Okay but fr I am so sick of trying to pick between two detriments when it comes to milk. I love cow's milk but I also know the extensive ecological cost between land use, methane, carbon dioxide and water. By god, the water... (I did an assessment that included researching and calculating all this). Phew.
Not a fan of almond really except for flavoured milk treats, and that also uses water extensively so I'm not too interested in it.
I love oat milk, its much better ecologically, but. The packaging x__x Tetra Paks cannot be recycled in Australia (there is a single recycling plant I think and its in another state). So while the crop footprint is generally smaller than cow milk, the packaging is causing another Massive Issue. Landfill is one of the primary contributors to methane accumulation in the atmosphere (alongside livestock) so it really feels like such a lose-lose situation OTL Especially when you consider that for every bottle of cow milk, you go through two oat milk paks because they come in 1L instead of 2L.
At least cow milk bottles get recycled. I just hope that with increasing use of alternative milks maybe more recycling plants will open up for this type of packaging? Because they can be recycled but you need special machinery. Similarly with blister packs (the pharmaceutical companies should be paying for that one 100%).
And I like being able to store heaps of oat milk in the cupboard and not have to worry about it spoiling because it lasts ages! Its cheaper and easier. I do also like UHT cow milk also.
Better sustainability practices are achievable but it seems so impossible when you have no money to set yourself up for less plastic, and things touted as "better alternatives" still have massive impacts.
It shouldn't be this damn hard to cut plastic out of my life >:(

simple skincare tips!
🌼eat the foods that love you back. your skin is a direct mirror of your internal situation. if your digestive system is being bombarded often by foods that create a lot of wastes and residues, that does more harm than good. and so, the struggle to eliminate them will be reflected in your skin. your diet constitutes the vast majority of your skin health. change your meals to be whole food plant based (still delicious, satisfying, and exciting) & watch your skin glow and your skincare routine simplify.
🌼be conscious of what's going on your skin. the skin layers can be over-cleansed, imbalanced, and aggravated when the skin microbiome and pH are disrupted. if you wipe out the beneficial bacterial populations with harshly formulated products, you may find that you break out (i.e. harmful bacterial populations begin to thrive). use gentle, simple skin formulas such as castile soaps, natural oils & butters (i recommend jojoba oil for mostly everyone), natural soap bars, and clays. most commercial skin care products disturb the skin cells (introduce too much foreign material to the body, unsuitable pH ranges, imbalance the microbiome, etc). they sell because it's convention to buy them, the brands are well-known, and their sales pitches are enticing. but really, no cream or serum will ever be the magic potion your skin was asking for. it will only be a band-aid, at best. truly healthy skin comes from diet, and the products are just for any other necessary maintenance. if you get a pimple, you should look first to why the pimple emerged, not what treatment will remove it.
🌼keep your lymph flowing. simple ways to do this are through good lifestyle habits. things like doing exercise & sports you find fun, breathwork, dry brushing, eating lots of fruit, avoiding wearing bras & other tight clothing items, lymphatic massage/gua sha can all be helpful.
🌼focus on hydration via fresh fruits and veggies. the water within plant foods is more useable to your cells, and your skin will cease being overly oily or dry overtime (especially if you reduce/eliminate your salt & oil intake). it will also help to encourage lymphatic flow, so you can see problems like blemishes, cellulite, old scars diminish after great consistency.
🌼allow your skin to breathe. this is especially good if you spend time in stuffy (poorly ventilated) indoor environments, like offices, hospitals, planes, etc. one great way is via herbal facial steaming (i recommend it 3x a week or so). make a hot infusion of an aromatic tea, cover it and allow it to cool a few minutes, and, with closed eyes, allow the pores to open and receive the herbal medicine (this is a great time to meditate, manifest, and just feel pampered). getting more fresh air, working up a sweat, and going to a sauna are also ways to allow your skin to breathe.
🌼avoid steroid prescriptions creams at all costs. they are very deleterious to health in the long term, and they can be very painful to come off of. it's not a real fix. it's not worth hurting your kidneys & adrenals for. evaluate your diet instead. do you eat dairy? choose plant-based dairy options instead (they're simple to make yourself too). do you eat a lot of fats? try oil-free cooking methods instead (opt for sautéing with a bit of water, baking, steaming, air frying, etc). avoiding eating out as much.
🌼be aware of what you're putting in your hair as well. your shampoos, conditioner, leave-ins, gels, moisturizers, oils, serums, etc all tend to touch your face too, when your hair touches your face. if they wouldn't be good enough to put on your face, don't put them in your hair. a lot of the best skin cleansers are also suitable as shampoos. a lot of oils and butters can be used for both. plant-based gels like aloe vera or flax seed are simple to DIY, and are dual-use once again. basically, this will simplify your life.
🌼understand the water that runs through your pipes. if your shower and tap water are like most people's around the world, they aren't optimal for our skin. for example, they contain added chemicals to sanitize the water but that can prevent the proper microbiomes from developing on your skin. a weak skin microbiome is prone to skin issues. so, try to use distilled water on your face (if you're not able to get a water filter, a gallon jug at a store is affordable. they're about $1.30 USD in my area).

Cheapest Beauty Routine

We all deserve to feel beautiful and take care of ourselves no matter what background we have. There are so many beauty routines that recommend products that are so expensive and swear that you need to have a lot of them as well. You don't need the best that money can buy just feel more confident in your own skin! In this post, I'm going over everything from skin care, to exercise, to makeup. If you want to take care of yourself, but you don't have a lot of money to spare, this is for you.
Skin care routine:
Wash your face with a bar of soap - get some soap, lather it between your hands, rub it over your face, and then wash it off with cold water. If you have dry skin, you can get some soap that is moisturising, and if you have sensitive skin, make sure to get a fragrance free one. Make sure to pat your skin dry with a towel or cloth, don't rub it dry.
Moisturise it with a moisturising sunscreen - the cheapest one is from the cancer council. Make sure to put it on after washing your face in the mornings.
At night, use a general moisturiser - To make it cheaper, I would recommend a gentle body lotion or just general moisturiser that you can also use on your body. Make sure it's a gentle one though, as your face is usually more sensitive and fragile than your body.
Hair routine:
Brush your hair everyday - this is basic, but still important! Once every day is the minimum, but if your hair gets very tangled, you might need to brush it multiple times a day. Brushing it before your shower is also great, because it makes washing your hair easier and helps to prevent breakage.
Wash your hair with shampoo + conditioner - it's better to buy shampoo and conditioner separately, but if you're REALLY low on money or you don't want to focus on haircare, head and shoulders has a good two in one.
Air dry your hair - this will make your hair more frizzy, but you don't have to buy a hair dryer for it. If you really hate the frizz, then you can get a leave in conditioner or a anti-frizz serum/cream/spray.
Don't go to bed with your hair wet! - if you can help it. It will increase breakage and make your hair even more frizzy.
Wash your hair brush every three weeks - this is really important to make sure that your hair doesn't get too oily. You can wash it by soaking it in water with some shampoo in it for 5 minutes or so.
Shower routine:
Wash your body with the same soap you used for your face - you can use a separate scented one if you want to smell nice, but you don't have to.
Exfoliate with exfoliating gloves - use your soap and exfoliate your body with these rough gloves. It's the cheapest way to exfoliate without buying an exfoliating scrub. However, if you have eczema or other skin conditions like it, DO NOT USE THESE. You will have to buy a cheap gentle exfoliating scrub, because these gloves can irritate your skin condition.
Moisturise your body after the shower - use the body lotion or general moisturiser I mentioned in the skin routine.
Hygiene routine:
Consider using a soft toothbrush - did you know that there are hard, medium, and soft toothbrushes? I did not for a while ;^-^ but a soft toothbrush is better. It will make sure that you don't shave away at your gums from pressing too hard, and they are just as cheap as normal toothbrushes.
Floss your teeth at least once a day - floss is very cheap and it will make your teeth healthier and they will look better. If you hate using floss, you can get those flossers that have a handle which makes it way easier to use. They are still very cheap, but you'll need to refill them more often than normal floss.
Clip your nails every two weeks - clipping them fairly often helps prevent nail issues and keeps them healthy. You can buy a cheap nail clipper at a supermarket.
Moisturise your hands every morning + night - make sure you rub it over your nails as well, as this can also keep them healthy. You can just use the body lotion or general moisturiser in your shower routine. It's slightly better to use hand cream if you have some extra money, but you don't have to.
Use antiperspirant deodorant - antiperspirant helps to stop you from sweating, while normal deodorant just tries to mask the smell. If you sweat a lot, try mens antiperspirant.
Optional: use a body spray after getting dressed - spray it on and under your clothes, it will make you smell nice! You don't have to, but body spray is cheaper than perfume and you can find them in the supermarket.
Exercise routine:
Use YouTube to find free at-home workout routines - there are so many workouts on there, you will definitely find one that works for you. And it doesn't have to be a workout if you don't want that! You can do yoga, pilates, calisthenics, dancing, anything you want! You can even just put on your favourite kpop dance video and try to learn the dance! The point is to move and stretch your body at least 4 times a week.
Go for a walk every day - it can be short or long, it doesn't matter, Walking is great for your body and your mental health. You can walk with headphones and just play some music, or you can just take in your surroundings.
Healthy eating:
Eat more protein - the best way to do this is to make sure that your three main meals have protein in them. For example, you can have eggs for breakfast, a chicken sandwich for lunch, and a beef mince stir-fry for dinner. It doesn't have to be expensive and you don't have to buy protein supplements. Adding even a little bit more protein to your diet will improve your health.
Eat spinach instead of lettuce - or mix some spinach with your lettuce in a salad or a sandwich. Spinach is high in iron and eating more of it can make you feel less tired. It's also cheaper than buying vitamins.
Eat some fruit and vegetables every day - having at least one of each every day is very good for you! They each have important vitamins and minerals that keep you feeling healthy. You can get whatever ones that you like to eat, but if you're looking for the cheapest ones, bags of apples and carrots are pretty cheap and you get a lot of them.
Drink two bottles of water every day - this is the minimum! If you want, you can buy one of those water bottles that tracks how much water you should drink in one day, but I personally find these bottles too big and inconvenient. If you feel the same, you can just get a normal sized water bottle and just make sure you drink two of them. It's better to drink more, but this is a great start!
Optional
Makeup:
A basic and cheap face of makeup is concealer, eyeliner, mascara, and lip balm - it doesn't change the look of your face much, but it does make you feel a lot prettier and more confident in yourself.
You can get cheap nail polish at a drug store - if you want to paint your nails, it doesn't need to be expensive. You can also get cheap nail polish remover if you need it.
Fashion:
Thrift! - you can get some cheap hidden gems at thrift stores! You'd be amazed at some of the stuff people give away.
You can get some cheap jewellery at Target - and if you're in Australia, Kmart is another great place to get it. You don't need super expensive jewellery to look and feel great! The goal is not to look expensive, it's to feel more beautiful and more confident.
So there is the cheapest beauty/self-care routine that I could come up with! This is the rundown of the costs for all the beauty products, not the food products or the optional makeup and clothing (it's in Australian dollars, so you'll need to convert to your currency if you're not from there):
Soap (3 pack) $4
Moisturising Sunscreen (150ml) $16
Body lotion (100ml) $9
Hair brush $6
Shampoo (100ml) $10
Conditioner (100ml) $10
Exfoliating gloves $12
Soft toothbrush $9
Floss $4 (pack of ~30 flossers is $1.50)
Nail clippers $7
Antiperspirant deodorant (100ml) $5
Water bottle $15
TOTAL: $107
Optional:
Leave in conditioner $10
Hand cream $5

TOTAL: $25
For an entire beauty routine, $107 or $132 is pretty good. And all of these products should last about three months. You'll only need to replace them once you run out, and some of them are just one-time purchases. If you're on a tight budget, this beauty routine makes you feel good and takes care of yourself without breaking the bank!

Ladies,
What shampoos are we using? I want to be taking care of my hair and scalp and the shampoos you can get at like Walmart/Target just aren't cutting it anymore. I've tried the budget friendlier Monday shampoo and Love Beauty and Planet, and the bougie brands like Prose and Function of Beauty. Nothing is giving me great results. I even tried the Viori rice shampoo bars and they just made my hair SUPER dry.
My areas of concern:
Oiliness
Hair thinning
Volume
Dandruff prevention/break down buildup
I also have the most sensitive skin under the sun so if you know of any brands that are "clean", those are preferred. if you have similar hair concerns and know of a great shampoo, recommendations are appreciated :)

your hairbrush article was so helpful how often do you do that? Is there anything else like that you do?
Sorry for sitting on this ask for like a week, I wanted to make sure I answered it properly!
I usually soak my hairbrush as per the article once a month, and give it a quick clean + remove hair every week (using shampoo + running water and let it air dry), but my hair is super thick and gets oily so you can alter that depending on what works for you/also the quality of your brush because overdoing it can damage longevity.
Honestly, little cleaning and care things like that usually take a while to pick up and add to your schedule, so adding on at a time over a longer period is usually the best way to incorporate them! Plus you learn things from other people or experience that you never considered.
I also:
• Soak things like tweezers, tongue scraper, razors, etc weekly in a hot soak with chlorhexidine + rinse with running water and dry (also this is a good time to clean out any containers you might keep things like toothbrushes in)
• Either soak or machine wash things like body brushes, exfoliators etc with either chlorhexidine or disinfectant + let air dry
• Clean piercings weekly, soak and clean as per above
• Soak water bottle in hot water and soap weekly + rinse + let air dry
• Every few months I make a point of deep cleaning shoes (sometimes I do this more in-depth and/or more frequently especially if I’ve been on conservation land or I’m limiting contamination from animal habitats)
• Clean out my purse/bags weekly (anything like wrappers and receipts removed) + make sure I have hand sanitiser + make sure I have things stocked I keep in my bag (Panadol, ibuprofen, a few masks, some pads/tampons, protein bar, small portable battery)
• I will also try to at least weekly wipe down my wallet/phone/keys/etc with antibacterial wipes
• Monthly soak of sports bras (+ any other clothes you tend to sweat in) with hot water and soap + rinse + wash as normal
• Wipe down with hot water/soap any bottles I keep in the shower (+ sometimes a small amount of bleach after) to keep nasty residues to forming, even ones I can’t see

physical self care tips for folks who don’t have the emotional/physical capacity to do so
disclaimer: these are not going to work for everyone nor are they a cure-all. sometimes you need additional help or sometimes these just aren’t going to work for you. this is not me assuming that every single mentally or physically disabled person is able to do all these. at the lowest points in my life i wasn’t even to get out of bed for days on end and once didn’t brush my teeth for several months. but these help some folks, and that’s all i’m going for!
can’t brush/floss your teeth? mouthwash. mouthwash always. plus you can get it in fun flavors :)
- additionally: are physically capable of brushing/flossing but can’t find the emotional capacity to do so? put on a video/show you like in the background. it helps me !
- oh also you can get toothpaste in fun flavors too if that helps
- you only really need to wash your face like once a day with a fairly gentle soap. like even a bar soap or a diluted hand soap works.
- don’t wanna deal with acne and stuff? pimple patches are your best friend (but wash your face first)
- additionally, acne is normal and common. you don’t have to have “perfect skin” and it’s super rare that people do (and if they do, they most likely invest in a bunch of expensive skincare products and routines).
- don’t/can’t shower? deodorant on stinky/sweaty areas. your armpits, your neck and upper back (trust me on this one), your crotch area, all that stuff.
- or you can just use a washcloth. wet it, put some soap on it, and then rub it on stinky areas. make sure there’s more water on it than soap so that you can wipe it off with a dry washcloth after.
- if you don’t wanna take care of your hair and you don’t need/want to keep it long, buzz it. or just cut it short!
- alternately, if you want/need to keep your hair long but can’t take care of it:
- if you have a looser hair type, run through it every now and then with a brush or your fingers. if you’re able, run through it with your fingers at least a few times a day. running it under water for a little and then gently running through it with your fingers/a comb works as well. also, dry shampoo is your best friend if you’ve got oily hair. if you don’t want to brush/wash it often, keep it in easy to maintain styles like regular braids.
- for black/coiled hair types: i’m not black and have 2c/3a wavy/curly hair so i really don’t know much about this so please do not take this as if i have firsthand experience, this is all internet knowledge/from black peers. i always open to better information, please tell me if you have any! from what i’ve heard and learned black/coiled hair doesn’t need to be washed as much. keeping it short helps because it shrinks easily and means you don’t have to wash/clean it often. but if you want to keep it long, it can get dry easily. separating it into sections and then running through it with a detangling brush helps (a good option is the Spornette DeVille Cushion Paddle Boar Bristle 344). protective hairstyles mean you don’t have to wash it that often as well. 
- some foods may not be healthy but if they’re easy to prepare and leave you sustained for some time, fucking go for it. as long as you don’t have any dietary/medical restrictions regarding them.
- foods like omelettes, oatmeal, microwavable burritos/ramen/etc, peanut butter on toast, tuna sandwiches, frozen chicken nuggets, bag salads, and mixed nuts are all easy to make and/or good sources of vitamins and protein.
- fatness isn’t a bad thing. you don’t need to work out or eat specifically to “stay in shape.”
- but if you do want to work out: i am not a physical therapist, personal trainer, etc. nor do i have much gym experience. listen to your body and consult legitimate medical sources/medical professionals. i am also not physically disabled. i cannot judge what is right for your body; only you and medical professionals can do that.
- remember to warm up and cool down. wear comfortable clothes that make you feel good. drink plenty of water!!!! and listen to what your body is telling you !!! if you experience pain/nausea, it’s time to stop for a bit and there’s no shame in that.
- simple workouts! focus on one specific thing, like flexibility or strength or something. walking/pacing is an easy one if you’re able to do that. listening to music while doing it helps too. - stretches are awesome. yoga is awesome. simple things that increase flexibility and don’t require a lot of physical activity are awesome. just a simple stretch now and then is rad as fuck.
- as always, laziness is a myth. sometimes your mind or your body just doesn’t want to do something and that’s perfectly fine.

Nikolai: This man uses a bar of soap he got from a grandma not too long ago and it's just lasted him forever, probably smells like lavender or chamomile. I love chamomile. His hair though smells like purple shampoo so he can keep his shine. Definitely has that sweaty man smell on him sometimes. You know the one. I bet you that his coat smells like ash and I bet he smokes, even occasionally, so the smell just sticks to his clothes.
Fyodor: He probably only showers once or twice a week so he smells a bit rank, but he never gets super sweaty so it's not that bad. If anything he doesn't smell super gross, but more like dust. Oily dust. He probably smells like caraway seeds, they just seem like a Fyodor thing.
He doesn't use cologne, personal headcannon that he uses a Barbie perfume he got from Nikolai because they thought it was hilarious but it ended up smelling really good so now it's just become his signature scent. No one would believe that the demon fyodor uses it, so it stays an inside joke.
Bram: Limewater. Or the way old wooden buildings smell. Leather is also a good bet. He just carries age and decay on him. Probably smells like what churches at old graveyards smell like.
Sigma: Leather but in a new handbag sort of way. He 100% wears a very nice cologne, although it might have a bit of a granny smell more than a sexy man smell. He smells new and expensive in a way. Kinda smells like copper coins too sometimes but that's only if you're really close to him.
Fukuchi: I think I did him already but to do him again - old. Like, old paper and old clothes. He definitely smells like alcohol and probably has a messy sort of smell on him. He tries to cover it up with cologne sometimes but you can smell his hangovers and the fact that he tries to hide his depression with sweets.

Dazai: Alcohol and Cologne. It's a complete guess of what you're gonna get. Depends on if it's a weekend or not. Also, he might smell like his recent suicide attempt, which tends to stay on his clothes for the next couple of days - Kunikida has to force him to wash his clothes, since once he tried to drown himself and smelled like river water for over 2 weeks. He isn't super hygienic, he's as bad as Fyodor.
Kunikida: oh this man is CLEAN clean. Power washes his asshole and everything. Showers every morning and night. He uses only gently scented soaps and shampoos, since he cares about PFAs. Uses one specific victoria's secret perfume that was discontinued and now has been ordering it for the last 4 years. He has a specific order in how he sprays it too - two on each side of the neck, and one on the wrists that he spreads. He does this daily.
Ranpo: Sweets. He is a regular at bath and body works and he buys warm vanilla sugar and douses himself in it. It's so strong that you can smell him for miles. He has been given many different scents but he refuses to use anything else, he will only use that one scent. It's a comfort thing for him.
Yosano: Like blood. Nothing washes the smell out, so she started smoking so she won't have to smell it on her anymore. So she just smells like cigarettes and blood. She sprays really strong perfume sprays on her clothes though so she won't have to smell the cigarettes. She doesn't go to bath and body works however, she buys from a vegan all-natural company in case anyone is allergic - She is a doctor, after all.
Fukuzawa: Grass and clean laundry, since he spends a lot of time outside talking to cats and every product he uses he tries to use those that bring him good childhood memories. He keeps his clothes religiously clean too, so he probably smells like good detergent.
Kenji: Dirt and cows. He probably just carries the smell of the farm with him, so he is a stinky kid. Kunikida forces him to wash up more often and makes him do his laundry, but his pet cow just always carries that smell on him.
Atsushi: He probably has that sweaty man smell on him, since I bet he is still adjusting to being a normal person after growing up in the orphanage. Personal headcannon that he hoards food, especially in his pockets and under his bed, so he has a bit of a food smell on him. You can just smell the wet noodles in his pockets that you know he is gonna eat in a couple of hours as if it's normal. He has problems he needs to work out.
Kyouka: Clean. She showers, and she has normal hygiene. You can probably smell the sweets she keeps on her though, and I doubt she uses perfume, but she uses a really a regular deodorant. She's an assassin, so she can't be noticed easily, including smell.
BONUS because he's basically in it
Poe: He smells like Karl, custard, and cologne. He goes days without showering so sometimes he just uses all spice to cover it up. Definitely has a strong smell of aftershave since he has to shave every day, which is hella minty. You won't smell it unless you're close to him though. He also has a strong smell of coffee on him.

Sunday Steve - Day Eight
Things that would be new or unfamiliar to Steve in the 21st century, either due to the time period he grew up in, or his social-economic status and other such factors.
Day Eight: Shampoo and Conditioner
Shampoo: The origins of the word shampoo comes from an Indian hair and body massage called champooi/champo.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s shampoo was a water soluble, dry shampoo powder that would be dissolved by the teaspoon in a cup of hot water (Link). Shampoo could also come as bars of soap, which could lather or be grated and dissolved into boiling water and left to cool and solidify.
A 1908 New York Times shampoo guide claims "hair is best shampooed at night, following thorough combing and brushing, and singeing split ends. Castile soap is applied with a stiff brush and rinsed four times every month to six weeks." (Link)
Bathing had become more and more common as part of the hygiene routine in the early 1900s, but shampooing was generally recommended every two weeks—or every four to six weeks (preferably using castile soap or tar soap) because shampoo was known for drying out and damaging hair. (Link)
While at-home shampooing was slowly becoming more common, it was more common—for those who could afford it—to get it commercially done. Most shampoo ads were targeted towards women, but men in barbershops "transitioned from using hair tonics to using shampoos to remove the build-up of heavy styling products" (Link).
The liquid shampoo first really started hitting the market in 1927. So by the 30s at-home shampooing became even more common. This is due to a combination of most Americans have in-house plumbing, their own bathrooms, and the shampoo formulas becoming less harsh and drying. The combination of all this meant one could wash their hair every week. (Link) (Every day shampooing began to be marketed in the 70s since oily hairstyles were out of fashion.)
Liquid shampoos were sold in glass bottles, while powdered shampoos came in tins.

It wasn't until 1934 that detergent-based (no-soap, modern) shampoos came onto the market (Link).
Sarah Rogers likely wouldn't have been able to afford to get her hair shampooed, but she could have made her own shampoo from castile soap bars (example youtube video) or bought shampoo powders which were then dissolved in water.
She would only wash her hair every few weeks, most likely brushing her hair and keeping it up in styles in-between washes. (Link) Using a clean brush to brush ones hair helped remove and evenly distribute oils.
In 1933 shampoo cost about 25-50 cents. (Link) (Link) I haven't dug deep to know exactly what kind of things Steve and Sarah would be able to afford. But it wouldn't surprise me if there were times they could and couldn't afford hair care products.
As for if Steve would shampoo his hair, he probably just used soap. Shampoo had soap in it until 1933 (which was why it was so drying) (Link). But men could afford to use soap on their hair since they usually had shorter hair and their natural head oils could help mitigate the damage.
I can find less information about men's hair routines if they couldn't afford to go to barbershops, so I'm less certain of what Steve would do. But 20s, 30s, and 40s men's hair styles had a lot of oil or greasy styling products. While these would need to be washed out for re-styling (probably weekly like women) the oil products would help against drying out the hair.
Men also always wore hats. Having stiff or slick-down hair was important so that hair styles wouldn't be ruined by putting on and removing hats. Hair oils would stain hats, chairs and other things heads came in contact with.

Don't be fooled by the ad. This vintage bottle of Glostora is 5 inches or 12.5 cm tall. It would be put on after shampooing, like conditioner.
In the Captain America: The First Avenger movie we can see that Steve's hair isn't slicked back. This could just be a modern day styling choice, but it could also show that Steve did not care about styling his hair.
Cleanliness was was important so he probably washed his hair every few weeks with soap and bathed regularly. But it doesn't look like he put heavy product in his hair. (Unlike Bucky, who probably had more reason to shampoo his hair. It wouldn't surprise me if Bucky went to the barbershop when he could afford it.)
Steve probably couldn't afford to do more to his hair than wash it with soap every few weeks. He likely made his own shampoo with castile or tar soap. This method makes more shampoo than the bottles of liquid shampoo being sold.
Conditioner: Conditioners originated from a product called brilliantine (developed in 1900) which was used to soften beards and moustaches. This product would be put on after styling in barbershops to make the hair shine and soften it. (Glostora and Hair Slik are similar products.) (Link)
"It was oil based, giving off a slimy residue to anything it touched. Homemakers knit lace doilies to cover the backs of high back chairs and couches to protect the furniture from men’s greasy heads" (Link)
Other items used similar to conditioners were hair tonics, or Wildwood Cream.
Conditioner became a necessity because of shampoo, as it is drying to the hair. So it wasn't used much until shampooing became more common (oil has a long history of being used to tame hair, but commercial conditioner products became more common along with shampoo use.) (Link)
Women caught on to these types of commercial products. I've had a hard time finding specific conditioner products from the 30s. Here is a hair care routine for women circa 1930 that mentions brillientine, so it looks like women began using brillientine as well before more specific conditioning products were developed.
There seemed to be more conditioner products developed by the 40s. Here's a conditioning cream from around the 40s, and a different one with a price (about 39¢).

(Drene was the first modern synthetic (no soap) shampoo and you can see in the side panel of this ad they say "Don't rob your hair of its glamour by using soap or liquid soap shampoo—which always leave behind a dulling film that dims the natural lustre and color brilliance!")
Wrap up
Modern day hair routines would be recognisable but still somewhat unfamiliar to Steve. This is partially because men's hairstyles have changed drastically from the slick-back styles he is used to. Hats have also gone out of style.
Also, it is common now in America to wash one's hair around three times a week. This shift came about with the change in hair styles. Woman leaving hair down and covering it less necessitates the need to shampoo and condition it more. (Women shampooed their hair once a week in salons up to the 60s).
The products are also slightly different. Liquid shampoo is the dominate form now (I doubt Steve ever bought liquid shampoo) and they come in plastic bottles. The liquid shampoo is likely a much different formula than he's used to. Additionally, conditioning is a very specific step in the process and hair product ingredients have evolved.
There are also combination products like 2-1 shampoo and conditioner which came about in the late 1980s.
Along with the cultural changes, Steve's socioeconomic status would effect his perception of hair-care routines and buying hair products.
With modern (no soap) products, Steve's hair is probably softer and shinier. Steve would have been aware of no soap products, but I don't think he would have bought them. However, he could have had these products used on him during his USO tour. Interacting with the women there probably introduced him to many products he was less familiar with.

This is my current routine/rules for keeping myself healthy-ish while having an ed (kind of harm reduction
Tw cals, food mention
I never eat less than 600 cals a day, it leads to binging and depression for me.
I don't do extremely intense workouts. For me, it raises my cortisol levels and leads to feeling weak and binging. I do a mobility exercise video in the morning and then I do a walking workout video in the afternoon. Though if I get a job that will change slightly, but still the same intensity.
I take vitamin d, vitamin e, folic acid, iron, and magnesium + zinc.
I use ogx's coconut miracle oil at least 1 hour before I shower, it protects hair from water fatigue
I use ogx's coconut oil serum, I spray an argon oil leave in conditioner on damp hair then a very small amount of serum.
I eat tuna and/or salmon 3 times a week. You can also take fish oil supplements or eat an omega 3 trail mix but I prefer fish because it has a lot of protein
Speaking of protein, I eat as much as I can. It can be hard because the diet foods I eat don't have a lot. Here's a list of foods I eat that have protein:
Dannon light and fit Greek yogurt (80 cals, 12g protein)
Protein powder in coffee (about 36-38 cals depending on the brand, I use 2 tablespoons and blend it with 4oz almond milk and pour it in my coffee. You can also buy it pre made, super coffee is 80 cals with 10g protein. They also sell creamer with 15 cals 1g protein)
Fish like salmon and tuna
Frozen meals. Healthy choice has power bowls that normally have about 20g of protein or more for 300+ cals. Most frozen meal brands have a protein line
Pb2. I use this when I have a banana so there's protein with it, 60 cals and 6g protein
Protein bars, my favorite is the quest white chocolate raspberry

Water, self explanatory. Try to use electrolyte packets, low calorie and very needed. Propel is the brand I prefer
I take naps. When I work I take naps on my days off, must be at least 30 minutes but preferably 90 minutes. Sleep is so important
If you struggle with sleeping too much, add more fruit/cals into your diet. Get a really loud alarm and the first thing you do when you wake up is eat a citrus fruit or a banana. I know bananas are scary but they work great. Cut one in half or get small ones and eat one a day. And of course coffee can help. Drink green tea with lunch, caffeinated.
Using a shampoo and conditioner that work well for my hair. No, drugstore haircare will not ruin your hair. If you have the trademark dry, brittle hair that comes with this, use a sulfate free shampoo, and a conditioner with silicones in it, use pre shampoo oil treatments and limit how much you wash your hair. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week or once a month depending on how dry your hair is. Try to get a satin bonnet to sleep in or spray leave in conditioner and use a hair oil then braid your hair before bed. Trust me, hair oil on your mids and ends can help. Ogx sells mists for fine hair, those work great. If you have thick hair use the coconut serum. Make sure you're using leave in conditioner after showering
Be insanely gentle with your hair, no elastics or tight hairstyles. Comb your hair with your fingers first, gently detangling with your fingers before brushing from the bottom up, very lightly. Use leave in conditioner before you brush. Use a wide tooth comb on wet hair and do not rub your hair with a towel. Gently squeeze until excess water is removed. Try to limit brushing with a hairbrush or comb to once or twice a day.
Use cuticle oil, ideally it has vitamin e in it. I got mine off Amazon. Make sure it's on your cuticles and nails
Use lotion on your body after every shower. I know it's annoying and tiring but it will help combat the dull skin that happens, try to find one with hyaluronic acid
For face skin, use a gentle cleanser or just water unless your skin is oily, then you can get away with more medicated options. Use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid in it. My top picks are peach slices snail rescue moisturizers (regular for normal to dry skin, oil free for oily skin), vanicream daily facial moisturizer with hyaluronic acid and for very dry skin cerave moisturizing cream in a tub (you can find knockoffs, mine is Walmart brand)
Cleansers I like for when the 3d effects skin is vanicream gentle cleanser, cerave sa cleanser for if you still have oily skin, Cetaphil sensitive skin cleanser and CeraVe cream to foam cleanser (you can find knockoffs for most of these products)
Use a niacinamide serum if you can afford it and your skin can handle it, it will brighten up your face.
I use a body serum but it is not a necessity, but for anyone who wants to try it I use the b.fresh brightening body serum, you could also use their dull to dewy one, its also good
I eat healthy fats, this comes from peanut butter, fish, avocado, eggs, dark chocolate and chia seeds
I have one day a month that I can have a normal portion of food I really want but make me guilty normally (Chinese takeaway, taco bell, Wendy's, McDonald's etc) it cannot be a binge, but it would be more than I normally eat.
This is not intentional but on Friday and Saturday I do eat more because I am with my boyfriend. All normal portions for the most part. I just eat more and things I wouldn't normally have like regular peanut butter honey toast, poptarts, spaghetti, etc.
I try not to weigh myself every day. I don't weigh in on Sunday or Monday because I know I will be bloated from the increase in cals
I use a cavity preventing toothpaste and mouth wash. And I at least floss once a day. I use whitening toothpaste one day a week for both times I brush that day
These things help me stay healthy and sane while I am currently in the midst of my 3d. Not all of them will work, but maybe some may be useful to others.
