Whitewashing in Anime - Soma ft. Usopp

Avoiding "Brown"

Here is an image of Soma comparing his skin tone from the first season of Black Butler and the current season airing now. As you can see, Soma's skin is noticeably lighter than it was in the past. I considered the lighting and took shade from his hand that looks relatively mid tone. However, that's not really a fair excuse if the anime continues to lighten Soma's face this way.

I also compared his skintone from the Book of Circus season which is relatively more recent, and chose images where he's clearly in good lighting. Soma is still noticeably lighter this time around.

Whitewashing is an incredibly common phenomenon that been happening a lot lately in anime, especially with reboots. A great example I can think of off the top of my head is One Piece where they lightened nearly everyone's skin color in the anime, despite some of the cast being characters of color?

(^^^this character is canonly black according to Oda, the mangaka.)

"Oh but Oda gives Usopp pale skin in all his color illustrations"

One, he should know better. Two, if Oda said Usopp would be African in real life, and chose a brown, Jamaican-american actor to play him, then yes, they have been ridiculously disrespectful in how they've been portraying the character's racial features so far.

In that sense, it's actually relief that anime studios in the past weren't afraid of giving their characters darker skin unlike mangakas who were terrified of even the lighest shade of brown.

For instance, I am happy that A-1 studios made Soma, Agni, and Mina, who are all the same race, slightly differ in skin tone. Mina's skin is cooler toned compared to Soma and Agni's warmer hues.

HOWEVER, and other fans pointed this out, Soma and Agni's skin leaned so far from being golden brown to straight yellow in many scenes, that they were walking around like they have jaundice which is so... Of course A-1 studios found some way to mess it up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Another thing, do you guys honestly think being accurate to Yana's art style is always the best thing to do in adaptions? Angela Blanc, the secret villain in the anime original first season, pretends to be an abused maid and gets whipped in her very first scene. And according to Yana's concept sketches, she was originally brown. I'm actually glad the anime whitewashed her in that instance.

I'd like to point out, Sebastian's skin tone has also changed in the new season, and he's noticeably tanner than his previous anime appearances and yana's illustrations. So why is this okay for the anime to make creative changes for sebastian's skin tone, but have to stay accurate for Soma? (whose dark skin been established in anime viewers' eyes for decades now).

To be fair, I did a comparison of the anime grayscaled and Soma in the manga during the Weston arc. I checked the values and while I will say that his skin is relatively in the same as the manga, only few degrees lighter, whitewashing isn't only about skintone.

Colourism in Features

We could argue whether its just different anime styles or the way Yana draws noses, but its not a great look for Soma's nose to be made noticeably sharper compared to his flatter/rounder nose in the manga/earlier seasons of the anime.

Talking about the Mandela effect and cognitive dissonance as well... there's also something about how manga readers seen Soma with brown skin and pure black hair years in the manga, only for the anime to lighten those features.

It doesn't help that Soma canonly has purple hair and yellow eyes (if anything, I do appreciate the more natural tones they gave Soma this season. No more highly saturated purple hair and yellow eyes!)

Yes, Kuroshitsuji is a fantasy story, and YES artists of color like to play with fantasy features with characters, me included! But my point is that black/brown representation in media is so little already, especially when character artists are also averse to drawing any defining racial features.

Yana has designed brown-skinned characters in the anime with straight white hair and light-colored eyes about three times now (ie. Agni, Angela, and Hannah). The only Indians with dark skin and hair are a bunch of homeless thugs that Soma and Agni stop from mugging Ciel, proving they're "one of the good ones", and Mina whose treatment in the manga/anime is abysmal.

Discussing Racism in Fandom

Alright, so over the past few days, I've seen some fans disappointed with Soma's skin tone change and I hope my post illustrates why they would be. But I've also seen some angry and frustrated reactions to those fans! And I want to ask, why?

Why is fans bringing up racism in anime considered "discourse" but reacting harshly towards those fans is not?

Why would fans expressing disappointment about whitewashing gets you more angry than the whitewashing itself?

Why is being disappointed that an anime lightened a character's skin tone, a character who both anime-only watchers and manga readers alike saw as dark-skinned, "stupid" to you?

How come the fandom gets a good laugh out of the usage of "fag" potentially canceling the anime, but talking about race is a "risk" to getting a new season?

And if you disagree with my points and believe the anime is only being accurate to Yana's work, why not just say "Soma's skintone is more accurate to Yana's color illustrations, but I understand the disappointment and shock," without being condescending towards us for being concerned in the first place?

I'd be pretty happy if the anime was just using intense lighting and that Soma is darker than he appears (in fact, if that happens I'll reblog the good news to this post!) Because this post isn't "discourse" to me, I'm discussing race regarding one of my favorite characters in the fandom. Discussions like these don't ruin the fandom, but actually help it become a more welcoming place for fans of color.

Kuro-Shit Mini Post

Yesterday, shortly after I posted my last haul on tumblr, these little guys showed up in a package!

These are the full set of 9 Public School Arc rubber mascot keychains, created by Bandai as capsule prizes.

As expected, the potential options include the main characters Sebastian and Ciel, as well as the four Prefects of Weston School. This second wave of released merchandise seems to have introduced Soma to the roster as well. (Undertaker makes an appearance as we approach wave 3)

Side Rant- Personally, I would have liked to see some Drudge representation but hopefully that will come at some point in the future perhaps as a 4th wave? Alternatively, maybe if and when they get around to animating the "Blue Cult Arc"...??

I have decided to show each keychain in closer detail and in order of my least to most favourite:

#9 SEBASTIAN "B-version"

This is the slightly more demonic design for Master Michaelis, appearing without his glasses so that you can better see his red eyes; It would have been a nice touch if his pupils had been shaped more into slits in my opinion.

Unfortunately, his gummy toothless grin does little for me.

#8 LAWRENCE BLUEWER

Bluewer is simply stood elegantly and reading his book.

Honestly, there is nothing wrong or particularly off-putting about his design, I just prefer other characters and poses to his.

#7 EDGAR REDMOND

I was a little disappointed with this keychain, as Redmond is a favourite character of mine.

Rather than looking sultry as I think was intended, he just looks a little sleep deprived. Also, I can't completely put my finger on why he looks out of place with the others... perhaps his face is too wide..?

That being said, I adore his sassy pose.

#6 SOMA ASMAN KADAR

I have found in the past, that merchandise of the prince is always very inconsistent and the pictures I saw online of this item I felt didn't look great. I was very pleasantly surprised however when I saw Soma's design in person.

My only gripe is the eyes lack the sclera, instead being filled with the same shade as his skin; This is true of all of the keychains but as the other characters have paler skin than him I feel that it is less noticeable overall.

Based on a particular moment in the series, this is adorable! Especially Ciel!

It would be higher on the list but something about Sebastian feels off again, but only slightly. Maybe the expression with the open mouth? or his abnormally small hand? Not sure but something about him is a little odd to me.

Finally, a Sebastian that I can fully get behind.

His tea coloured eyes behind his little tutoring glasses, his smug smirk and his formal pose as house master of the Sapphire Owls.

How could I not love the design of our demon in his human suit.

2017 - i drew a lot more pokemon this time ! idk why i didn't draw more of it digitally before. i had too much soul eater brainrot lmao. so i combined them! behold contestshipping x soma AU

2018 - this was the time when i got into K-pop! specifically Monsta X haha, i got more interested in doing fashion, especially for male characters~ (and i had to draw my beloved agenda, somakid)

2019 - my bias from MX, Minhyuk on a whale with Minggom! this was made for an artbook that was sent to him! i hope he got to see this along with my tiny message ;; i delved more into a new tiny chibi art style here

2020 - i drew way too much during this year and it led me to impossibly high standards for my art to this day //sobs. i redrew my Your Lie in April AU fanart and i really think i improved so much….. i went out of my comfort zone to really draw the background and the piano

2021 - genshin brainrot started here !! i was trying to find my style even more, and i love kokomi's color palette. i remember looking at 10x references and combining them into this specific pose in the fanart. i still think to this day this is one of my personal favorite art pieces of all time

2022 - another personal favorite art piece (and something my friend aura and a commissioner personally loved!), i was practicing on drawing men since i wasn't confident, but seeing how this turned out made me want to keep going ❤️

2023 - the latest maka & kid piece that i made! they are so precious to me. i love trying out new poses and dynamics, and i tried changing their outfits a bit more to highlight that i wanna try new fashion stuff ^^; i'd like to say it was a job well done ngl

2024 - and finally, a recent piece that i'm most proud of, and shows a lot of my art style (and i drew the background from scratch!). i redrew an old comic panel from a now discontinued comic, but i feel like i improved so much in terms of rendering, coloring, and anatomy!!

A summary of my Pokémon OC Jirou! I've been rotating him in my brain for a year and a half now and MAN I love putting this guy in Situations

Jirou Yasuda (he/him)

24 years old

He has an older brother, Soma (@manadyne's oc)

From Spikemuth, Galar and got isekai'd into Hisui by Arceus, seemingly out of nowhere

His ace Pokémon is an Alpha Flareon, Toasty. He'd do anything for Toasty and Toasty feels the same!

There's a Mysterious Force protecting Jirou (Arceus), that helps him recover even from more perilous situations. (It's Arceus.) It takes Jirou a while to realise that he should not be surviving the Pokémon attacks and high falls with mere scrapes as he does (Arceus can't let Their chosen one perish).

He does not feel like home or welcome in Jubilife. If people regard him with distrust after he does all these tasks as a member of the Survey Corps and Galaxy Team, and risks his life facing dangerous Pokémon, then he's not going to bother trying to get close to anyone.

Jirou does appreciate people like Laventon, Volo and Adaman who were chill with him from the start. He warms up to Irida too and he's glad to have these people around him.

Getting exiled from Jubilife village leaves him quite bitter. In his eyes he's done everything Commander Kamado asks of him, he's worked hard to help everyone and the reward for that is losing his shelter. Volo thankfully reaches out a helping hand and Jirou is holding onto that like a lifeline.

Even after Jirou is accepted back to the village, he does not Trust the people there. He rationalises that he'd rather camp outside and explore ruins with Volo than stay with people who might kick him out at the next inconvenience they decide is his fault.

Everything Jirou does is with the goal of getting back home to his brother. He's going to bear every misfortune because surely, once he finds Arceus, he can go home.

Arceus has other plans though. They want Jirou to remain in Hisui, to protect the land as one of Their nobles, as a branch of Them with divine powers.

Jirou does not take well to realising that he's going to be stuck "protecting" a land that he knows will prosper in the future, a land that is not his home in any way or form.

His big brother Soma is not going to leave him trapped in the past though, as the new Galarian champion, he and Eternatus are gonna Get That Boy Home

And now he's in Paldea, living a much better life! Reuniting with Volo after seeing him teach a class in the academy was quite baffling but a happy surprise!

I could write So Much More about him because this guy is spinning in my brain at top speed, but I'm going to spare you all from my brainworms. If you read this far, I appreciate it and I'm hoping good things are coming your way <3

Southasian BB thoughts :3

Ahhhh my gah. A bit of a side note about how black butlers racism got better and worse over time. The portrayal of Indian culture has always vexed me because imo, sometimes it had such an incredibly profound usage of Hindu imagery, and extremely accurate cultural depictions clearly as a result of research. But then you get the random bits of stereotyping and the occasional belly dancing fit??? Hey i thought you guys knew better???

Anyways. I do want to be positive on this post. VERY fond of how Sebastian, out of respect for Agni, doesn't ridicule him for his faith and in fact uses it to encourage him. He retells him the story of Shiva and Kali after Agni apologizes for betraying Soma and the rest of the group because he and Soma were able to get past their shortcomings and understand each other better. Which is incredibly sweet and incredibly surprising coming from Sebastian.

And then of course, infamously the shot of Soma holding Agnis ashes with the caption saying he'd follow the path of Ma Kali... that was raw as FUUUUUCK. That moves me every time. Kali is supposed to be a defender, a manifestation of righteous rage, exactly what Soma was... he wanted to help people so much but the despair of not being able to make a proper change is leading him to drastic, violent actions... Ohhhhh I am ILLLLLL. AND EVEN when he says his actions are meaningless in the end, he still gives the child the jewellery he beat the thugs for because deep down he still wants to help... oh my god. Maybe I will forgive Black Butler for the occasional hatecrime/j/lh

I unironically believe Soma and Agni are some of the best, most fleshed out Southasian portrayals in animanga, or even general mainstream media. WHICH IS WEIRD CONSIDERING... the random racism... but I love them so so dearly and hold them close to my heart I will always love them even though i was puking in my mouth a little at the start (not at them ofc). Looking past the initial party animal/religious stereotypes, they are both very sympathetic and the kindest characters that have the repsect of their peers, not just because of their status but their legitimate good attitudes. They have mostly major roles even if not main. They have development and aren't just props used to propel their white peers, (besides ciel using em but he uses everyone and that's something else). They are allowed to be human. And god. God do i love them ❤

I keep thinking abt that panel where Sebastian tells phantomstaff to get on their knees and pray to Agni for even a sliver of his talent because they are useless bastards and i keep laughing really hard

Soma wasn't initially one of my favorite characters. If anything, I used to find him a bit annoying. But after re-watching the anime, re-reading part of the Manga (and no spoilers, but the poor guy goes through HELL in the later chapters) and now seeing him in this season, he's actually kind of grown on me. It's funny how he can be several years older than Ciel and yet he's so innocent and adorable, if more than a little naive. But, while it still gets annoying at times, it's gotten to the point where, in my opinion at least, it's endearing. Love this little purple-haired curry bun!

Hello and happy 4/20 friends! 😎🚬 In honor of the holiday, it is finally time to unveil a very special new fic! This one is a joint (hehe) effort between myself and my dearest pal @moriohpissky - our degenerate little love child, Summer Nights! Maka Albarn doesn’t smoke weed.

The pungent, earthy taste in her mouth begs to differ, as well as the heat in her blood and the lag in her thoughts, the weightlessness of her limbs and the floating sensation permeating her senses.

Maka Albarn doesn’t hook up with guys she isn’t dating. She doesn’t hook up with anyone at all, ever, in fact.

The current body of evidence points to the contrary. 

The rustle of bed sheets beneath her and the tickle of rough lips tracing the line of her pulse, the callused hands cradling her face and slowly mapping the curve of her waist. The warm, intoxicating weight of a body–solid, hard, masculine–pressed against hers and the soft, pale hair tangled between her fingers. The heat of his breath and the lingering taste of smoke when his mouth presses to her lips, the click of her teeth against his and the slow, tentative trace of his tongue around hers as the kiss deepens.

Maybe, she thinks to herself, somewhat distantly, if Maka Albarn doesn’t do any of those things, then maybe… maybe, just for a little while, I can be someone else.

Oikawa and reader don't hit it off at first, but they end up needing to be stuck with each other to make reports about the court usage to the school's council

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

I groan, gripping my hair and turning to our teams’ co captain.

“They can’t go to a sports center or anything?”

He shakes his head, glancing around.

“It’s a big court, Y/n. It won’t be too bad sharing. Besides, we could make friends!”

I scowl at him.

“This isn’t a kids show, Soma. We aren’t making any friends.”

He sighs.

“Would it hurt you to loosen up a little? If you go to university and you see any of those volleyball members, you’ll know someone!”

“I don’t care! They’re all so weird, I don’t want to see them in my court or anywhere else.”

“It’s not even your court, it’s the coaches. Shut up and deal with it, Y/n.”

Soma slapped the back of my head and I groaned. He can be annoying sometimes, but he always has reason on his mind.

I roll my eyes, playfully shoving him back.

“Fine. But if I see them on my court during our practices, I’ll blow a fuse.”

Soma rolled his eyes.

“You’re so dramatic.”

After classes that day, I had scheduled to meet with the volleyball team captain, Tooru Oikawa. I knew who he was, sure. He was some annoying lady’s man who was probably gay and was really good at volleyball. His best friend, Hajime Iwaizumi, was alright. We had some classes together in second year and we got along.

Oikawa is a whole different story, though. He has a fake nice aura about him, like he’s secretly some evil person. Walking to where we agreed to meet, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I appeared in front of the gardening club shed and leaned against the wall, waiting patiently for the volleyball captain. After a while, I checked my watch and scowled.

Seven minutes past when he agreed to show up. 

I gave him some more time, and just as I was about to leave, he came jogging over.

“Sorry for being late, some girls wanted to chat.”

He smiled, and I gave him a look of disdain.

“Don’t care, didn’t ask. You’re late.”

He blinks at me and crosses his arms defensively.

“Ladies first, man. I had to chat with them.”

“Why, so you can keep up your high school Q? Pathetic.”

He gave me an offended look and scowled at me.

“I’m sorry, okay? Can we plan this thing?”

I roll my eyes and nod, pulling out my phone.

“Do you guys do morning practices?”

“Yeah. Afternoon too. You?”

“Same.”

I grimace, writing some things in my notes app.

“Hmm.. what are your practice days?”

“Monday, Wednesday, Friday.”

“Yeah, that won’t work.”

He huffs, shifting his weight to one leg and placing his hand on his hip.

“And why not?”

“Those are our days too. We’ll have to split things up.”

He nods in understanding.

“Sure. One team takes Monday and Thursday and the other gets Tuesday and Friday?”

“That works.”

I tap at the keyboard on my phone, writing it down. 

“As for Wednesday, one team can take the court during the afternoon and the other during the morning.”

He hums in agreement.

“My team can take Tuesday and Friday, as well as afternoon practice on Wednesday.”

“It’s my court, Oikawa. Don’t get greedy.”

I eye the boy, before typing on my phone again. I was perfectly fine with my team going Monday and Thursday. He sighs.

“Then we can go M-“

“It’s fine. Now.”

I put my phone into my pocket and glare at Oikawa.

“If I see any volleyballs or any of your equipment on my court on any of our days, we’ll have problems. Got it?”

He rolls his eyes.

“Fine.”

Telling the school how the usage of the court was going was strange. I was used to doing it by myself, or occasionally with Soma. Doing it with Oikawa was weird.

“Nobody is doing drugs.”

I glare at Oikawa. That came out of nowhere.

“We clean up after ourselves after each practice. It’s just the basketball team and the volleyball team.”

The council nods.

“The teams are getting along?”

I shrug.

“Yeah. We don’t fight at all, but we don’t talk much.”

“The basketball team is very hospitable towards us. It’s quite nice.”

The council nods again, taking in our facial expressions and body language.

“Are the captains getting along?”

“For the most part.”

Oikawa smiled nervously and I roll my eyes.

“We don’t talk much. It’s normally nice banter.”

I could tell the council knew we weren’t being completely truthful, but they didn’t seem to care.

Leaving the room, Oikawa sighed. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye and rolled my eyes.

“You would say we weren’t doing drugs why?”

“It’s a genuine response!”

He clicks his tongue.

“It’s dumb to say, they’ll think the opposite.”

“They know me, L/n. They know I make jokes.”

He shrugs, walking to a vending machine. I have half the mind to stay with him and half the mind to walk away.

I walk away.

“Hey, L/n, wait up!”

Oikawa walks over, handing me a soda while holding one for himself. I raise an eyebrow at him and he looks away.

“Just enjoy it. You were here and I didn’t want to be rude.”

I sigh, cracking open the can and taking a swig. Strangely, he knew one of my favorites. I looked at him curiously, and he was sipping at the same kind. Maybe he just liked the flavor.

“What are you doing after this?”

“Going home and then something’ll happen. Why?”

“It’s just something to talk about.”

He shrugs.

“How’s the team doing?”

“We’re alright. Kyotani gets out down by Iwa-chan whenever he tries to start something. Or by Yahaba, he listens to him too, strangely.”

I think back to the volleyball club members. Iwaizumi, the ace and co captain. Kyotani is a second year with anger issues Oikawa likes to call Mad Dog. Yahaba was a second year who didn’t contribute much but was a good player nonetheless.

“You could try practicing with us, if you wanted.”

“I don’t play volleyball.”

He scoffs.

“So? You could just join us. Doesn’t matter if you’re any good.”

“Why do you want me there so bad?”

His face turns red and he looks at the floor.

“Forget it.”

He walks away, presumably to try e basketball court. I shrug, watching his back.

A few days after that, Oikawa and I got stuck in the rain. He had come to watch basketball practice, saying the sport could be interesting to learn about, and then stayed behind to help Soma and I clean up.

Soma left, since he had an umbrella, but here I was with Oikawa. The chocolate haired boy grabbed an umbrella from his bag and opened it up.

“Walk with me?”

I sighed, taking it from him and walking with him to my home. It was kind of peaceful. The rain sounds above and around us, the smell.

He would occasionally look at me but wouldn’t say anything. He’s very strange. 

Sometimes he would step in a puddle and curse, but then would quiet down and we would be silent again.

We got to my house, and he said a silent goodbye before leaving. Normally he would chat with me, tell me some things, but he’s been awfully quiet today.

Oikawa would shy away whenever he saw me. Weird, since we still report to the council and I have to unlock the gun every morning the volleyball team practices.

Once, I tried striking up a conversation with him and he walked away like I hadn’t said a thing.

Today, I entered the gym and found him cleaning up after their afternoon practice with Iwaizumi.

I walked over to the volleyball captain.

“Hey, Oikawa. What’s up?”

He looked at me, but didn’t say anything. I sighed.

“What’s up with you, man? You seem to dislike me even more.”

He shakes his head.

“Never disliked you.”

“Then what’s up? Tell me.”

“After I finish cleaning.”

I roll my eyes but agree, going outside the gym and leaning against the wall. Iwaizumi leaves first, saying bye to me and going on his way.

I zero in on Oikawa when he steps out, and he groans.

“I’ll get right to it, okay?”

I nod, staring blankly into his eyes.

“I’ve got a crush on you.”

I furrow my brows. Not what I was expecting.

“No way.”

“Yes way! And, that time I got you a soda, i thought I could ask you out then, but you were being weird, like you didn’t like me at all, so I chickened out!”

I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose.

“Ignoring someone isn’t the way to go. Should have told me, Tooru.”

He looks at his feet, and I rolled my eyes.

“I guess I can give you a chance.”

He looked up, his eyes full of hope.

“Really?”

“Yeah…”

Dating Oikawa was quite interesting. He was sweet to you, very nice. Always offered to pay for your things and opened doors for you, although he acted like a princess. 

You could feel yourself falling for him, having the urge to pamper him and kiss his cheeks. Maybe he wasn’t ready for that.

You cleared your throat, handing Oikawa a bento box. He swooned at you, thanking you and taking your hand as he put it safely into his locker.

He walked you to your class before leaving to go to his.

You sighed as you watched him walk away. What a sweetheart.
