GO Thoughts
Ok, so, this hit me today.
aziraphale reads books. Loves books. Always hungering for knowledge. what is Crowley's whole past??? Asking too many questions, wanting too much knowledge, then tempting Eve into knowledge.
Prachett and that other dude knew what they were doing. The producers and writers of the show knew what they were doing. Aziraphale loving Crowley's final sin as an angel and his first temptation....ahhh my mindddd

yeah, let’s not call out that specific tweet or the twitter user who tweeted it, since as you say it’s a common enough comment.
…probably because it’s true?
but i think you might be assuming malice or a “(derogatory)” sentiment that doesn’t have to be there. retcons aren’t evil. they aren’t inherently bad writing! any time in serialized fiction where you think X happened, and in a later story learn that secretly Y also happened, or that actually Z is what really happened? that’s a retcon!
and what we were originally told about shanks and buggy’s history is thus:
they were apprentices on a pirate ship
they fought all the time, over silly things and over philosophical differences (re: what being a pirate is all about)
buggy found a map and pretended to eat a devil fruit in order to steal away with both items for personal gain
shanks accidentally cost him both
despite their differences, shanks dove without hesitation into the ocean to save him
that’s it. no roger, no laugh tale, not even their split at roguetown, let alone the reason for that split. now, whether you consider all of these elements retcons or just gradually revealed backstory is a personal preference thing. (some folks get real strict about their definitions.) but one of them is definitely, unambiguously a retcon.
look at shanks’ conversation with whitebeard in chapter 434. shanks’ flashback in that chapter is just one panel, showing two lines of dialogue from the day they went separate ways.
Tumblr media
it’s pretty straightforward. shanks asks, buggy refuses, insulting him at the same time. about what you’d expect, given what we already knew about their history.
but then, 650 chapters later…
Tumblr media
…that moment is revisited from buggy’s point of view, and it turns out things were not as they seemed. buggy wasn’t just butting heads with shanks, he furiously rejected shanks because shanks changed his mind about his (their) dream!
chapter 1082’s flashback is a textbook retcon of the chapter 434 flashback. it provides us with new details that totally recontextualize that moment for us.
(whether this twist was Intended All Along is, imo, irrelevant. a story element revealed at a much later date that changes how we see the original scene(s) is the essence of a retcon.)

does anyone else find it fucked up that moon's friends protect themselves from her with the skyfire at the end of moon rising?
#wings of fire#moonwatcher#look okay i've been slowly rereading the series on and off again bc one of my friends is getting into the series#so correct me where i'm wrong in asking why kinkajou feels entitled for moon to disclaim she's a telepath and seer upon first meeting her#when the news that nightwings don't have powers anymore and that they manipulated the entire sandwing succession war conflict#for their own gain went PUBLIC so nightwings are a hated tribe#nevermind the fact that moon feels like an outcast among her tribe because she hatched off of the volcano and never had to suffer#though it's sweet that her mother cares for her and worries about her she still calls moon her 'weird little diamond'#and impresses upon her 'secret hidden safe' which is basically wof's conceal don't feel#when was moon supposed to feel safe enough in disclosing her power she's hated FOR having and hated for NOT having#do you (general) think she's in ANY position to advertise she's the tribe's ONLY true seer and telepath in generations safely?#'i get what kinkajou means but it feels almost like having to disclaim your trans or disabled. Is a bit fucked' is what my friend said#it's the same fucking thing as 'i'm losing the person i once knew' but perhaps not in those words and not nearly as harshly#i know kinkajou comes around to moon eventually and they remain friends. but there's something REALLY fucked about it imo#same friend pointed out there's a queerness to this which i will 100% agree on like it stings on a personal level#like. look i still like the series but man reading it critically and interacting with it in a more adult lens#is definitely an action i am doing right now.#i think i'm still correct in saying darkstalker was a child. evil is not created in a vacuum. hatred is taught not inherent.#it does not excuse him from the evil he did commit. but he was a child. he was a FUCKING ABUSED CHILD. augh. (quietly losing my mind)#rex rambles

They drifted into the blackness for another day, then two. Still the sea did not appear.
Aelin was sleeping, a dreamless, heavy slumber, when a strong hand clasped her shoulder. "Look," Rowan whispered, his breath brushing her ear.
She opened her eyes to pale light. Not the ocean, she realized as she sat up, the others rousing, undoubtedly at Rowan's word.
Overhead, clinging to the cavern ceiling as if they were stars trapped beneath the rock, small blue lights glowed.
Glowworms, like those in the lantern Thousands of them, made infinite by the reflection in the black water. Stars above and below.
From the corner of her eye, Aelin glimpsed Elide press a hand to her chest. A sea of stars—that's what the cave had become.
Beauty. There was still beauty in this world.
Stars could still glow, still burn bright, even buried under the earth.
Aelin breathed in the cool cave air, the blue light. Let it flow through her.
Rattle the stars. She'd promised to do that.
The emerald on her marriage band glistened with its own fire.
Beauty remained—and she would fight for it. Needed to fight.
It was a constant thrum in her blood, her bones. Right alongside the power that she shoved down deep and dismissed with each breath. Fight—one last time.
She'd escaped so she might do it. Would think of all those still defying Morath, defying Maeve, while she trained. She wouldn't hesitate. Didn't dare to pause. She'd make this time count. In every way possible.
Aelin could have sworn the living stars overhead sang, a celestial choir that floated through the caves.
A star-song carried along the river current, running beside them, for the last miles to the sea.

Dean felt free in Purgatory because he could kill without remorse. Dean’s not bi, he’s a killer, as he freely admits multiple times.
As you said, this show ain’t deep. It tells you what it means. Anviliciously at times.
I love that! Anviliciously, lol! And yes, it's so true. What you see is what you get.

After the disappointment that was The Box of Delights (book), back to The Hidden Land by Pamela Dean, and my goodness, the plotting and stakes of this trilogy go so hard. Pamela Dean really said I'm going to make a series for young readers GUARANTEED to hold up when adults go back for a reread

Fe3h au : Hidden manakete - Little helps
- Annette often asks Ashe to carry her as he flying around when there's a cleaning task ( so that's Annette could reach the higher places or to the roof to see the scenary).
- Caspar training so hard to transform ( without using dragon stone cause he doesn't know how to use it yet ) but only Claws , Teeth or Tails are visible, he can't exactly transform into fully form yet. And Linhardt always cheer him up ( so he could study him and also he doesn't like to see Caspar feeling down )
- Ignatz often see Marianne talks to animal and Dorte and since he could understand and talk to the animal. Sometime Ignatz said those animals enjoy her conversation ( which both surprised and impressed Marianne)
- Even Constance doesn't ask, Balthus likes to spread his wing to give her a shelter so that she wouldn't suffer her low-self esteem ego. ( if he see that it pain her or she is in danger ) Also Let her ride his back in his dragon form ( but if Balthus is too hungry he won't able to stay in his dragon from for too long and reverted back, nearly making her falling down with him able to catching her before she clashed the ground)

This is relentless.
The Oda members are now scared watching this. Seeing Hayato overwhelming with just two fingers . What the hell is Yuuji Itadori? This guy is a monster!
Iku gritted his teeth, "This guy....how the hell is he doing this?"
"I think some sort of magic!" Moudo asked. "I mean he's putting magic at the tip of fingers. Plus, it remind me of some anime! What is it? It seems familar!"
Torahito watches.
----
"Hayato is now being overwhelming again and no counterattack this time. Yuuji has him by the ropes with his two-finger strikes. Seriously...this is like watching an anime fight!" Shukaku said. Hayato feels getting weaker after each hit. He tries to attack with some wind attack but nothing. It's like something is cut off or something is going wrong.
"Gak! Ugh!" Hayato said as he tries to endure but everything hurts! The tree he lay against starts to break.
----
Daichi grins, "That it is! Naruto is a good study. In a way, their power system is similar to ours since we're talking about charkas and cursed energy. Different but similar since power sources come from us! Plus, it involves martial arts as well. That's why the Hyuga Clan's Gentle Fist is inspired by real martial arts which is Baguazhang!"
Miko and Yuria were amazed by this as they continued to listen.
"Bagauzhang is a martial arts technique, usually made up of circular movements, allowing the practitioner a wider range of motion and full use of momentum. So it's perfect for Yuuji no doubt if you want to deal internal damage with taps and just using two fingers. It's a great pairing with Yuji's Divergent Fist, the Gentle Fist?"
"Gentle Fist?!" The girls exclaimed. To them, that isn't gentle!
"Gentle Fist inflicts internal damage through attacking the body's Charka Pathway System but in this case, it focuses on joints and organs., mostly the functions that help Hayato to generate his wind. It can increase the power or disrupt his charka, his energy or maybe cursed energy."
"Huh? Who knew reading comic books helps." Maki snickered. "So you're saying...Hayato is going to feel a lot more pain and he won't do anything about it since he can't generate wind due to the internal damage."
Taz blinks at this new information. Kinie Ger whistled at the information 'No doubt, these hits will really knock that weasel out! Impressive where the little tiger comes up."
Little tiger? Oh!
"Yes, it seems like our Yuuji is a strong tiger in his own right!" Kinie Ger laughed. It seems the King will be pleased or rather thrilled seeing his vessel delivering a relentless beatdown on someone.
Seeing this, Yuji deflects the attack but hits him even harder! He was not going to let up. He was hitting him so hard the hits were pressing Hayato against the tree bark cracking it.
~~~~~~~
"W..wow, where did he learn that!?" Nobara said shocked.
"..H..Hold on, that looks familiar....where did I see this before.." she mutters to herself trying to remember. Yuria was seeing this before remembering.
"You know, that looks like something from that one manga we found..uhhh what was it called Naruto? It looks like that one attack from that one clan where they strike using their fingers." she said.
"..You mean the Hyuga clan?" Yuria said.
"Y..Yeah that!" she said watching the screen. Did Yuji take up a idea from that one manga and made it into something of his own?
Scott Pilgrim is, I think, the best example I can think of for establishing a setting's Nonsense Limit. The setting's Nonsense Limit isn't quite "How high-fantasy is this". It's mostly a question of presentation, to what degree does the audience feel that they know the rules the world operates by, such that they are primed to accept a random new element being introduced. A setting with a Nonsense Limit of 0 is, like, an everyday story. Something larger than life, but theoretically taking place in our world, like your standard spy thriller action movie has a limit of 1. Some sort of hidden world urban fantasy with wizards and stuff operating in secret has a nonsense limit around 3 or 4. A Superhero setting, presenting an alternate version of our world, is a 5 or 6. High fantasy comes in around a 7 or so, "Oh yeah, Wizards exist and they can do crazy stuff" is pretty commonly accepted. Scott Pilgrim comes in at a 10. If you read the Scott Pilgrim book, it starts off looking like a purely mundane slice of life. The first hint at the fantastical is Ramona appearing repeatedly in Scott's Dreams, and then later showing up in real life. When we finally get an explanation, it's this:
Tumblr media
Apparently Subspace Highways are a thing? And they go through people's heads? And Ramona treats this like it's obscure, but not secret knowledge. Ramona doesn't think she's doing anything weird here. At this point, it's not clear if Scott is accepting Ramona's explanation or not, things kind of move on as mundane as ever until their Date, when Ramona takes Scott through subspace, and he doesn't act like his world was just blown open or anything, although I guess that could have been a metaphor. there's a couple other moments, but everything with Ramona could be a metaphor, or Scott not recognizing what's going on. Maybe Ramona is uniquely fantastical in this otherwise normal world. And then, this happens
Tumblr media
Suddenly, a fantastical element (A shitty local indie band finishing their set with a song that knocks out most of the audience) is introduced unrelated to Ramona, and undeniably literal. We see the crowd knocked out by Crash and The Boys. but the story doesn't linger on the implications of that, the whole point of that sequence is to raise the Nonsense Level, such that you accept it when This happens
Tumblr media
Matthew Patel comes flying down onto the stage, Scott, who until this point is presented as a terrible person and a loser, but otherwise is extremely ordinary, proceeds to flawlessly block and counter him before doing a 64-hit air juggle combo. Scott's friends treat this like Scott is showing off a mildly interesting party trick, like being really good at darts. The establish that Scott is the "Best Fighter in the Province", not only are street-fighter battles a thing, Scott is Very Good at it, but they're so unimportant that being the best fighter in the province doesn't make Scott NOT a loser. So when Matthew Patel shows off his magic powers and then explodes into a pile of coins, we've established "Oh, this is how silly the setting gets". It's not about establishing the RULES of the setting so much as it is about establishing a lack of rules. Scott's skill at street-fighter battles doesn't translate to any sort of social prestige. Ramona can access Subspace Highways and she uses it to do a basic delivery job. It doesn't make sense and it's clear that it's not supposed to. So later on, when Todd Ingram starts throwing around telekinesis, and the explanation we're given is "He's a Vegan" , you're already so primed by the mixture of weirdness and mundanity that rather than trying to incorporate this new knowledge into any sort of coherent setting ruleset, you just go "Ah, yeah, Vegans".
