This got me thinking about martial arts and the master/student relationship, and it made me think I wanted a term for master other than “master.” “Sinwo” is what came out of me when I was thinking of the words “sensei” and “sifu.” I decided to give it masculine and feminine forms as a nudge to the fact that the community of swordsmen is a pretty sexist one, as a way of underscoring the way things are for Maliya Pel.
