STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON

SUMMARY: A story about embracing your heavenly maternal inheritance and surrounding yourself with people on your side.

THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Game development, dramatic entrances, loyal coworkers, sweet coffee, poop liquor, walnut pies, drunk dancing, hidden cameras, kidnapping, gangsters, late night texting, broken tailbones, and lots of ass-kicking.

HOT TAKE: I wanted to love this show so much, and in a way I did--but there was also a heavy bucket of unfortunate gags that I feel the need to carry.

I adore Park Bo Young. I also adore Park Hyung Sik. They are masters of their craft and seem to give 100% no matter how big or small their role. That being said, I'm not sure if I really supported her character of push-over simplicity or his role as the somewhat-manipulative person of power/love interest. There's something about their enemies-to-lovers arc that left me with some nasty feelings throughout. The man put a tracker in her necklace in the third act, never told her, and then it was forgotten as if it was nothing big at all.

Besides the ML's questionable romance, there's an issue to be made of how the show deals with sexuality, gender identity, and representation. I am aware of the South Korean social opinion on gay culture, but this is 2017, fam. I suppose including these themes was bold enough, but the fact that sexual preference was such a major b-plot point meant that the writers and producers could have really made a nuanced attempt to dig being gay and trans out of the slapstick-comedy hole it so often finds itself in.

The show's mystery plots are paced well, if not a bit atonal for a silly romcom, so at least it's got that going for it.

Would I suggest someone spend the time with this show? Maybe? I watched it during a weekend while I was sick and if you just focus on Hyung Sik and Bo Young smiling at each other you might find it worthwhile.

Mini-review:

As a fan of both Jung Hae In and Jung So Min, I knew I couldn't miss this for anything in the world. And fortunately, it was a fun and endearing ride from beginning to end. There were so many times where I felt like this drama had perfected the 'childhood friends to lovers' trope, which I've always been very fond of. That's not to say it's perfect, though; while the last two episodes are very good, overall I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second one. I love my romcoms with a considerable splash of angst, but a lot of the dramatic storylines on here felt a tad too silly, at least in the way they were handled. Still, the cast pulls through any and all flaws with their spot-on acting and chemistry. Jung Hae In turns in a particularly incredibly performance, showcasing his diverse and nuanced range like never before (which is saying a lot, since I already considered him a supremely skilled actor). To sum up, Love Next Door has its issues, but it's more than lovely enough to get past them.

Curtain Call

The opening scene of this story captivated my attention. It was heart breaking to see families trying to leave the North and move to the South when the different nations decided to split a country in two. Korea was no longer a Japanese colony and now was taken by two opposing powers and split in two, breaking families, friendships too. Ja Keum Soon never forgot the husband and child she left behind in the North, and later on, her grandchild, Moon Seong. She find love in the South and had another son and three other grandchildren who she loved, but her hotel, overlooking the ocean that could bring her loved ones from the North was a reminder of that part of her life that they didn't know much about but were all aware of it.

The story starts when she is sick and Sang Cheol wants to find Moon Seong to bring him to the South and spend her last days with her. But Moon Seong's life hasn't been easy and to take care of his sick wife he is moving in the darkest circles and Sang Cheol decides that he is not the grandchild Ja Keum Soon needs right now, so he hires an actor to play the roles Moon Seong and an actress to play the role of his wife. . .

It is a sweet story about family and I like the ending of the story. People moving on and keeping those connections they formed during those last months of Ja Keum Soon's life. But it was slow and at times it felt repetitive and there were things that hung in the air. We don't know what happened to Moon Seong's wife surgery, for example. I think it could have been a shorter series. Still, the series was nice and I liked the characters and the dynamics between them. It tackles issues that I haven't seen in other series and that made it fresh and unique.

Mini-review:

I finally got the chance to watch this, and it didn't disappoint at all. I love me a good horror thriller, a genre that's very in rare in the world of k-dramas, and this one ticks all the boxes for me. Sure, it's not super scary or anything, but it does know how to be creepy as hell. And while it was the central mystery that kept me hooked from beginning to end, I also appreciated the way they used individual "cases" to build up the main plot, especially during the first half. On top of that, the show is superbly acted, with Kim Tae Ri being particularly excellent in a sort of dual role. But really, I don't think I have a single complaint. Revenant is truly that good, and I will certainly add it to my favorite dramas list.

P.S. There is a lot of triggering content throughout its twelve episodes, so be careful with that and make sure to check warnings.
