I'm all for the headcanon that Anastacha is Francis' daughter. There's even the famous phrase 'The Milkman's Daughter'.

However, it's because of this phrase and the story behind it that I'm just not on board with the idea that Francis and Nacha were married and now divorced. Francis is THE MILKMAN! It's a long time joke (and it stems from many, many true stories) that housewives have affairs with the milkman while he does his rounds. When a child looks nothing like the rest of their family, people might jokingly refer to them as 'the milkman's kid', implying they're an affair child. My thoughts on all this? Nacha and our milk boy, Francis, did some homemade milk shaking while Nacha's actual husband was either at work or getting eaten by Doppelgangers. Or maybe Mr Husband noped out of the marriage when he figured Anastacha wasn't his.

Maybe there was never a husband and Nacha just found herself knocked up with the Milkman's kid. Either way, I don't think they had a relationship that stemmed more than just sating each other's needs during the milk round. I don't think Francis even knows he has a daughter unless Nacha would have told him. But hey; there's room for them to grow close together and bond if that's your kind of thing. I just don't think they were ever married or in an actual, dating, relationship.

Shout out to whoever said one of Shiv's visceral, emotional reasons was that Tom would never be able to take the moral high ground in their relationship again. Because exactly!

Shiv still might be fucked in the business sense because Tom is a puppet and Matsson doesn't respect her, but in terms of her marriage... She still wants him even after the worst things have been said, and the "worst thing" he was most upset by was that she repeatedly left him out to dry in pursuit of her own power. Well, now it doesn't matter how valid his complaints were! He can never make that particular point again without the most loaded silence of his life! And on top of that, he's added another betrayal of her. That new imbalance more than anything is what will derail the divorce, and make it so she's NOT meekly coming home and begging him to let her stay as his housewife or whatever.

Business power is still up in the air, but she's taken a huge amount of private power back. It was an emotional move driven more by hurt than logic, but she's still done it!

And I do appreciate the TomGreg parallel here, too, because Greg has always been Tom's solution to feeling like Shiv was above him. His own personal Roy to lord over. Their friction was coming from Greg growing an ego around the Roy name and trying to leverage himself out from under Tom's thumb. Well, now he's fucked it! It's not Royco anymore! Greg doesn't have Matsson's backing, his name is worthless, and he overplayed himself into a certain death situation. And then here's Tom, letting him stay despite the betrayal but only because Tom bought him.

Tom got the crown, Shiv got the marital upper hand to help her deal with that, and Tom got Greg to help him deal with that.

They are so fucking dysfunctional but maybe TomShiv can make this work 😘

So here we go, my collected list of Mentions of Carmy's dad in the Bear:

S1E1, Carmy and Richie are arguing about the tournament:

Carmy: “We need the business! Nerds come to Rockford to play.” Richie: “Yeah, in 1987,when you were still in that deadbeat’s balls”

2. S1E4, Carmy, conversing with Uncle Jimmy, as follows:

J: “you ever miss him?” C: “I didn’t really know him well enough to miss him...when’s the last time you talked to him?” J: “around 20 years ago. We had a gnarly fight.” C: “What was it about?” J: “A million things. Drugs, alcohol, gambling. Mostly because he insisted on doing stupid fucking shit all the time. You know he had a new career every 10 minutes, wanted to be a broker then he wanted to be and defensive coordinator dead serious … suddenly he's a restaurateur, really stuck your poor mom with that place.

Later in the conversation, Jimmy adds (I edited a bit):

“I had a dream about him once, your dad, we’re up in lake geneva – we’re driving along, he’s in the passenger seat and we’re driving fast like really fast and i can’t get control– he wouldn’t put on his seatbelt, suddenly some kid, little boy walks into the middle of the road, slam on the brakes, but your dad goes flying through the windshield but he never lands, he keeps on flying” 

3. S2E06- When Mikey is picking a fight with Lee, he says-- “See here’s the thing, you know, I can throw forks because this is our father’s house. My father’s house.”

Earlier in the episode too, Donna references "dad's gun" when she's screaming at Nat, which I think is fascinating that all these years later it's still his gun -- and calls him "dad"

4. S3E06 - Tina asks Mikey if the Beef is a family business, and he answers: “My old man, he opened it. He also ran it into the ground. He just like has a giant stack of unpaid bills and he took one look and split, he hightailed it to the hills, never came back." I liked the following conversation too:

T: "They’ll do that?” M: “What, bills?” T: “Dads” M: “Amen to that” 

5- S3E08 - In addition to telling Nat she has her father's ass, Donna also tells Carmy's birth story, and it's the only one of the three that features their dad:

“Your father was there for that one… I wish he wasn’t No seriously. We were fighting the entire time. And the hospital. The hospital was a fucking mess. It was as if every person in the world decided to have labor at that exact second. And he… [scoffs] He kept asking for a sedative. [Sugar: Dad did?] Like he was about to give birth. Like he was asking for a sedative, and he was panicking, and he freaked me the fuck out.

so in summary: Carmy's dad abandoned the family when he was too young to really remember, he was unreliable, he clearly had addiction problems, there was dysfunction in his relationship with Donna, for some reason they still refer to his gun as his years later
