Thanks for bringing this up because this again ties into SOA's fumbling with bringing Sonic into western markets and the unfortunate dissonance between them and SOJ.

The american sonic bible wasn't even drafted until 1991, a year after SOJ had already started production on Sonic 1 in 1990. SOJ had their own internal material and canon that was firmly established and published in full with the Japanese manuals of the games themselves. You can read a full breakdown of these manuals and the whole story of the classic trilogy here.

For whatever reason at this time, SOA either didn't receive materials from SOJ (Yasushi Yamaguchi also known as Judy Totoya, has mentioned that Sega Team was so focused on just making the games, they had little time to spend on cross-checking everything SOA did) or just decided to go off doing their own thing. This bible is where the earliest mentions of Sonic's planet being called "Mobius" occurs. Again, completely divorced from anything to do with what SOJ wanted or intended.

This habit of SOA pushing their ideas for Sonic and his lore continued beyond just the first game. You had Sonic CD's localized manual calling Amy "Princess Sally" or the inclusion of SatAM characters in Spinball (a game made almost exclusively by an American only team in STI).

The two things that were adopted from American only lore were Eggman's real name being Ivo Robotnik and Sonic's love of chili dogs, which are fairly easy to elegantly insert into the established game lore without any major disruptions.

We're at a point where having any sort of continued confusion on these facts should have been made peace with AGES ago. Mobius, SatAM and Archie are simply self contained things that were products of their time and do not have any impact nor relevance to on the main series overall.

(To note, this is NOT a criticism on SatAM or Archie themselves. Just laying the facts out.)

Just answering a question on one of my posts from earlier.

Mobius as a name is ONLY from the Archie comics. Its never been used in the games to refer to the planet.

And hilariously, if you've read the comics, Mobius is literally just Earth but a futuristic, post-apocalyptic one similar to the OVA. They changed the planet's name because I guess in the comic's timeline, everyone forgot all of Earth's name and history after an alien race came and destroyed human civilization.
