Heyo Fine Folk of the Interwebs! Here is the process I used for my recent robot painting. The whole VR to paint thing is rather fun and weird. I started out with a napkin sketch. I often scribble notes on them, so that I can remember the feeling I was going for. I then took some reference shots. I’m used to being able to look at myself for reference, but in VR I can’t see myself at all. Once I had sketches and reference photos, I jumped into @oculusrift and @gravitysketch to build a scene and pose my little robot friend. I built him in #gravitysketch a couple weeks ago. My workspace looks like the very first image (it’s a bit out of order) I then exported the scene I built to @foundrymodo to use the #octanerender plugin to create a beauty pass and a few other handy render passes like zdepth and AO. Then I headed over to photoshop to do some compositing of my render passes. This is the part where I get to actually paint :) With subject matter that is so easy, the photoshop cleanup was pretty minimal. The second to last image is what it looks like in photoshop before I started painting. It’s a trippy process. Going from a loose doodle to building it in the palm of my hand is really a wild experience. In Gravitysketch the lighting and materials are fairly simplistic, so when I start playing around with materials and renders in Modo, the scene takes on a whole new life. At long last I end up where I started, with a stylus in my hand.
