One of the most annoying things you see from tes fans is seeing each race as a unified collective in ways that the games don’t even do. They act like the ways some members of a race act in some places represents all of them everywhere. The biggest and most frustrating version of this is when talking about the way Dunmer are treated in Windhelm, people bring up the in-universe racism in Morrowind. Like, that doesn’t justify the way they're treated in Windhelm at all. You really think Ulfric is doing this for justice for the Khajiit and Argonians (who he won't let in the city)? Even if he was, do you think it's right to enact that "justice" on random refugees and their descendants? We’re talking about different groups of Dunmer. They aren’t a monolith. IN MORROWIND they aren’t a monolith. The head of the anti-slavery organization in Morrowind (the game) is a Dunmer. Every province and race had different cultures and subcultures with folks with different opinions that people like this like to ignore.

These people act like it's clever to bring this up when in reality it reflects an even shallower interpretation of the worldbuilding imo.

(and that's not even touching on how comments like these reflect the language used in real life discussions of refugee asylum and immigration)

Do you have any mod recommendations for civilian Breton clothing to help them look more visually distinct? With Bruma for Imperials, various mods for Dunmer and Redguards, and your own mods for Khajiit, Argonians and Orcs, it's really starting to bug me how much my Bretons look like short off-brand Nords. So far the best I've come up with is Breton Apparel (looks weird on, say, Vivienne Onis or Belethor) and an edit of Wizard Hats that only distributes them to Breton mages. I'd love to find a nice dark ages/early medieval peasant clothing pack for them.

I racked my brain on this one: I can think of a ton of Breton-like armors (light and heavy) and maybe some super fancy dresses that could fit the aesthetic, but not really much in the way of commoner clothing.

I kiiiiind of feel like Skyrim appropriated the dark ages fantasy look a little, which doesn't help (they should really have some more furs and beadwork to set them apart from Bretons, imo.) Fashions of the Fourth Era certainly expands on Skyrim peasantry clothing (the hats feel especially medieval), someone could probably make it distribute only to Bretons??

Sorry, maybe someone else can comment/reblog with ideas.

Whumptober 2024 (day 1 to 5)

Yay, finally @whumptober's month is here ! I'm a bit late, but my brain fog won't lift so I hope this five first drabble with, as usual, Skyrim's cvf, will be ok :D

No. 1: RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK (search party)

The weight of the dragon had caused a great tremor and the ground opened up beneath its feet. The ground was swallowed up and the Dragonborn with it, leaving a gaping hole revealing the hidden depths of an ancient Dwemer ruin.

Kaidan rushed to the edge of the hole, screaming the Dragonborn's name as the dragon circled above them.

"We absolutely have to go get him, he's probably injured, or...", Lucien called out, his voice half-choked with anguish.

"I'll get the dragon's attention. Grab some ropes and go. Time is running out!", Taliesin shouted. (99)

No. 2: TRUST ISSUES

The Dragonborn watched Nebarra from across the campfire, the flames casting shadows over his moonstone helm. A pit settled in their stomach. Trust came hard, and with Nebarra, an Altmer mercenary who fought for the Dominion, it was harder still.What if Nebarra had sold them to the Thalmor in exchange for amnesty for his desertion from the army? The Dragonborn's chest tightened. Behind the visor of his helmet and beneath the layer of all his trauma, it was hard to imagine everything that could be going on in Nebarra's head.

"You don't trust me.", Nebarra finally said.

The Dragonborn swallowed. "Should I?" (105)

No. 3: SET UP FOR FAILURE (wongfully arrested)

His friends have warned him hat curiosity could prove perilous. Lucien barely had time to react when the guards grabbed him. Rough hands yanked his arms behind his back, twisting them painfully as shackles clanged around his wrists.

“I-I’m not a spy! Please, I was just... !”

“Save it for the Jarl, Imperial scum.”, one of the guards sneered, shoving him face-first into the dirt.

Lucien’s heart pounded, panic rising.

“This is a mistake!” He tried to struggle, but a heavy gauntlet slammed into his ribs, forcing a gasp from his lungs and tears from his eyes.

“Jarl Skald doesn't take kindly to Tullius’ dogs sniffing around.” (105)

No. 4: HALLUCINATIONS

The Dragonborn woke abruptly, heart pounding. They saw the others wide-eyed, in the dim light of the Dawnstar Inn. All were silent, but their haunted gazes spoke volumes. Ever since they had set foot in the Pale Hold, Vaermina had tormented their minds with nightmares, forcing them to stay awake for fear of what awaited them in their sleep.

Hours passed. Shadows crawled along the walls, whispering. The Dragonborn rubbed their eyes, but the crawling figures didn't stop. Auri trembled, eyes darting as if she saw something the others could not. Inigo flinched at unseen enemies.

Outside, the wind howled like laughter. (104)

No. 5: SUNBURN (healing salve)

Taliesin, his face red and blistered from hours of walking through the glistening glaciers, grimaced as Xelzaz surveyed the damage.

“It’s worse than I thought.”, Xelzaz muttered, reaching into his satchel for a greasy pot of salve.

Taliesin groaned, eyeing the thick concoction with obvious disgust.

“Does it have to be so… greasy?”

“Unless you want your face to peel, yes.”, Xelzaz replied, spreading delicately the salve over the Mer’s burned skin.Taliesin winced and grimaced, but didn’t protest further, letting the Argonian work.

“...I guess I’ll have to thank you for saving my handsome face, then.” (96)

Misc Altmer fashion headcanons cause the piss elves are on my mind

Makeup is divisive, some see it as an expression of artistic ability, while others see it as lying.

Defects are to be covered. For example, an Altmer who loses their eye in battle often chooses to cover their injury with their hair.

Considered very logical, as it covers up a negative physical trait (the lost eye) with a positive physical trait (one’s hair) (the Altmer would take extra care in the future to make sure their hair was well maintained.)

It’s a whole school of thought, canceling out undesired physical traits with desired ones.

No literally, there are mathematical equations.

Hygiene and grooming is considered important in Altmer society, however it is considered deeply shallow to waste time on the self in ways that could have been spent more productively. (The Altmer basically invent the “everything shower” in response to this, taking care of certain grooming needs for the week in one swoop.)

Altmer dress is typically very light and flowing, layers of whisper-thin gossamer fabrics worn over one another.

Hems are often decorated with incredibly ornate tiny rows of embroidery. The most painstaking pieces take years to complete and are passed down through generations.

ough in TPATD Miraak is half-Atmoran, half-Falmer. One person carrying and uniting the blood of two races that became enemies, that ultimately destroyed one another.

Jia is half-Nord, half-Imperial. One person carrying and uniting the blood of two races that are currently under an endless war, that are, too, basically destroying each other.

Miraak used to receive some weird looks from the Atmorans for his Snow Elf heritage, with his fellow dragon priests calling him names such as 'ghost' or 'paleface', because of the marble-white complexion he took after his Snelf mother.

Jia is quite frequently confronted with "aren't you a little short for a Nord?" by the Nords, and with "aren't you a little tall for an Imperial?" by the Imperials.

and yet, aren't they both living proof that before any hate, or any war, or any decimation of life, there was once love and unity? 🥺

One of my least favourite fantasy tropes is when the writers go "ok, here is a marginalised race that most people fear and are thought of as evil and will attack you on sight except that's actually wrong! We explore this in several meaningful ways throughout the text! Evilness is not innate!" And then they turn around and go "not this race though. This one is just evil."
