like, I couldn’t put my finger on why all of the posting about it bothered me, but now, this makes perfect sense. said as a kinkster myself: again, again, again, again, it is an example of queer people who think they’re enlightened for having a good grade in kink magnifying another small (emphasis on this; usually 1-3 people) group of queer people who obviously have sexual repression issues and generalizing this as a problem with all “puriteens” or “tenderqueers” or whatever word they obviously stole from a subreddit for gay discourse. this isn’t some “official” kinktober post; this is a twitter account that was created within the last month. when you read the rules of this arcane kinktober post, it is obvious that this is run by people who are very ashamed by their own desires. as much as I like to yap on here about everything that annoys me, even I would see these rules/tweets/etc and pass on making commentary—because this is very obviously a personal issue that accidentally has tens of thousands of eyes on it now.
like, not saying that the mods of this kinktober are necessarily minors, but imagine yourself when you were new to your queer identity, and you had a lifetime worth of shame to unlearn. now imagine what your list of rules for a kinktober you ran would’ve looked like during this time. be honest with me, would it have required safewords and for the characters to remain inside of a certain sexual/gender orientation? yes, of course it would’ve!! because this is all behavior that is in line with baby’s first fandom!! my previous reblogs of this post are about how the show ITSELF is even baby’s first fandom!! if you’re in the arcane fandom yourself and you’re somehow surprised or upset about this, you are engaging with the text in the same way this fandom kinktober is, just in the opposite direction
yall are telling me that, the entire time, the whole kinktober without kink that yall were posting about…was specifically an ARCANE ship’s kinktober? expecting an arcane ship to have anything but a dogshit kinktober is like walking into your kitchen expecting anything but your fridge

looking into it more, there are people who are saying “one of them is a cop!” or “they do [X problematic fictionalized sex act] in the show!” but all of those Hot Netflix-Approved Lesbian Sex Tropes are a veneer over a show that is constantly afraid to have anything but an aesthetic identity and skirts away from a clear “moral” besides “it’s bad when some people are rich and some people are poor”. the show PRETENDS to be subversive and unique while appealing to broad tastes; why would you expect the fandom kinktober to reflect anything other than that?? like, “kinktober hold the kink”? arcane is like “class war hold the class”. there I’ve made a funny joke. like this post
yall are telling me that, the entire time, the whole kinktober without kink that yall were posting about…was specifically an ARCANE ship’s kinktober? expecting an arcane ship to have anything but a dogshit kinktober is like walking into your kitchen expecting anything but your fridge

Calling a technology "bad for the environment" is a politically vacuous framework. It makes invisible the ways classes of people intentionally develop tech in a resource-intensive way. It erases the fact that tech is controlled by PEOPLE who should be held accountable. Saying that anything is "bad for the environment" isn't useful framing. Throwing a napkin in the street is bad for the environment but negligible compared to driving a car or eating meat. Yet, the negligible act feels worse. The better framing is: is the resource cost worth the benefit provided?
I think the resources required to develop genAI and machine learning are worth the cost. BUT there's no reason for dozens of companies to build huge proprietary models or for aggressive data center expansion. AI CAN be developed sustainably. But a for-profit system doesn't incentivize this.
Some might argue that any use of AI is a waste of resources. This is disingenuous and ignores the active applications of AI in education, medicine, and admin. And even if it were frivolous, it's okay for societies to produce frivolous things as long as it's produced sustainably. Communist societies will still produce soda, stylish hats, and video games.
Even if you think AI is frivolous, it CAN be produced sustainably, but we live in a for profit system where big tech companies are using a ton of unnecessary resources in ways that hurt the public. But we know tech (not just AI) can be sustainable & energy efficient. Computing is one of the most energy efficient things humans do compared to how much we rely on it, and is only increasing in efficiency.
If you're critical of AI, framing it as uniquely bad for the environment isn't useful and isn't true. At the individual level, it's less wasteful than eating meat and slightly less energy intensive than watching Netflix. Some models can be run locally on your computer. Training can be energy intensive but is infrequent, and only needs to be done once per model.
Also, there are real harms in overstating AI energy use! Energy and utility companies are using overinflated AI energy numbers to justify a huge buildout of oil and gas.
If you're critical of AI, you should instead ask: What are we getting for the resources used? What outcome are we trying to get out of AI & tech development? Are all these resources necessary for the outcomes we seek? AI CAN be environmentally sustainable, but there are systems and people who want to foreclose this possibility. Headlines like "ChatGPT uses 10x more energy than Google search" (not even true), shift blame from institutional actors onto individuals, from profit-motives onto technology.

one hour left to determine (by democracy, of course) if he’s a cool dude or if he’s a dacryphilic pervert. as a reminder we’re cool if he gets off on it. my poetry is masturbation about all the bad things that happen to me. jerked off to worse. etc.

watching slop in the background (guy explaining all of the final destination movies) and instead of many of the characters having names, he uses less than creative monikers. including, in every movie, a character who is “hot [profession]” (teacher, cop, etc)—completely divorced from their intended sex appeal in the script btw. it’s just the character that this guy thinks is most attractive. and you would think I would be able to make a joke like “you’d think as an english major, I would be better than that” but he just mentioned being an english major too. so now I’m kinda just like . ok man fuck me I guess 🖕 job market’s bad rn for this degree

I do truly believe in the power of sexual liberation and, to use audre lorde’s metaphor, I think it bleeds into all aspects of your life like food coloring. that being said, some of yall kinksters post shit like “you know, if you think about it, BDSM heals my inner child because it’s essentially playing pretend ❤️☺️” and it just makes me roll my eyes and go “okay I know you think your kink star sign is rope bunny but some of us don’t need every element of our daily lives to be healing some inner child. some of us like to get our dicks hard”

well, it’s enough to get a grip on. and one of my exes commented on my ass one time and then I think I scared her out of it because I was so flabbergasted. *northernlion voice* we have to take what we can get in this life. sometimes your ass is just enough to get by, you never consider the guy with the worse ass. somebody always has it worse than you buster
poll that says “do I have a good ass” but it’s entirely based on vibes and I don’t show any pics
