“classic literature is so boring, why do high schools never change the reading requirements for kids? how can these books still be relevant?!”
oh, honey, if you only knew the amount of teen romcoms based on classic literature

I love Much Ado About Nothing for many reasons, the main one being that my friends would definitely come up with an elaborate scheme to get me a partner despite me being resistant to it.
Although I fear it may be more ominous in real life than it was in the play.
Speaking of which, PLEASE watch the adaptation with Catherine Tate and David Tennant as Beatrice and Benedick, it's hilarious.

📽️ 10 Things I Hate about You (1999)
This is one of my favorite movies. I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen it, but it never gets old. It’s based on a Shakespeare play (The Taming of the Shrew) which is probably why all the characters are so interesting and relatable. Shakespeare’s themes are so universal and timeless, and I think this movie is too. I’ve loved this movie from the first time I saw it.
Sex/nudity: 5/10 (drawings of breasts and penises, off-screen flashing, kissing, many innuendoes, nicknames for male parts, talk of teen pregnancy)
Language: 3/10 (mostly mild but there is quite a bit)
Violence: 2/10 (a couple fights)
Overall rating: 9/10

Tumblr media
Thought this table was pretty cool, so I copied it up onto Google Sheets to post here! :)
(Sir Toby above everyone in BOTH his amount of lines and his amount of scenes...as he should be though to be fair, what a cool guy)
(also I linked the source I got it from in the ID! ✨)

Anyone but You (2023)
After an amazing first date, Bea and Ben's fiery attraction turns ice-cold--until they find themselves unexpectedly reunited at a wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.
Loosely based on William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, this is a delightful, easy-going, and often quite funny romantic comedy. I really enjoyed the setting in beautiful Australia. The movie is sweet and feel-good, so if you’re looking for something light-hearted that will leave you with a smile, then check it out.

What if we told you there was an alternate version of Hamlet where, instead of doing lots of brooding about his uncle and not talking to anyone, he asked Ophelia for help? What if we told you we took Hamlet and reimagined it as a modern day romantic comedy, with a fake relationship trope at it's core?
Because we... did exactly that.
His Royal Fakin' Highness is that romcom. While away at college in America, Hamlet is called back home after his father (the king)'s sudden passing, only to find out that, due to an antiquated law that requires the heir to be married before ascending the throne, the crown is passing not to him, but to his uncle. Ophelia, his childhood enemy who grew up underfoot at the palace while her father was the king's closest advisor, helps him stage an elaborate fake engagement, hoping to buy enough time to find a loophole in the law. But can anyone really get into that kind of thing without some complications?
Plus, no romcom (or hamlet adaptation) is complete without the best friend -- Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are here, but we fondly like to call them Rosie & Gil. Here's their vibe:
Tumblr media
His Royal Fakin' Highness is a hopeful, hilarious, absurd romantic comedy, and is perfect for people who spend the winter holidays watching (and rewatching) movies like Love Actually and The Holiday. It draws inspiration from the 2000's romcom genre (so if you're into movies like Ten Things I Hate About You or The Proposal? This is for you). And the whole thing is available to listen right now, from start to finish!
You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Or just press play below to start the first episode!

Movies watched in 2024
Anyone But You (2023, USA)
Director: Will Gluck
Writers: Ilana Wolpert & Will Gluck
Mini-review:
After watching (and loving) Glen Powell on Twisters yesterday, I remembered I hadn't seen this one yet, so here we are. And what struck me the most about it was how genuinely funny it is! I don't know why, but I didn't expect it to make me laugh so much. Guess I'm a sucker for the tropes showcased here, fake-dating and misunderstandings. Tbh, the only thing I had heard about this movie was that Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney's chemistry is off the charts, and it absolutely is. Every single scene they share is so fun and engaging. I'm not saying Anyone But You is a game-changer or anything like that, but it's thoroughly enjoyable in a way that feels pretty refreshing.

Film Review - Anyone But You (2023)
⭐⭐ Rating: 2 out of 5. I remember when this came out, and everyone was going absolutely mental. Apparently, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell had the greatest chemistry anyone had ever seen. I honestly just think people use the phrase “great chemistry” when they mean they’re both hot. So much of this film hangs on the audience being attracted to one or both of the main stars. At least that would…
