Melissa McCarthy on Playing a Con Artist in 'Identity Thief'
WRITER’S NOTE: This article was originally written in 2013. Ever since she first found recognition for her character of Sookie St. James on “Gilmore Girls,” Melissa McCarthy has left an indelible impression on us all. After watching her breakthrough role as the abrasive and shamelessly raunchy Megan in “Bridesmaids,” a role which earned her a deserved Oscar nomination for Best Supporting

“It's no wonder she had to show up to a venture capitalist's shindig (as the guest of a guest no less) with her begging bowl in hand.” Is that what that was? I saw that Molly Sims was there and a few others but didn’t make the connection. Now it makes sense. Molly Sims is married to Scott Stuber, the former head of Netflix. She knows the tea I’m sure.
Yes, it was party thrown by G9 ventures. Amy Griffin is a founding partner, they are investors in everything from Goop or Bumble.

And also, what's going on with that Meet Me at the Lake production? That's been completely silent.
I think it’s related to the new head of film at Netflix, Dan Lin, who started in April. May well be unwilling to greenlight a film by two producers who put out three back-to-back flops and have never made a film. NF paid for the rights on behalf of AW last year when Scott Stuber was still in charge, so presumably he signed off on that.
Although NF continue to deny it, there are persistent rumours in the industry publications that they are reviewing their film strategy due to a lot of expensive flops. Cutting down how many films they put out, trying to go for quality over quantity. The Variety article I’ve linked is worth a read - Lin clearly wants to change things and is not someone who’ll coddle filmmakers and do their work for them.
Following Lin’s layoffs and restructuring, there’s also people in charge of each genre now - Jason Young is in charge of romcoms. (It was previously structured by budget.) It seems to be quite a different department than it was when AWP got hold of the rights for MMATL.

https://www.thewrap.com/netflix-film-division-movie-genre-restructuring-dan-lin/
Oh, I totally think Netflix is reviewing their film strategy. They have to - this many flops with all the shows they're cancelling means they're definitely scrambling behind the scenes to keep the company afloat because in today's age, "if you're not growing, you're dying."
If I were king for a day, I'd get Netflix out of the film business altogether. Go back to the roots of smart, character-driven television (like Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Mindhunter, etc.), streaming old shows that aren't available anywhere else, and documentaries.

Looks like Jared now has Netflix connections. I know he’s more into tv these days but it’s not a bad connection to have.
It's a great connection, especially with Netflix committed to a $17 billion budget for movies. Somebody should remind Lin that Jared is featured in two of Netflix most streamed shows.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Renewed For Two Seasons At Netflix; Live-Action Series Will Conclude With Season 3
Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.
The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.
It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.
The plan is to film these two seasons – seasons two and three – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.
The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber. Albert Kim is showrunner, having replaced original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko in 2020.
Its three season run will mirror the structure of the animated series, which featured three books across three seasons to Aang’s story that premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005, and became a hit on Netflix during the early stages of the pandemic.
It’s not clear how many episodes will be produced for season two and three. Season one features eight episodes.
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world that is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. “Benders” are people that have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. The “Avatar” is the only individual with the ability to bend all four elements.
The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar.
Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a quest to save the world and fight back against the onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way. Ken Leung and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee also star.
Kim and Lin exec produce produce alongside Jabbar Raisani, Lindsey Liberatore and Michael Goi. Goi and Raisani directed episodes in season one alongside Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson.
It is Netflix’s second anime-inspired live-action hit after One Piece, following a rocky start in the genre with Cowboy Bepop. The streamer highlighted it as one of its latest successful adaptations, coming on the back of other IP-driven series such as The Sandman, Wednesday, Arcane and Sweet Tooth.
The creative team behind the series is keen to expand the story. Avatar executive producer and director Jabbar Raisani told Deadline that there’s stuff that they filmed that didn’t make it into season one.
“If we get another season, then we will certainly have those things, because I know what we missed now and I know how to do better the second time around,” he said. “The animated series is a really good guide
for where the show can go.”

Awesome news seeing there's a biopic in the works about Bruce Springsteen coming from Scott Cooper and A24 and Jeremy Allen White is in talks to star as The Boss!!! 😀 It'll depend on Jeremy's show "The Bear" and if they'll be finished filming by the planned fall filming for this movie. The movie focuses on the recording of Bruce's solo "Nebraska" album that happened at the same time during the recording of Bruce & the E Street Band's "Born in the USA" album in 1982. That album has one of my favorite songs of his "Atlantic City" on it. I'm a fan of both Bruce and Jeremy's so this is going to be great to watch if it all works out. Curious who else they'll cast.

After almost thirty years of development, #ZackSnyder's long-awaited space opera, #RebelMoon, is finally available on #Netflix in its full, unfiltered form.
Snyder's journey to this two-part director's cut highlights his persistence and creative vision. Initially conceived in 1997 with influences from Seven Samurai and Star Wars, Snyder pitched the project to Lucasfilm and Warner Bros. over the years, even considering a TV series. His departure from Warner Bros.' DC universe in 2017 paved the way for Netflix to support the project.
With the backing of Netflix's Scott Stuber, Snyder and co-writer Kurt Johnstad turned Rebel Moon into an epic, offering both PG-13 and R-rated cuts to satisfy a wide audience while remaining true to his vision.

Netflix’s Bioshock Film Now Has A Smaller Scope Due To Budget Cuts

Netflix’s Bioshock Film Now Has A Smaller Scope Due To Budget Cuts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Netflix’s upcoming film adaptation of Bioshock is still happening, but it won’t be as grand as originally planned. During a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, the film’s director and producer revealed the movie now has a reduced scope due to budget cuts.
As reported by Variety, producer Roy Lee (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Lego Movie) revealed during Collider’s Producers on Producers panel that since the film’s announcement in February 2022, a regime change at Netflix has affected the project. Netflix’s film chief at that time, Scott Stuber, has since been replaced by Dan Lin. While Stuber emphasized large spending for an expansive film slate, Lin has scaled back to a more modest strategy. This means the Bioshock film’s budget has been reduced, with director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) stating its been reworked as a “more personal film”.
“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Roy Lee said. “So we’re doing a much smaller version.
It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”
A partnership between Netflix, Bioshock publisher Take-Two Interactive, and Vertigo Entertainment is bringing the Bioshock film to life. In addition to Lawrence and Lee serving as director and producer, respectively, Michael Green (Loga, Blade Runner 2049, American Gods) was announced as its writer in August 2022.
