tfw you don't know if you don't like a book, or if you just really don't like the larger trend it's part of.

I deviated from my usual fare to read a contemporary novel that has the featured couple doing IVF, and it takes a huge toll on their marriage. The wife is desperate to have a baby, and after she does a risky financial thing for another round of IVF, her husband gets mad, goes out and gets drunk, and cheats on her (which he does not disclose at the time). They reconcile, but then he finds out he got the girl he cheated with pregnant. The rest of the novel centers around her forgiving him and deciding she's okay to raise the child her husband had with another woman (who gives up the baby willingly).

The thing is, whatever other critiques there might be, why does it seem like so many novels that focus on a child coming from cheating have it be the man who fathers the child and his long-suffering wife having to forgive him and come to terms with raising a child that is evidence of that infidelity in order for a happy ending to be had? Is it really that happy? Where are the reverse stories, where the FMC cheats and gets pregnant and her spouse has to deal with that? I can think of at least three fictional stories and one real-life one where that's the case. The only story I can think of where the reverse is true is a one-off episode in Call the Midwife.

I work at a CCRC, and have for the better part of the last 14 years. I have gotten used to residents passing. It is part of the deal working here. It is unavoidable.

But today, we lost one that seemed, untouchable. She was in her 100's still singing and playing piano every week.

It has been a very long time since a resident's death has made me cry, but this one... has me sitting in my office crying.

She was a legend. She has lived here since before I started.

She was a staple in this building, and her loss will truly be felt by everyone here.

I'm glad it's Friday at least. No one else is in the C-suite today, so no one can see my red puffy eyes.

like yeah. at certain ages... let shit go. im not defending the real immature shit. im not defending the karen you're picturing. i worked in retail i hate those people too. (once somebody got mad at me because she didn't like how our winter window decor was a snowman smoking a pipe. i wish i was joking).

but men at 57 will write books about how 17 year old girls are soooo sexy. they will invent worlds where women have to be naked for "armor reasons." they will write songs that treat women as objects. people rush to defend them. meanwhile a woman at 35 will be like "heartbreak is hard, actually" or "i feel betrayed by a friend" or "i am struggling with something emotionally." immediately people will say stuff like this woman is 35 by the way. by the way this woman is SO OLD to be experiencing this. BY THE WAY.

im 31, almost 32. the other day a poet was blasted online because at her "big age", she had written a poem about feeling unloved. top comment was "this woman is 29 by the way." this woman is too old to still be useful, by the way. she has to behave better . maybe if she was a good wife and mother she could stop existing loudly, and the story could continue on without her. this woman has served her purpose, by the way. she's so cringe, by the way. at 29 - so old! - she still hasn't figured out that her existence should be one of shame.
