This curious critter is a worm like no other: The pigbutt worm
youtube
Bobbing along in ocean currents a half mile below the surface is a worm like no other. Our team first spotted the unusual pigbutt worm (Chaetopterus pugaporcinus) in 2001 and had a tough time determining how to categorize such a curious critter. Working closely with our collaborators, DNA analysis eventually confirmed we had encountered a new species of bristle worm that drifts through the midwater instead of living on the seafloor.
Over the last two decades, these worms have only been observed in Monterey Bay and a few near the Channel Islands off the southern California coast. This little worm is about the size of a hazelnut, and even using our high-resolution cameras, it took the eagle eyes of our expert biologists to spot these miniature orbs in the massive ocean. Our skilled submersible pilots were able to gently sample them and transport them back to the ship alive for detailed examination.
Chaetopterus pugaporcinus casts out a web of snot to capture bits of organic material called marine snow to eat. Mucus is a useful substance for snaring food in the deep sea where it may be sparse. Numerous other animals get their nutrition this way too. Animals of all shapes and sizes in the ocean perform an essential climate service by taking up excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and transporting it deep in the ocean. These assorted midwater mucous-feeders help repackage carbon to sink more rapidly to hungry seafloor communities.

Genuinely tired of ACOTAR's worldbuilding not being explored to its full potential so please enjoy my take on the geopolitical environment of Prythian and its Courts (extremely chaotic but I tried)
Long post ahead
The Spring Court
So much more than "a rolling green land." The Spring Court has been ruled by Tamlin's family for generations.
Millenia ago, a powerful beast born by the Cauldron roamed the South of the island. With the Mother's touch, legend says, the beast had become man—and the very first High Lord of Spring. Yes, it was nothing but a landscape of rolling green hills and forests on the horizon—at first. But that changed until the Beast's three sons grew into their power—and challenged their father for his land.
To appease his sons, the High Lord had split his land into three Territories, each to be governed by one of his children.
The First Territory spanned over the wilderness at the very south, from the lush forests of vibrant green, inhabited by Fae and humans alike, to the great wide sea at the island's border. Centuries later, after the War, the First Territory shrunk, limited by the power of the magical Wall. Now, it acts as the primary defence of the Spring Court from the Mortal Lands, and home to the less civilised, murderous Lesser Fae like the bogge. When they don't serve the High Lord at his Manor, the Spring Court's military resides in the First Territory.
The Second Territory initially was the small scrap of land at the West, as the High Lord's second son was the most greedy and as such, the least favourite of the Beast's children. Unfortunately for him, his greed was equal to his power, and it was the second son that had eventually defeated his father and brothers, ultimately taking his place as the Spring Court's rightful ruler. Over his rule, the Second Territory expanded from the West to the land's very centre. Today, it is home to most of Spring Court's residence, High and Lesser Fae alike. Due to its proximity to the prosperous Summer Court above, and the Kingdom of Hybern across the sea, the Second Territory thrives on marine trade. Most of its residence have found their occupation in the fishing industry.
The Third Territory was home to the High Lord and his youngest, favourite son. Spanning over the East side of the Court, it has the most beautiful sights to offer. The Third Territory is home to the wealthy to this day—the nobility of the Spring Court, and the High Lord Himself.
The Spring Court enjoys one of the largest lands in Pythian, and up until Amarantha's reign, it had been one of the most prosperous. Is there any hope for the Court's future left?
The Summer Court
Unlike the Spring Court, the Summer Court's governing body had changed multiple times over the centuries—and with it, so did the Court's landscape.
The very first Court (or so general history says) to host a real city, the Summer Court's pride and jewel is Adriata. The sandstone-made cliffside location enjoys beautiful beaches and castle-like homes for the wealthy to enjoy. A popular vacationing destination, Adriata is mostly inhabited by High Fae Lords of the Summer Court—though with the new High Lord, the young and ambitious, this regime is thought to change very soon.
Due to the mountainous North within its borders, most of the Summer Court's citizens reside in the South. Those in close proximity to the Eastern sea are experts in marine trade, and, similarly to the Second Territory in Spring, mostly engage in fishing and marine craftsmanship. Up until Amarantha's rule, in fact, Hybern was the Summer Court's primary importer of ships and other aquatic modes of transport. As such, the Southeastern part of the Court has seen many developments in infrastructure, with small towns modelled after the great Adriata gradually appearing on the coastline.
Due to strategic convenience, the High Lord of Summer resides below the forests of the West. The close proximity to the Spring and Autumn courts allows for easy communication, guaranteeing quick access should a need for a diplomatic visit arise—something that proved particularly useful during the Great War with Hybern.
The Autumn Court
The Vanserra family established its rule over the Autumn Court after the very first High Lord mysteriously passed with no heirs. Since then, the fire-wielding High Lords have held the land in their tight grasp without the intention of ever letting go.
Due to the majority of the area being veiled in forests, the majority of the population specialises in one of two crafts: hunting or lumber. With the latter being the Court's sole export, a great emphasis is placed on educating the youth on the importance of the industry. In fact, young Autumn Fae are sent into the forest with nothing but an axe for an entire week as a sort of initiation process. If they make use of the tool by hunting and building adequate shelter and survive the seven days, they are deemed as worthy citizens of the Court.
Aside from the High Lord and his family, residing in the Forest House, the Court is governed by four High Fae lords, each presiding over lumber extraction in one of the four areas of the Forest—the North, the South, the East, and the West. The Lords report monthly on their area's performance, and are rewarded with generous compensation if the High Lord deems it satisfactory.
Mysteriously, the High Lord himself opts to reside on the East of the Court, about as far away from Autumn's shared borders as possible.
The mountainous North remains another mystery. Rumour has it that Autumn's highly skilled military resides and trains there from birth until their services are finally required. The harsh conditions provide a strict training regime, and as such, Autumn's warriors are notorious for their survival skills.
The Winter Court
With most of its land frozen and barren, the Winter Court is very strategic in its locations. The Great Tundra at the Court's centre remains largely unoccupied to this day—with sightings of strange, fur-clad creatures roaming the land being reported every now and then. Their murderous instincts led the Court's citizens to take up residence in the West—where the proximity to the sea provides more habitable conditions. The North, unfortunately, remains a dangerous territory due to its shared border with The Middle and its deathly, mysterious creatures.
As such, the East is where most of the Court resides, including the High Lord himself. The Winter Palace is closest to the North, build upon a mountain overlooking the East's Settlements. Each Settlement is a relatively small territory, overlooked by the Court's nobility. The Winter Court is reported to have approximately six Settlements.
After restoring relations with the Solar Courts, the Winter Court is eager to open up settlements in the mountains, with reports of the Middle's threats having significantly decreased after the War with Hybern.
The Dawn Court
Unrivalled in its beauty, the Dawn Court is a land of quiet peace.
Eager to admire the sun rise every morning, the Court's residents mostly live in the mountains in the South, unbothered by their shared border with the Middle. Their firm belief is that no evil creatures could ever do harm in a place of such beauty.
Most of the West side of the mountains is inhabited by regular citizens who, over the centuries, have built cities of immense elegance and architectural genius. The buildings seemingly grow out of the stone and connect the mountains together, creating one, large community.
The East is home to the Peregryns, winged Fae of the utmost grace who mostly act as the Court's aerial legion. They watch over the cities of the West, patrolling the mountains daily and reporting on any dangers that may arise.
The High Lord of the Dawn Court has always resided at the Palace, a stunning structure in the Northwestern Mountains, so high they rise above the clouds themselves. Beneath those mountains there is a beautiful, fragrant land that is home to monthly Festival of the Moon and Sun, where all of the Court's citizens gather to celebrate the sky above.
The Day Court
A land of the sun, embraced by its warmth. The Day Court truly has it all—the Eastern beaches that rival Adriata in their beauty, the Western cities carved from marble and stone, and the spectacular mountains up North.
The East is a popular holiday destination, and the High Lord is known to host lavish events of such magnitude that some have deemed the tradition scandalous. Credit must be given where it's due, though—prior to Helion Spellcleaver's reign, the land was largely unused, its beautiful sights overlooked for the past few centuries. The High Lord's involvement in rebuilding the Eastern infrastructure has significantly boosted the Court's economy, with many citizens opting to move across the land and live a prosperous, relaxed lifestyle.
Although much of the West had been ruined over Amarantha's rule, the Day Court's great cities have been quickly rebuilt given the resolve of the High Lord and his subjects. The cities of Day are now the greatest in Prythian, and are leaders in research and innovation. The most renowned scholars, historians and magic users alike, have stemmed from the Day Court's institutions.
The High Lord himself resides in the Southwest, his cliffside Palace providing some of the most spectacular views in Prythian. The residence overlooks the capital city, the very first one of its kind in any of the courts, which is a treasury of knowledge. Hosting the High Lord's libraries, the city draws in people of all Courts, and, after the shattering of the Wall—even some brave humans.
The Night Court
Perhaps the most secretive Court of all, life in the Night Court happens beyond the mountains, which act as the primary line of defence. The Court of Nightmares presides over this area, though only its military is ever granted access above the mountains—most of the citizens live underground.
The Court of Nightmares is governed by Hewn City, which directly reports to the elusive High Lord. The entire nobility gathers there, plotting in the shadows. Due to its sheer scale, the Court of Nightmares splits into small areas called Cities. Each City lies under one mountain, all governed by the primary Hewn City and kept in line by selected Emissaries.
Beyond the Court of Nightmares lie the Illyrian lands—the Illyrian Mountains and the Illyrian Steppes. The large area is home to the Illyrians, winged Fae of great strength and power who, similarly to the Peregryns, compose most of the Court's military. Still, because of historically prevalent animosity between Illyrians and the High Fae, the Illyrian legions mostly steer clear of the Court of Nightmares, letting their own military patrol the area.
On the West lies the most heavily guarded secret of Prythian, if not the entire world. Velaris, the City of Starlight, is home to tens of thousands of Fae. The Night Court citizens residing in Velaris enjoy a life of serenity, with the city's infrastructure providing them with their every need. Velaris is also home to the High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court.
Between the Northeast and West lies a small island which belongs to the Night Court. The Prison is a place avoided by all Fae and visited only by those desperate enough to risk their lives at most, and sanity at the very least.

Communities warn of threat to ecosystems from Brazil bridge project
Islanders and experts have warned of widespread environmental and social impacts from the construction of a bridge linking the Brazilian city of Salvador with the island of Itaparica in Todos os Santos Bay.
Critics say the project will devastate mangrove forests and coral reefs, leading to environmental imbalance, compromising fishing communities and threatening the survival of many marine species including humpback whales and sea turtles.
Proponents say the bridge will boost development in the region, in particular transporting agricultural produce, but islanders say the anticipated population surge on Itaparica will create unsustainable pressure on public services as well as drastically change the dynamics of the community living there.
Experts say the best solution for improving transportation links between Salvador and Itaparica is to invest in the existing ferry system, but this option wasn’t considered by planners.

Landsat Plumbs the (Shallow) Depths
As the workhorses for Earth science from space, Landsat satellites have imaged Earth’s land surfaces uninterrupted for over 50 years. The missions continue to execute on the big idea of consistent, long-term observations. But limiting observations to land would have kept Landsat from its full potential.
Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey have developed a new way to measure ocean depth, or bathymetry, in shallow nearshore environments using Landsat data. By applying a sophisticated physics-based algorithm to satellite observations, their method offers an expedient way to map the seafloor from space without relying on prior depth measurements. Deriving bathymetry from satellites—a process researchers have been refining for decades—can fill in many mapping gaps in coastal areas and provide up-to-date information critical for modeling water movement, tracking coastal changes, studying coral reef habitats, and more.
The new method, described in a 2024 paper in the journal Remote Sensing, relies upon visible-light observations by the OLI (Operational Land Imager) and OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) sensors on the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites, coupled with a heavy dose of physics calculations. In shallow enough seas, sunlight penetrates the water and reflects off the seafloor. Scientists can then relate the reflected light as “seen” by the satellite to water depth.
The calculation is relatively straightforward in clear water with a bright bottom. But it becomes more complex, for example, when light interacts with sediment or plankton in the water column or a grass-covered seafloor. The USGS researchers developed the algorithm to correct for these types of effects on reflected light, as well as those caused by particles in the atmosphere and the reflection of the sky off the water, to determine water depth.
This algorithm was applied to several coastal areas containing coral reefs, including the Florida Keys, shown here. The depth map (right) shows shallow channels cutting between low-lying islands, also called cays or keys. The shallow linear feature running across the bottom of the image is part of Florida’s stretch of coral reefs, which spans 350 miles (560 kilometers) from end to end. The bathymetric map is shown relative to a natural-color Landsat image of the same area (left).
In clear water, it is possible to map depths greater than 20 meters (65 feet), much deeper than expected, said Minsu Kim, the remote sensing and ocean optics expert who led the method’s development. Crucially, the method works without external calibration, although it can be refined by incorporating bathymetry measurements from other sources. The tradeoff is that the model accounts for the optical properties of common ocean components, such as phytoplankton and suspended solids in the water column, and grass or sand on the seafloor. If uncommon components such as a bloom of a specific phytoplankton species or a rare kind of dark volcanic sea floor are present, the model becomes less accurate.
Coral reef zones were good candidates for piloting this method because they influence sediment transport, affect coastal erosion, and provide critical habitat to much of the world’s marine life, said physical geographer Jeff Danielson, co-author of the paper and leader of the USGS Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project. These environments can also change dramatically over time and would benefit from more frequent re-mapping made possible by satellite-derived bathymetry.
Despite the need for refined shallow-water maps, however, producing them has remained a practical and technical challenge. Bathymetric mapping has traditionally relied upon ship-based sonar and aircraft-based lidar—both cost- and labor-intensive endeavors.
The quest to outsource this onus to satellites includes a pioneering effort by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. In the 1975 NASA-Cousteau Bathymetry Experiment, Cousteau and a team of divers aboard the Calypso played leapfrog with the Landsat 1 and 2 satellites around the Bahamas and Florida. They would position themselves directly underneath each day’s satellite pass, and divers would measure water clarity, light transmission, and bottom reflectivity. Data from the trip showed that in clear waters with a bright seafloor, Landsat could measure depths up to 22 meters (72 feet).
The cross-purposing of remote sensing instruments for bathymetry has continued from there. Subsequent techniques have included using turbidity as imaged by Landsat as a proxy for depth; combining altimetry measurements from NASA’s ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2) with ship-based sonar; deriving depth from stereo imagery; and applying an algorithm to digital photography from the International Space Station.
With the new satellite-based method in hand, Kim, Danielson, and colleagues are looking to scale up nearshore measurements. For example, they want to map waters around Pacific islands and atolls, where data is currently lacking but would be useful for modeling waves, sediment transport, and other processes. Maps are also blank for large portions of coastal Alaska, where hazards including harsh weather, seasonal sea ice, and strong currents have made conventional mapping work difficult.
In the United States alone, coastal waters are currently only 52 percent mapped, Danielson noted. Initiatives such as the National Ocean Mapping, Exploration, and Characterization (NOMEC) and the global Seabed 2030 project are working to increase mapping coverage, alongside the USGS’s CoNED pursuit to assimilate data that now includes Landsat-derived water depth. “It’s one of the hot topics in geospatial sciences right now,” said Danielson. “There is a niche to fill in bathymetry gaps with a new tier of data.”

2,300-Year-Old Shipwreck Filled with Wine Jars Found off Egypt
An engineer was conducting a regular survey of the Mediterranean Sea off Egypt’s coast when he noticed something in the water.
It turned out to be a 2,300-year-old shipwreck, according to an Aug. 5 news release from Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The ancient ship was discovered less than a half-mile off the coast of El-Alamein — which was an important commercial region during the third century BC, Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in the release. The find gives more insight into Egypt’s role as a center for trade, economy and tourism in ancient times.
Archaeologists at the site discovered a number of ancient artifacts in the ruins of the ship, including wood from the boat, hundreds of pieces of pottery, and a number of jars that were imported from Rhodes, a Greek island, officials said.
The Greek jars, also known as amphoras, were used for storing and transporting wine, according to archaeologists. Experts said the ship’s contents indicate that it was a merchant ship.
They were found on a sunken island next to the ship, confirming that the wreck probably occurred because it collided with the underwater landmass.
Officials said excavations of the ship will continue.
El-Alamein is about 170 miles northwest of Cairo.

World History Part 6: Island of Spores
Years ago, an emergency escape pod had landed on a small island. The island was inhabited, though undiscovered by the world at large. They lived a primitive, yet fulfilling life.
And on the night that a star crashed into the jungle and released a new mushroom, the islanders were curious. They thought it to be a gift of the gods, and took the mushroom spores to be planted in their village.
It took several months for the mushroom to adapt from the alien biology it had been meant to infect to that of a human. But when it did, and the first villager twitched through the town like a puppet on strings, and stared across town with a gaping maw and blank eyes, the villagers hailed them as a priest.
And then more of them became infected. And more and more and more and more-
Until the entire village was infected with the Fungle. And as it spread, it learned. It adapted, and it grew fond of its little minions. It helped them, with its limited knowledge of the space station it had been “born” on, and it used its abilities to puppet the people around to build better homes, better farms, and to protect them from predators. And when it infected the animals and plants of the island, it helped them too. It achieved a perfect world, a peaceful island, exactly what it had been designed to do.
The only thing it couldn’t do for its people was expand. The water burned it, washed away its spores, and pulled away its influence. The people it sent out on boats it lost track of, and it couldn’t protect them anymore. It couldn’t spread from them, and eventually, it stopped trying. Making do with the resources the island provided.
And then one day, a ship crashed at sea. Whether an accident, the Toppats retaliating for certain…government involvement in some of their recent missions, or merely hitting an iceberg in tropical waters, nobody could say for sure.
The cruise was an expert disguise to transport a prisoner to a new location where he would later be taken offworld, but the Government couldn’t have expected the high speed missile that destroyed their engines and caused most of the ship to explode.
But beyond that, the three soldiers onboard couldn’t have predicted the small island they would land on. The island covered in mushrooms, with peaceful people who seemed friendly and more than willing to take them in.
But the way they worked in perfect unison to craft buildings far sooner than should have been possible, the way they practically worshiped the Fungle, it caused paranoia among the survivors. It caused them to kill one another, and for the Fungle to return to its desire to spread to infect to grow to protect its people
And then, two of the soldiers killed their Commander, to release him from the Fungle. Enraged, the Fungle spread to the two of them, intending to use them to get to the rest of the passengers. However, it could not predict that the one that was resisting it the most would set them all ablaze.
Moreso than water, the Fungle is weak to Fire.
The Villagers were horrified that their protector was damaged so, but thankfully, it was able to recover with time.

Brimstone Hall Fortress National Park: This is a site of historical, cultural and architectural significance. This centuries-old citadel is a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill and strength of the African slaves who built it on the steep at the risk and probable loss of lives. The walls are predominantly made of stone, painstakingly carved from Brimstone Hill’s hard volcanic rock. The mortar was produced from the limestone that covers much of the middle and lower slopes. Begun in the 1690s, the fortress finally took shape as a complete military community in the 1790s. This prominent citadel is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of a new style of fortification known as the polygonal system.

Book Recommendations: National Dolphin Day
Voices in the Ocean by Susan Casey
While swimming off the coast of Maui, Susan Casey was surrounded by a pod of spinner dolphins. It was a profoundly transporting experience, and it inspired her to embark on a two-year global adventure to explore the nature of these remarkable beings and their complex relationship to humanity. Casey examines the career of the controversial John Lilly, the pioneer of modern dolphin studies whose work eventually led him down some very strange paths. She visits a community in Hawaii whose adherents believe dolphins are the key to spiritual enlightenment, travels to Ireland, where a dolphin named as “the world’s most loyal animal” has delighted tourists and locals for decades with his friendly antics, and consults with the world’s leading marine researchers, whose sense of wonder inspired by the dolphins they study increases the more they discover.
Yet there is a dark side to our relationship with dolphins. They are the stars of a global multibillion-dollar captivity industry, whose money has fueled a sinister and lucrative trade in which dolphins are captured violently, then shipped and kept in brutal conditions. Casey’s investigation into this cruel underground takes her to the harrowing epicenter of the trade in the Solomon Islands, and to the Japanese town of Taiji, made famous by the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove, where she chronicles the annual slaughter and sale of dolphins in its narrow bay.
Casey ends her narrative on the island of Crete, where millennia-old frescoes and artwork document the great Minoan civilization, a culture which lived in harmony with dolphins, and whose example shows the way to a more enlightened coexistence with the natural world.
Dolphin Confidential by Maddalena Bearzi
Who hasn’t fantasized about the unique thrill of working among charismatic and clever dolphins in the wild? Now we no longer have to rely solely on our imaginations. With Dolphin Confidential, Maddalena Bearzi invites all of us shore-bound dreamers to join her and travel alongside the dolphins. In this fascinating account, she takes us inside the world of a marine scientist and offers a firsthand understanding of marine mammal behavior, as well as the frustrations, delights, and creativity that make up dolphin research.
In this intimate narrative, Bearzi recounts her experiences at sea, tracing her own evolution as a woman and a scientist from her earliest travails to her transformation into an advocate for conservation and dolphin protection. These compelling, in-depth descriptions of her fieldwork also present a captivating look into dolphin social behavior and intelligence. The central part of the book is devoted to the metropolitan bottlenose dolphins of California, as Bearzi draws on her extensive experience to offer insights into the daily lives of these creatures—as well as the difficulties involved in collecting the data that transforms hunches into hypotheses and eventually scientific facts. The book closes by addressing the critical environmental and conservation problems facing these magnificent, socially complex, highly intelligent, and emotional beings.
The Dolphin in the Mirror by Diana Reiss
For centuries, humans and dolphins have enjoyed a special relationship, evident not just in mythology and folklore but in many documented encounters. Some past cultures even worshipped dolphins and condemned anyone who killed or wounded of them. Yet in recent decades, a paradox: on the one hand, we have discovered extraordinary depths of dolphin intelligence and their emotional lives, to the point of glimpsing their self-consciousness—on the other hand, in Japan, dolphins are slaughtered indiscriminately, and several nations keep them in cruel conditions.
Diana Reiss is one of the world’s leading experts on dolphin intelligence who has helped lead the revolution in dolphin understanding for three decades. In addition, as an activist, she is a leading rescuer who helped inspire and served as an adviser for The Cove, and who continues to campaign against the annual Japanese slaughters. Here, she combines her science and activism to show us just how smart dolphins really are, and why we must stop mistreating them. Readers will be astonished at dolphins’ sonar capabilities; at their sophisticated, lifelong playfulness; at their emotional intelligence; and at their ability to bond with other species, including humans and even dogs! Her beloved companion dolphins, each with distinct personalities, create their own toys, type commands on a keyboard, tease and scold her playfully, and express their affection and delight. In Reiss’s most famous experiments, she used a mirror to prove that dolphins are self-aware, and even self-conscious. The Dolphin in the Mirror is both a scientific revelation and a emotional eye-opener, revealing one of the greatest intelligences on Earth.
Dolphin Diaries by Dr. Denise L. Herzing
Dr. Denise Herzing began her research with a pod of spotted dolphins in the 1980s. Now, almost three decades later, she has forged strong ties with many of these individuals, has witnessed and recorded them feeding, playing, fighting, mating, giving birth and communicating. Dolphin Diaries is an account of Herzing’s research and her surprising findings on wild dolphin behavior, interaction, and communication. Readers will be drawn into the highs and lows—the births and deaths, the discovery of unique and personalized behaviors, the threats dolphins face from environmental changes, and the many funny and wonderful encounters Denise painstakingly documented over many years. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves these incredibly versatile and intelligent creatures and wants to find out more than the dolphin show at the zoo can offer. Herzing is a true pioneer in her field and deserves a place in the pantheon of naturalists and scientists next to Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall.
