The first seasons of the third doctor are so funny. You have a show with an easy format: space man and earth girl time travel (or space travel) in box and they fight new quirky bad guys (or occasionally the same bad guy). And they were like, no, his box is broken so there’s no time travel or space travel, we will have the same freak as the villain every episode. The Doctor works for the government now.

Thinking about Jo March from Greta Gerwig's Little Women (2019) and how she writes a conventional, heteronormative happy ending for her heroine while also living out her own happy ending outside of normative societal expectations -- outside of that written narrative.
Thinking about Li Lianhua from Mysterious Lotus Casebook and how he writes a letter capping off his conventional, societally normative story -- and then lives (or dies) outside of that narrative.
Thinking about how Greta Gerwig crafted a very intentional meta-commentary on the ways in which "we author our own lives even if we’re not writers, and how we tell and retell the story of how we became who we are.”
Thinking about how I read both Jo March and Li Lianhua as aroace characters, and about the important message of crafting our own meaningful stories, and endings, on our own terms.
(Also thinking about @seventh-fantasy's fabulous fem-coded LXY meta, and thinking about how women in conventional stories must either end up either married or dead. Thinking of how brilliantly Li Lianhua escapes the narrative by being neither, or both...)

The Heir of Redclyffe is teaching me that what Little Women really needed was for the March sisters to have a clever, witty, sharp-tongued, disabled brother who was BFFs with Laurie.
#charles edmonstone my beloved#he's so much fun#and his friendship with guy is one of the best parts of the book#i'm shocked to see a victorian book where the disabled person is neither a monster nor a saint#the disability affects his life and the household but it's far from the only thing about him#he's a great character in his own right#he even has a plot-relevant illness#but the plot relevance isn't 'oh no he's near death let's have drama'#but 'he's having a flareup and can't write letters so someone loses a vital correspondant at an unfortunate moment'#(charles does later lampshade the lost opportunity for a dramatic deathbed reconciliation scene)#but anyway despite my continued comparisons of this book and little women#they are different books#aside from the laurie thing and the general family atmosphere and the moralizing mother figure there's quite a lot different#for one thing the male characters are much more interesting than most of the female ones#the girls are fine but certainly not the main draw of the story#i do like the religious aspect of this one more though#at first it was giving me anxiety cuz they agonize over teeny little sins#but once we moved from childish concerns to more adult ones the faith aspect became much deeper#still clunky and eye-rolling at times but also surprisingly natural in some places#and i'm still holding my breath for whatever made jo cry over this book#66% through the book; it's gotta be coming relatively soon#books#the heir of redclyffe#little women#charlotte mary yonge#louisa may alcott

amy's arc is SO surgery shaped... the universe pouring into her head as a dissection of a whole being, separation of the mind and the body (you are too much for one body to hold!!! you are haunting yourself from within!!!! every haunted house suffers from the illness of dichotomy, a desire to unite the ghosts haunting it with the present moment), pregnancy storyline unites flesh with technology, amy is now reduced to a surgical instrument with the story functioning as the patient. pieces of a person scattered across time and space, the reading glasses, the mini tardis, the sunflowers are what keeps amy eternal, in this way she is the operating room because the world didn't just take from her, it took her as its own right hand. but she can never leave the OR. she can never be forgotten, but she can never live either.
