Hey there, friend!! I was wondering if you could give me any advice on writing pirates and kingpin type characters? Im trying to write a love story about this lesbian pirate falling in love with a kingpins daughter, but her mission is to carry out her late captains legacy - which is to make sure both him and his daughter are dead (i hope that makes sense 😭)
Writing Notes: Pirates
The word "pirate" typically conjures up images of a/an:
Slightly comical seaborne ruffian
Parrot perched on the shoulder
Peg leg
Bandana
Eye patch
Gold teeth
Skull and crossbones flag
This comes from a century or more of cartoonish depictions of pirates in Peter Pan, Treasure Island and The Pirates of the Caribbean.
Pirate - a robber who travels by water. Though most pirates targeted ships, some also launched attacks on coastal towns.
We often think of pirates as swashbuckling and daring or evil and brutish, but in actual fact most of them were ordinary people who had been forced to turn to criminal activity to make ends meet.
Nowadays these sanitized pirates are used to sell everything from rum to home insurance. The pirate has become an instantly recognizable symbol whose meaning is far removed from its dark and sinister origins.
The term ‘pirate’ has been changed over the years.
A ‘privateer’ was a government-sanctioned pirate who did not attack his own people.
The French called these people ‘corsairs’, although even this term became associated with Mediterranean ‘pirates’ instead of ‘privateers’.
A ‘buccaneer’ was a 17th-century raider who preyed on the Spanish in the Caribbean, while a
‘filibuster’ (or ‘freebooter’) was simply a French word for a ‘buccaneer’.
As for ‘swashbuckler’, the term meant a 16th-century brigand, or a 17th-century swordsman, but in the 20th century it was adopted by the writers of pirate fiction, and then by Hollywood. In the piratical heyday most of these terms were never used the way they are today.
Finally, there were ‘pirates’. The dictionary specifies that a ‘pirate’ is someone who robs from others at sea, and who acts beyond the law. Usually, they attacked whatever ships they came across, regardless of nationality.
Sometimes, though, these ‘pirates’ themselves crossed the line from one category to another.
HISTORY OF PIRACY
Spans the time of the Egyptian pharaohs to the present day. The real "heyday" of piracy falls neatly into two halves:
The colourful era of the 17th-century buccaneers who preyed on the Spanish Main – men like Henry Morgan or the bloodthirsty François L’Olonnais.
The ‘Golden Age of Piracy’. The phrase was first coined by the creators of pirate fiction rather than by people who experienced piracy for themselves. There was nothing golden or romantic about the real thing. Still, the term serves as a useful historical shorthand for a time when some of the best-known pirates in history were sailing the world’s oceans in search of prey. This was the brief but heady period in the early 18th century when the likes of Blackbeard, Black Bart and Charles Vane roamed the seas.
This early 18th-century French slave ship is typical of the slavers that were often captured by pirates, and sometimes converted into pirate vessels themselves. They had a reputation for being fast, an important feature for ships engaged in transporting a human cargo across the Atlantic.
Pirate ships usually carried far more crew than ordinary ships of a similar size.
This meant they could easily outnumber their victims.
Pirates altered their ships so that they could carry far more cannon than merchant ships of the same size.
Stories about pirate brutality meant that many of the most famous pirates had a terrifying reputation, and they advertised this by flying various gruesome flags including the 'Jolly Roger' with its picture of skull and crossbones.
All these things together meant that victims often surrendered very quickly. Sometimes there was no fighting at all.
It's likely that most victims of pirates were just thrown overboard rather than being made to ‘walk the plank’.
FEMALE PIRATES
The capture of the two female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, in 1720 provoked the outrage of a society where women were simply not supposed to become seamen, or pirates, or fight. As a result, the pair became some of the best-known pirates of the ‘Golden Age’.
In this 19th-century illustration, Mary Read, having vanquished a fellow pirate in a duel, exposes her breast to reveal to her dying adversary that he was shot by a woman. After their capture it was said that she and Anne Bonny put up more of a fight than all the rest of Rackam’s pirate crew.
While this depiction of Anne Bonny is probably fairly accurate – she wears the standard clothing of a sailor from this period – the artist felt obliged to emphasise her gender by giving her a low-cut shirt.
Like the depiction of Anne Bonny by the same artist, Mary Read is shown wearing the outfit of a European sailor from the period. A contemporary said of the two women that they ‘wore men’s jackets and long trousers, and handkerchiefs tied about their heads’.
A lot of what is known about pirates is not true, and a lot of what is true is not known.
Pirates could also be civil, neighborly, and law-abiding.
One reason piracy was often an act or a phase, and not a way of life, was simply because humans have not evolved to live on the sea. The sea is a hostile place, offering few of the pleasures of terrestrial society.
The expansion of commercial trade, particularly the slave trade, cemented a colonial social order increasingly threatened by instability at sea and less tolerant of social mobility on land. This change in attitudes led to the period we call the “War on Pirates”—roughly 1716 to 1726—and the advent of sea marauders who, with little hope of ever resettling on land, attacked their own nation.
Some Pirate-Related Tropes - you could use to help guide you write your own character.
Writing Notes: Kingpin
A character trope also referred to as "Big Bad", specifically a crime boss (usually a drug lord).
A character with evil plans (some popular examples of "evil plans").
"The Don"
A similar character trope.
The patriarch of a crime family — most often the mafia.
He is shrewd, ruthless, and very dangerous to cross.
Often he will hold to an arcane code of honor, which is perhaps incomprehensible to non-mobsters.
He will be very protective of his family and he will ensure that his dear little girl wants for nothing, all while maintaining the illusion of morality.
Read or watch media that depict this trope to help guide you write your own character, such as:
Vito and Michael Corleone in The Godfather.
Batman's The Penguin fills this role in Gotham City, having retired from committing crimes personally — for the most part.
Mr. Big from Zootopia is Tundratown's most notorious crime boss (right down to being a parody of Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone), despite being a diminutive arctic shrew. Judy is lucky enough to get in his good graces by saving his daughter's life.

Manila Galleon
The Manila Galleons were Spanish treasure ships which transported precious goods like silk, spices, and porcelain from Manila in the Philippines to Acapulco, Mexico, between 1565 and 1815. The Atlantic treasure fleets then shipped some of these goods – along with silver, gold, and other precious materials extracted from the Americas – on to Spain. The Manila galleons, meanwhile, returned to the Philippines each year loaded with silver to buy more goods for the next trip. Manila galleons going in either direction were a floating Aladdin's cave of treasures and so they tempted many a pirate and privateer but, such was their armament, only four were ever captured at sea.
The Spanish Empire
In the 16th century, two European powers were colonising the globe. The 1529 treaty of Zaragoça (Saragosa) between Portugal and Spain extended the astonishing division of the world these two nations had previously established in the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494. The Zaragoça treaty confirmed Portugal's claim over the Spice Islands while Spain was given the Philippines. From 1565, galleon ships were used to transport trade goods, gold, and silver accumulated at Manila from across Asia to the Americas and then to Spain.
Unlike other ships, such as those of the Portuguese Empire which used the Cape of Good Hope trade route around the tip of southern Africa, the Spanish preferred to send their ships eastwards to the Americas. The one, or more rarely two, annual Manila galleons arrived at Acapulco on the Pacific coast of what is today Mexico and which was then part of the Spanish Empire in the Americas, the Spanish Main. Setting off from Manila in the Philippines, these ships became known as the Manila galleons to the British, although the Spanish themselves called them the naos de China or 'Chinese ships'. Almost all Spanish galleons operating in the Pacific were built in the Philippines, a requirement enforced by law from 1679, and they were funded and owned by the Spanish Crown.

Is there anywhere in Taiwan you would recommend visiting that's not on all the must-see lists?
I had a look at some must-see lists so I could make a well-informed answer, and I have to admit I haven't even been to all the places listed! One of these days I'll make it to Alishan 阿里山 and ride that extremely early train... To be honest, I think most must-see things are on there for a reason, and I do bring people who visit me to go see them, and have a good time at it myself. I feel "not on the list" recommendations can be approached from two perspectives: either you've already exhausted the list and are looking for more things to do that align with your personal niche interests, or you're a tourist with a shorter time frame willing to exert the energy to get somewhere a bit more difficult.
For the latter, while it's still on some lists, I did enjoy Lukang 鹿港 a lot, if you don't have a private vehicle (which I do not) it does not have a train station and thus requires more public transport connections than usual. The historic small town experience is worth it though. My other recommendation is Lanyu 蘭嶼, the issue here being that one must either fly or take a ferry (my friend and I took a ferry from Kenting 墾丁 the first day it reopened after being repeatedly postponed due to bad weather, I do NOT recommend this). It rained almost the whole time (we scootered around anyways), and there was approximately one restaurant open but it was my first time going to one of the outlying islands so it made an impression on me. I've heard tell Penghu 澎湖 is possibly a better choice if you had to pick one. I've never heard anyone talk about going to Matsu 馬祖列島 except a woman I met in a bar once who said there's a ten hour ferry from Keelung 基隆, so that could be an adventure (now I'm just talking about places I want to go, hah). Outlying islands aside, there are a lot of beautiful mountains that require planning and permits and more knee strain than has ever appealed to me, so if you're interested in that kind of hard-to-get-to I unfortunately cannot help with specifics (but it's something to look into).
If you fall into the first category and are looking for more things to see after you feel like you've seen it all, I will hope ardently that you are also into reading in Chinese and recommend you a book 小小站.停一下:最悠哉的37個鐵道私景點 by 段慧琳 about small/remote/obscure train stations around Taiwan. So far I've only been to a few on the north and east coasts (Jinlun 金崙, Dali 大里, Badouzi 八斗子... I've been to Wai'ao 外奧 too but is that really obscure?) but it's something I've found rewarding. (I'd like to go to the other 奧s, 蘇澳, 東奧, and 南澳 too). I don't think there is anything particularly mind-blowing per se in any of these places, but if you find joy in poking around by the sea (often very scenic with the adjacent mountains), having a chat with local people, and looking out train windows, then it's a thing to do.
I will say I have spent a lot more time in the general Taipei area than anywhere else, although my recommendations skew towards "quiet places you can get to without a private vehicle", like my ever-beloved Waziwei 挖子尾, although who can say if it'll still be quiet after they finish the bridge, alas. If you have some more specific interests re: Taipei, do ask!
#often the romanized spelling of taiwanese names does NOT match with the hanyu pinyin#so i feel i should put the 漢字 too#for anyone who wants to see what's actually going on there#anon#ask#answer

Excerpt from Dr. Baltan’s Research Log
Day 15
Everything is in place. I’ve loaded the back of my rental van with the modified gurneys I had designed specially for this project. It’s a bit of a tight fit, but their time spent in the van will be short; I intend to move the creatures onto the ship as soon as possible.
I toyed with the idea of studying them here, but my private lab back on the mainland far outclasses the research center I have access to on this island. I have instructed my assistant Layla to prepare for the arrival of two specimens, and so far she is the only person besides myself who knows the true nature of my research. I did think about soliciting the assistance of some of the locals for the capture and transport of the specimens, but I have decided against it. The fewer individuals who know of these creatures' existence, the better.
Besides, the locals have already helped me plenty. Their practice of leaving offerings near the cove has provided me the perfect opportunity to make my move. This morning a villager left a basket of mangoes in the forest, and I have laced the fruit with tranquilizer. I have made my best estimate as to the proper dosage, though without intricate knowledge of their metabolisms, there is no real way of knowing how they will react to the drugs. I can only hope they are effective long enough for me to neutralize the specimens and get them into the van.
If previous patterns of behavior hold, then the male will find the food, eat a small amount of it himself, and then bring the majority of it to his mate. Hopefully, the tranquilizer will act slowly enough for the male to share the food with the female before succumbing to its effects. If it affects him immediately, then I will have to collect him on his own and devise another way of trapping the female. I of course would like to study them both, but if I could only take one, I would choose the female every time. The opportunities that having a captive-born specimen would provide are simply too great to pass up. However, I worry about attempting to capture the female without neutralizing the male first. It’s possible that he will grow aggressive in an attempt to protect his mate and young, and as I am operating solo, that is a situation I’d rather avoid. I have considered all the possibilities, and have determined that this is the best course of action, regardless of the risk. All I have to do now is sit back and wait to see whether my labor shall bear fruit.
.
Day 16
I can scarcely believe it, but I have been successful! I, Dr. Eric Balton, am in possession of not one, but TWO live and healthy mer specimens. I am the first scientist in recorded memory to have any direct contact with a mer, not to mention the first to have a living shifter in a laboratory environment. My research has barely begun, and I have already cemented my place in history! But I mustn't get ahead of myself.
The tranquilizer worked perfectly, and once both mer were unconscious it was easy enough to strap them down onto the gurneys and load those in the van. As far as port authorities are concerned, I am transporting injured dolphins, and I was able to secure privacy while loading them onboard the ship in the name of protecting their health and safety. As far as I’m aware, no one saw that the “dolphins” are actually two of the most valuable live specimens ever collected.
I have taken readings and samples of the water from the cove and sent Layla the data so that she may prepare the research tanks in my lab. While their usual habitat is unknown, they chose these waters to make their nest and have their young in, and I intend to replicate those conditions for them exactly.
As for their transport, I have opted to use the dry method. If they truly were dolphins or some other similar aquatic mammal, I would be concerned for their safety being out of water for such a length of time, but as they have demonstrated ample ability to not only breath air but literally walk on land with legs, I have good reason to believe that dry transport, even over a few weeks, will be quite safe.
Dry transport will also allow me to leave them strapped down on the gurneys. If placed unrestrained in a tank of water, they may be able to use their unique dexterity to attempt escape of some kind, which could result in injury. Better to keep them immobile until they arrive at their permanent home. This will also allow me to better monitor the female’s gestation while we are in transit. Judging by human standards, she doesn’t look far enough along to give birth during the actual voyage, though of course I must be prepared in case she does.
I cannot allow my preconceived ideas about what is normal for humans to cloud my judgment on this project. I must treat these specimens as completely undiscovered animals, and make hypotheses based solely on the data I collect. Now that we are underway, I can begin my preliminary examinations of the creatures undisturbed. I can hardly believe that this moment has finally come!

Author's Notes: So I do just wanna say that not every chapter of this will be research logs! The next chapter will be from our mers' point of views (I have some character designs for them here if you wanna see) and I plan for this story to use a mix of both the mers' actual point of view and Dr. Baltan's research notes to show both perspectives on the events of the plot. Next chapter we meet Meri and Kae, so get ready for that! Thanks for reading <3

Writeblr Introduction
Hello! It's time to properly introduce myself to the writeblr community. You can call me KC if you want. I am a full time specialist as my local library system and I have a Master of Letters in Fantasy Literature from the University of Glasgow. For now, this is my writing website, until an agent/editor tells me to build a WordPress or something. (I honestly hate traditional blogs. Weird quirk, don't know why. Also, links are underlined). If I get tagged in things, I will do my best to respond to them and share it forward.
Published Works- This includes my self-published 5e adventure and the two anthologies that include my stories. It will be updated and kept current as this develops.
Works in Progress- The main projects that I've been bouncing back and forth between. Most are world-oriented, meaning they have numerous interconnected stories within a single world.
Where to Find Me: Some of my other internet homes, including World Anvil, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
More Details Below...
Here are some more details on the different things I linked above:
Published Works
"Sofia Serrento's Flying Circus and the Sky Pirates of Shanghai" is published in the anthology Hell Hath No Fury: New Pulp Heroines. It's a New Pulp story set in 1930s Shanghai, featuring Sofia Serrento and her all-women aero-circus/spy ring.
"The God-Kings' Tomb" is published in the anthology Futures That Never Were, an anthology of original sword & planet short stories. This one is in the same universe as Sofia Serrento, so the two stories are... technically connected. This one involves an SOE advisor specializing in the occult and arcane who finds herself transported to a different planet in the solar system.
Siege at Oasis Butte is a standalone 5e adventure published through the DM's Guild featuring a desert town under siege by mercenaries with mysterious motivations.
Works In Progress
Iron Horizons/The Pilgrim's War: This was a NaNoWriMo novel from a few years ago that has since... grown. I've been calling it a Dieselpunk space opera, but alternate history/retrofuturism is also apt. Basically, humanity rapidly developed space flight in the 1920s based on some MacGuffin physics nonsense leading to the second world war happening on a solar system level using extensions of 30s aesthetics. Pilgrim's War is set roughly 400 years after that war ended, with the extensive resources from space maintaining the colonialist expansion into the stars and focuses primarily on a sort of... War of 1812 situation between a well-established independent government and their recently independent colonies.
The Centurion Club: My published short stories are set in this universe. Ironically, this is also an alternate history. It's the primary setting for my "New Pulp" fiction. It's mostly short fiction, with some longer projects in the brainstorming phase, and it focuses on the fictionalized city of Weymouth in New England and the members of the illustrious Centurion Club, a scientific society for explorers, scientists, freedom fighters, reformers, and others who push the boundaries of human society. Beyond that, a sword and sorcery setting in Mesolithic Doggerland, some privateers/mercenaries in the 17th/18th centuries, and a contemporary CGIS special agent in a Clive Cussler vein, plus a great many vigilantes and adventurers in the 1930s.
Sigil of the Sea King: A heroic fantasy which, also a NaNoWriMo project, is self-indulgence, where I throw together everything I've really enjoyed but could never fit in elsewhere. So there's an island kingdom ruled by merchant sea princes, flying air whales, nomads whose wagons are pulled by sails, cozy Forest Folk, a lone surviving heir to a crumbled kingdom, and lots of influence from Georgian/Armenian/Caucasian culture, mythology, and history.
Flintlock Fantasy: This is just the earliest stages of development, mostly just simmering, but somewhat Napoleonic secondary fantasy world. The main character is an elf named Lark, and I think she's sort of a janissary-type sent to work covertly in a border region between two empires. Random, Personal Information
You may have once known me as NovelistSpaceRanger, but that was like 8 years ago.
I'm a certified open-water diver and I'm working on my advanced open-water diver later this summer.
Also a whitewater rafter, backpacker, mediocre yogi, and rock climber.
I've been to 14 countries and spent a year and a half living in Europe.

Can you do the same thing but for the dc hero kids? Like they just had their backstories?
Marc- Myzan'r
Marc came to Earth as Myzan'r, a Tamaranean prince being transported by Gordanians, in exile as a slave to the Citadel
Through the use of his immense Tamaranean superhuman strength and incredible agility, he broke free from the brig aboard a Gordanian ship and landed in Paris
There, he went on a rampage trying to remove his handcuffs, screaming in Tamaranean until Zoé helped get them off of him… Then he kissed her and started speaking French
He's been living on Earth with his adoptive mothers and younger brother ever since
Aurore- Whirlpool
Aurore was once a normal “human” girl who lived by the water with her family
One thing about Aurore is that she has the ability to breathe water, which made her quite popular at school. She was captain of water-based sports and always got invited to pool parties
However, one day at a beach bonfire party, Aurore suddenly swam further out into sea and dived down in the water, soon discovering that she could communicate with sea life and that she is from Atlantis
She soon decided to use her abilities to defend Earth's oceans
Mireille- Echo
Mireille was born with an inborn metahuman ability, granting her a super-sonic scream that could shatter the thickest of glass
After nearly deafening half of the school, her parents had her live in Gotham with some other metahumans for a year so she could have better control over her powers
When Mireille returned, it worked like a charm, and now they could control the frequency of their scream
Théo couldn’t be prouder of his sister
Cosette- Voltage
Cosette was just an average kid that no one understood... Then she somehow got roped by a school bully into joining some gang, and they got into a turf war at an old factory
A round went off, and then suddenly, there was an explosion. A strange gas spread throughout the area, and Cosette passed out from exposure
When it woke up, Cosette found that they now had electromagnetic powers!... And a bunch of other people in the city now had their own powers, and most of them were villains
They took up the mantle as a hero and used their new powers to fight crime
Zoé- Rouge ("I refuse to have the same hero name as Dick!")
Zoé was just your typical girl, born into a wealthy family in New York as the product of her terrible mother's affair. Her mother's negligence during one fashion show in New Jersey caused her to wander off and come across several villains
Because she's a rich kid, they decide to kidnap her for a ransom, only for Batman to swoop in and save her.
He takes one look at her and says, "Screw it. She's mine now." He just shares custody with Morgan
Ever since that day, Zoé's grown up with several older brothers and a few sisters who take her out for ice cream, teach her how to street fight, and occasionally prank Audrey
Ismael- Krypto-Kid
Born on the planet of Krypton with the birthname, Mal-Sel, as a baby, Ismael's parents sent him to Earth in a small spaceship shortly before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm
His ship soon landed in the backyard of Fazli and Alaya Prisk
Fazli immediately adored him, while Alaya loathed the fact that the ship ruined the backyard
Overtime, Ismael began to show signs of his powers
Reshma- Sapphire Beetle
While on a family trip to their private island, Reshma came into contact with a strange-looking scarab
When she touched it, it attached to her, grafting onto her spine, and gave her a powerful exoskeleton armor
Reshma had little to almost no control over her new powers, but slowly asserts herself. When she’s in danger, the suit activates, crawling out on to her back
When the danger passes, the scarab deactivates, and it hurts like hell
Simon- Speedster
Simon was once a normal but nerdy coffee-loving student who was occasionally chased by bullies
One night, as he was running home, trying to escape his usual tormentors, he was struck by a lightning bolt, temporarily knocking him out
When he wakes up the next morning, Simon later finds that he can run at super-human speeds and possesses equally enhanced reflexes, senses, and healing
Of course, he gets a little payback
Denise- Wonderer
On Paradise Island, Queen Hippolyta was sculpting a child from clay whom she named Denise
Denise often stood out as the only “non-female” of the tribe of Amazons, but they still respected them for their strength and power
After meeting a World War II pilot who crash lands on the island, Denise accompanies him back to his home and assists in fighting off Nazi forces
They ultimately decided to stay amongs humans, defending them from any threats, living with several families over the years, and eventually finding a boyfriend
Lacey- Wildmorph
When her brothers were three and she was eleven, their parents took them on a family trip to Brazil
It was all fun and stuff until they went into the jungle and Lacey was bitten by a monkey with mint green fur. Her parents were able to find a way to save her, but it turned her skin mint green, and she developed the ability to turn into any animal
Then while on a boating trip, there was an accident. Lacey and her brothers made it, but their parents didn’t
Their grandparents soon became their legal guardians
Jean- Spellbound
Jean Duparc is the daughter of famed magician/comedian Dejah Duparc
He started off as a young but successful stage illusionist himself before he discovered his true magical powers
After doing a dna test as part of a biology assignment for school, they soon discovered that they are of the Homo Magi race, a race of naturally magic-wielding humans
Ever since that, Jean’s been learning how to perform actual magic, and learns that he’s kinda OP

SUNDOWNING MY BELOVED ❤️ This is a fix-it for mwiii that I’ve been working on since November (help me.) Had to take a bit of a break from this one but we are so back baby. 24k words in and this is the longest story I’ve ever written. And it’s only 1/3 of the way done
Here is (quite a hefty chunk bc I’m weak) of the very beginning prologue! From Price’s pov, just like how the epilogue will be <3 Angst ahead—picking up right after…That scene. They think Soap is dead (no fear! He is not!)
John Price
London, England
21 November 2023 1800
He’s just lost two men.
After they defuse the bomb, it takes all but a second to realise it. Two pairs of eyes. One set stormy blue and…still laser focused. Even in death. The other set whiskey brown, huge and…scared. As if throughout all the unimaginable horrors in Simon Riley’s short life, this one is the worst those eyes have seen yet. It may very well be.
Simon had only just returned and now—
Now Ghost is going to shove him right back into that grave and never let him out again.
Because he might’ve been the one to physically pull himself out of the dirt and rot all those years ago, but Soap had been the one to truly set him free. Anyone could see it. Soap had been the one armed with the shocks that restarted Simon Riley’s heart. And now he’s gone. They’re both gone. Ripped away within the blink of a blue or brown eye.
And Price has only got his fucking self to blame.
So he calls it in. He tells Laswell one KIA, when he means two. She says the officers have just radioed her to confirm a clear entrance and exit. He fights himself not to look at the clean entrance and exit path through his own sergeant’s temples upon hearing those words.
She’s sending medevac down. About five minutes out. Not that they’ll need it for anything other than transporting John MacTavish’s dead fucking carcass out of here. Maybe three shock blankets, should they be so lucky. Not that he deserves the comfort at all.
Christ, there’s so much blood.
His mouth is full of cotton and his hands itch to kill. His body yearns to take a page out of Ghost’s book and fall to his knees just to feel the warm blood soak through his trousers.
But Kyle is pressing his lips together, trying not to let his face crumple, trying to be the perfect picture of composure. Trying to hold it together for what’s left of the team. Simon’s chest heaves with wheezing breaths that aren’t coming naturally like they should be, while stained gloves tremble over Soap’s chest.
And Price knows he does not have the luxury of falling apart right now.
No, that will have to wait until they’re back in Herefordshire. Base will hold the standard vigil, a ceremonious affair complete with bagpipes and candlelight for the youngest soldier to ever pass SAS selection. Later that night, he’ll have his own private wake in his office with the cheapest bottle of scotch, a good cigar and guilt thick enough to weaponise.
Actually.
Perhaps he will lose it sooner rather than later—in the form of cold-blooded revenge. He’s got the easiest target of a man in mind. Next best thing to Makarov himself.
The puddle of blood spreads to the toe of his boot. By the time the med team arrives, he is an island in a sea of red.
Ghost doesn’t break until the stretcher ready to load up Soap’s body is within sight. That is, predictably, what snips the final wire holding it all together.
Red wire.
#THANK YOU for asking about this I loooove sharing bits of this story#it’s been so hard not to start posting it as a wip before it’s finished HELPPP#ghostsoap#my writing#asks

Any planetary size and beyond giantess?
Origin of the Growth Goddess (Part 2)
This is the second part of this story.
Helena and Chase were on the run. They had escaped the city and were swimming across the ocean with Helena's massive body serving as their transportation.
The couple was trying to evade the private military of the company they used to work for, as well as the governments that wanted to capture them.
After a couple of days of travel, they found a secluded island, and once they landed, they immediately ate the fruits and and drank freshwater since they had been starving during the trip across sea. Afterwards, Chase tried to find shelter, while Helena went hunting for food.
To Chase's surprise, the island's wildlife was gigantic, which appeared somewhat normal-sized in comparison to Helena. With snakes as long as subway trains and wasps as big as helicopters.
As he was exploring the island, a massive boar emerged from a cave and started pursuing him. He tried to run, but the beast was too fast. Fortunately, Helena arrived just in time and wrestled with the boar, ultimately killing it.
They settled in the cave, cooked the boar, and enjoyed a meal. Chase couldn't help but wonder what caused the animals on the island to grow so big. That night, he chatted with Helena until they fell asleep. Chase used Helena's body as a bed to stay warm and the snuggled throughout the night.
The next day, Chase explored the island while Helena resumed her hunt for food. As he was exploring, he came across a normal-sized temple. He entered and managed to survive numerous traps. In the deepest chamber of the temple, he found an ancient stone statue of a goddess.
The statue said that a chosen woman would be granted its powers to change the world. The statue hummed with power, but before Chase could approach it, he heard several helicopters from the sky. The army had found them.
Chase ran outside to warn Helena, only to find her fighting soldiers and tanks from the beach, cruiser battleships firing cannons from the sea, and helicopters shooting from the sky. Chase nearly got shot while Helena's nigh invincible body was bombarded with heavy artillery.
He yelled at her to run back to the forest for cover, and she complied, carrying him in the process. Cannon fire blasted through the forest, setting the trees ablaze, while helicopters pursued them. The giant animals from the burning forest hindered the soldiers who were chasing them.
Helena's lover, Chase, led her to the temple and told her about the statue. But just as they were about to reach the temple, a cannon shot blasted Helena in the back, causing her to collapse over the temple, demolishing it with her body and dropping Chase in the process.
With Helena unconscious, soldiers rushing at their position, and helicopters swooping in for the kill, Chase desperately ran to the temple ruins and grabbed the statue. He rushed to Helena's side but was fatally shot in the process. With his last breath, he dropped the statue on Helena's open palm.
Helena's eyes shot open and glowed as soon as the statue transferred its powers over to her. She struggled to get up for a moment, but as soon as she did, she slowly rose higher and higher over the island. She was growing huge.
Her feet collided over trees and mountains, causing the earth to shake and decimate the armies. The quake sent tsunamis over the sea, engulfing the battleships. Her growing thighs eventually eclipsed the choppers, causing them to come crashing down from the impact of her legs.
Helena cried in anger over Chase's death, and her voice boomed across the planet, sending massive waves crashing against nearby beaches. She looked down to see that she was still growing, over hills and mountains, across the seas and oceans. She was becoming a goddess. As her head reached the clouds, people from across the world saw her ascent. From men fishing in boats to passengers of a plane flying over
Her every step sent waves of tsunamis that engulfed entire cities and earthquakes that triggered a dozen volcanoes. She was a walking calamity
She made it across the ocean in no more than two steps. Soon, she lied down on the greatest continent of Earth and allowed her massive, growing body to expand and eclipse the very cities of the planet.
She didnt stop until everyone was destroyed. Once the deed is done, she had grown big enough that the planet was merely the size of a basketball to her.
She jumped high and left Earth's gravitational pull and looked at the vast expanse of space. She realized that she could still breathe and that her powers were not simply limited to growing, but to creating as well.
She first creates a copy of Chase in the planet. She was pleased, but was disappointed to realize that he was oblivious of his former lover's presence in the sky above him, as if she was incorporeal or beyond his existence.
She had truly become a goddess. She mourned silently, but proceeded to recreate the planet with humans and cities again. But this time, she will alter fate a bit every now and then to grow women into giantesses should she see that their presence will fit her grand scheme, and that nobody will undergo the tragedy that she went through.
Now, Chase still wanders ignorantly, along with the rest of the recreated populace, of Helena's godly presence watching over him.

Welcome to the Sea of Gales
Inspired by the early 18th-century Caribbean with some deviations, this is a high-fantasy world covered mostly in ocean, known as the Sea of Gales, or in some more academic texts, the Windseas. Across the ocean are archipelagos of anchored and floating islands, with the main form of transportation being the ships that can traverse both the seas and skies.
The ships of the sea and sky are at the mercy of the winds, but are permitted to defy the gravity by the crystalline power of the Manoans. The crystals that call on this ancient magic are now somewhat of a rarity, and are primitive in their capabilities in comparison of the technology that was at the height of the Manoan civilization.
It is said once that the Manoan civilization came to dominate all other nations of the Sea of Gales, ruling from an archipelago that drifted through the clouds. It was said that with their powers, they could oversee all others, and their city of Limuria was greater than heaven itself. However, the story of what happened to Limuria is more of a mystery. All that is known is that something went wrong with the crystals, and the Islands of Manoa plummeted into the sea, to be buried forevermore.
Still, many descendants of the Manoans remain in the Sea of Gales, scattered in a diaspora across its archipelagos. As long as their people persists, so does a legend that Limuria can be found and recalled, and the great kingdom will take its place once again.
However, many have long forgotten Manoa in the face of more important players on the political stage: the Empire of Cartagena and Albion. Cartagena and Albion have been fighting over the Sea of Gales and the islands within for the last three-hundred years, mainly fighting through their navy and contracted privateers.

Pirate Punishments in the Golden Age of Piracy
Pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy (1690-1730) both dished out and received a wide range of imaginative punishments. Victims of piracy endured torture, floggings, and ceremonies of humiliation, but when brought to justice, the pirates were given such punishments as lengthy prison sentences, transportation to work in the deadly conditions of African mines, or public execution by hanging.
Punishments Between Pirates
Floggings
The use of a whip to dish out punishments was a common occurrence on ships of all kinds of the period. For pirates, the risk of bearing such treatment was much reduced since a captain rarely dared to use such methods on a crew that had probably turned pirate in the first place in order to escape such harsh features of a life at sea. A flogging was usually only decided upon as the form of punishment if the whole crew, or at least the majority, agreed that the man had broken one of the ship’s articles, that is the list of rules they swore to abide by. The man who dished out the flogging on a pirate vessel was the quartermaster. Floggings were given for such misdemeanours as bringing women on board, striking another man, or not keeping weapons in an efficient state of readiness.
If a mariner was flogged, then he was tied to the mast or a grating and lashed on his bare back with a cat-o’-nine-tails. This special kind of whip consisted of nine lengths of rope, each of which was around one-quarter of an inch in diameter (c. 6 mm) and up to 2 feet (c. 60 cm) long. Each of the nine lengths had three or more knots to make the whip’s bite even sharper - sometimes more knots were added for more severe crimes. During a flogging, the sailor often bit on a bullet so that he did not cry out and raise the ridicule of his crewmates. If he did call out with the pain, then his mates would thereafter describe him disdainfully as a 'nightingale'.
Keelhauling
To be keelhauled was just about the worst punishment a sailor could expect to be given short of death, and even here his chances of surviving the ordeal were no more than 50:50. The punishment involved tying a person with rope, throwing them overboard, and then dragging them either under the ship from one side to the other or along the entire length of the ship. Even if the victim escaped drowning, they would be severely cut and bruised from being dragged against the ship’s barnacle-encrusted hull.
Marooning
For mariners guilty of a serious crime like mutiny, theft, or cowardice, their punishment could be a delayed death sentence. The sailor was marooned, that is deposited on a remote island and given nothing but a keg of water and a pistol; sometimes they were even stripped naked. An alternative to leaving the person on land was to set them adrift in a small boat with no oars or a single oar. Fully aware that thirst and starvation were all they had to look forward to, some mariners asked to be shot straight away. For others, the gift of a pistol allowed them to end things before they went mad from the privations. The most famous mariner to be marooned was Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721) who was left on the Juan Fernández Islands in the Pacific in 1704. Another man to be marooned was Edward Low whose crew had had enough of his sadistic antics with friend and foe alike. The origin of the word 'maroon' is the Spanish term for an escaped slave, cimarrón, meaning wild or untamed.

On September 7th, 1978, British Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan confirmed that he would not be calling an early election, despite the precarious stability of his minority government.
"…The government must and will continue to carry out policies that are consistent, determined, that don’t chop or change and that brought about the present recovery in our fortunes…We can see the way ahead…"
Opposition Leader Margaret Thatcher was not best pleased, referring to the government as chickens and stating;
"…The real reason he isn’t having an election is because he thinks he'll lose…"
Even Liberal leader David Steel, whose party had propped up the government through the Lib-Lab Pact, wasn’t happy, stating that the country was due for change and that an election was the only way to breathe life into the four-year-old parliament.
Callaghan had succeeded Harold Wilson in tricky circumstances in 1976. Inflation had peaked at 26% and unemployment was heading toward 1.5 million, a devastating figure in the context of the time although it would more than double by the mid 1980s under the Tories. Callaghan was forced to make unpopular cuts in government spending to comply with terms set out by the International Monetary Fund, after a financial crisis precipitated by the plunging Pound had necessitated an emergency loan. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom, the balance of trade was improving on the back of growing revenue and production from North Sea Oil, which was expected to make the country self-sufficient by 1980.
In the autumn of 1978, the government proposed that trade unions moderate the following year’s pay claims to 5% as a key part of the ongoing fight against inflation, which was by then hovering at 8%. The unions, however, rejected any limits proposed by the Callaghan government and vowed to pursue their right to free and unrestrained collective bargaining. The first major employer to concede over and above the government’s proposed ceiling was Ford Motor Company, which granted an increase of 17% after an initial ambit claim of 25%.
That December, the government received an unwanted Christmas present, when a motion in the House of Commons was carried condemning;
"…the arbitrary use of economic sanctions against firms and workers who have negotiated pay settlements beyond a rigid limit which Parliament has not approved…"
The Civil Service unions, now isolated under government control while private sector companies were free to set their own wage negotiation benchmarks without risk of sanction, prepared for militant action. The ensuing Winter of Discontent strikes created shortages of a number of essential commodities. NHS hospitals, ambulance services, rubbish collection, schools and even funeral and burial services were caught up in transport and related stoppages that created nationwide chaos.
At one point 200 000 workers were temporarily laid off, and rubbish piled high in the streets. By the end of January 1979, the strike ended with employers conceding to almost all of the various unions’ demands.
Into this chaotic atmosphere returned the PM from a summit with US President Carter, French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing and the West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. The meeting had been held in the sunny Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe. Callaghan, looking relaxed and unconcerned according to some reports, rather unwisely stated,
"…I don’t think that other people in the world would share the view that there is mounting chaos…"
He was rewarded by the famous What Crisis? headline in The Sun.
With an election looming, the government and Trades Union Congress finally made an attempt to publicly reconcile. The new Concordat, issued in February 1979, spelled out guidelines for a new cooperative approach toward dispute resolution, called for restraint in wage demands and set a joint ambition for an inflation rate of below 5% by 1982. It promised more measured picketing and more liberal union control over workforces. Callaghan called this a great step forward, while the Confederation of British Industry, unsurprisingly, said it was too little, too late.
Opposition Leader, Margaret Thatcher, soon seized a golden opportunity to take command of the agenda. She steamed in with motion of no confidence against the government on March 28th, 1979. The motion was passed by one vote, the first such successful motion since 1924. The subsequent general election paved the way for 18 years of Tory government.
Following the inevitable election loss, Jim Callaghan stayed on as Opposition Leader until 1980 when he was succeeded by Michael Foot. He subsequently served in the Lords as Baron Callaghan of Cardiff and passed away in 2005, aged 92.

Front page of The New York Times, July 30, 1923.
After spending nearly the entire month of July 1923 in Alaska and Canada (the first sitting President to visit either location) as part of his “Voyage of Understanding” across the continent, President Warren G. Harding was forced to cancel stops in Oregon, Northern California, and Yosemite National Park when he fell ill in Vancouver and Seattle on July 26th and 27th.
From Seattle, Harding’s party, which included First Lady Florence Harding and several Cabinet members (including Commerce Secretary and future President Herbert Hoover), traveled directly to San Francisco. Despite his weakened condition, the President refused suggestions by his doctors and aides that he be transported via wheelchair from his special railcar, the Superb, to a waiting limousine. Upon arriving at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, reporters who briefly saw him said that Harding -- who was only 57 years old -- looked “old and worn.” As he and the First Lady headed to the limousine waiting for them on Market Street, someone snapped the last photograph ever taken of President Harding alive.
When the Presidential party had left Seattle and word first started to circulate that Harding was ill, White House doctors announced that the President was suffering from “ptomaine poisoning” and acute indigestion, “due to eating crabs or canned food.” While they decided to head directly to San Francisco, only the events of the next few days, including his planned trip to Yosemite, were canceled. But by the time the President arrived in the Bay Area, it was decided that Harding’s condition was more alarming than previously believed, and the White House scrapped all events scheduled for California, announcing shortly before midnight on Sunday, July 29th that “the President is reluctantly persuaded that it will be necessary to cancel his entire California program” and apologizing to the people of the state expecting to see him.
No further information about Harding’s condition was officially released at that time other than the fact that the President was expected to remain in San Francisco for the next two weeks to rest and recuperate, but according to the New York Times on Monday, July 30th:
Outside of this statement and the bulletin by [Brigadier General Charles] Sawyer, his personal physician, no other information was authorized. It is learned, however, that General Sawyer was apprehensive late this afternoon of a turn for the worse in the President’s condition. While he was hopeful that a good rest would overcome the violent attack of ptomaine poisoning from which the President is suffering, he was careful to make no predictions. By some of those in the Presidential party this attitude was attributed to professional overcaution, but events tonight appear to have justified General Sawyer’s course.
As this dispatch is written (at 5 A.M. New York time) members of the corridor on which the Presidential suite is situated in the Palace Hotel. All of them show signs of being anxious. The theory of the President’s friends is that acute indigestion has affected his heart action. The President is conscious and is much concerned over the serious turn his illness has taken.
Mrs. Harding is at the President’s bedside and is greatly helping him by her calm and cheering attitude. She expresses confidence that Dr. Sawyer will be able to bring Mr. Harding back to health.
Harding’s “Voyage of Understanding” had come to a sudden halt and his planned trip through California had been canceled, sidetracking numerous public engagements and likely eliminating Harding’s much anticipated private deep-sea fishing expedition with William Wrigley off of Catalina Island. Over 5 million people were expecting to listen to Harding deliver a major speech over the radio the next night about foreign policy and American participation in the International Court of Justice, but it would instead be published as he recuperated. As Warren Gamaliel Harding rested in Room 8064 on the 8th Floor of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on Monday, July 30th, his doctors were cautiously optimistic and First Lady Florence Harding was hopeful.
But the 57-year-old President of the United States had 72 hours to live.
