Seeing people Ik know better falling into the practice of implying masculinity as suffering and the transition to femininity as the only route to healing is so. Ugh.

Like its proto-terf ideology to imply Masculinity as suffering/violent/wrong and Femininity as healing/good/correct. It's the foundation of treating bi identity as traitorous which is covered in Sharon Dale Stone's "Bisexual Women and the "Threat" To Lesbian Space: Or What If All The Lesbians Leave?" That lead to the same transphobia that caused Sandy Stone to lose her job with Olivia Records, that threatened her life, that harmed Nancy Jean Burkholder at the 1991 Michigan's Women's Musical Festival, continues to harm trans women to this day and trans men who are frequently left out or entirely forgotten about in these discussions just like nonbinary people who are forced into a binary.

Like Idk think for two seconds how that implication paints trans mascs because we're choosing the identity that is being described as suffering, freakish and wrong rather than remaining feminine which is described as liberating and good. Its one thing to celebrate femininity and another to re-enforce the very narrative that harms all trans, gnc and nonbinary people.

re: why is radblr ‘like that’?

so recently i’ve been seeing some discourse among bisexual users in/orbiting the radblr space regarding its profoundly biphobic (and homophobic) culture. why is radblr hostile to bisexual women? why are lesbians and bisexual women constantly at odds? is this feud manufactured by outside influence? or is it inherent to the space? @watermelinoe wrote a great nuanced response to an anon who attempted to antagonize lesbian users. i agree with everything that was said, but i don’t think placing the fault on black-pill infiltrators and politically unserious edgy teenagers is the full story. this post is mostly in addition to that reply, but i figured i should create a separate post for my lengthy thoughts. 

for context: i’ve been working on a detailed post about the history and politics of the lesbian feminist movement (i.e. the political lesbian branch of feminism), as it is apparent to me that most of radblr is uninitiated due to how frequently its users conflate radical feminist principles and lesbian feminist principles. i still might finish that post at some point in the future, but i thought i should put some of the information i’ve come across while researching for that post out there now since it's become relevant.

one of the readings i found to be crucial in understanding how the culture of radblr enables biphobia (and lesbophobia) is sharon dale stone’s “bisexual women and the ‘threat’ to lesbian spaces: or what if all the lesbians leave?” (x) the title is inflammatory, but i highly recommend giving her paper a read. stone authored it in 1996 as a reflection on the culture of the canadian lesbian/cultural feminist spaces she was an active member of in the 1970s-1980s and provides a truly fascinating look into a niche community that i consider to be a spiritual predecessor of radblr.

the paper is quite dated in many regards. the most obvious being stone’s use of ‘lesbian’ to mean both ‘homosexual female’ (which is the only and rightly so accepted meaning of the word today in radblr) and the political ‘lesbian’ identity, of which the philosophy for is outlined as follows:

it was entirely possible to be a true female homosexual, or female bisexual, or even female heterosexual and be a ‘political lesbian’ and active member of communities like stone’s house on jarvis street. stone says that those voicing opposition to lesbianism as a choice were the minority, but i think this was largely the case because ‘lesbianism’ meant different things to different groups and organizations of cultural/lesbian feminists at that time. the reason i am reluctant to dismiss lesbian involvement in these spaces is because they were mostly born of lesbian (and bisexual) exclusion from other more mainstream feminist spaces and organizations by homophobic heterosexual feminists, as well as the marginalization lesbian (and bisexual) women in the gay liberation movement experienced due to lack support against misogyny by male counterparts. i am also reluctant to dismiss straight women’s involvement in these spaces because even into the late 1980s, lesbianism was conceptualized by many cultural/lesbian feminists as not needing a sexual component at all; all that was required from women to live a ‘lesbian’ lifestyle was prioritizing closeness and connections with other women and eschewing relationships with men (akin to radblr's idea of practicing 'micro-separatism' in one's day-to-day life in lieu of not being able to move to a women's land full-time). from my understanding, 'lesbianism' and 'female homosexuality' were not thought of as synonymous, which is why 'lesbianism' was considered a voluntary political philosophy, even by many female homosexual feminists.

all that said, stone’s descriptions of the jarvis house culture are very reminiscent of radblr culture (down to the usage of slang terminology like ‘gomer’ for men, the radblr equivalent being ‘nigel’ and ‘jakey’). this is because radblr culture is heavily inspired by cultural/lesbian feminist values, not radical feminist values. while both schools of feminism share similarities, lesbian/cultural feminism deviates significantly in its emphasis of separatism as the solution to the male supremacy and patriarchy present in all levels of society. meanwhile, radical feminism calls for a fundamental restructuring of society to eliminate women's oppression. radical feminism was never about female separatism. radblr culture is biphobic because female separatism 'as the solution to female oppression' will always require a politicization and objectification of female sexuality.

i normally wouldn't cite wikipedia articles as sources, but this distinction is outlined on the very top of the entries for radical feminism and lesbian/cultural feminism:

as an aside, this is why i find it very funny when radblr users try to 'kick out' other radblr users from the radical feminist club, because the beliefs these users are being kicked out for not holding (i.e. separatism as the means to female liberation), are conclusively NOT radical feminist beliefs. they are lesbian/cultural feminist beliefs!

the script of political lesbianism that radblr holds is "non-lesbian who believes inaccurately adopting the lesbian label is feminist action, therefore giving credence to the homophobic notion that lesbianism is an active, politicized identification choice, or born out of experiencing trauma from men, instead of a politically neutral, natural sexuality that some women experience." and yes, that is a large and significant aspect of why political lesbianism is harmful (and uniquely so to lesbians). but it also goes deeper than that. in truth, this definition is only surface-level. all women in feminist spaces can be guilty of holding and perpetuating polilez beliefs, and this rhetoric dehumanizes ALL women. through the political lesbian perspective, women's capacity for feminist action is made and broken by her sexual behavior - namely, her exclusion or inclusion of males from her sexual behavior - and by extension, her reproductive decisions (i.e. remaining childfree or birthing children 'for a man.') this is where the core harm of radblr's covert political lesbian rhetoric lies.

saying or implying that:

motherhood is compliance to patriarchy

engaging in relations with men is compliance to patriarchy

bisexual women have a moral imperative to only date women in order to defy patriarchy, and if they reject this, they are in kahoots with the patriarchy

patriarchy is defined by "sexual access" to women

lesbians are intrinsically 'better' feminists than non-lesbians

lesbians are inherently feminist, and choosing to not be living aspirational figures is a betrayal to womankind

patriarchy can be ended through female separatism

female sexual behavior can never be predatory or result in meaningful harm to others

men are fundamentally incapable of changing

and any other type of rhetoric that posits women's physical bodies as the territory for a gender war that can be "preserved" or "ceded" to the "enemy" in accordance to her sexual behavior (including reproductive choices, irrespective of her individual sexuality) ✅️ is political lesbian rhetoric. put radblr posts to the test; a good amount of them will contain or imply at least 1 of the above assertions. during a cursory search through recent/popular radblr posts, i came across several examples of this rhetoric:

i cropped out the usernames from these posts because my intention isn’t to single out any particular users for this behavior; these posts (and similar) have many notes consisting mostly of positive feedback and support, so its safe to say that these beliefs are widely held in the radblr space. the op’s are just the ones to put pen to paper so to speak. i don’t believe some of these sentiments are harmful or bad on their own either. i actually agree with some of them, especially the first one; although note its rhetorical similarity with this section of stone's paper:

however, in aggregate (and especially in addition to commonly held stereotypes about bisexual women and lesbian women that predate radblr), they create a harmful culture that covertly encourages women to objectify their and others' sexualities for political ends, which is never going to be a good or productive thing.

choice feminists and neo-liberals have run the phrase "don't rob women of their agency" into the ground to cheaply deny the power of gendered socialization and gendered consumerism, as they are quite allegiant to these systems for a variety of reasons. so i understand the instinct from radblr to not give it any credence, but handwaving women's (including feminist-minded women's) desire for children and/or romantic relationships with men as products of solely or even primarily patriarchal brainwashing that can be undone through enough cultural/lesbian feminist re-education, which is what many radblr users espouse, is just as cheap. 

for this reason, radblr is hostile to bisexual women, many of whom reject female separatism as the only means to female liberation and don't want to objectify their sexuality in service to this political goal. for this reason, bisexual women will be known as "traitors" and "fairweather." however, just as many bisexual female users believe the opposite and participate in disseminating political lesbian rhetoric (as do heterosexual and gay users). similarly, this is why radblr is toxic to lesbians who have deep friendships with men, who want to be mothers, who practice religion or don't believe in female separatism; their 'legitimacy' as lesbians is questioned, as there is the 'positive' stereotype (and key insinuation of lesbian feminism) that lesbians are naturally inclined towards feminism; and they are often accused of secretly being bisexual because these lifestyle preferences are viewed as in alignment with the patriarchy and therefore oppositional to the cultural/lesbian feminist perspective that reigns supreme in the space. radblr will not stop being biphobic (and lesbophobic) until it is free of cultural/lesbian feminist influence.

see the reason bisexual women existed within the lesbian community in the 70s was because it was the era of political lesbianism…hence it was thought that any woman could choose to be a lesbian as a means to escape patriarchy. in this way it erased both lesbian and bisexual identity. and also, it meant straight women, too, could “choose to be lesbian”, yet i see no one attempting to create a “straight lesbian” label based off of that history…hm….

many bisexual women have stepped forward to talk about how awful their experiences within the political lesbian sphere were because they were expected to just “become lesbian” and give up their attraction to men…then afterward, they had their involvement denied entirely. but people don’t listen.

why on earth would you want to return to that and justify the “bi lesbian” label using that history? we can acknowledge the importance bisexual women had in forming lesbian culture and vice versa, but attempting to justify the “bi lesbian” label only serves in erasing those women’s bisexuality and lesbian identity yet again

- Dale was a love sick puppy when he met you at liquor store were you where working, you were not like any kind of person he met before in his small town, you were unique and he loved the chase, always the sarcastic or sassy remarks you gave him while ringing up his beer or Liquor.

-After a couple more visits with his brother you finally gave him your number, he was cheering and talking about you for hours, and yes Tyler did slap him a few times because he couldn't stop talking about you.

-He and you started talking for hours before he went to bed, it was relaxing for both of you, you didn't mind that his family had history it made you more interested about his Ma and his two brothers.

-Dale and you started hanging out at your house he was super cute, having his arm around you're shoulder while watching some cheeky horror film that made you jump

- of course, he had to tease you about that witch you punch him in the arm for. The night ended with you curled in his lap an empty popcorn bag and some candy wrappers, Dale kept himself closed off even when everyone saw was a jokester trouble maker, he had fears too.

- Dale was a big spoon for sure but sometimes he wanted to just cuddle into you after a long day and fall asleep to you're heart beat.

- when you Met Ma for the first time it was very intimidating beacuse you knew she was a strong woman and wanted what best for her son, but She adored you when you started fitting in messing with Jay and talking, about birds with him or hanging out around the yard cooking with her or helping with the roof. She told you she liked you and Dale together she thought you balance his chaotic nature out.

- PDA was a thing you and Dale did in public he wanted everyone to know that he was your's.

- some nights Dale would take you on the roof of the shack, after a long day of school, or you working and just sit there counting the stars with a joint in your hand than later falling asleep under the blanket.

- Let's just say this Dale is very overprotective, he was taught to treat someone with respect so when someone tries to flirt with you it does not make Dale happy, but you would normally have to calm him down, or clean up his wounds.

- some nights when Bear has been gone for weeks, and nothing has hit the fan, you and the holt family would watch movies and Sharon would kinda giggle at the horror movies and all of you would kinda look at her like she crazy.

- okay hear me out When both of you were stone you had gave Dale a stick and poke and he didn't know it was a penis witch cracked both of you up.

my favorite thing in the world to do is assign music to characters. and by assign i mean figure out their fav bands. fav songs, fav albums, fav musicians … their listening habits, their opinions in music. are they a music snob? do they not really care? do they listen more during the day, while working, or while they’re chilling at night? what are their unpopular music opinions? genres/decades they fancy? there’s so much you can do here and so much character depth you can add and uncover.

sometimes i just. lob artists/bands at characters to figure out what they’d think. grow their music taste and opinions yk. i think about the holts from adf quite often, it’s just fun to see the differences between three brothers and even their parents and how music is passed down vs how some go against the grain. dale might love the smashing pumpkins and tyler might hate them. complain about billy corgan’s voice, cross his arms and think about how much he hates this and how much he’d rather hear something like what’s the story morning glory (oasis). but not wonderwall! no, that’s beneath him, he may tolerate it but he doesn’t love it and resents the idea of it being assigned his favorite song just because he likes oasis. he doesn’t understand dale’s interest in weird shit like supertramp but can silently appreciate the rolling stones even if he finds it appalling that their album cover is a guy’s bulge. tyler can appreciate 70s but he just doesn’t…love it. too many long intros, not enough singing - i think tyler does enjoy hearing someone’s voice, so all that rock n roll guitar solo shit doesnt really fly with him. i know he’d just die if he ever heard dale play shine on you crazy diamond, he’d be like wtf is this? no turn it off i want to hear some real music. and dale’s like bro, this IS real music. this is literally pink floyd. and tyler’s all, i don’t give a shit change it. and dale’s like fine whatever. then tyler is like no, i don’t wanna listen to david bowie, just put it on some 90s or even some good 70s stuff, i just don’t wanna hear those weird solos. so funny to me.

and dale! i don’t see dale being into a whole lot of pink floyd - maybe just the popular stuff, esp the wish you were here album. if he dove into it more i think he’d enjoy it (especially the wall) but just hasn’t really given pf a big ole chance yet. just into weird shit, just music made for that certain demographic that people like tyler can’t and maybe never will understand. dale’s experimental and nods off to reggae, bob marley and (by extension) bunny wailer, and alton ellis. watches old docs on woodstock and the doors and jimi hendrix. probs got into stevie ray vaughan through his cover of hendrix’s “little wing,” he can just really appreciate a good fuckin’ guitarist. i think he’s a little all over the place, kinda the guy that listens to everything w other people’s influence, picking up on new songs along the way, kind of a magnet for new music. he loves his mom’s taste in music and they listen to some similar stuff. not sure yet if dale got sharon into reggae or if it’s the other way around. either way i feel like reggae is important to dale, he enjoys uplifting music and doesn’t really fuck with depressing shit, maybe more mellow stuff here and there but nothing like what jay would ever listen to. some of it is just too dark for him. so i do think he has a bit of a line despite picking up so much from others. doesn’t mean he dislikes grunge, he just doesn’t really enjoy songs like black or polly or even jeremy. tyler’s similar, not that he hates grunge or anything but if he even got a glimpse of nirvana’s “rape me” he’d be super turned off.

surprisingly i can see all three listening to pearl jam, kinda something that keeps the whole fam together. jay obviously enjoys the ten album, jeremy and black and once… thinks that whole album is a masterpiece. tyler likes yellow ledbetter and some other stuff off of vs, elderly woman and daughter… and dale i think also likes vs, def yield and maybe even some vitalogy ? better man and faithful, given to fly? yeahhhh. jay’s a full grunge fan, likes that crusty 90s, sonic youth and pixies and nirvana.. maybe a little old country thrown in from his dad. could definitely see jay being a deadhead if he’d ever been able to keep up with a band like that and wasn’t stuck to the confines of two rock. just enjoys jamming to music, electric guitar vibes all around. when it comes to blur vs oasis jay is probably gonna choose blur, much to his brother’s chagrin. not that he’d admit that, he’d probs say something like “i like em both..” just nodding along when tyler’s music snobbery comes up. unlike dale he doesn’t really mind that tyler doesn’t open his mind to different music. meanwhile i bet it annoys dale that tyler won’t even give songs a chance just because of the title. also have mentioned this in the past but jay does like a lot of girl singers, mazzy star and hole and sonic youth,, maybe even the cranberries ? can see “linger” being a guilty pleasure song of his. also he’d def enjoy the smashing pumpkins (which i am listening to rn hence why i’m bringing it up lol) so he and dale have that in common i imagine. shockingly enough i think jay might also weirdly be into like, 60s to mid-70s bob dylan? none of that christian shit he got into later in life but definitely simple twist of fate and like a rolling stone… that whole highway 61 album. maybe is possibly obsessed with that black and white bob dylan aesthetic, firing back at reporters and smoking cigarettes in every vid and being up on stage all by himself, just a guitar and harmonica. black shades and everything… and no i’m NOT just saying this because i’m also obsessed with bob dylan but jay seems the type what can i say.

so, the gist? dale is weird experimental mostly 70s/some 60s shit, tyler is 90s alt rock and jay is moreso 90s grunge and rock and shoegaze. can’t see any of them being much into 80s, maybe jay could get into the cure with some time but as of now i can’t see him being into it yet. bet dale could appreciate those synth solos that were so popular. maybe sharon listens to a bit of 80s… not too sure yet i’d have to see. i mean thats probs the era jay grew up in so? who knows. but yeah, dale is into bob marley and tyler oasis and jay nirvana, their tastes can obviously overlap and it’d be hilarious to see what they’d do with a joint playlist between all three of them and how they’d react to each others songs, may write that someday if the time is right.

why did i write this? because i needed to expel all of these jumbled music thoughts in my head and these three are the easiest to do that with. this may not be canon to anyone else in the adf fandom (btw this is not even my fandom but i’m here hi) but it makes sense in my head and i’m sticking with it. i may go deeper someday if anyone is interested or if inspiration strikes again so, we shall see. but yeah here hands you this essay

So guess what I'm having for dinner? Welcome back to the book cast, my platform for sharing short fiction and updates on life as a self published author of romantic fiction that centers black love and relationships. It's the weekend. I don't have a book to write. My editor is rejoicing. I I see it. I see it. I I'm picturing it in my mind, and I am all about the books. So we will talk about my reading challenge and what I have been putting into my face. I'll finish today's episode with part 3 of the photograph, which is my short run serial that I wrote specifically for the podcast because I just had not shared enough short fiction lately.

Today is Saturday, June 8th. It is 9:55 AM. Whoo. I'm way behind y'all. It's sunny and 65 degrees today in the AAT l. I have a mic and I am ready to dig in, but first, join me for some coffee. It took me so long to get up and running today that my coffee is lukewarm, and I'm sad about it. I like it hot.

We begin as always with the book report because I am a book head. I have read 89 books of my challenge to read 150 books this year, putting me 24 books ahead on my Goodreads challenge. The more I read, the further ahead I am. How how is that happening? Should I increase my goal or just be really ridiculous with it? Let me know in the comments. I had a very good reading week, so let's get into it. This week, I read star crossed and enemies to lovers romance by Shay Sanders. This was absolutely slap your nearest relative. Delicious.

Fantastic. So well done. I'm a Shea Sanders fan. It is cemented in the pantheon. She did such a good job with this. I highlight highlighted so much in this book. I really tried not to spoil things, but, like, she just has a way with, like, a twist of phrase. She is very sassy and sarcastic, but, like, also able to to bring out, like, emotion and, like, just, like, talk about what's actually happening between these two characters.

And her steamy scenes aren't bad either. Big fan. Love that. I also listened to truth be told, Rogue Justice number 2 by Kendra Elliott. Kendra is another one of those thriller authors that has, like, 99 books out in Kindle Unlimited, so I can read and listen with my subscription. And I often will just throw on something to, like, listen to just because. So this was a just because listen. I also got an audio arc of Do What Godmother Says by Ellis Stratton, who is my author bae.

I absolutely love her. You also know her as Shelley Ellis and Shelley Stratton. Listen. If you don't read Shelley, I need you to get your life together immediately, like, right now because sis is on the way up, and you you you you wanna climb on this train, this rocket ship as it's ascending. Do what Gomother says is I think it's called a gothic thriller? Gothic? It's a gothic something, it's dual time period which is my fave, absolutely love it. There's a little bit I feel like there's a little bit of Shelley Ellis in Ellis Stratton. Just just the way that she writes a relationship in a book, it's very reminiscent. But this book is heavily, heavily a mystery, a thriller.

There's, like, a lot going on with, like, some spooky characters and some people that, like, make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and I'd be like, I knew. I knew it. I knew it. But then, like, I send her a DM, and she was doesn't tell me anything, and she makes me find out for myself. It's just not fair. It's not it's not like, being friends with an author should mean that you get to know the twist before you have to read the twist, but she doesn't play fair. I also read Just Like Her, a queer romance by Fiona Zedd. This finally came out.

I know she's been working on it for a minute. Congratulations, Fiona. And then, I read bitter and sweet by Rhonda McKnight, which was absolutely fantastic. Really, really well done. I can't remember if I had that on my list last week. I just I don't I don't know. The weeks are all running together, but, really, really enjoyed that. That comes out on Tuesday.

Also, Do What Good Mother Says comes out on Tuesday. You wanna grab both of those. They are both excellent. I don't have anything officially on my reading list, but I do know I have at least one ARC for June 11th that I need to read. It's not likely to come out in audio, so I really need to get it together. I'll probably get on it, like, Sunday afternoon. It's a romance, and I don't think it's a long one. And I don't typically read romance by white authors, but Laurie Foster is a fave.

I also love Ronnie Lauren. So I saw that she had a new book coming out. I've loved her since getting rowdy came out, like, 7000000 years ago. Love me some Laurie Foster, so I'm gonna snatch that one up. I have a bunch of stuff in Kindle Unlimited that I wanna read or clear, ala Brigitte Bianca's KU reader release challenge. I have, uncovering her dreams by Rayshawn, Come Ride With Me by AC author, What If I Love You by Yvonne Marie. I have a couple of few Nia Forester backlist titles. I'm I'm on a mission to read all of Nia Forester's work, and so I'd wanna get a few more of those down.

I just love her writing. Just delicious. Like, Nia Forester and Tasha l Harrison, if I don't bring them up every other episode, something is wrong. Please send when they send the police to your house because they think something's wrong, if I don't mention Nia Forester or Tasha l Harrison, send the police. That's what I'm saying. The stones we cast by Chelsea Marie, back down memory lane by LaMarts Brown. I've gotta gotta gotta read more black male authors, specifically more black male indie authors, so I gotta get into it and legal seduction by my good good friend Sharon c Cooper. Lots to dig through, plus I have some upcoming arcs I need to get read.

First up is What You Leave Behind by Wanda Morris. I'm very, very excited about this. I might wait for audio on that one. That one's coming up, June 18th. So, I don't know if I can I don't know if I can wait? I also have a dream in the dark, wrongful conviction novel number 2 by Robert Justice coming up. I'm very excited about that one also, and, I'm just saying I know Robert listens to the podcast, and sometimes I know a book is just gonna be absolutely awesome in audio. And so I will wait for audio to come out so I can listen to it, but I get an ARC specifically so I can read it early because I'm impatient. And so now I'm in this thing where do I wanna read it on the page early because that helps the author, or do I wanna wait for it on audio because that helps me? You know, it's it's it's a struggle.

It's a struggle. That one's coming out in July. I'm very excited about it. I'm really, really excited for Robert Justice. I'm also wanna thank him that he read one of my books, and I so do cherish my, male readers because I I write specifically for 2 black women, but I do have some male readers that really dig me, and I so appreciate your good words about my books. So, thank you so much, and, keep them coming. This week, I put down Secret Keeper of Main Street by Tricia r Thomas. This book just didn't hit me.

It just didn't love love Tricia. I just I couldn't finish it. Sometimes I skip through till the end, because I feel bad about putting down a book. I just I got to about 30%, and I just was not interested in finishing. I think this book has some pretty good reviews, and I just wasn't interested in bringing it down, so I just went ahead and put it down. I don't know if it's a mood thing or the way the book is written or if it would have been better on the page versus audio. I just I lost interest. I didn't wanna pick it back up.

Often, this is a pacing issue. If it doesn't snap, I just I can't I can't stay engaged. I blame my short span of attention. On appearances, reminder that I'll be celebrating Danielle Allen's release cover girl summer in Petersburg, Virginia. She'll be at Resist Booksellers. I will be there to support. Like rush, but no rush. You know what I'm saying? And then I'll be heads down and making corrections to my file in Vellum and getting my girl ready for her close-up. I wanna be done with this novel, like, have it put together and up for a private sale by the time I hug Danielle's at Resist. So fingers crossed, I can get I can get that. As I mentioned, ARCs are out. The initial reception is good. I real I really, really try not to be precious about the words. So I don't stalk my reviews, and I ask that people not tag me in them if they can help it, send egregious errors and concerns to my email so I can address them before publication, but otherwise, enjoy and warn the others.

It's good or it's not. I mean, it's it's done. You know what I'm saying? Reviews are for readers, so I hope the readers like what they see and decide to read or not read the book based on honest opinions. I'm I am of the I said what I said variety. So if it's not something that popped up in my group chat or from my editor, it is not likely to change shoulder shrug. If you haven't read Beach Thing or Elysium, do not let that stop you from snatching up this novel. I did add a bit in the front matter on some previously on Black Diamond tip, so you can catch up without having to read both books because this book will spoil the first two. I have been working on my front matter and my back matter, so the book is ready to go once edits are complete.

And this fall, I'm about to go through the process of writing book 15, and I'm a take you all along. I don't even care if you want to go. We going. Get in the car. Sunday is our first check-in for the summer writing challenge. I'm writing I'm running over at the fiction archive that I own and operate. I hope the writers are getting in good words this week and are ready to chat it up about their summer of writing. Again, this is an off shoot of the 1,000 words of summer challenge, which is a 2 week challenge to write 1,000 words a day.

Our challenge will span June July, and it would be hard to maintain that for 2 months, so our parameters are very loose. The idea is to jump into summer with words and gear up for our most popular challenge, awesome August. So I'm looking forward to writing for fun, writing just because, writing to write, writing to get these thoughts out of my head, and really just, like, building that habit and getting some good ideas flowing. Speaking of writing, it is time for part 3 of the photograph. A little ditty I came up with because it had been too long since I shared fiction on the podcast. It's not lost on me that as a writer of kissing novels, my opportunity to break from the right publish stress about how much I sold rhythm manifests in material that is decidedly not romantic. Anyone that tells you that writing romance is easy as lying. Lying through their teeth.

It's much easier for me to write these little mystery thriller trysts, and I admit they don't go deep, they're not intricate. I will literally I sit down, I read what I wrote before. I write the next section. I edit it a little bit. I record it. Like, it's, like, not deep because if I start too early, I will start stressing about it, and then we have, like, a 67,000 word novel that I have read on the podcast. And, frankly, 67,000 words is something I need to sell. You know what I'm saying? I have decided, though.

I knew I had to confront Robin, but I couldn't just barge into her office and demand answers. Considering that someone found my email address and sent me a menacing note, the possibility that our offices and her home might be bugged was high. We needed to be careful. I suggested we meet at a quiet out of the way park where we could talk freely without fear of being overheard. Robin agreed and we found ourselves sitting on a secluded bench far from prying eyes or ears. Robin, I need to ask you something and I want need you to be honest with me, I said, looking her straight in the eye. What really happened to Damon? She stiffened, her fingers clenching in her lap. I told you he's not part of our lives anymore.

DL White [00:20:28]:

Why are you so interested in him all of a sudden? Because I found something and I started asking questions. I pulled up my phone showing her the photo that had been haunting my dreams followed by a screenshot of the threatening text message. Someone doesn't want me looking into Damon's disappearance. I know you know why. Robin's eyes widened as she read the message, and for a moment, I thought she might bolt, but then she sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. There's a lot that I haven't told you, Jada. There's so much, but I haven't been going on dates. I furrowed my brow, confused.

DL White [00:21:06]:

What do you mean you haven't been going on dates? I've been meeting with someone who claims to have information about Damon, she admitted, about what happened to him, his disappearance, and who might be responsible. My heart began to race. Who is this person? I don't know him. His name is Liam. He used to work with Damon back when he was involved in some less than legal activities. Drugs mostly, Robin explained, her voice trembling slightly. It was all stuff he was involved in before we met. He tried to leave to go straight, live a normal life, but you know you can never really leave that life especially if they have something on you.

DL White [00:21:45]:

Liam reached out to me about a year ago telling me he had important information about Damon, but it's taken this long to get him to meet me and relay anything I could work with. I leaned forward, my mind reeling. So what has he told you? Robin took a deep breath. He said years ago Damon was involved with a man named Donovan, a drug dealer, of course. Liam said that Damon had crossed Donovan somehow and that Damon's disappearance was likely due to him. He had it inside track, and he was sending me information as he could get it. Isn't that enough to go to the police? Your husband has been missing, Robin. I did, Robin said, her eyes filling with tears.

DL White [00:22:28]:

I did go to them, but they weren't interested. They know that name from back in the day. They're probably happy to not have to deal with a low level drug dealer. They told me that it wasn't illegal for him to leave his family. They even suggested that photo of him being tortured might be a deep fake meant to throw me off so he could start a new life somewhere else. I reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gently. But you don't believe that, do you? No, Robin whispered, shaking her head. I think someone killed him, and I think they're still out there watching me making sure I don't talk.

DL White [00:23:02]:

I felt a chill run down my spine. Robin, this is serious. If what Liam is saying is true then you could be in real danger and what about your kids? Why are you even still here? Robin's face crumpled and she let out a sob. I know. I've been so afraid to tell anyone. I can barely keep us above water. I don't have money to move them where Donovan can't watch us. I can't let anything happen to them, Jada.

DL White [00:23:26]:

They're all I have left of Daemon. I pulled her into a hug, feeling the weight of her pain and fear. We'll figure this out, Robin, together. She pulled back, wiping her eyes. How? Where do we even start? I thought for a moment, my mind racing. We'll start with Donovan. If he's as dangerous as Liam says, then he's our best lead. I'll see what I can find out about him.

DL White [00:23:52]:

Maybe I can track him down. In the age of the Internet, it's really hard to hide. Robin nodded, a flicker of hope in her eyes. And I'll keep meeting with Liam to see if he has any information that can help us. We have to be careful, I warned her. Someone knows I've been snooping. There's no telling what Donovan might do or have done. I know, Robin said, her jaw tight.

DL White [00:24:16]:

I can't go one more day not knowing the truth. I need to know and I need justice for Damon, for my kids. I cannot let his tillers go free. I nodded feeling a surge of admiration for her strength and courage. We'll get them, Robin. We need to make sure they pay for what they did to Damon. We just have to get enough information that the case looks good to the police. We left the part separately going in opposite directions, couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched, Every car that passed me on the street, every set of headlights in my rearview mirror seemed to hold some hidden threat.

DL White [00:24:52]:

I pushed down that fear and focused on the task at hand. I had inserted myself into something way bigger than I thought it would be, and I had now tethered myself to Robin, to her kids. I was in just as much a danger as she was, and the only way out was to find the truth about what happened to Damon. I wouldn't rest until we found a way to bring his killers to justice no matter the cost. That'll do it. Thank you for joining me for part 3 of the photograph. I think it's getting interesting, and we will see how I managed to wrap this up in one episode. Ok so i came across an actual former radfem who complained that most radfems groom each other into becoming lesbians… and i have to agree. Im bi and if i had a radfem blog id have to constantly defend and tak about that part of my sexuality to other feminists because theres a huge amount of radfems who blame women who date men for anything that happens to them. Ive def felt pressure to ignore or hide my sexuality…. And ive seen there’s young hetero girls that like radfem beliefs who are told theyll probably be murdered or raped and it’s their fault for going around the men we warned you about if it does happen. Anyways you probably know that because I’ve certainly seen it around and its a very popular sentiment. Like when thatfemalecharacterthatyouhate said het women were weak links. Fucked up. Caused a huge shitstorm lol my point is theres just a huge amount of radfems trying to control other women’s bodies and sexualities… and that is not very feminast~

Outside of personal experiences of gender dysphoria, one of the major factors pushing the rise of trans people is social contagion. Teens (and even adults) have a friend who comes out as trans, then another friend, then another, and then they come out as trans, too. Or they find themselves in communities with a fair number of trans people, get told how evil "cis" people are, how great it is to be trans, are fed some misogyny/etc about what dysphoria is, then they identify as trans, too. They will go so far as to actually start hormones or have surgeries.

You have to be living on another planet if you don't believe that there are at least a handful teen girls and women on or around radfem spaces that have been groomed into falsely calling themselves "lesbians" the same way.

For anyone that doesn't believe me, I refer you back to the "lesbian masterdoc."

This also isn't a new phenomenon.

This Twitter user posted a full essay by Sharon Dale Stone entitled, "Bisexual Women and the "Threat" to Lesbian Space" written in 1996, and she discusses exactly how biphobic lesbians were, the desperation to call bisexual women lesbians, and the culture that created political lesbianism. The term "political lesbianism" has been rightfully outed as homophobic, but we've seen the push to encourage bisexual women to label themselves "febfems" otherwise we're all "dick worshippers." We've seen plenty of the "lesbians are superior feminists because they aren't attracted to men and are only attracted to women" tiering of women.

This space says it's "radfem," but it's just "lesbian separatist feminism," where the point isn't women's liberation, but merely "let's make lesbian spaces where lesbians can pretend that other women who aren't lesbians are just celibate lesbians and then everything will be fine because we can pretend men don't exist." And then plenty of women believe that that's feminism, and it just... isn't.

Pure separatism is anti-feminist because it simply does not liberate women. There will always be women who value relationships with men. Romantic, familial, friendship-based. Actual liberation means that women can make full choices freely and, no matter what, won't face misogyny. True equity and equality. Separatism as prioritising women to support women and not centre men is good and should be practiced. Separatism as creating women-only spaces for healing purposes is good, too. Creating a women-only land like Themyscira and nothing else wouldn't give liberation, it would make a women-only country and that is literally it.

Sexuality being as moralised as it is, where you're taught either overtly or subtly that relationships with women mean good feminist vs relationships with men mean handmaiden doesn't encourage women to explore our sexualities naturally or fall in love or teach them to create high boundaries that they can enforce, it encourages women to fetishise lesbians and hate straight women, and then hate bisexual women the most because sexuality and relationships are reduced to "choice." 

The "superior" lesbian can do as she pleases as a feminist. The "good straight" feminist has to make a choice to be celibate. The "good bisexual" feminist has to only partner with other women and hate the bisexuals who aren't partnered with women or who don't loudly proclaim that they’re one of the “good bisexuals.” 

This obsession with “relationships/desires for relationships = feminism” is just as anti-feminist, because it always boils down to victim-blaming and ignoring reality, whether “feminists” realise it or not. 

After all, if women’s liberation is reduced to “stop dating men and you’ll basically be fine,” then that reframes domestic violence against women as the woman’s fault. It comes down to, “You know how bad men are, so if you’re abused, then you did it to yourself.” The only answer that’s given to global male violence is “teach women to separate from males” because that’s the childish, easy answer, instead of the difficult truth that we have to work towards a real cultural shift. “I told that woman over there to stay away from men, she didn’t, so it’s her fault!” is easy, victim-blaming “activism,” unlike the long, hard slog that’s needed to change attitudes.

It’s an easy trap to fall into, too. Change takes time. We’ve seen it. The battle for suffrage, for one. But everyone wants change to happen right this second, and that’s just impossible. There are constant arguments that “men can’t change” with the additions about how long it’s taken to get the rights that we have now, but... although it took time, men in certain societies have changed. That’s why there’s contention between things like “makeup is oppressive and women should feel free to dress modestly with headscarves” vs “headscarves are oppressive and women are empowered when wearing makeup,” because different cultures have different issues that still need to be faced, and there’s no simple one-size-fits-all, which makes feminism even more complicated.

“Lesbian separatist feminism” is an easy, incorrect answer. Instead of all the questions and realisations that different groups of women have different needs, that we have to come up with answers to extremely difficult questions like how to make it so women and men are truly equal and can live in peace, it’s all simplified to an extreme degree. Every single individual man bad, no redemption. Lesbians and women in same-sex relationships good. Women in opposite-sex relationships have to be taught they’ll be abused and when they’re taught, if they stay with a man and end up being abused or raped, that’s their fault. Confronting the full range of female socialisation is too hard, so if you’re in or want a same-sex relationship, you’re immune to ever prioritising men/being misogynistic/etc.

I think that’s why there are genuine “ex-radfems” who believe that this is all that radical feminism is and can ever be, so they come to realisations that they’re not bad people if they’re not lesbians, that they do actually know a man who’s misogynistic in some words and minor actions but is trying, or otherwise realise that the goals aren’t going to actually lead to women’s liberation, only an internalisation of misery and self-hatred, only sanctioned misogyny towards women who are deemed “bad,” and then they end up thinking... if this is what being a feminist is, then I don’t want to be a feminist.

If critical thinking were actually valued here by women that genuinely wanted women’s full liberation, then all of this would be extremely obvious.

Any actual, good feminism is genuinely intersectional, polices against all bigotry, finds common ground between all women, understands that there are different contexts from different cultures and backgrounds that need to be fought in unique ways, needs to address how women can be liberated through frank discussions and reality-based thinking, needs concrete stepping-stone goals to improve things at least a little for women per generation as we know that change can be glacially slow, and work from a basis of anger about our oppression to keep fight in us, but also a place of compassion so that even the most tradwife anti-feminist woman will always feel safe, prioritising female solidarity before anything else and providing spaces for women to unlearn whatever bigotries they individually have where they know that with work, there is always space for forgiveness, love and acceptance for them.

That’s exactly why it’s incredibly hard to be feminist, it’s why every feminist has moments of failure and frustration, but also why this and other “feminist” spaces are more eager to embrace blatant misogyny and fetishisation and hatred and abuse than actual feminism.

For all you know, that very feminine person with long hair you thought was cute is actually a man, (cis or trans), and goes by he/him pronouns. By /your own/ logic, that n-b people who are “female passing or androgynous” enough are included because “you can never tell”, feminine men who look “female enough” could be included in lesbianism. i found this very lovely article and just...really would like young queer people to remember that the concept of “bi” and “lesbian” as being completely different and totally incompatible is ahistorical and not grounded in the ways our community has worked in the past at all 

and i get how important it feels to build a fence around your identity when it is threatened, and this article (by a lesbian!) is sympathetic to that so i hope it is comfortable! but rigidly maintaining attraction or behavior or naming purity tests for community building is also applying very absolute and heterosexist framing to the ways we structure queer identities? which is very unqueer.

This seems to boil down to the idea that if you’re bi, there’s no need to call yourself lesbian (since bisexual wlw are still bisexual when they’re with women), and if you’re lesbian, there’s no need to call yourself bi (since nblw and trans wlw are still included in the ‘lesbian’ term). The carrd actually explains that position reasonably well.

However, I don’t agree. I don’t think “bi lesbian” is inherently problematic, even if the label is technically ‘unnecessary’. If lesbians and bi people need labels for their own individual issues, ‘bi lesbian’ has the same virtue. All the quotes below are from “Bisexual Women and the ‘Threat’ to Lesbian Space” by Sharon-Dale Stone in 1996. Sadly I don’t have a link because it’s not open-access.

Okay, reasoning:

Bisexual people should not have their attraction to women discounted. While bisexuality as a label does include “bi lesbian” attractions, I’m going to believe that bi lesbian people know this and have a reason for their self-ID.

Stone quote on this topic: “there’s a history of “defin[ing] the attraction a bisexual experiences towards other women as irrelevant and argu[ing] that these women are not competent to know and define their own sexual/sensual responses”.

As for “it’s lesbophobic to imply lesbians can be attracted to men”... it’s actually fact to say that lesbians can be attracted to men. It’s important to note that attraction does not remotely equal actual activity, wanting to do so, or sexual compatibility. But a level of attraction to men is surprisingly common. (I’ve definitely gotten in trouble saying this before when referring to a study about how lesbian women react to sexual images of male vs female bodies). Quote on the topic:

“In her study of sexual behavior among 323 self-defined lesbians and 42 self-defined bisexual women, Paula Rust [...] found that "only one-third of lesbian-identified respondents stated that they were one hundred percent attracted to women" and, among lesbians who had been out more than twenty years, 91 percent had had heterosexual relationships since coming out. Clearly, a lot of lesbians are sleeping with men. Without suggesting that all lesbians sleep with men, it would seem that the difference between lesbians and bisexual women is that the former group does not publicly acknowledge attraction to men, whereas the latter group does. “

For reference, Stone is a lesbian, was involved in lesbian separatist and radical feminist communities as early as the 1970′s, and this was written in the 90′s.

"She comes to work and she does her job!”: Casual Ableism in the Work Place

Today, while sitting in a shaded outdoor common space on my college campus, comparing sets of blood test results from the last year to see if there was anything I wanted to bring up with my doctor, I overheard a snippet of conversation between two middle aged women. What stood out to me was the woman who said, clearly in praise, “I know she’s suffered extremely, but she comes to work and she does her job!”

This is a kind of violence.

Now, maybe you’re reading this thinking What?? Sounds like the lady is a badass, good for her! Or maybe you’re thinking Why are you complaining? I would be appreciative that my coworker was doing her job despite hardship! Everybody has problems, I have problems, but I don’t bring them to work with me!

So before I break this down, let me tell you a little bit about two of my coworkers with disabilities: for context, there are other people at my place of employment with disabilities but I am most familiar with “A” and “B”’s specific circumstances, so they’re who I’m going to talk about here. Both coworkers I am discussing here are white, straight, cis women. I am not going to give any specifics that might make them identifiable, but I will say that “A” is in a skinny young adult with an autoimmune disorder; and “B” is middle aged, plus-sized, and has multiple disabilities. “B” is required to be provided with a chair so that she can sit periodically and has restrictions on how much weight she can lift; “A” has not requested or received any accommodations, although she does miss work periodically when she has bad flair ups. My manager has told me multiple times that she hates seeing “B” sit down because she thinks it “looks bad,” and both she and other managers have frequently harassed “B,” telling her that they need to see her doing more, threatening to stop allowing her use the chair (despite the fact they are required by company policy, and I believe law, to provide this accommodation), and writing her up for sitting down, claiming she is using her chair “too much.” All this is despite the fact that she was moved, against her wishes and to her disadvantage, by said managers from a position that allowed her to accomplish tasks while sitting (and to use a mobility aid while performing tasks while standing), to a position which makes it so that sitting in accordance with her doctor’s directions makes it more difficult for her to accomplish her assigned tasks; she also has less ability to use a mobility aid. “B” frequently expresses concern that she will be fired, and frequently goes longer than she is supposed to without sitting or lifts significantly more than she is supposed to (impacting her health), because she is afraid of being written up, or having a customer complain she was not helpful enough. My other coworker, “A” frequently works while visibly suffering from flair-ups and explains at length to myself and other managers that she is trying to get her health stabilized so that she does not inconvenience anybody, and because she wants to be a good employee. My manager praises “A,” except when “A” does have to miss a period of work because of her condition, and then, despite the fact that “A” always brings in documentation showing she was not only having a flair up, but was receiving treatment, my manager writes “A” up because her absences are “too much at this point,” and “beyond what we can reasonably excuse.” This is only the smallest possible example of the harm done by praising someone for “coming to work and doing her job.”

This mentality focuses on a valuing of human life based off of how productive and convenient a person is, and it’s something I see prevalent in classroom and employment settings (both as the affirmation, as well as the inverse “I know X is going through a lot, but they’re attitude is terrible, they’re just not doing a good job!”). Essentially, the value assigned to a person as an employee (or as a student) is based on how much they are able to do despite disability (or other barriers), and is framed through a lens of personal convenience (ie “I’m not ableist, I just don’t want to get stuck doing all the work because they can’t”). At its core, I believe the idea that this mentality stems from ableism, neoliberalism, and capitalism.

Disabled people, especially disabled women, are under constant surveillance; there’s a great article by Sharon Dale Stone called “The Myth of Bodily Perfection,” where she discusses the idea of bodily perfection and points out that morality is generally tied to ability, and that people (especially women) are likely to conceal disability if they can. This is because of capitalist ideas of productivity, as well as neoliberalism; anyone who is not appropriately productive, who can’t come to work and do their job, must just be lazy, must not be trying hard enough. “Model” disabled figures, such as the woman I overheard be discussed on campus, are used to prove this; if she can do her job, why can’t someone else? What is overlooked is not only that people have different needs and abilities and not everyone can come in every single day and meet/exceed expectations (or that the additional burden of trying to do this may not be desirable, and shouldn’t be enforced), but it overlooks the actual lived experiences of this “ideal” figure: what is it costing her to fill this role? Why is she put in a position where she has to? Furthermore, why are you blaming those who cannot do it? While it may be inconvenient for you to “pick up the slack,” rather than blaming your disabled coworker, maybe ask why your employer is setting you both up to fail--why is your coworker being asked to work beyond their ability, and why are you? Why is the workplace not setup to accommodate for disability?

This also ties into another of Stone’s points: that we imagine individuals are “totally able or totally disabled, with no in-between,” and that disability cannot be concealed (418); essentially, in the hegemonic imagination if someone is disabled they should not only experience the same amount of disability at all times, but should be completely (and visibly) disabled. The employed disabled figure is something of a paradox: while neoliberal Model Minority figures exist, those with visible disabilities must either be able to achieve this status, or be viewed as unemployable; this comes out in sentiments along the lines of “Well, if they were able to do x,y,z task last week, they can do it today!” and “All I’m saying is if they can’t do the job, they shouldn’t work here!” With invisible disabilities, it largely comes out as a complete refusal to believe the person in question is disabled; this doesn’t always mean a specific belief that the person is lying, but rather a refusal to engage with, on a meaningful level, the idea that a person who “looks” healthy and normal has real limitations that impact their ability to do things, and is not just “being lazy” when they can’t do something.

So what’s the solution to this? Ultimately, what I want is good allyship. Think critically before you speak. Ask yourself why is it so important to you that your coworkers, who are “suffering extremely” are also meeting your standards of productivity. Look for ways to make your workplace or classroom more accessible. And above all else, try to find ways to build solidarity; instead of praising the woman who is working despite suffering, ask what you and others can do to alleviate the suffering.

For those who feel that the light of their testimony is fading, they should be patient. Keep their promises to God, and patiently turn your stones to glass. You are making progress and God sees you and gives you credit for trying. The light will come back if you start diligent.

My purpose is to emphasize the charity in missionary, temple, and ministering work. Sharing the gospel is founded in a love for all men. A friend on mine admired the church but maintained loyalty to his heritage church. A year after share an invitation to be baptized I traveled with Gordon B Hinckley who became friends with Otto and when presented with the same loyalty to his Christian church, told him that's not good enough, this is the true Church of God. Otto was later baptized.

Performing family ordinances will bring families together and keep them save. Women and Men have different roles, but have the same stewardship and ability to receive revelation for their families.

We need to actively make our home a refuge from the world. The war for the souls of all, especially children, are won in the home.

It is fundamentally important to prepare for the second coming. Oppression and injustice will vanish. The lamb will wipe all tears and lead us to glory. The baby will not die until he is old, and he will not die and lay in the ground but be changed and receive glory.

God has fixed the day where the world will be judged.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day saints is commissioned to prepare the world for Christ. The people of the Church are uniquely prepare to give massive amounts of time and resources to go about that purpose.

Those on the Earth at the time of the second coming will be filled with knowledge of the Lord and will be of one heart and sing. Before he comes the gospel will be taught to the whole world. The gather of Israel is the most important event going on today. The book of Mormon is the instrument of gathering. Elijah has come, it was in April 1836.

This is the Lords work and he allows us to work with him. We are climbing to the climax. Let's celebrate Easter this year as a reminder that Jesus is coming back.

This life's purpose is to obtain a body, have a fullness of joy, and experience:

Physical death

Spiritual death

Inflections and diseases

Disabilities and imperfections

Some think the atonement is finite and won't resolve a sin or weakness. Developing an increased understanding of the atonement increases our desire to forgive ourselves and others.

The atonement gives us an eternal perspective, the gift of the holy ghost and healing for hurt.

We are given the knowledge the this life isn't the end. At the end of life what's really important comes out: covenants, fidelity, and family.

Exaltation is a family matter. We are not guaranteed to be with our loved ones after death. We need to make covenants and and receive essential ordinances in order to be sealed as a family.

The anguish of my heart is when loved ones decline the call of Christ. They make the world better, but do not come unto the Lord and know his love for them. We, as people, are settling for second best. Pour out your heart to God, ask him if this is true.

If you don't know if God exists, put yourself in a position to have a relationship with him. Ask him if he's there, ask him if he loves you and then listen.

Jesus Christ invites us to take the covenant path back home and to follow him. Do the spiritual work to figure it out yourselves. Time is running out.
