So in this world of rising streaming costs and license holders unilaterally deciding to pull content from streaming channels I figured I'd compile a few guides for people who want to cut those cords. As a rhetorical exorcise I'm going to list out some guides on how someone might want to create their own local media streaming service and how to automate management and supply of content to it. ALL RHETORICAL
I'm not going to explain how to build a media server, people who go that extensive won't need these guides, but if you have the cash, and don't want to build your own server you can always buy a higher end NAS from synology or QNAP that runs docker engine and you should be good.
Please make sure to follow the instructions for each individual guide in order depending on your choices. RHETORICALLY.
First you install Docker:
https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2023/02/docker-compose-synology-nas-install-and-configuration/
Then you install your download clients:
Newsgroups (you'll also need an account with a hosting service like Newshosting or Giganews as well as access to an indexer): https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2021/07/30/setting-up-nzbget-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Torrents (with this you'll need access to either public or private trackers): https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2021/09/13/deluge-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Then you install Jackett (this'll auto-manage all of your torrent trackers and create feeds for Sonarr and Radarr):
https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/install-jackett-using-docker/
Then you install Sonarr:
https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2021/05/03/setting-up-sonarr-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Then you install Radarr:
https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2021/07/30/setting-up-radarr-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Then you install Plex or Jellyfin:
Plex: https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2021/12/06/plex-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Jellyfin: https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2022/09/03/jellyfin-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas-no-hardware-transcoding/
Then you install Overseerr or Jellyseerr:
Overseerr: https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2022/03/19/overseerr-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/
Jellyseerr (only use if you picked Jellyfin): https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/2022/09/04/jellyseerr-in-docker-on-a-synology-nas/

got a new hard drive (had to, no space left 😔), so I'm using that as a reason to completely reorganise my files (mostly shows, movies etc)
I'm having such a good time 💖
#not sarcasm! it's so fun#the only thing that sucks is that I managed to break sonarr somehow. didn't touch a thing but okay sure#I'll figure it out#I've got to wait for a couple cables that we had to order anyway before I can start moving stuff around#I've been sooo frustrated with how chaotic everything has been so this is gonna be great#but yeah I've had to delete so much stuff already (not at all because I've been downloading too much John Larroquette stuff or anything...#😬😬)#and I've been complaining about it every day so my husband bought me a new hard drive 🙈#still not enough space but it'll do for now#I always think 'oh I'm not a data hoarder! I don't have nearly as much stuff as those guys on reddit or wherever!' but like. it's not#because I don't WANT to save all of it#I only have *checks* 16 TB now with the new hard drive. I'd absolutely get a bunch of 20 TB ones if I could but no instead I spend money on#dumb shit lol#anyway yay I can stop deleting movies! very exciting#lol if anything I'm a hard drive hoarder.... I've got 7 internal ones and 3 external ones now.#yeah I just add new ones and don't remove any#I don't even wanna say it because I'll jinx it but. I've never had a hard drive fail. in over 20 years of having computers. I'm scared it's#gonna happen but 🤷 so far it hasn't lol#well one external one started failing but it went gradually not all at once. so I was able to move everything off of it first#and I mean I have backups of everything that's important! but not any of the media stuff 😬 it wouldn't be awful but it'd definitely make me#sad because I'm sure there's things there's that I couldn't find anymore#personal

Discovering the sonarr/radarr/jellyfin combo for media downloading has cleansed my skin, watered my crops, healed my ailments, etc etc etc... like the setup is a proper fucking nightmare but now that everything is chugging along smoothly I'm obsessed. I created my own personal streaming service and it's fucking amazing

Monogatari's a great series but dear god if you value your sanity do not try to import it into Plex/Jellyfin/sonarr. I have been bashing my skull into it for the past 4 days.

Please, I would love it if you would write up a post about how to torrent media! I'd love to do it but I've found every explanation so damn confusing I have no idea where to begin.
Well... I haven't actually torrented anything in a few years. My Usenet setup is quite a bit different.
But what I do know about torrenting boils down to this:
Torrenting works by a bunch of people providing pieces of a file/set of files that your torrent client puts together. You then also re-provide pieces of the file/set of files to others. That's what "seeding" is, and for a healthy community you generally want each user to have a 2:1 seed ratio (i.e., you provide twice as much as you take).
Buuuuuut seeding is what can get you in trouble legally, as providing media is way different from downloading it. As I said up top, I haven't torrented in a long time so I'm not 100% sure on how much companies are going after individual people nowadays.
You kick this off by loading a torrent file into your client program. This helps everyone's various clients work together to get and provide the desired media. Because torrent files themselves are not media, they are legal to host online. Sort of. Technically.
My basic tips for torrenting are:
Use a VPN. This obscures your traffic from your ISP (and everyone else). Yes, you have to pay for one, don't use a free one. And know that you're basically trading your ISP seeing your traffic for the VPN seeing your traffic.
Be very careful which torrent client (program) you decide to use. Some of them are loaded with malware. Including some that used to be legit! I do not know which one is now recommended
Yes, you have to seed. Don't be a leech
If you have a reliable source of direct downloads (which is when you just download something directly from a website through your browser), then using a VPN with malware + mining protection is probably sufficient.
But if you want to know how I do it, then read on
I'm no good at highly-specific terminology, but I'll do my best. I use Usenet to get all of my media. Yes, it's still around! And you are going to have to be brave and get a bit technical to use it. Not a lot technical, but a bit.
You'll also notice that several of these links just point you to r/usenet. Feel free to bail on me and follow their much more complete information!
Similar to above, you can't do this 100% for free (or at least you probably shouldn't). In this case, you need a newsgroup provider in order to let your computer navigate the system. Usenet is completely decentralized, newsreaders are your access. All of your Usenet traffic will flow through this service, not unlike a VPN (they are not VPNs, though some may provide VPN services alongside).
Media specifically is going to be in the form of NZB files. Similar to (but not quite the same as) torrent files, they are not media themselves but they allow our computers and newreaders find the media we want. Unlike torrenting, you do not need to seed.
Next step is we need an indexer. This is where we get NZB files from. Most that are worth a damn cost money, but many offer a one-time lifetime fee instead of a subscription.
The indexer you choose will provide you with an API key. We'll need this for our newsreader to talk to the indexer. It's kinda like signing in to a website or service.
While I haven't provided any other recommendations (largely to cover my butt), here I do recommend SABnzbd, Radarr, and Sonarr (all of them together; Radarr is for movies and Sonarr is for shows). This is gonna let us automate (almost) the entire process!
I'm not going to blow-by-blow this part, even though it's the most "technical." There are guides (I linked some already) and I don't think it would be useful to summarize. But we can talk through the flow:
You tie your indexer into these three programs via API key and point them at each other (again, follow the guides). Then we can do some cool stuff:
You could, theoretically, manually browse your indexer (most provide regular websites), download a NZB file, stick it in SABnzbd, and then deal with the resulting file. Or you could browse the much nicer GUIs of Sonarr and Radarr, select what you want, and wait. Sonarr and Radarr also have scheduling, so they will automatically queue up downloads when a movie releases or as new episodes of a show come out. We already told SABnzbd where we want our files to live, so once the download is done we can go there, open it, and watch!
ORRRR we could go a step cooler still
I also use Plex, which lets you point it at a folder (or folders) and it will set up a Netflix-like experience. If you point it at the folder(s) that you have SABnzb saving files into, then you've got a not-quite-entirely automated process of an updating personal streaming service. If you've tagged a show and a new season comes out? So long as your indexer hasn't gone tits-up you get new episodes as they launch in the quality you have pre-selected.
I even built a custom computer specifically to run this whole setup (with 24TB of space, which is nothing, trust me).
There's so much depth I'm not going into. Each of these tools and concepts go on and on, with bunches of customization options that I haven't fully explored. All in all it's a very cool experience that I cannot recommend enough.
This probably came off very rambling and not quite useful. But I hope it's enough information for you to do your own deep dive and figure out the best solution for you

so for my Plex server i'm using a neat little app called Sonarr
when you set it up it will automatically download new episodes of a show you're following (with the torrent site of my choice)
and it's so smart i love it. it just KNOWS when the next episode will be out, it was telling me jan 26 for a show in particular instead of yesterday because it knows the show was skipping this week and airing next week.
love it.

EVERYTHING BELOW IS A JOKE, IN MINECRAFT, IN MY IMAGINATION, BUT:
I've seen many guides around in the past before, this one is mine, and it's how to build a complete streaming setup that allows you to cancel every streaming service while still using your smart TV's as normal and keeping a decent library.
It's in two parts:
After Building your NAS you'll want to install TrueNAS Scale: https://www.truenas.com/truenas-scale/
Make sure the install does not include your storage drives, you want to save that for your pool later.
Once you've installed the base OS you'll want to set up your Pool and Datasets, setting up the pool is as easy as following a wizard. I normally go with RAIDZ, but if you're not worried about losing anything and want to use every bit of storage you've got go with Striped.
Next build out your datasets, you can do it however you want but I organize it like this:
Tumblr media
Now you're going to want to go to Credentials > Local Groups > Add > name the group media > checkmark allow all sudo commands > checkmark allow all sudo commands with no password > note down the GID > click Save.
Now this next part you're going to do several times for every app that you plan on installing: go to Credentials > Local Users > Click Add > For full name put the name of the app > toggle on "disable password" > toggle off "create new primary group" > change the primary group to media > checkmark allow all sudo commands > checkmark allow all sudo commands with no password > uncheck Samba Authentication > Note down the user UID/GID and click Save. And like I said, you will do this one time for every app, so like radarr, sonarr, lidarr, plex, etc.
After installing TrueNAS Scale, building your pool, setting up your datasets, and building your accounts/groups you'll install the *arr's using this script:
Make sure to follow all of the instructions on that page.
Sonarr is not included in there but that's okay we're now going to go to use the local docker install, so go to Apps > click on Discover Apps > search for Sonarr > install > make sure to use the right user/group UID/GID that you noted earlier.
Next in that same page you'll want to install your download clients, either Bittorrent or NZB, I'll leave it up to you what you get but make sure that you made a user for it to set permissions for it.
Finally at the end you'll install your streaming service, either Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby. Same as before, make sure you use the right UID/GID for user/group.
Then lastly you'll install Overseerr for Plex or Jellyseerr for Jellyfin to manage all of it. You'll use the wizard to connect it to your Plex/Jellyfin and then to your Sonarr/Radarr installs.
HAVE FUN.....IN MY OWN HEAD, IN A RHETORICAL PLACE.
People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

reminder to ppl that cant be bothered to download each episode or movie individually, or cant remember when something is supposed to drop to use sonarr and radarr along with qbittorrent
you can just set it up to download once stuff is available, so its great for people with awful memory
also use 1337x.to and galaxytorrents.to for movies and series and use nyaa.si for anime and manga <3
check YouTube revanced for an add free experience
remember u can use ublock origin on firefox if you are using an android phone. sadly this isnt an option on apple devices
if you like reading manga check mihon on github, its great for reading and downloading manga :3
piracy is great and i cant stand ppl trying to gatekeep it or silencing conversations about it
also jellyfinn is a great tool if you want to see your pirated media from any device in your home (phones, smart tvs, computers, tablets)
if anyone ever wants or needs guidance on this hit me up <3
Tumblr media
I feel like this stuff is part of some kind of psyops.
I've had people give me a hard time for posting about how to pirate / encouraging people to pirate and it's always when I'm not even talking about niche sites. I've gotten it over me posting about like fmovies or yts or 1337x (all of which are so well known that Wikipedia has articles about how they've already been sued or removed from google search results for copyright infringement).
Any copyright holders that are looking to curtail piracy are already aware of what's out there. The only person who isn't aware is that random friend or follower who still thinks it's reasonable to pay $15 to "buy" a YouTube streamable copy of a Hollywood movie.
Also! If they get shut down then that's fine! There are already alternatives! And if they're shut down too then those alternatives can be replaced! Possibly by something more resilient!

I've got more, they're all non-ponies, but I'll put them in a part two so this doesn't get too long! I am going to try to do more, even though we only have a week left, but if I don't get to, I'm happy with the pieces I managed. Let me just say that everyone I attacked or who attacked me were SO sweet, and SO NICE, and SO TALENTED, and it was a pleasure to draw for them/ I thank them for their love and art!
