Miller Fanfic and the request that it spawned from, and I couldn't help but think maybe I could share this story on tumblr.

This is an original character story, created long before I became a part of the Pedro character fandom, but the main lead does have Latino/Hispanic heritage by coincidence.

The idea for this formed from wanting an mpreg story that wasn't treated like a joke or too over the top. I wanted to write something someone who isn't really into mpreg might enjoy anyway, because that's not all this is about. It's about friendship and family (and some cruel mad scientists).

I'm a very sentimental person. What drew me to mpreg was seeing a softer side to a male character (specifically one born male) - that's all. Plus it makes for some humorous freaking out because bio males aren't supposed to fill this role, blah, blah, blah. I really enjoy making the boys weirded out by the flipped role situation (hopefully their reactions feel realistic - this is why this is an original character fic instead of a fanfic).

Cade And Kamilah aren't really based on any characters, but Noah has a little hint of Dean Winchester (SPN) in him. Cool guy, even cooler leather jacket. ;)

DEVIN ASHTON - Gossip and the Rain

Amid a critically acclaimed film, a successful role in a Wideway musical and now a Simflix series dedicated to all his feuds and problematic behavior in the entertainment industry, we look back on the former One Reflection member's debut solo album as its released on vinyl for the first time.

Devin Ashton and his record label Maxis Music Machine have announced that they will be releasing Ashton's first two albums on vinyl, including his solo debut album Gossip and the Rain.

Gossip and the Rain is the solo debut album by Simerican entertainer Devin Ashton. Released via Maxis Music Machine, it was released after he departed from the pop group One Reflection and, therefore, makes him the first former member of the group to release a solo album.

A pop record with alternative and indie pop influences, Ashton wrote all the original songs on the album while its production was handled by acclaimed award-winning producers Buster Round, Ebenezer Clavier, Bart Hammer, Aria Trill and Suzy Strummer. The album features one covered song, "Spinning The Wheel".

Despite low expectations from critics of the album's quality considering Ashton's reputation at the time, the album received mixed to positive reviews, receiving zero negative reviews from professional critics. Critics praised the album's production and considered it the album's "saving grace"; Ashton's writing and vocal performance received mixed responses, with some noting that pitch correction was heavily used on Ashton's vocals.

The album debuted at number twenty-five on the Simboard 200 and ultimately peaked at number twelve. It has since been certified Platinum by the Plumbob Recording Assocation Academy (PRAA).

The album spawned four singles: "Help Me Run Away", "Spinning the Wheel", "Somebody Else" and "Physical", which were all released in quick succession from each other. The album's first three singles reached the top forty on the Simboard Heat 100 while its final single, "Physical", reached the top twenty.

SINGLES FROM THE ALBUM

"Help Me Run Away"; [Simboard Heat 100 peak: #30]. Devin's solo debut single.

"Somebody Else"; [Simboard Heat 100 peak: #34]. Another artist quickly covered and released their version as single, with it charting higher that Devin's original version.

"Spinning The Wheel"; [Simboard Heat 100 peak: #21; certified Gold]. Originally done by a legendary singer and released earlier in his career, long before Devin even began singing professionally, Devin covered the song for fun but was surprised the label chose it to be released as a single. Though the legendary singer appreciated Devin's version, he asked the label (that they were both signed to) to pull it from radio which they obliged, ultimately halting promotion for Devin's version. The legendary singer then re-released his original version, where it reached the top ten on the Simboard Heat 100. Of all the singles on the album, Devin did not film a video for this single. Many speculated that it would've reached the top twenty had it continued to be promoted by the label.

Devin was roasted for the album's surprisingly (and relatively) low first week sales as many expected better from a former member of the most popular boy band in the world, One Reflection - even if he was the least popular member of said group! Despite the album not receiving any nominations during the awards seasons, Ashton quickly released his sophomore album which received a better critical response and got him his first nominations and his first top ten hits as well!

The album's release on vinyl comes after an extremely busy time for the multi-hypenated entertainer. Not only did he receive acclaim for his acting performances in the film Good Broadcasting Service this past Summer and in the Wideway musical hit Security this past Spring, he is now the main subject of scandalous new Simflix docuseries titled Everyone Hates Devin, which details his past and current feuds and his supposed problematic antics in the entertainment industry. The show has received positive reviews so far though Devin has yet to comment on it.

Courtesy of Maxis Music Machine, the album is now available on vinyl in two colors: black and cobalt blue! Also available on CD, cassette, digital download and streaming.

The Venture Bros. #34: “Dr. Quymn, Medicine Woman” | July 6, 2008 - 11:30PM | S03E06

This one’s called “not a favorite” by Jackson Publick (also the credited writer), which gives me the freedom to agree with him. I’m not sure it’s the worst episode of the show, but it could be my least favorite episode of my least favorite season, which puts it pretty far down the list. It’s also one of the few episodes of the show that might be considered completely inessential, though the revelation of Jonas Venture as a key-party swinger is fairly important to the series as a whole. It’s also information a viewer could learn from elsewhere in the show. 

This one was meant to be an old-fashioned mostly-standalone “doc and the boys go on an actual adventure” episode. The show was becoming more serialized and soap opera-y, so Jackson Publick took it upon himself to try and re-infuse the show with it’s season one roots. So Dr. Venture goes into the jungle to try and Scrooge McDuck a fertility idol from some ornery natives. Rusty is rescued by Dr. Quymn, a little girlfriend he had during childhood. They haven’t seen each other since they were ten, so no, they aren’t Hank and Dean’s mother. I don’t think the show ever confirmed or denied this, but she seems like she could be Jonas Venture Sr.’s secret spawn, making her Rusty’s sister. Nasty.

She probably isn’t, and I should have waited till the end of the write-up before putting that in your head. Anyway, while the two old friends catch up we learn that she has two twin teenage daughters, who are basically female versions of Hank and Dean. They are conventionally attractive, but the show doesn’t really creep on them as bad as it could have. In the commentary track, Jackson describes them as annoying, like season one Hank and Dean. The awkward sexual encounter they have with Dean towards the end is a little squirmy, but not a ten-out-of-ten on the grossometer. 

She also has a female Brock. She’s pretty butch, and she definitely prefers women, but briefly flirts with Brock and they meet to have sex at one point. The show basically builds towards everyone trying to bone each other. Dean is the only innocent among them, and his scene is basically an attempted rape by the girls. Doc Hammer charmingly takes umbrage with this in the commentary track. Between him and Publick, he’s much more protective of Dean’s delicate nature. If John K. were sitting in on that commentary track he’d probably call Dean a “retarded fag” and openly perv on the under-aged Jezebels.

There’s a plot about a Wereodile, which is like a werewolf but a crocodile. He’s beaten up by Clyde, an orangutan the Ventures are training to box. That whole element is a parody of Every Which Way But Loose, which is a masterpiece. Nobody fucks, but Hank does get ritualistically circumcised by the indigenous people of the jungle. This hearkens back to a line in season one, “Hank quit bragging about your circumcision.” Since Hank is a clone of that Hank, it can be surmised that 1) this copy of Hank wasn’t circumcised unlike that season one Hank, and 2) Hank is routinely singled out as the alpha male between the two Venture Bros, and often selected for scarring rites of passages. 

The Bros. relationship changes over the series, and this episode does deal with their split in personalities and interests head-on. Dean is only interested in adventuring and feels jilted by Hank who just wants to have a sexual antic with the girls. This dynamic is developed over the course of the series, and season three sorta takes the first significant steps towards the place where they end up during the finale. No spoilers!

I’ll note a few other random things, because deep down I just want to be a listicle writer: the episode’s one big laugh from me is when Doc is disgusted to learn that Dr. Quymn is epileptic. The animation for Hank’s bass guitar noodling was actually animated first, and then Doc recorded the exact notes Hank is shown playing, because he wanted it to be accurate. There are a flurry of references in the 60s flashback, but apparently this is the first appearance of Blue Morpho, who figures into the last couple of seasons pretty heavily. How about that! I don’t think it was as much a seed they were planting; Jackson and Doc just had a penchant for designing nameless background characters and then, when it came time to introduce a new guy, just pulling from what already existed in their character design files.

Since The Mole is back now, I wanna share my backstory with the series because this is genuinely bonkers. It was, and I am not kidding, through Mario fan fiction. There was this person on fanfiction.net who basically made a fictitious rendition of The Mole where random Mario characters would compete in the show, and the host was this motherfucker from Mario Party 8

And I am not joking those stories were like The Hot Shit for me for so many years, and it was such a hit with a subsection of people that it spawned a sub-genre of fan fictions where people would put other Mario or even just Nintendo characters into their own Mole game shows. It was absolutely bonkers to witness. I had plans to write one, and I genuinely plotted out ideas for challenges for it, but it never really came through unfortunately.

Having been exposed to the show through the fics first, I was unfortunately spoiled on the identities of the Moles of the actual series' Moles for seasons 1, 2 and 5, which meant I never got to truly experience the actual show without prior knowledge. (Until now anyway!!)

UPDATE: I just found out this guy is STILL AT IT all these years later, currently on his 4th "Series" involving characters from Smash Bros. Gotta respect the dedication to the craft!

Finally caught up to Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and god it is so good, I love how distinct all the characters are in design and in personality, the plot is very goofy but also super poignant at times, I like that it's a pretty different take on the series... and the animation OH MY GOD THE ANIMATION ON THESE FIGHT SCENES IS SUCCULENT AND SO WELL CHOREOGRAPHED

And holy shit the movie was so good too, I love the Future Trunks Casey Jones I love the minecraft Krang I love Leo's entire character arc I love Raph being tough on his brother because he cares about his safety I love how gorgeous it all looks

Also Donnie is a relatable icon we LOVE autistic rep

If we don't get a S3 I am personally throwing Nickelodeon into the prison dimension

ao3 user elfin im sorry to put you on blast like this but you have written 38 individual works for scottish crime drama shetland, specifically for the pairing Duncan Hunter/Jimmy Perez. two of those fics are from all the way back in april of 2014, around 32 thousand words between them. they are the first two fics ever posted to the shetland tag on ao3. okay. five years later, in march 2019, you write a third shetland fic, a modest 1,514 words. eighteen months after that, you write a fourth, in november of 2021. this one is even shorter, merely 865 words. okay. then, in january of 2024, you have a fucking near death experience or something, because from that point on, you post exclusively shetland fanfiction.

to contextualize this statement for those of you following along at home, ao3 user elfin is no one-trick pony. they have 230 individual works of fanfiction credited to them on ao3, some of which actually predate ao3 and were moved to it later, most averaging at around 10 to 15 thousand words. to give an ridiculously conservative estimate, I would place that at around 3 million words of fanfiction for ao3. they have written for 23 fandoms that I could identify on the site, but state in their bio that they have written for over 40, and I believe them. this person has surpassed 'seasoned' and moved firmly into 'venerable'.

anyway. the remaining 34 of the 38 shetland fics you, ao3 user elfin, have written over your twelve-year-long tenure as an ao3 scholar, have been written in the past six months. and sure, you've been off-and-on in over the course of a decade, but if we run the averages, before this january you were coming in at about 16 fics per year. shetland fanfiction now makes up over 15 percent of your total fanfiction footprint on ao3. and the intervals! Some of these fics are posted within 24 hours of each other! I obviously can't speak to your writing schedule, but you've been turning around 5,000 words of steamy middle-aged detective smut in a day pretty much on the regular!

and, like, shetland is a small fandom, okay? there are 282 works posted in the tag. I've watched about five-point-three seasons of it with my mom, and there is nothing about it that i would term remarkable in any way, except perhaps that it's set in shetland. there's cool accents and fun slang and that's it. I mean, I could theorize about your earlier forays into 2010 bbc series sherlock spawning a repressed lust for slightly frumpy british detectives with upturned noses, but other than that? I genuinely do not know what could make a person write 32 thousand words of fanfiction for an above average murder mystery show in 2014 and seemingly forget about it for ten years, only to wake up on january 9th of 2024 and post nothing else but shetland fanfiction from that day on. did you hit your head? did you get a terminal diagnosis and decide you want to spend the last months of your life writing about jimmy perez and his perpetually struggling husband-in-law? is someone forcing you to write this? is it some kind of penance?
