Anyway if you want my thoughts on Djel and the sacred-ness within nature and how Kaz and Matthias are actually kind of mirrors of what their country stands for despite being absolutely destroyed by the very things that their countries idolize (greed and unquestioned arguably misguided faith, respectively), it's coming in this next God I Want To Feel Again chapter and I will totally write my whole essay on my headcanons about it if you like.

Don't think about Nina in the snow. Nina and Matthias digging a grave for Nestor in the freezing cold. Nina recognising her classmate being the Grisha drugged with parem and manipulated to fight even to his death. Nina realizing that worst case scenario on their mission, it'd be her who would be the drugged Grisha this time.

"So this tree," Kaz started, but Matthias cut him off.

"You are not touching Djel's sacred ash," Matthias spat, "I won't allow it."

"Keep it down, I'm just asking for more information," Kaz retorted. He continued walking, the off-beat sound of his footsteps out of loop with the rythmic click of Dimitri's nails against the glass of the bridge.

"It is the heart of the White Island. The holy cambium, the life bark of the rest of Djerholm. I have only been close to it in person once, at my graduation ceremony. When I became druskelle proper. There is," Matthias faltered for a moment, debating on how best to explain such a spiritual topic to someone like Brekker, "… there is a courtyard of sorts, surrounded by arches. In it's centermost point lies the tree. On most days is quiet, unless a ceremony is to be taking place. And … I cannot… Kaz, this is the most sacred place in all of Fjerda. The very tree itself is sustained by the spirit of Djel."

"Is it the only one?" Kaz asked, tilting his head.

Matthias blinked several times, a poor effort to hide his suprise, "What do you mean?"

They stopped walking, the low light of the bridge doing little to dampen the sharpness of Kaz's gaze, "Is this tree the only one Djel has ever sustained?"

"I… I do not know," Matthias frowned thoughtfully.

Dimitri sat down, bowing his head as he tried to get a better look at Kaz's expression, "It is not something we ever really bother to ask. It is like asking if there is more than one Ghezen."

"There is only one Ghezen I know of, but he never claims to have a direct contact with his customers," Kaz shrugged, "He's a God, allegedly, and we're humans. The two don't tend to rub elbows amongst each other. But if this tree is a piece of Djel, is it the only one?"

"We are told that every tree is connected," Matthias spoke softly, "Every tree is a part of Djel. They communicate with their roots, interlocking so they can warn each other of danger or guide each other to new nutrients and water. Each tree draws it's life from Djel's lifeblood, a connection to the deeper world around it. I guess in a way, that means every tree is being sustained by Djel. But, this tree is different. It's… more direct. Like it is the true manifestation of Djel, the parent or progenitor tree that each new sappling sprouts off of. The ash's silver bark sparkles like sunlight on the water, it's leaves are soft to the touch and feel like petals of a flower. Even so, no chill can rot it. None of the winds are strong enough to shake it. It never so much as drops a twig on the ground. I have never seen something like it. Some say Djel's voice even lingers in the roots of the tree, able to be heard by those who's faith is strong enough."

Matthias could not help the wistful tone of his voice as he spoke. Some of his former bunkmates swore they had heard the gentle whisper of Djel, but Matthias had only heard his own breathing as he knelt before the ash.

"It sounds like a vital organ," Kaz hummed.

"It is an apt description. This sacred ash is comparable to the heart of Djel."

"But is it the only vital organ? If it is the heart, where are Djel's lungs? Does he not feel a need to breathe in the life of the world he created? What about his kidneys? Where does he screen out the damage and waste that pollutes his children? And what about the brain? The stomach? The liver?"

Matthias sighed loudly, turning on his heel to continue walking if only to stop looking at Kaz,"I knew you were mocking me, but this is -"

Kaz's hand shot out, grabbing Matthias's wrist with a harsh grip, "I wasn't joking. Matthias. If this tree is the heart of Djel why would it be the only one? Think about it. Djel is a part of everything in nature, right? Where is he then? Why would he only be here, behind these walls, when everything he makes up is out there? And more importantly, why are you being told this place is the only place in the world where you can find him?"

As soon as he finished speaking he let go, as if Matthias's skin had branded his palm.

Kanej's kid: *spots Nina and Matthias trying to pretend they're another couple at the restaurant* AUNT NINA??? UNCLE MATTHIAS???
