-Makoto had a little brother, 4 years younger than her. His name was Kuro. Sadly, the school Makoto and Kuro attended was suddenly shot one day. While they were trying to escape, a masked man found them and pointed his gun at the children. Kuro stepped in to protect his older sister and got shot in the head, and another time in the stomach. Makoto got shot in the stomach. Before the man could shoot Makoto a second time, three policeman had surrounded the man and arrested him.

The injured kids were taken to the hospital immediately. Makoto survived, but Kuro didn't make it. The Gushiken family was devastated, but Makoto struggled the most. Her parents took her to therapy, also taking the opportunity to get some therapy themselves. The homelife wasn't going well ever since Kuro's death. Makoto's mother started to drink, and her father tried to make his wife snap out of it by reminding her the tension in the house wasn't good for Makoto.

Makoto's mom soon found healthier ways to cope with the grief.

-Makoto is a fan of manga and small figurines, as well as telenovelas.

-She cares a lot about her looks, taking her time to style her hair and do her make-up. She likes staying pretty ♡

-Kuro used to ask his sister for food when their parents were too busy, so Makoto would make him snacks. She gets reminded of that bittersweet memory when she makes snacks or buys candy and shares them with Beel.

-Makoto always wanted to learn to play the piano. The piano is her favorite instrument.

-She's really, really touch starved. She wants to be hugged constantly and cuddle with someone, but is a little too shy to ask.

-Mako has stomach rolls, the baby is really insecure about them :(

Out of the 9 wips I have, 4 are sam/dean. The songs used are :

Devil in her heart by The Beatles : the lyrics work perfectly as a dialog between Sam and Dean about Ruby, with Dean trying to warn Sam (listen can't you see/she's got the devil in her heart/she’s gonna tear your heart apart) and Sam refusing to see the signs (oh, no, no, no, this I can't believe/no, no, nay, will she deceive) because Ruby swore she could save his brother (she’s an angel sent to me).

The song allows to revisit not only Sam’s obsession to keep Dean safe to the point of deluding and losing himself but also Dean’s obsession to keep Sam just for himself. The lyrics could actually be read as Dean trying, time after time, to convince Sam, that the woman he is currently interested in, is dangerous. The things is : for him, they don’t even have to be monsters to be wicked, they just have to threaten to take Sam away from him.  

Jenny by Studio Killers : the line 'we should be lovers instead' 👌 Pure pining. Perfect for both of the Winchesters but the vid will focus on Sam, infatuated with Dean. Sam who wants more but isn’t ready to risk it all since it may ruin their bond. The eternal dilemma of : should I confess and tell you why I can’t stand the men and women gravitating around you ?

Should I stay or should I go by The Clash : many doors slammed in this one. It’s all about them loving each other to death and still hurting each other like no one else can. It’s all about them fighting and disappointing their brother to the point of driving him away. Just to be lost when he is gone.

Which, yes it is, but also, Fushiguro refuses to let anyone know his true music tastes so adaptation is necessary for survival

If Fushiguro has the aux, it’s a good day, he knows everyone’s music tastes and probably already has a playlist tailored specifically to everyone’s taste, there’s never a single song that everyone hates

Kugisaki

She listens to Avril Lavigne and Kesha

Her and Yuuji have pretty similar music tastes (himbo/lesbian solidarity)

She also listens to songs like Jenny(by the studio killers) and Youth(Troye Sivan) and just stares at the ceiling pining

Her playlist reflects this

From pop to pining and then back again

Also she hasn’t stopped streaming Driver’s License(Olivia Rodrigo), her and Yuuji listen to it and every time she just falls out (when it first came out, she got so invested in the drama of it all)

Genres she listens to are rock ballads, pop, and any playlist with words including but not limited to ‘wlw’, ‘girls are pretty’, ‘how to not have a crush on Maki-senpai’

Artists she listens to incl. Kali Uchis (stumbled upon Dead To Me and hasn’t ben the same since), Queen, pop girlies like Brittany Spears, and Troye Sivan

Maki

Maki mainly listens to workout music or indie/chill beats

 Like her playlists are lowkey dry

And she refuses to use spotify premium, even though Gojo’s paying fo it

I can also see her listening to an occasional orchestral/instrumental piece like Ushiwakamaru

Inumaki also kind of put her onto listening to video game soundtracks, she probably listens to the soundtracks of games like Persona tbh

She does allow herself the small pleasure of listening to Hozier from time to time

Inumaki

Inumaki is a menace

His music taste, while there are bangers, mainly consists of music found in memes/tiktoks/etc.

He does listen to other artists like Junko Ohashi and Rina Sawayama on occasion, the majority of his music taste exists to make him laugh as he thinks of all the random jokes made to the songs

Whenever, Inumaki has the aux cord, everyone in the car just mentally prepares themselves

With Inumaki, they feel bad telling him to stop because he’s really sweet and nice, and, maybe he just doesn’t know

Panda

Panda listens to 80/90s rap

Tbh he’s got the best music taste out of everyone sorry not sorry

He mainly listened to whatever Yaga put on growing up so that’s why his taste is older than he is

Artists for Panda include Biggie, Pac, Outkast, etc.

Principal Yaga is black I just know Panda grew up listening to Ice Cube and the like while he was training I just knowwww

Panda’s playlist choices though usually aren’t too egregious

While Panda’s no Fushiguro in terms of adaptability, who’s really gonna be opposed to listening to bangers from the 90′s

Gojo

Gojo’s taste in music exists solely to torture Fushiguro

Now does he necessarily like any of these songs he plays? No

But does his desire to antagonize out rule his dislike? Yesyesyesyesyes

Gojo, unlike Inumaki, does not get the same sympathy

When Gojo syncs up his Bluetooth (bcus let’s be real that man does not have a car with a physical aux cord) everyone in the car just lets out the loudest groan

Just for that he’s gonna make 3 extra unnecessary turns

In actuality though, when he’s not bothering his students or Nanami, I imagine Gojo is a fan of 90′s rap as well as classical music

I think he also likes rock too, he discovered it back in his student days and it never really went away

He also definitely has a playlist called something like ‘my main character music’

General car shenanigans(imagine this as a class trip to some place that’s about 2 hours away)

Gojo and Inumaki team up to antagonize everyone

Like they will play 10 hour loops of caramelldansen with absolutely ZERO remorse

Fushiguro and Kugisaki slowly just go insane during the course of this

Although, Kugisaki will be a lot more vocal about it, cussing up a storm by the 4th loop.

This will then lead to Gojo and Inumaki being overthrown; Gojo being replaced with Ichiji at the wheel and Inumaki on thin fuckin ice

When the inevitable silence becomes too much to handle, Yuuji will tentatively offer to play his music

It’s all good, California Girls and Toxic instant hits

Yujji’s reign will end in one of two ways; 1) eventually, a Megan Thee Stallion song comes on a Gojo’s like “whoa kid, that’s not very family friendly” or 2)The sound of Kugisaki, Gojo, and Itadori singing poorly on purpose pushes Maki to take over out of frustration

Either way Maki takes over and they all kinda doze off because of how chill and soothing Maki’s music is

This ends when Ichiji gets a little too relaxed by the music and almost swerves, causing them to abruptly cut the music off

Panda just puts his paws up non-defensively like, “Don’t ask me, my music isn’t family-friendly either

At which point they all look to Fushiguro to save the day

And he does... until his phone battery dies

(Bonus) Sukuna

Sukuna probably tunes out all the miscellaneous stuff that Yuuji listens to

But one day he was minding his business till he heard Yuuji playing a Nicki Minaj song

Now, whenever Yuuji falls asleep, Sukuna will pop out every once in a while just to turn on Nicki.

   Their shared room in the Obelisk Blue dorm was dark, save for the bright flashes of their television. Tonight was movie night and Asuka wanted to study so it was just Junko and Momoe enjoying a midnight fest of all their favourite rom-coms on VHS. They were piled up in their lounge together, Momoe in Junko’s lap and Junko’s hand in Momoe’s hair, petting it idly as they watched the movie together. They had a large bowl of popcorn next to Junko, given that she was sitting up straight, that was half-eaten, more by Momoe than Junko, funnily enough.

   They were at the climax of the second movie that they had put on together. There was a third movie they had lined up for after this one but they were both getting sleepy, barely keeping their eyes open for what was meant to be the biggest and best part of the movie: the kiss.

   The handsome male lead and the gorgeous female lead had been going to and fro with miscommunication after miscommunication, battling their fate and mutual attraction with all sorts of random plot elements thrown at them and now, finally, it was their time to resolve all that then enjoy ten minutes of on-screen happily ever after. But before the credits rolled, all the tension between the two protagonists had to be resolved with nothing but the biggest, damn kiss imaginable. Tongue was in cheek and there was moaning. The colours around them were bright, the lighting was magical, but honestly, it looked more gross.

   So Junko asked, “Have you ever been kissed, Momoe?”

   “No, I haven’t,” Momoe replied, “have you?”

   “Me either.” Junko murmured.

   The kiss on the television screen, in that grainy VHS pattern, was still going and it still looked gross. Momoe snickered to herself.

   “I’ve come close though.” Momoe confessed.

   “Really?” Junko asked, sounding more surprised than she actually was.

   “Yeah, a couple boys from Ra Yellow, and this one guy from our dorm but its weird.” Momoe mused. “I always get scared at the last minute. Like I’m not going to be good enough.”

   Junko’s lips soured. She knew that impulse well. Though, for her, it wasn’t so much that she wasn’t going to be good enough, it was more that…

   “Or like I’m not going to enjoy it.” Momoe continued.

   That was exactly what Junko was thinking. It was more that she was worried that she wouldn’t enjoy it and suddenly, her body just turned into a brick wall and she had to scurry out of this situation she created. Some boys were more kind about it than others.

   “Maybe it's because you’re putting too many expectations on it. The first kiss is pretty important but… there’ll be others, probably.” Junko commented.

   “Yeah, that’s probably it.” Momoe cheerfully agreed but she could sense that the mood was weird now.

   The movie wasn’t enjoyable anymore and truth be told, this conversation wasn’t enjoyable from the get go. They felt so close to one another - Momoe was literally in Junko’s lap, after all, cuddled up to her friend - but weirdly distant from another. Like there was a truth that neither of them wanted to confront, at least realistically. Maybe as a game or something silly, perhaps. As a dare, well, it was just like the song set to the rolling ending credits was trying to tell them, sometimes, there ought to be a little bit of risk when it came to relationships.

   “Maybe we just need to get it over and done with, yeah?” Momoe suggested.

   “And who would you pick, hm? It would have to be someone with low stakes, right?” Junko replied and she increasingly got the feeling that she maybe shouldn’t be encouraging this line of topic, that it might go somewhere that they couldn’t take back.

   Such feelings were right on the money when Momoe earnestly retorted: “You.”

   Junko felt her nerves prickle at that. She didn’t think Momoe was wrong but she didn’t think Momoe was right either. Junko felt herself getting very warm underneath Momoe all of a sudden - and doubly so when Momoe began to wriggle around and got up on her knees. She propped herself up on her hands and looked Junko right in the eyes.

   “We should kiss.” Momoe insisted.

   Junko felt her heart pound. It was slow but it was hard, “I dunno…” she hesitated. “It's not really something friends do.”

   “I think, um, I think friends kiss all the time. So it shouldn’t be a big deal, especially when done between girls.” Momoe reasoned but she sounded entirely unreasonable.

   “Y-yeah, good point.” Junko replied, not caring how frantic Momoe sounded. 

   The veneer was giving way, all those fleeting crushes that never panned out, that was more performative than of genuine attraction, that anxiety of not living up to expectation when it came to boys. It was glaringly obvious, so long as neither of them said - or at least peppering it with that one word. Friend. Keep it platonic, deny that it was romantic. That one word would make it all okay. 

   Momoe eased up on Junko and let her get comfortable. Momoe knelt on the lounge and waited for Junko to be ready. Junko didn’t think she would ever be. So, it was just like the conclusion they had come to. It was better for it to be over and done with than savoured, that way, they could, you know, do it when the time was good and right and proper. Exactly what was expected of them.

   Junko kissed Momoe, surprising her and Momoe liked it. She really liked it. They both did. Junko kissed aggressively and she had poor technique; not that Momoe would know or realise but it was certainly better than what they were watching in the movie together. Momoe giggled as Junko kissed her, pecking her lips and trying to get her to hold still, trying to maintain the myth of a good kiss being about seven seconds long, but Momoe made it difficult when she couldn’t help but smile. 

   “Was I good at that? Junko asked, hotly, embarrassed.

   “Yup.” Momoe replied and then tilted her head cutely to the right. “But we should keep going, just to make sure. Also, I wanna be the boyfriend, this time.” She winked. “After all, that’s all we’re really doing. Playing a game of girlfriend-boyfriend.”

   “Yeah…” Junko hesitantly agreed. Something about Momoe’s nonchalance rubbed her the wrong way but it’s not like she wasn’t clinging to some veneer of heteronormativity either. She swallowed, she half smiled, and changed the subject, “Do you wanna put another movie on, too?” 

   “Hm, nah, I’m good.” Momoe replied.

   Momoe looked all cute and pouty as she played the aggressor - or the boyfriend, as she called it. Junko found herself melting into the lounge and Momoe took the opportunity to straddle her as they kissed. And suddenly, she was recalling all the times that they had borrowed lip balms and the like between each other. Scant, indirect kisses that totally didn’t count and would never count but the peachy taste was still there, even though Momoe hadn’t reapplied at all in between all that salty, buttery popcorn she had eaten. The mesh was peculiar but Junko wouldn’t have it any other way. She let a sigh escape her mouth as Momoe kissed her and her lips were soft that they may have been sublime but this was just a mere second kiss. 

   A second kiss, to make sure they knew what they were doing but it was more than apparent they weren’t doing it as friends. Somehow, they were doing it as girl and boyfriend which meant, inevitably, the smush of lips would be as girlfriends but maybe that would be okay.

A/N: My first request! I hope you like it!! If you couldn’t tell, I am a sucker for friends to lovers, and I’ve been listening to Jenny by Studio Killers, so expect a fic revolving around that soon lmao

The jist of it: You’re in love with your best friend Kirishima, it took getting stabbed to let him know it.

Lady luck was definitely not on your side.

You knew it as soon as you opened the door to your class on the first day of your hero course at UA and saw him. Your heart dropped into your stomach at the sight of his red hair and bright smile. You thought about turning around and either dropping out of the hero course or just out of UA all together, but alas, red eyes found yours and you suddenly found yourself crushed into a hug.

“(Y/N)! I didn’t know you were in the hero course! How awesome is it that we’re both in the same class!” You flushed slightly at his excitement, patting his back awkwardly before taking a step back from his embrace. Confusion rippled over his expression but it was gone as fast as it came. You avoided eye contact and mustered up a small smile and a soft statement of agreement, face still flushed pink. He opened his mouth to speak, you couldn’t help but glance at his sharp teeth before meeting his eyes and then deciding to focus on the small scar above his eye.

Before he could speak again, the door behind you opened and his eyes flickered to the person behind you. You took the momentary distraction as a chance to escape, mumbling a soft ‘ “scuse me” and moving quickly to a seat in the back. You busied yourself with the things in your bag, trying to make it look like you weren’t avoiding the teen, who no doubt was confused over the way you were acting.

You let out a soft sigh of relief as he moved back to his desk, and soon enough the teacher came in and you turned your focus on school, rather than your best friend you were avoiding.

You sighed for the umpth time that day as you packed up for the day. You had successfully avoided Kirishima for the whole day, making small talk when you absolutely couldn’t. He had yet to ask why you were so obviously acting different, which you were thankful for. You knew it would come eventually, you were just hoping that you’d figure out what to say before the time came, you couldn’t really say ‘Oh sorry I’m avoiding you, I realized this summer I’m hopelessly in love with you but you are definitely way to good for me so I’m just going to slowly cut off contact to save myself hurt!’

Unfortunately the time came sooner rather than later like you had hoped. As soon as you spotted him waiting anxiously at the gate, you cursed your parents for buying a house three doors down from the teen, and yourself for not realizing he would want to walk home together, like you had for the last three years of middle school. You took a deep breath and smiled, giving yourself one last time to indulge in him before going back to your plan. You called out his name, waving when he looked up. Alarm bells went off in your head the moment your eyes met and he broke out in a big smile waving back and coming to meet you. ‘fuckfuckfuck I shouldn’t have done that’ You tried to swallow your thoughts and your blush at his smile, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear as the two of you started your trek home.

You allowed yourself to indulge, letting down the walls you had started to build, basking in the warmth Kirishima brought you, and just enjoyed being his friend in the moment. The two of you shared stories from the summer and random old memories that came to mind. You had missed him a lot in the few months you hadn’t seen him, having avoided him all summer under the guise of vacation. He let you sit on the inside seat on the train, next to the window like you preferred. Though now you felt slightly trapped.

“Y’know I was scared earlier,” He started, and you looked at him quizzically, he gave you a soft smile before continuing. “This morning, and earlier during class too. I was sure you were avoiding me. I thought I had done something unmanly over the summer, I mean you didn’t even tell me you were applying for the hero course.” He sighed as he trailed off, and guilt bubbled in your gut. You had been trying to save yourself from hurt, but by doing so you were hurting him. You turned towards him and went to take his hand before stopping yourself. You met his eyes and smiled sadly, deciding that you would rather hurt yourself by being friends like old times than hurt him.

“Oh Eiji I’m sorry I made you feel that way. Please know that it was absolutely nothing you did. I’ve just been really nervous today, and I didn’t want to burden you with my anxieties. And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about me going into the hero course, it was a last minute decision.” You weren’t really lying, you had been nervous, and it was a last minute decision to join the hero course, you just left out the ‘I’m in love with you’ part.

He reached over and put a hand on your knee, squeezing it affectionately. You felt the warmth from his hand spread through your whole body. “(Y/N), You’re my best bro, I hope you know you can come to me with anything! I think a lot of us were feeling anxious today, It’d be weird not to! I’m glad we can go back to how things were, my moms were asking about you all summer!”  You giggled, glad things were back to semi-normal.

And semi-normal they stayed. You and Kirishima resumed your friendship, acting like nothing had changed since middle school, except for the fact you would come home everyday more and more in love. You were doing a decent job of keeping it contained, until the USJ incident that is.

‘Specialized rescue training’, what fun. Your quirk wasn’t the most helpful in rescue, made more for medical help. You had a healing quirk that could, at the moment, heal small wounds. Nonetheless you were excited at the possibility of growing and honing your own quirk and seeing where your classmates were at stability wise. Though you definitely did not expect there to be villains and to have to fight said villains. Especially with your best friend/crush.

You and Kirishima had just knocked out the last villain, and you surveyed the room while trying to simultaneously catch your breath and not ogle your best friend. He look good, a little too good, in his hero costume, you were having a hard time keeping your eyes to yourself. The two of you were making a plan on how to get the fuck out of here when you saw it, the slightest bit of movement and the villain who suddenly appeared, leaping for Kirishima, knife in hand.

Your feet moved before your mind had fully processed what was happening, and next thing you know you had pushed him out of the way and there was a blooming pain in your gut. You looked, wide-eyed at the knife in your abdomen and back at the villain, who looked like a chameleon. Thankfully Kirishima had spurred into action, knocking the villain out while you were still reeling from shock. You felt dizzy and slouched to the floor, Kirishima next to you in an instant, scolding you for taking a literal knife for him and also calling you manly for being so brave. His words went in one ear and out the other, though you could barley hear them over the buzzing in your ears and your eyes were still locked on the knife in your stomach. His hand placed on your shoulder seemed to snap you out of it somewhat, and you promptly pulled the knife out, wincing at the pain.

Maybe that wasn’t the best idea, as the shock seemed to wear off and the pain came crashing into you as blood flowed from the wound. You could faintly hear Kirishima speak to you, you could only identify the worried tone of his voice. You clutched your stomach, trying to stop the bleeding, but that only caused you more pain. You let out a deep breath, hissing at the contact before remembering you had a healing quirk and got to work. You had to concentrate hard for it to work, and unfortunately that caused you to be unable to filter your words.

“(Y/N)! Are you listening? Why in the world would you do that? He could’ve killed you!” You rolled your eyes at his scolding, unable to stop the next words that tumbled out of your mouth.

“Why? Maybe because I’m hopelessly in love with you, doofus. I wasn’t about to let you get stabbed Eijiro, and besides I can heal myself.” You could feel him stiffen besides you, and you cursed, pinching the bridge of your nose with your free hand. You focused on the soft light emitting from your wound, imagining the skin stitching itself back together as you also mulled over your next words, almost not hearing Kirishima’s response.

“You love me?” It was so soft, you would’ve missed them if there was anyone else speaking in the room. You sighed, it was too late to take the words back, or to dismiss them as friendly. You might as well get rejected, you already got stabbed what could be worse? You exhaled as you finished healing yourself, too tired to keep up the charade any longer. You turned to him, looking at the ground between you two before speaking.

“Eiji listen, I know you don’t feel the same it’s oka-“ Your words were cut off by hands gently grabbing your face and lips slanting against your own. You squeaked, eyes widening, not quite sure what the fuck was going on. He pulled away after a brief moment, still holding your face, pressing his forehead softly against your own. You met his crimson eyes, tears welling in your own. What was he doing?

“Who said I don’t feel the same? How could I not love you (Y/N)?” You could see the love in his eyes and hear it in his voice, but you still couldn’t believe it. You let the tears fall down your cheeks and you moved back before throwing your arms around him and burying your head in the crook of his neck, crying into his shoulder. His arms wound around your waist gently as he held you, rubbing your back and softly talking. He spoke of the moment he knew he loved you, and everything he loved about you. It only made you cry harder, months of pent up pining and sadness finally coming to the surface. He really loved you back.

After a few minutes he gently pried you back, wiping your cheeks tenderly. You sniffled and nodded, knowing the two of you needed to get back to the task at hand. Love could wait until the two of you were safe.

Later that day, as the two of you were on the train home, Kirishima tentatively took your hand in his. He smile nervously, clearing his throat before speaking. “(Y/N), I still can’t believe you did that back there, and it made me realize, I can’t handle being best friends anymore.” Your eyes widened, did you hear him wrong? Did you somehow dream the kiss? Sensing your panic, he was quick to continue, squeezing your hand reassuringly.

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have worded it like that. What I mean is that I feel the same way, I have for a while. Before I was fine with just being friends, but after what happened back there, with what could’ve happened, I can’t just be friends anymore, I need more, would you be okay with that? With being more?” He looked at you nervously, and you had to fight back tears for the second time that day. You smiled and nodded, not trusting yourself to speak. His face brightened, and he gave you a trademark shark toothed grin, intertwining you fingers. You shuffled closer, resting your head on his shoulder. Maybe you should get stabbed more often.

“Conventional Weapons” and the Rocky Road to “Danger Days”

In 2009, My Chemical Romance was buzzing with activity. The band performed several shows and festivals (including Summer Sonic in Japan), Gerard and Mikey Way attended San Diego Comic Con, and The Umbrella Academy was named one of Amazon’s top comics of 2009. Ray Toro held a Whopper eating contest on the official MCR website (no joke), while a certain comic series written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon was announced in August. And at a show at the Roxy in Los Angeles, MCR performed three new songs from their upcoming album.

But while their next album seemed easily slated for an early 2010 release, MCR was about to hit a series of hurdles that would leave them with a scrapped album, a lost drummer, and a totally new outlook on where their music was headed.

On July 31st, 2009, MCR performed a set at the Roxy that included three new songs–“Kiss The Ring,” “The Drugs,” and “Death Before Disco.” Gerard was enthusiastic about the new tracks, even telling Rolling Stone that “Death Before Disco” was “the greatest song we’ve ever written.” Videos of the tracks soon appeared online, where fans eagerly devoured what they thought would be the follow-up to 2006’s The Black Parade.

As the days and weeks went on, the media blitz kicked into high-gear. While Ray Toro posted short studio clips on MCR’s website, the band gave several interviews where they gushed about producer Brendan O'Brien, discussed their new stripped-down style, and claimed that this would be their best record yet. In an interview with MTV, Gerard described the still-untitled album as a “true love letter to rock and roll,” adding:

“There’s something about being an American rock-and-roll band that we’ve kind of grown into and we’re very proud of. And I think that’s what we’re celebrating with this record. There’s no agenda, there’s no mission; it’s just about rock and roll.”

Meanwhile, Gerard Way and close friend Shaun Simon had another surprise in store: a comic series called "Killjoys.” Dark Horse Comics announced the release at San Diego Comic Con. Jeremy Atkins, the Dark Horse Director of Public Relations, described “Killjoys” as “a psychedelic rock-and-roll road trip adventure geared toward both fans of The Umbrella Academy and My Chemical Romance.” But not much else was said about the comic, as MCR’s upcoming album had become Gerard’s top priority.

As the album drew closer to completion, MCR gave fans more glimpses of what lay in store. They shared the titles of various tracks, including “Still Alive,” “Trans Am,” “Hail To The King,” “Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back," “L.A. Heavy,” "The Only Hope For Me Is You,” and “Black Dragon Fighting Society.” They cited a variety of influences, including Queen, Judas Priest, Bruce Springsteen, The Killers, and Blade Runner. By all accounts, this was going to be MCR’s defining album.

In December, MCR previewed seven tracks for SPIN magazine. A month later, in January of 2010, the album–which was still untitled–was rumored to be released on March 30th. As they continued to rework the songs, they realized that the stripped-down sound wasn’t working. As NME reported in January:

Things turned around with a song called “Trans Am,” now renamed "Bullet Proof Heart,” the likely first single. And perversely, they did it by returning to fiction. Broadly, it’s about a boy in New Jersey, dressed in a Judas Priest T-shirt, called Johnny. And a girl called Jenny who might be his girlfriend, but who also (honk the pop fact sirens!) might also be the missing girl from “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” by The Killers.

But in the same interview, Gerard restated that the album would give "the purest, best version of the band you could ever hope for.” And in early February, MCR finally started to wrap up production, telling Big Cheese that the album would probably be released in spring or summer.

“Killjoys” also looked promising–back in January, Scott Allie had reported in a blog post that Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan were ready to get started. Once Gerard wrapped up the album and finished working on the Umbrella Academy movie screenplay, it seemed like he’d be ready to dive in.

But February was also when the band publicly stumbled for the first time.

Before the Big Cheese interview, MCR had abruptly cancelled their appearance at the Soundwave festival in Australia. In a blog post on MCR’s website, Frank claimed that Gerard was having voice problems (he jokingly implied that it was due to coffee and cigarettes) and required treatment to make a full recovery.

Fans were disappointed, but most understood that it couldn’t be helped. But a month later, the fandom received another shock: MCR’s drummer Bob Bryar had departed the band. In another blog post, Frank told fans:

As of 4 weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways. This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same. We also wanted to give you all a quick heads up on how the record is progressing. We have been writing some very powerful new songs so this week the four of us entered the studio once again, and what has been ending up on tape each night is some of the most exciting and honest work we have ever created.

The fandom was stunned. Clearly, MCR had been experiencing some behind-the-scenes turmoil, suggesting that the process wasn’t going as smoothly as fans had thought. While it wasn’t known at the time, they also parted ways with producer Brendan O'Brien, who had been hired specifically to channel their raw, back-to-basics sound. Where would MCR go from here? And when would fans hear the latest album–which was apparently undergoing rewrites once again?

It wasn’t until late 2010 that fans would finally learn what had happened to this unreleased album.

This moment, says frontman Gerard Way, looking back on what went wrong, “was the hardest part”. Guitarist Ray Toro was “home dealing with some family things”, leaving Way, his bassist brother Mikey, and guitarist Frank Iero alone in the mixing studio. “The sinking feeling was really starting to become loud that it wasn’t right - that the record wasn’t finished, I couldn’t even put them in a track order … "Thinking about it now, it’s kind of upsetting, because I just felt so lost,” Gerard says.

This was discussed in an interview with Herald Sun, where they talked about the process of starting again after the departure of their drummer and producer. Speaking to Music Radar, Ray Toro talked about the struggles the band had with original producer Brendan O'Brien, admitting that it hadn’t gone as well as they once thought:

“He was really trying; he did the best he could with us. He knew things weren’t clicking, and he’d try to rally us. I remember he said, ‘Hey, on some songs, I’d love to hear you do what you did on The Black Parade.’ Because there wasn’t any of the harmonized guitar parts or the stacking that I usually do. He was trying to get us to make one record, and we wanted to make something totally different.

Musically, we wanted to go back to our basement. But just because we wanted to do something different didn’t make it easy. In many ways, we felt as though we were holding ourselves back creatively. We were going through the motions. Some of the songs were good, but we weren’t happy with all of them.”

Needing a break, Gerard took a vacation to the desert that surrounded Los Angeles. There, as he told Terminal 5, he realized “I had started the band after 9/11 when I hated art. Black Parade had been about hiding and punishment. I couldn’t tell the truth so I’d talk about cancer instead. I had to put on a mask to show people who I really was. But now it was time to own it. To be who I was before this band started. And I had something in my back pocket: this song, ‘Na Na Na.’”

Reunited with producer Rob Cavallo, who had worked on The Black Parade, the band kicked things off with “Na Na Na.” Gerard and Shaun Simon’s comic “Killjoys,” once a separate side project that had nothing to do with the band, suddenly became the concept that they formed the album around. Fueled by fresh creative energy, the band wrote and re-wrote tracks, came up with concepts and characters like Dr. Death Defying, and shredded the limitations that had confined them. At one point, Gerard turned to his brother Mikey and said “Danger Days, here we come again!”

Not everything from the previous record was scrapped. “Trans Am” became “Bulletproof Heart”; “Death Before Disco” became “Party Poison.” A few new versions of old tracks appeared on the record, as well as the Mad Gear and Missile Kid EP that came later. But MCR’s fourth album had gone from a rock and roll record that deliberately avoided ambitious storylines, to a vividly realized concept album that invited fans into the world of post-apocalyptic California. In many ways, it was the opposite of what they had originally planned. And it seemed to be exactly what they had been looking for.

During this time, Frank snapped in-studio photos that he sold on MCR’s official website, offering one-of-a-kind peeks into the recording process. In March, Mikey Way stated in a blog post that “One day you will wake up, and nothing will ever be the same again, but it’ll feel like an old friend.” He was talking about upcoming changes to the MCR website, but in a way that statement reflected the band’s process at the time–they had completely reinvented themselves, and yet there was still a certain familiarity in the old tracks they had revamped.

The band completed the album with fresh energy, offering sporadic updates in the coming months. Fans waited with some skepticism to see what MCR had in store. And finally, one day in early September, MCR’s website disappeared and was replaced with a mysterious transmitter. The Danger Days era had begun.

But was the scrapped album hidden away, never to be heard again? Not quite.

In 2012, in a blog post on MCR’s website, Frank talked about the feelings of depression that he had faced after The Black Parade. He felt like MCR had done it all, leaving them with nothing left to accomplish. In November 2008, Gerard called him up to talk about the band. As new ideas took shape, they prepared to start recording the album that would eventually be scrapped after months of work.

Frank pointed out that while the band had limited themselves during the recording of this album, the songs weren’t inherently bad��in fact, some of them were among his favorites that the band had produced. As time passed, he developed a greater appreciation for the tracks. And when the band met up and listened to those songs, they decided to release a selection of tracks to the public–two tracks a month for the next five months, for a total of ten.

After all this time, the album finally had a title: Conventional Weapons. Tracks included “Kiss The Ring,” “The World Is Ugly,” “Surrender The Night,” and the fan-favorite “The Light Behind Your Eyes.” Listening to the tracks, it was clear that MCR had aimed for a rock album with a pure American sound–no ambitious concepts or storylines, just a set of killer tracks. Whether they succeeded is up to the listener to decide, but they provided some insight into what came before Danger Days.

Due to its unconventional release, and the fact that the album was a series of random tracks and not a finished product, Conventional Weapons is not considered an “official” MCR album. But while Danger Days was the final album, Conventional Weapons was the final release before MCR broke up in 2013. Since the split, the release of CW has caused many fans to wonder–will My Chemical Romance’s fifth (and unreleased) album ever be shared in a similar fashion? Or will it be locked away forever, like the other CW tracks that were never released?

Only time will tell. But for now, Conventional Weapons serves as an intriguing part of MCR’s history–a time when the band set out to make one type of album, and ended up making the complete opposite.
