"...HE WROUGHT HIMSELF A NEW GUISE, AN IMAGE OF HATRED AND MALICE MADE VISIBLE..."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on an illustration of Sauron, the Dark Lord and Enemy of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, as he appeared during the Battle of Dagorlad in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy (2001-2003). Artist unknown.
"...his spirit arose out of the deep and passed as a shadow and a black wind over the sea, and came back to Middle-earth and to Mordor that was his home. There he took up again his great Ring in Barad-dûr, and dwelt there, dark and silent, until he wrought himself a new guise, an image of malice and hatred made visible; and the Eye of Sauron the Terrible few could endure."

GOOD NEWS—the paper pattern fits well even over my bulkiest sweater, so it should still fit great in leather and over a gambeson. It’s interesting seeing my planned tooling work at full size; I’m dithering as to whether I like the teeth that big/there at all, though admittedly once the piece is dyed black it will be a lot more subtle.

Something I noticed with the costume design for Sauron, is there seems to be a subtle thread that carries through from s1.
After they got to Eregion, his tunic kept getting more and more embellished with dark pearls.
Example 1: Meeting Celebrimbor, then in the second shot speaking with Galadriel after she's become suspicious.
In s2e6, as Annatar, his outfit seems to get more and more intricate beading on it that I swear was not there in the previous shot. Perhaps he's just like "can't sleep, time to bead." :)
(I do not currently have stills of e6, if anyone wants to add feel free. I noticed it when his cuff glittered, where previously I don't think it had. Also could just be seeing things.)

Gothmog, Thuringwethil, and bonus Tevildo
i was digging around in my files and rediscovered some really old silm art of mine, including my original angband trio designs (mostly traced off heroforge models lol):
and they're actually pretty cool! thuringwethil's tail is maybe a little questionable of a design choice (how are you supposed to fly with a giant tail flopping around...) but it looks really good on gothmog.
i don't really remember what i was doing with sauron (he looks a little like early curufin for unknown reasons) and idk what the wrist things are supposed to be, but Original Flavor Thuringwethil was actually a corrupted maia of manwe (eonwe's sister?), hence the feathers instead of traditional bat wings. for Original Gothmog i am less sure about his origins but he is possibly a corrupted maia of ulmo (originally a sea serpent, hence the tail and ulmo style ear-fins) who basically dried up into a more stone-based serpent
anyways i think I might keep thuringwethil's face/wing design and gothmogs full design for future use

My first Tumblr post!
Let's start here by talking about a concept I've been kind of in love since like 2019-ish, and it's representing the Gondorians from Lord of the Rings as Byzantines, be it regarding clothing or equipment. In general, I like to combine gear from various periods of byzantine military, but mainly from the Macedonians and Komnenian dynasties. I also like to add some non-byzantine pieces, if it fits, like the mytrhil helmet of the Citadel Guard, which is inspired in a certain type of Hellenistic helmet.
So, to sumarize, what I'm sharing here are:
1- A Citadel Guard of Minas Tirith
2- Two heavy infantrymen from the city or one of the big fiefdoms of Gondor
3- A knight of Minas Tirith, clad like a cataphract

Sauron
“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them”
I think I need to make a separate hashtag for such ‘miniature’ works of mine by this point…
It’s not the best picture I’ve ever drawn, partially due to my black pen not being as ‘sensitive’ to strokes as a blue one. But that’ll do, especially as a first attempt at portraying this man.
I don’t care how inaccurate this design is to the one we saw in a movie, I tried to replicate the “vibes” more than the right placement of sharp pikes, engravings and such stuff)))

Wait a little longer, I “Beg” you… for an update on “Touch the Darkness” 🔥
But until the full chapter posted, here is snippet from our favorite King and Queen… as she helps him fit his newest armor in the forge 👀
Saurondriel | Explicit | 4.1K Chapter
…The slinking sound of chainmail filled the room as piece by piece Sauron clad himself. He was long overdue for a new set of armor, just for him and of his own design. The age of merciless spikes had closed behind him, now, he let the golden light swirl among the darkness, touching it, illuminating it. Transforming it.
His fingers lovingly caressed the golden swirls among the black metal, beginning to buckle his greaves. They fit perfectly to the lines of his shins. And each piece he buckled around his legs the same empowering, emboldening magic. Standing, he relished the ripple of metal over his skin, then through the links across his back, he felt the tender brush of hands. Her hands. Turning, Galadriel’s face lit in that very small, very gentle smirk. “Such elegant trappings, my lord,” she purred as he shifted the armor about him, his height bearing down upon her. Her hand deftly took the black and gold vambraces from his grip. Her touch sparked fire in his blood, even through the light mithril of his chainmail. Her fingers danced as they wrapped the black metal over his forearm, and she could feel the heat of his gaze, watching her every movement, clenching tendons beneath every stroke and brush. Buckle after buckle snapped easily into place, first left, then right arms. Delicately, she traced the golden waves and swirls that crested over the armor. And, silently she worked, the blue depths of her eyes darting frequently to meet his own, her smirk pasted in place as she watched his desire, his hunger growing with each piece she helped strap to his body.
With a curling grin, Celebrimbor crossed over to them, growing used to their constant burning for one another. That passion, that heat reminded him of the old days with Thingol and Melian, of Beren and Luthìen… those loves for the ages to recall in song. The breastplate he bore between his hands shined brighter than the rest, the flourishes of gold sweeping to the center, and there in the middle of his chest laid the outline of an unblinking eye. Galadriel took the plates in her own hands, lifting it high enough to reach over Sauron’s towering shoulders. And Sauron laughed that pointed, staccato chuckle aloud at the sight of her craning on the tips of her toes to finish dressing him.
A deep throated sigh, she ran her hands to the last few buckles atop his shoulders, her pace deliberately slow, her eyes averted as she slipped the last claps together beneath his armpit. Every press of her hands over the open spaces of the armor sent unbidden shivers of arousal through his core. That coy, delighted smirk that she refused to make while looking at him directly proved every contact was deliberate.
“Such a curious choice of design,” she breathed, just loud enough for his ears alone. “I miss the crimson scales of your magnificent armor from our first ride into battle together,” then her eyes flashed up, bright with her burning desire.
“Yes but this,” he swallowed, his breath hitching at the ball of heat she had sparked behind the cooling metal, “this design means so much more. It is the union, our union, of light and power, an eye always watching our enemies. A gaze of strength and protection to leave them trembling, should they dare approach my kingdom, my queen…” his bare hand reached for the swell of her belly. “… and our heir.”
