What’s TAZ?

Oh gosh, where to begin? The Adventure Zone is a tabletop RPG podcast by the McElroy family, whom you may or may not know from Monster Factory or My Brother, My Brother and Me. 

TAZ is widely beloved by many people, myself included, for making us both laugh so hard we cry and just straight up cry because of the emotions involved, and even if you’re not familiar DnD or used to listening to podcasts, I still think it’s worth checking out! I’d never played a tabletop game or listened to a plot-driven podcast before I checked out TAZ, and it’s become incredibly dear to my heart in the roughly 16 months since I started Balance.

Speaking of which, there are three main seasons of TAZ, each with a different story, characters, and setting:

Season 1: Balance. Described by Justin McElroy himself as a story of four idiots who played DnD so hard that they made themselves cry. Starts out as a very run of the mill campaign with novice players, and evolves into something genre-defying, hilarious, and heartwrenching.

Taako (pronounced “taco”) the wizard, Magnus Burnsides the fighter, and Merle Highchurch the cleric hunt down seven of the world’s most dangerous magical items, and hijinks, mistakes, and found family ensue.

Season 2: Amnesty. Switching to the Monster of the Week system this time, for a story set in a beautiful West Virginian tourist town within the radio quiet zone (if you like Gravity Falls, you’ll definitely vibe with this setting too). Amnesty has the unique distinction of being the TAZ arc that (thus far) has made me cry the most!

Aubrey Little, the aspiring stage magician with real magic powers, Ned Chicane, the sketchy tourist trap owner, and Duck Newton, the park ranger with a magical destiny, all hunt down dangerous abominations that appear in the scenic town of Kepler, protecting both their world and a second planet called Sylvain.

Season 3: Graduation. The currently ongoing campaign returns to DnD for a fantasy school story, set at an institution that teaches students how to be heroes, villains, henchpeople, or sidekicks. This one starts out lighthearted but quickly gets tense and emotional, and has some mystery elements that make for awesome fan theory fuel.

Sir Fitzroy Maplecourt, the magical barbarian, Argo Keene, the rogue water genasi with a mysterious past, and a nameless banished Firbolg all enroll as sidekicks in Hieronymous Wiggenstaff’s School for Heroism and Villainy, only to encounter far more fiends, secrets, questions of trust, and reanimated squirrel skeletons than they expect.

There are also several shorter campaigns and one-shots like Dust (a Wild West mystery), but I would recommend starting with one of the three main campaigns! You can really choose any of them to start with, but I’d recommend Graduation if you want to catch up while the show is ongoing, Balance if you want a really long story to binge (69 episodes, to be precise), and Amnesty (36 episodes) if you want something that’s completed if not quite as massive as Balance.
