The masterpiece: incomprehensible dialogue that sounds like it was written by someone who has never had a conversation before and descriptions that sound like an unearthly being is trying to pass off as something with humanly experiences

Let Free The Curse of Taekwondo: Things you didn't notice #1
Isn't this another K-BL where I'm internally squealing because of every single detail? You bet it is. You can read my other meta/cultural detail/Korean language posts for Love for Love's Sake, Time of Fever, Grey Shelter and Boys be Brave on my pinned post or hashtags^^ (I really need to organize it under one singly hashtag tho...)
I already talked about how impressed I am with the fact that this series has done their preparation job well, with props, settings, language, history etc.
It is about a countryside/small town in Southern province of Korea - because a lot of characters use satoori (southern dialect), almost all of them except for the main two guys. There is also a distinct contrast/conflict between 'fancy Seoul rich guys' looking down on 'Southern town'. Juyoung even was surprised Dohoi doesn't use satoori.
To which, he responded with 'You'll be uncomfortable if I use it". And Juyoung said there are plenty other uncomfortable things around here, beside understanding/listening to everyone using other accent xD Confusing Gaga translation errors, we meet again!
Actually, it's interesting because Dohoi's name is written 이도회 in Korean, which typically would be written as 'Dohoi' but pronounced as 'Dohwe' (think of surname Choi that is actually pronounced as Chwe), yet in the first episode I clearly heard them actually say 'Dohoi', letter by letter. Now I wonder if it's also related to satoori... I wish I could speak it, it sounds so cool tbh.
He actually said 'I'm not in a good condition', meaning his physical form. What do you mean, mood, when was that ever an excuse in sports..?xD
By the way, what is it with boys trying to get closer to other boys by buying them unusual ice cream?:') Okay, garlic sounds more weird than red bean one :D
Also, I tried to find the Hasong town they talked about but failed - maybe because of incorrect transcription or maybe they made up this town based on Uiseong - a small town close to Daegu which is famous for being the most famous garlic town, they produce a lot of it and garlic fame would be seen everywhere - so who knows, I bet they allude to this when Juyoung said 'why can't there be a vanilla garlic ice cream? It's like a collaboration!'
Another thing, I thought the time of this series was somewhere around 1990s-2000s (because I watched a movie in similar setting that was called 1997 year but they still used pagers, now that I think about it). It was also still the time where teachers could use physical punishment on their students, it's heavily highlighted but I don't actually know around what time they stopped... Probably in Seoul, they already were getting rid of it but in small towns it was old-school teaching, which is again why Dohoi tried to tell Joyoung out of it.
I'm not familiar when small laptops and phones appeared in Seoul but I think the series is actually somewhere around 2005-2010! Which would make sense, Juyoung got the 'cool' flip-phone and a laptop with Windows XP (released in 2001) but small town is still far from that, as they use landline house phones to make a call.
He also has mp3 player and as other tumblr folks figured out, he was listening and dancing to Jewelry song released in 2005 :)
And another thing that convinced me about the time era... the final scene!
Do you want to know why at the end of Ep 1 Dohoi smiled and laughed and ran to Juyoung even after so many exhausting days and neverending small miseries and a new loud housemate?
Because Juyoung not only came to pick him up with an umbrella in the acid rain, he also reenacted the famous umbrella scene from the classic romantic K-drama called "Temptation of Wolves" (늑대의 유혹) which was released in 2004! To make Dohoi laugh.
(Yes, when Juyoung intentionally put the umbrella down and the camera cut the shot to the framing when the umbrella slowly lifts up, showing smiling Juyoung, I was like 'you did nooooooot' xD)

So that was already our very first romantic teasing-implication!
Another cute thing: optimistic Joyoung wrote a diary entry into the fake old Korean "Facebook" (they had Cyworld instead) to share his first selfie with Dohoi:
"[Excited Shin Jjuyoung]" (typing in a popular back then teenage style) "I miss you guys... But here it's nice too hehe ^___^ Come to play with me!! Together with my friend Dohoi too~~!"
Aren't they the cuteestttttt? I mean, this dynamic is not new but I love how unique the setting is. And I can't wait to watch the second episode, I'm waiting and savoring the first one for now but I'm going to make notes about other episodes as well so stay tuned! Twisted Entertainment News ~April Fools 2024~
The Aniplex Youtube Channel dropped a parody news segment for April Fools Day, which had Kazuki Furuta (Kalim) and Kaname Futaba (Jamil) as "commentators." A full official MMD clip of Absolutely Beautiful was shown, and afterwards, Furuta and Futaba "taught" the viewers back home how to do the dance. I don't normally do transcriptions of videos, but this one made me laugh with enjoyment that I wanted to make sure that everyone else could enjoy it too, especially since I know this video is region-locked. I've highlighted Furuta and Futaba's names with the colors for Kalim and Jamil's that I usually use for their vignettes. I've also added small commentary on their movements and expressions, which is not something I normally have to do for vignettes. I also only translated the "news" portion of the video and left out the final part, which was them returning to reality and talking about the monitors in the in-game shop that could be bought for the Guest Room. I hope this transcription is enjoyable for everyone else, too! Please check it out under the cut!

It’s time for Twisted Entertainment News, where we report on all the hottest entertainment topics. I have with me today two very well-known commentators who have appeared on so many of the variety talk shows as of late: Kazuki Furuta-san and Kaname Futaba-san.
Commentator Kazuki Furuta: Good evening, I’m Kazuki Furuta. I’m beyond honored to have been asked to come on this show as a commentator. Thank you very much for inviting me.
Commentator Kaname Futaba: Good evening, I’m Kaname Futaba. You know, I really dig Twisted Entertainment News.
Furuta: I do hear you say that often.
Futaba: Yeah. I watch it every week, and even record it.
Furuta: Indeed.
Futaba: I’m really hoping we’ll have a ton of great things to talk about. Thanks for having me.
Yasuda: Well, let’s get right into today’s entertainment news. First, Magical Motors is finally venturing into space. Second, are the rumors that the Mysterious Amusement Park is closing true!? And finally, the Absolute Dance is the current breakout trend. Of these three topics, the Absolute Dance is probably the most eye-catching, so, Furuta-san, Futaba-san, have you heard of this dance before?
Furuta: Very much so. It is very popular even in my circles, so not a day goes by that I do not come across it.
Futaba: I’ve known about it for some time now, too. So, I guess it feels like the times have finally caught up.
Furuta: You’re so right.
Futaba: Yeah.
Yasuda: Now then, we’ve prepared a video to show what exactly this dance is all about. Please take a look.

Yasuda: …Right. I do believe that this is a rather complicated dance that cannot be mastered just from watching it once. So, today I hoped to have our commentators, Furuta-san and Futaba-san, to show those of you watching this show at home how to perform it so that everyone can dance along.
Futaba: I see.
Furuta: Of course.
Yasuda: Furuta-san, I’ve heard that you may be a commentator, but you are also a very good dancer.
Furuta: [sounding like he wants to protest politely but is also smug at the praise] Ah, well― that is― by myself, I― [background music cuts] Yes, I am!
Yasuda: Right, thank you. And so, I was hoping we could receive an instructional demonstration from you on how this dance is performed.

I decided it was about time to compile a convenient list with all the information and resources I could find about Claude-Antoine Prieur, also known as Prieur de la Côte-d'Or.
It's very much a work in progress: some posts, those without a link, are yet to be written. The list will be updated and edited with time.

(Not only I plan to transcribe both of them in a lighter, more readable format, but also to write a post comparing the two, though this should wait until I finish reading them fully. For now, from what I could see, none of the two could be considered a definitive Prieur biography: Paul Gaffarel didn't have access to Prieur's personal papers, resulting in a very incomplete work and inaccuracies; as far as Bouchard is concerned, he was no historian but a chemist and it shows both in his very superficial interpretation of the historical period in which Prieur lived and in the uncritical way in which he analyses primary accounts and sources about the latter.
For anyone interested in Prieur's life, I would recommend you to start from the 1946 one: despite the many criticism I personally have towards it, it's more complete, since Bouchard was granted access to Claude-Antoine's papers.)

On the 382nd day, the zionist-Nazi occupation continues to escalate all forms of the genocide war against our people in the Gaza Strip. For the 18th consecutive day, it has intensified the siege on the northern Gaza governorate, particularly in Jabalia and Beit Lahia, perpetrating the most heinous war crimes against unarmed civilians in their homes and against displaced people in shelters and tents in schools.
The zionist occupation in the northern Gaza Strip, with utter brutality and vengeance against our steadfast people who remain on their land after more than a year of war, is committing systematic crimes that fall under the framework of genocide. These include field executions, deliberate killing of civilians, forced eviction using violence amid massacres and brutal bombardment, starvation, siege, attacks on hospitals, bombing and destruction of homes, and the denial of entry for aid and fuel, all aimed at displacing and exterminating our people and creating a new geographical and demographic reality, known as the "Generals' Plan."
For 18 days, the zionist occupation has rejected all UN and international requests and appeals to allow fuel into hospitals, as well as food and medicine. It also refuses requests to rescue those trapped under the rubble, leaving the bodies of martyrs and the injured in the streets, while ambulances are prevented by fire from reaching them. This has led to the death of hundreds of patients and injured people, creating unprecedented and inhumane conditions that threaten the lives of thousands, and preventing any chance of survival for approximately 150,000 citizens remaining in their homes, exposing them to a slow death.
The so-called safe corridors from northern to southern Gaza, claimed by the occupation to be secure, have turned into death traps, targeting our people, including women and children, for field executions, arrests, or brutal torture. As usual, the occupation lies and deceives, directing displaced people to specific roads only to kill them there.
During this period, more than 700 martyrs have ascended, not counting those under the rubble or those unreachable by ambulances, with the number expected to rise amid the occupation army's escalation of all forms of genocide and massacres.
The latest of these horrific massacres was the targeting of an UNRWA shelter in Jabalia camp, the targeting of displaced people in the streets of Beit Lahia, resulting in the martyrdom of over 12 citizens, and the brutal bombardment by artillery and drones on the displaced, leading to the martyrdom of around 50 people in the Gaza Strip since dawn today, including more than 26 martyrs in the northern Strip. [The number has risen to 63 martyrs at the time of publication.] [OP edit: that number is now 70+]
In the face of these brutal crimes that this Nazi army continues to commit against our people in the Gaza Strip, and especially its north, and against all aspects of human life there, we affirm the following:
First: The global silence in the face of the genocide being committed by the occupation in the Gaza Strip, witnessed and heard by the entire world, is a stain of shame on all those who remain silent, hesitant, and fail to act to stop it. The continued silence over the U.S. administration's and some Western countries' financial and military support for the occupation makes them complicit in the crime of genocide against our people.
Therefore, we reiterate that the credibility of the international community and its institutions, foremost among them the UN Security Council, the International Criminal Court, and the International Court of Justice, is being tested against the values and treaties on which they were founded. They must fulfill their role and responsibility in stopping the genocide against the Palestinian people.
Second: The repeated genocidal crimes committed by the zionist enemy throughout the Gaza Strip, as part the execution of its aggressive and terrorist plan, are being fully supported by the U.S. administration and some Western countries, as confirmed by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories.
Here we state clearly: the U.S. administration, which granted the occupation a one-month period to discuss mechanisms for allowing aid, instead of pressing to immediately stop the crimes and aggression, is giving it a timeframe to commit these crimes in their most horrific forms without consequence. This deepens its responsibility and full complicity in this aggression and the genocidal war against our people, and it will not escape political, legal, humanitarian, or moral accountability, no matter how long it takes.
In this context, with the talk of another visit by U.S. Secretary of State Blinken to the region—which represents another American step to provide political cover for this crime—and with discussions about the so-called "the day after the war," we reaffirm the following:
First: Our people have the right to choose all of their options with complete independent free will. They are the ones to decide the details and agenda of the day after the war, and it will be purely Palestinian, not according to "israeli" standards or American desires.
Second: We also affirm that our people will continue to stand firm on their land and continue their resistance to this zionist-Nazi enemy until their demands are met: stopping the aggression, the full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, breaking the siege, rebuilding Gaza, and achieving a serious prisoner exchange deal.
Third: The Arab and Islamic incapacity to take practical and serious action to stop the ongoing massacre against our people for an entire year—despite the numerous statements of condemnation and denunciation—has emboldened the zionist enemy to continue its war and aggression without pause. What is needed today is the use of our nation's capabilities, which can hurt this enemy and curb its terrorism and aggressive plans that will not stop at the borders of Palestine.
Fourth: We call on Arab and Islamic states to urgently convene the UN Security Council and press for the issuance of an international resolution to stop the aggression and protect our people from the zionist massacre. We also call on the UN Secretary-General to issue an urgent appeal to halt the genocide in the north of the Gaza Strip.
Fifth: We renew our call to the masses of our Arab and Islamic nations and to all the free people of the world to escalate and activate all forms of popular mobilization in every capital and public square, and to participate actively in putting pressure on the U.S. administration and all countries that support and back the occupation. This should be done by besieging their embassies around the world to expose their support for the occupation and criminalize their policies, and to gather all energies to force the zionist occupation to stop its crimes of killing, bombing, starvation, and displacement throughout the Gaza Strip, especially in the north.
In the face of this crime, what is required is to exert the utmost effort and power so that the enemy and its supporters understand that our nation is capable and these capabilities will not remain disabled if its aggression and crimes against our people in Palestine escalate.
Finally, the world, which stands in solemn remembrance of the Holocaust—a crime it never witnessed—must now answer for its stance on the new Holocaust it is witnessing live, in real time.
Mercy, glory, and immortality to the righteous martyrs of our people, a swift recovery to the wounded and sick, freedom for the prisoners and detainees, and victory to our people and our resistance, and to every resistance fighter on the path to liberation of Al-Quds and Palestine.
Indeed, it is a jihad of victory or martyrdom.

What is Taiwanese?
As part of my return to posting on this blog, I want to start posting a bit more about Taiwanese! It's not really a language I've seen discussed much on langblr blogs, so I'm going to start with some basics.
Where is Taiwanese spoken?
Unsurprisingly, Taiwan! It's most commonly spoken in the central and southern parts of Taiwan, and less commonly spoken in the northern and eastern parts, but you can hear it spoken pretty much anywhere.
What else is Taiwanese called?
台語 tâi-gí and 台灣話 tâi-uân-uē "Taiwanese" are the most common names colloquially. Officially, (台灣)閩南語 (tâi-uân) bân-lâm-gí "Taiwanese Southern Min" is used as the name of the language. You'll also occasionally see terms like 福建 hok-kiàn or 福佬 hô-ló used. I've given the transcriptions of these terms in Taiwanese, but the same terms are used with their Mandarin pronunciations in Mandarin.
Where does Taiwanese come from?
Taiwanese is a member of the Southern Min branch of the Sinitic language family. During the late Ming and Qing dynasties, Han settlers came over from the Fujian province of China, especially the Zhangzhou and Quanzhou areas, and brought their own languages with them. For a while, there was conflict between Zhangzhou and Quanzhou speakers, but eventually the two varieties coalesced into one language, with dialectal differences causing some dialects to be closer to one or the other. This means that Taiwanese is mutually intelligible with Xiamen/Amoy and Zhangzhou Southern Min, and related to other varieties of Southern Min, also called Hokkien, spoken in China and Southeast Asia. Taiwanese also has loanwords from Japanese due to the island's having undergone 50 years of Japanese colonization, and younger people's Taiwanese has also been influenced by Mandarin.
Is Taiwanese a language or a dialect?
Though some people will refer to Taiwanese as a dialect, it's generally an argument based in a denigration of the language and not really defensible on linguistic or social grounds. I've come to believe that the distinction between language and dialect is mostly social, with some influence from factors such as mutual intelligibility. Taiwanese is treated as a language by the Taiwanese government and taught as a language in public schools. Taiwanese is also not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or other languages outside of the Southern Min family. Some people point to the mutual intelligibility of Chinese characters as evidence that all Sinitic languages are in fact dialects, but even that doesn't hold-- Taiwanese is frequently written in romanization, and even when it isn't, there are plenty of sentences that would be pretty much unintelligible to a Mandarin speaker. For example, the Mandarin sentences 那個女人很美 ("that woman is beautiful") could theoretically be read aloud with Taiwanese pronunciation, but the more natural way to translate and write that sentence is 彼个查某真媠, which is very hard to parse in Mandarin.
How many people speak Taiwanese?
This is a shockingly hard question to answer! Taiwanese is often considered endangered, though it is in a much more stable position than languages such as Hakka and Taiwanese indigenous languages. One common estimate is that 70% of people in Taiwan speak Taiwanese. The 2020 census listed Taiwanese as the primary language of 32% Taiwan's population and the secondary language of 54% of Taiwan's population. This would add up to over 80%, which may seem high, but many people are partial or non-fluent speakers of Taiwanese.
What are the dialects of Taiwanese?
The prestige dialect of Taiwanese is the variety spoken in Kaohsiung and Tainan, which has a mixture of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou features. The Taiwanese spoken in coastal Taiwan, Penghu and Taipei tends to have more Quanzhou features, while the Taiwanese spoken in inland central Taiwan and Yilan tends to have more Zhangzhou features. However, Taiwanese dialectology is complicated, and some people have argued for other forms of classification. The Southern and Taipei dialects are going to be most relevant and salient to most learners.
Why should I learn Taiwanese?
Taiwanese is definitely worth learning if you're planning to spend a significant amount of time in Taiwan, especially central/southern or rural Taiwan. In my experience, I almost never needed Taiwanese to get around in Taiwan, but studying even just a little helped me form relationships with the people around me. Taiwanese has impacted the way that people in Taiwan speak Mandarin, and is commonly seen in culture and politics. Taiwanese-language culture includes traditional art forms like 布袋戲 pòo-tē-hì puppet theater or 歌仔戲 kua-á-hì opera, and modern music, literature and entertainment.
What resources are available for learning Taiwanese?
At some point, I'll make a full post about resources for Taiwanese. But for now, I'll mention that Bite-Size Taiwanese makes some easily accessible resources. There are textbooks out there in both English and Mandarin, as well as books in/about Taiwanese that can be purchased from books.com.tw and shipped internationally. Most language learning apps don't have Taiwanese, but glossika does. Unfortunately, most of these materials assume some knowledge of (but not necessarily total fluency in) Mandarin. There are also podcasts, youtube videos, music, tv/movies, literature, and more materials made for native speakers of Taiwanese that can serve as learning materials.

It wasn't the practice he'd been intending, but… “I'm fluent in Elysian Greek.” That was the dialect Pandora's people used.
“Oh, thank goodness,” said the attendant, handing him a pair of scrolls. “People have been requesting these, and of course we don't get many people who know those dialects out this way, so…”
“Right,” said Danny. “Where should I…?”
“Oh, right here! But… oh dear, I'll need to find a booster seat…”
“I don't need one,” said Danny, quickly. “I can just hover.”
Danny needed one.
(But unlike what the attendant said, he didn't look absolutely adorable in it, nor was he perfectly precious when pouting. He wasn't pouting at all!)
He unrolled the original scroll, weighing it down with the scroll weights on the table, then did the same to the blank scroll he was copying onto.
“Are arrangements like this common?” asked Mom.
“What arrangements?” murmured Danny, keeping his voice down.
“Arrangements between groups of ghosts. Between your library and this one.”
“The library network is a bit unusual,” said Danny. The scroll appeared to be a transcription of the life story of an Eleusinian farmer. “The Library of Tongues gets relatively good deals, too, since most libraries need translators at least some of the time. But there are other groups that do similar things. Like, alliances and stuff between Realms. I think the Goblin Market started off that way. And there are the universities. Schools. Museums, too, but I don’t mess with them.”
“Why not?” asked Dad. “I’d think that they’d work closely with translators.”
“Well, yeah, but museums aren’t always very good about asking. And a lot of them get overly interested in things that are one of a kind.” Like Danny himself. He trimmed the quill pen provided to him and dipped it in the inkwell. He started writing.
“Oh, avoiding them is probably a good idea.”
“You don’t have to sound so surprised, Mom,” said Danny. “I have all sorts of good ideas.” He wrote in relative silence for a while, pen scratching at the scroll.
“What’s in that?” asked Dad.
“The writing? Record of someone’s life. Not very long.” He hummed and contemplated how to translate a complicated religious passage.
“Where were they from?”
“And when?” added Mom.
“Eleusis,” said Danny. “And, hm, there’s not a date. Usually stuff like this is pretty old, though.”
“Eleusis. As in the Eleusinian Mysteries?”
“Yeah, I think so. This doesn’t really say anything about them, but I’m sure there’s stuff in the library proper that does. Why?”
Mom sighed. “Sometimes, finding things in the Ghost Zone, it’s a bit like time travel without the time travel. It’s a window into history.”
Danny frowned slightly. It was history, and books were always a bit like that, but it wasn’t as if the person who the scroll was about was necessarily gone. There was a very good chance that they still existed. They had already been dead when they’d dictated this.
Well, it didn’t matter, he supposed. It was very unlikely that they’d ever meet the guy. He wasn’t sure why it bothered him, anyway.
He finished the scroll and rolled it up. He looked up scanning the room for the attendant. His eyes, however, caught on the large man with the bat ears and moth winds. He looked like he was suffering, his skin soft and melty. The thin man didn’t look like he was having a good time, either, fighting with his wings and an over-the-shoulder bag. Oh, and there was something broken on that printing press that he could definitely fix. And then, if he thought about it, this translation hadn’t taken him long at all. He could certainly afford the time to do a few more.
… Danny realized, then, that in addition to not having much of a chance to travel and explore, lately, he hadn’t had much opportunity to indulge his primary Obsession beyond helping in the lab, and now that he wasn’t swamped in the haze of cabin fever, it was itching its way out of his skin.
He was going to be horribly nosy about things. He could just feel it. All the practice in minding his own business he’d gotten in high school was years ago now.

I think what frustrates me about the whole “they didn’t teach us this in school” “yes they did” “no they didn’t” argument is that like. Maybe the lesson was happening in your classroom. Or maybe the lesson was happening in the room across the hall, because at age 15 you were told to decide whether or not you were going to attend a four year university or pursue a trade, and then based on that decision (which is largely based on your family’s economic status) you no longer get to learn certain subjects.
My second grade class was over 30 students, many of whom didn’t speak English (and in this particular case these were all Spanish speaking children), but there were no more spaces in the ESL class. So my teacher paired the seven year olds who spoke both English and Spanish with the ones who only spoke Spanish, in the hopes that their translational skills would be enough to get everyone to third grade, where there still wouldn’t be more spaces in the ESL class.
In my current certification program, we are meant to do a research project. Just a simple essay. My classmates that I’m personally friends with are 18, 25, 29, and 43 years old. All of them finished high school with either a diploma or GED. None of them knew how to create a basic 5 paragraph essay structure. This weekend, I am going to demonstrate an outline from my own project topic, and we will learn to construct an essay together, and how to format citations.
At a certain point in teenage and adulthood, it is absolutely true that you are responsible for seeking out your own information. “We didn’t learn this in school” is not a good excuse for a 20 year old American who doesn’t know where Palestine is. And yes, a major component of K-12 is the English and language arts portion, in which you’re taught media interpretation and literacy skills. These things are impressed upon all children who attend American public school, which is the scope of my experience and what I am able to speak on.
But those classes are of little use to people who don’t speak the language they’re being taught in. Or if they’re in a desperately overcrowded classroom. An underfunded district without enough text books to go around. Or, after a certain point in high school, you’re pulled out of English because your transcript requirements changed, since you’re not expected to attend a traditional university. The examples go on.
My point isn’t that we actually should never expect people to take responsibility for their own ignorance, just that we should not underestimate the impact of never being taught something, or the likelihood that many people genuinely were never taught.
