Another Coco "What If" AU, but this time Héctor actually recorded some tunes

Heavily inspired by the story of how Ryo Fukui's album "My Favorite Tunes" was rediscovered through his widow, Yasuko in 2017.

After the news broke out about de la Cruz's lies (and alleged murder) of his buried-by-time duet partner, musician, and songwriter Héctor Rivera, rumors of never-before-seen and extremely rare recordings of the latter performing either with de la Cruz or by himself circulated amongst certain circles, mostly fans of lost media and buried history.

Talks like this had been going around for ages, but it wasn't until mid-2018 when a shoe-maker family's son named Miguel Rivera came out with stories of how de la Cruz stole his great-great grandfather's songs and skull guitar complete with physical proof that the topic of lost recordings suddenly became one of the hottest topics in México. Miguel himself joined in on the hunt, which lasted for quite some time well past 2018 and was postponed due to the pandemic.

And then, in 2021. A miracle.

Either Mamá Coco had completely forgotten about it or it had been a secret that she had purposely kept to herself for Miguel to discover, but there were some other things she had kept hidden from her mother... five 78 rpm records pre-dating 1921, all sent by Héctor. Recordings of him singing by himself, with Ernesto, or just simple guitar arrangements of his other songs. Kept in secret by Mamá Coco somewhere in a corner of Miguel's hideout left unchecked after Imelda threw them out along with other objects related to music. Other 78s were later on discovered by a descendant of de la Cruz's inside the family estate and in various antique shops, all collecting dust. They were amongst the most important relics of Héctor's legacy, besides his red songbook containing the first composition for "Remember Me".

After efforts of digitizing came out successful (despite the damage done by age, the recordings were miraculously salvageable), "Recuérdame: The Lost Recordings of Héctor Rivera (1919-1921)" was released. Calling the album a sensation was an understatement. Rave reviews started coming out, stating that Héctor's warm voice reminded listeners of home and warm sunrays, and how one can feel the heartache and longing for his family from the way he strums his guitar alone, even if his voice is not as strong and commanding as de la Cruz's. His grito is oftentimes said to be addicting and infectious as well, with some claiming that they ended up doing it along. Others lamented over "what could have been" after listening to Rivera and de la Cruz's harmonizing and clear-as-day dynamic as a duet. Shortly after, the skeletal remains of Héctor Rivera were found in an unmarked grave in México City.

It not only solidified Héctor Rivera's legacy (thus directly affecting Héctor's overall health in the Land Of The Dead for the better), but it also largely improved the Riveras' overall economy with royalties from Héctor's never-before-seen music, in addition to the already booming shoe-making business and Miguel's own efforts as a musician. All because Miguel decided to steal a guitar that turned out to be rightfully his.

It is safe to say that Héctor Rivera is now considered one of the greatest songwriters and poets in the history of Mexican music.

The walk to her room was relatively short, Héctor still awed that he could see the home that had grown so much in his absence. The nursery was unlocked, and after peeking inside for...well, he wasn't really sure what, Héctor stepped inside and headed for the crib in the corner.

"Hola little princessa," Héctor cooed to the little girl currently wiggling around, reaching down to run a finger across her cheek. The touch seemed to confuse her for a moment, and Héctor bent down to carefully scoop her up and into his arms, his heart all but melting at the fussy bundle in his arms. "You should be resting."

As expected, she doesn't respond, only letting out soft cries and whimpers as Héctor begins to rock her back and forth. With a blink, he can see the small half of his and Imelda's bedroom that had held his Coco's crib in the early months, dressed in the fabric Héctor had gotten for a song in town as she listened to her father with wide eyes.

"Ssh ssh mí corazón." Slowly, the little girl in his arms began to calm, whimpers and cries turning into hiccups and sniffles as she listened to the gentle voice above her. "You know, I used to sing this lullaby to my Coco. Would you like to hear it?"

Big eyes look up at him, and Héctor knows that if he was skeletal, he would have fallen to pieces at the sight. His daughter's namesake had the same gleam in her eyes after she'd stopped crying, of being comforted by someone she knows loves her more than he could ever hope to say aloud, so he settles for a song. Héctor begins to hum as he begins to sway in tune, slowly circling the room as he begins to sing the song he held closest to his heart, even after all this time.

"...Remember me, don’t let it make you cry… For even if I'm far away... I hold - I hold you - I- I - in my...” It's the soft noise of pure wonder from Socorro that breaks him, little hands reaching up towards his face as he sinks to his knees with a hiccup. Years' worth of regrets and anguish threaten to rise over him like a tidal wave, dragging him out into that darkness he'd skirted the edges of for 97 years, but it's the little hands on his chin that drive it all back. Though she's blurry through the tears that seem to have no end, Socorro's smile as she plays with his goatee makes the musician want to belt out a grito, settling instead with a gentle kiss on her forehead.

"You're such a special niña pequeña, I hope you never forget that."

"She may right now, but I know her hermano will remind her." Héctor nearly jumped at the sudden voice behind him, looking up to see Carmen giving him a gentle smile. "Are you alright?"

"That...I don't know?" Héctor shrugged as he got to his feet, tucking Socorro a little closer as Carmen joined him. "I- you want her back?"

"No, you can hold her a little longer." She moved to the crib, adjusting the sheet scrunched up in one corner, watching from the corner of her eye as Héctor rocked Socorro, who was already halfway to dreamland in her bisabuelo's arms as he hummed the lullaby he'd been unable to finish. There wasn't much of a need for Carmen to hover as she watched Héctor succeeding in getting the infant to sleep, all but gliding across the room to settle her back into her crib with a soft murmur.

"Gracias...this means a lot to me."

"You don't need to thank us." Carmen gently reached out to rest her hand on his forearm, smiling at the slightly wide-eyed look on his face. "Come, I think we could all get some rest."

"Lead the way, señorita."

His sister turned to look back at him with eyes wide as saucers, arms tight around Dante’s neck. “Miguel?” she whispered. “I see dead people.”

So in your AU, I was thinking....you said Antonio Madrigal does not yet have a romantic partner, and Socorro Rivera does not yet have a romantic partner, so.......

You said Mirabel was 15 and Miguel was 16 when they met. Antonio is ten years younger than Mirabel, and Miguel was 12 or 13 when Socorro was born, so Antonio would be one or two years older than Socorro.

And his cousin married her brother, so they have reason to meet each other! Suppose one day Socorro is visiting her brother and his kids. And obviously she's met Antonio before, but now it's a few years later, she's a young woman now, he's a young man now (late teens/early 20s?), suddenly they start looking at each other in a completely new light....

Hm...

Who knows.

Maybe I'll consider it.

I don't have much to go off of for Miguel's sister, personality wise, which is why I didn't pair them up before.

Maybe one day though. Who knows?

They could be still trying to figure themselves out and maybe one day they'll end up together or Antonio could take after his Tio and be happily single.

I keep thinking of an AU where Imelda died only a couple of months or years after Héctor did. So all that's left is Oscar and Felipe and Coco, and the twins aren't able to take care of Coco. They want to, but they're, like, teenagers, and there's no other family to help them. They don't have much money; they don't have steady jobs, only being hired by whoever needs any odd jobs done around town, or maybe they do but it doesn't pay enough. They don't know how to make shoes as well as Imelda did, they're not earning enough.

Now, the twins themselves would be fine. They can rent a room or live out of the inn or something. But they can't have that for Coco.

Coco needs a home. She needs proper nourishing food, she needs to have a place to live that won't keep changing all around town every couple of months, she needs toys and clothes, she needs people who'll be able to devote all their attention to her like her parents did. The twins aren't able to give her any of this, not at the moment with things as they are.

So they ask Ernesto care for her.

Sure, they haven't seen Ernesto ever since Héctor ran off on them a couple years ago, but he was Héctor's best friend, he knows Coco, he used to babysit her sometimes. Ernesto's not as famous yet as he will someday be, but he's pretty well known, so it's easy for the twins to track him down, and he has plenty of money, enough to easily afford to take care of a child, or hire caretakers, or whichever he does. Coco will always have enough to eat, a safe place to live, with someone familiar. It's not the same as her parents, of course, but it's the best they can do. They figure Ernesto will be able to care for her until they earn & save enough money to get on their feet and properly raise their niece. Hopefully it won't take too long.

Ernesto agrees to take Coco in. Not that he wants to, but of course his reputation is very important to him, and it'd look bad if he refused to care for his missing best friend's orphaned daughter. 

I haven't figured out yet if he ends up doting on her like a daughter because he feels guilty about Héctor, or if he avoids her as much as possible because she reminds him of Héctor, or if he's cruel to her because he's still angry at Héctor for leaving him (twice - the second time when he decided to go home, the first time when he married Imelda) or what.

On the plus side, at least Imelda and Héctor get to reconcile in death. Since Imelda died so soon after Héctor, maybe she was still holding out hope that he'd come home at the time, thinking he was sick or his letters had been mislaid or whatever she must have been thinking in canon when his letters first stopped. And she wouldn't have so many years of bitterness against him for leaving. So when she encounters him in the Land of the Dead she figures that some tragic accident must have befallen him on the road and Ernesto for some reason never told her (as opposed to in canon where when she saw Héctor after she died she probably thought he'd died twenty or thirty years after he'd left her and Coco or something).

Notes

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.

Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.

Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.

The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.

Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.

Terri attempts to dance before his other half stops him.

Hank carries Marlin, Dory, and Nemo in a coffee pot.

Voyd and Abby giddily bounce in place, clearly the most excited for the photo.

Linguini carries Remy while Colette holds Django and Emile.

Being stationary volcanoes, Uka and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap and his gang to hold it so they can be in the group picture.

Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.

Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.

So I was wondering if coco had a sequel I wished Socorro & Marco to be the new main character so I made this IF!au Unlike the rest of the Riveras, Socorro loves music yet lacks of talent. On the day of Dia de los muertos, she accidentally falls to the land of the dead,(probably she tried to steal hector’s guitar like Miguel did so she can prove that she has a talent like her brother) -where she meets the real great-great grandson of Ernesto De la cruz, Marco. Marco is also a gifted child like Miguel, but he struggles with his preoccupation of being a descendent of Ernesto/having less talent compared to Miguel. He decides to visit his great-great-grandfather at the land of the dead not just because he wants to prove he is worthy of being a musician, but to prove he’s better than his grandfather. While Socorro and Marco’s wandering around the LOD, on the living world, Miguel finds out that Socorro’s gone missing, and decides to take another trip to the land of the dead, by his will, this time.
