Have you guys noticed how Qimir speaks Osha's name as if it were a prayer? When he first said her name out loud in episode 5 it was like a reverent whisper....."Osha," he breathed, like a man who had just discovered a new religion, a sacred word that held the weight of his soul. Every time he says her name, his voice is filled with a devotion that wraps around each syllable like a lover's embrace. I am literally going crazy this ship is driving me insane I need to sit down

Do you think
Do you think there are sects of Mandalorians that put up pictures of Satine the way people put up pictures of the Virgin Mary
Like those illuminated icons
Part of me is suddenly very convinced that there are people who treat her like Catholics do saints
(I don't actually know what the Catholic angle is. I grew up Orthodox, and iconography was a big part of the divorce of 1054. Like I know that icons aren't a thing for Catholicism but also I've seen like. statues of saints? and there's paintings of Mary by Catholics? so I just threw spaghetti at the wall)
I was thinking about after the Empire rose, and maybe after the glassing.
I'm imagining the people who do it being the children of people who were young but around during the civil war.
Like Sabine and the generation after her.
Where they themselves were of traditional families, and heard stories of the conflicts, but hindsight just had them going "what if we hold up this woman as an icon of peace" and then maybe them, or maybe the generation after them, went "she was our leader, and she is dead and among the stars, and she was a symbol of peace, and let us pray to her."
@jebiknights:
I mean after she dies maybe? I could see her becoming a martyr to the cause but idk I've never gotten the impression she was actually revered But now I'm imagining people praying to Satine's ghost and being like "hey can you do me a solid and tell Tarre/the Manda to help me find my lost head piece" I feel like she'd be more held up as a martyr/revolutionary figure than religious though but maybe that's just me. The type that would get spray painted on alley walls as opposed to prayer cards
Given the ideology Mandalore has around death (ka'ra and whatnot), I feel like there's an overlap there. Like yes she's a martyr and a revolutionary figure, but since she was a leader, she's also sort of like. Ancestral worship But All Of Mandalore Is Her Children.
I'm imagining Satine like… generally she's a revolutionary figure and martyr, but some people took it further, and so she was getting colloquially sanctified by some, and others verging on Let's Make A Religion Out Of This.
Tumblr media
This got long, more under the cut.
jebiknights:
I think it's just hard for me to picture her that way with all of the split between factions during her time ruling, and a lot of that was about traditional way of life and connections with religion. I could see her as a subjugated government figure that even those who didn't like her politics might see as a symbol of the sith/the empire trying to take over and then destroy them. I personally just don't see her crossing over into religiousity for a long long while after
I'm coming at this from the perspective of Former Socialist Yugoslavia.
A lot of my parents' generation were actually more religious than their own parents' generation (not my parents, but there were a lot of others who did) because of the overarching normalization of atheism by the government. Being religious was a form of rebellion. In this case, I'm imagining a clinging to the ancestor-worship parts of Mandalorian culture as being the part people embraced in response to the Empire trying to stamp them out overall.
jebiknights:
Oh I didn't mean that they're more or less religious I just didn't think she'd be incorporated into it bc of ya know the civil wars shrugs Or wasn't trying to say I couldn't see it because of less religious? I do think increased religiousity makes sense for the Mando's during and after the empire I guess I'm just struggling bc I'm drawing a line between Important Martyr in current political and religious struggle and "Saint like figure who almost immediately starts a new religion" lol. Cuz I just struggle to see her as the latter but that's just me no shade on her 💜 I think the initial comparison to the virgin Mary really threw me off 😂
Which is. Uh. NGL I was just thinking about the specific element of Having Pictures because Mother Mary was the only one I was sure that Catholics have in their houses. I've been told that it makes more sense to go the Orthodox route since we do iconoclasm a lot more.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuut also like. Yeah a few sects may, if not immediately, go full Main Religious Figure about her. Just give it a few generations.
Farmers as isolated as Din's covert, but Not Armor.
tbf most of this was inspired by Maul's weird hate shrine for her in sw Rebels.
Tumblr media
This is what vaguely got me thinking about "Some people tried to canonize Satine."
Anyway, I was thinking in this style:

Antijedidiots don't know anything about Buddhism, or any religion outside of Christianity, specifically catholicism, old news I know
But have you ever noticed that despite their transparent catholic trauma projection, they don't seem to have a very good grasp on catholicism or Christianity either?
Like if you can look at the big neon sign obviouse Buddhist-inspired Jedi Order and somehow see the catholic church, maybe you don't know much about that religion either?
Makes me wonder if their whole issue with Christianity stems from a failure on their part to pay attention to it

A fun side effect of my art history studies is that it really put Christianity in perspective (thanks to all the different spiritual systems all around the world). And let me tell you, Christianity is fucking strange.
Christianity really is unique. Nowhere else did I heard of something similar as the Trinity. One god into three bodies that are both very distinct and whole by themselves but also one single entity. The entire religion is based on a man who died in a lot of pain like a slave. The symbols of the religion are directly linked to that death (the cross, dude, the cross). Everything is more or less entirely focused on death and the fear of it.
And then you have catholicism (that's the one I'm most familiar with but I'm sure other christians movements have "fucked up" things like that). The Eucharist is symbolical cannibalism. You eat god's flesh and drink his blood. And I'm not going to talk about how this movement developed into terrible intolerance because that's not the point right now.
Catholicism and Christianity at large are unique. I really mean it. It has a relationship with the divine that's just strange. And it's entirely centered about fearing death while not really assuming it but also it's everywhere you look. It's really dark.
But also very insidious. It's hard to notice how strange it is when you're drown in it. When you're used to it because "yeah of course the Virgin Mary had a kid by herself." ("Artificial reproduction? Oh not good, completely different") We're used to it, it's logical to us.
But it is not the norm. This is NOT how other religions work at all. Not even other monotheisms are Like That and have that kind of relationship with their religion. And people really really need to understand this. Your norm is litteraly one of a kind.
So when you're faced with, for exemple, a fictive religion, from a fictive world, let say the Jedi. You CANNOT think about their religion like it's Christianity. You litteraly can't. And the fact the Jedi's religion is based on Buddhism (which double down as a philosophy to make it really different) makes it even worse. They do not see their faith the same way you're used to. It's galaxies away (bad joke assumed) from your experience with religion.
Really guys, be aware of the uniqueness of your faith and religion and be careful to not automatically applied it everywhere. Or you're going to fall into a very very deep trap of misunderstanding.

Seeing people call the Jedi Order a cult makes my blood boil. I'm tired of people seriously believing the Jedi are some emotionless child kidnappers. They're an order of Knights not fricking priests.

I think one of the most impressive things about Dave Filoni's Star Wars' works (beside his knowledge & respect for the lore of SW) is his understanding of the importance & impact of its visual language on pop culture, and our consumption & interpretation of SW as fans & the general public.
He gets it, he gets that for over 45 years SW fans have seared Luke standing under the twin suns of Tatooine, Yoda teaching Luke in the swamp, Vader & Luke on the bridge of Bespin, on the Death Star, and so much more into our brain, our heart & soul. Those images are iconic, not just from a pop culture front but from a SW lore pov.
It is why in ep 5 of Ahsoka we get so MANY scenes that are callbacks to the OG films but also to the animated series. It is bcos SW is built on echoes of what came before it, except we have reached a point where the callbacks/parallels are to SW media itself now.
So when we get scenes of Ahsoka & Anakin fighting on the walkways of the World Between Worlds, we are getting nearly half a century of cultural VISUAL callbacks & parallels. Luke vs Vader, Anakin vs Obi-Wan, the countless battles during The Clone Wars and so much more. We know & we understand the inherent importance of history that is on our screen. And we fucking breathes it in like life saving air.
It is why when Anakin & Ahsoka stand next to each other, arms folded in front of them, purviewing the destruction of Mandalore, we are recalling the visual familiarities of Anakin & Ahsoka like this in the animated series, the ways Obi-Wan & Anakin stood next each other, the ways Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan stood next each other, and so much more. It is a legacy, it is an iconic stance we all know, that we all connect to SW. Because we have seen it multiple times between Master & Padawan.
It is people walking through dust/gas - a nightmare coming to live, a dream being over, the ways we connect the fear & hope on Geonosis, the battles, and Vader striding through gas. We know the visual cues - a threat or a vision.
But isn't just recalling echoes now, Dave Filoni is creating new SW visuals that will be adding to the lexicon of SW visual language in our brain. Hera, Jacen & Jacen standing in front of the cliff, the ocean beneath & in front of him. It is Anakin striding away into war, smog & fire lighting his way, flashes of Vader present. It is Anakin striding through the smog towards us, Vader across his shoulders. It is the Purgills in the air, in space, their presence in the light. And so much more.
Filoni's visual understanding that SW is full of important & memorable scenes, scenes that are embedded into our subconsciousness, and then creating new scenes for us to latch onto is amazing. A scene in SW can't just be cool, it needs to serve an emotional, a plot, and a mythical purpose. It needs to be iconic.
(And the music. NEVER forget the music).

my god is not inherently kind. i need you to know this. my god is not loving my god is not gracious my god is not even necessarily good. but my god is not bad either.
my god simply is and that's all there is to it.
my grandfather served his God. he served his God devoutly. my grandfather served his God and studied His word and poured over the torah and tanach endlessly. and my grandfather was not a good man for it.
he was unkind. he was anxious and that made him angry. he was big and tall and angry. and he was intimidating. he was abusive. not to me but to my mother and her brother.
by the time i came around he had morphine in his veins. he was a blessing to me. i never had to change anything about my little autistic self and he was far too drugged up to care. nothing could've changed that i was his granddaughter. nothing could've changed that he loved me. and since i was unloved by the people in my life that weren't high on pain meds day in and day out, it was a blessing to me that i could be loved by someone like him.
but that does not mean he was good. he was racist. he was ableist. he was zionist. he was sexist. he knew a God that had no issue with these things. his God was kind to him. or perhaps He wasn't. but his God was certainly not kind to those my grandfather hated. and my grandfather served his God. and he served Him well
my god is not kind. my god is not just. my god does not love. but my god also does not hate. and i do not serve my god.
my god moves on. and that's all there is to it.
my grandfather would not have liked my god. i think maybe that's a good thing.
my god is not good. my god is not kind. my god is not loving or gracious or patient. but my god is not my grandfather's
my grandfather is dead and my god is mine.
and that's all there is to it

I have more Coruscant culture thoughts... So I've already talked about the artistic aspect here (possible bad aspects of the Elite's taste in arts, in reference to Bernard Palissy and Benvenuto Cellini, two Renaissance artists) and here (more focused on the mediums used, especially by the lower levels people).
But I haven't talked about religion and its artistic productions much yet. And now I have ideas.
Well, first, everybody on Coruscant (and the Core at large) would know about the Force because, obviously, the principal Temple of the Jedi Order is there. But that doesn't mean everybody believe in it in a spiritual/cultual way (what I mean is that it won't necessarily be part of people's religion, even if they know it exists). But it could lead to some interesting beliefs fusions and assimilations (in the same spirit as the take that the Manda and the Force are one and the same). But that's another subject.
To that, is added the multiculturalism of Coruscant, especially its lower levels. People came to this planet and have bring their culture with them, which also means their religions and cults. And then they were all mixed together so there would be cultural exchanges and influences, including as I said with the Force. It won't necessarily be systematic at all, but it could frame the evolutions and enrich the practice and traditions.
Coruscant's levels would be recipients of so many different celebrations and holidays, some would merge together (especially solstices celebrations, and different traditions could be mixed together depending on the resources on hand or just the families and levels). Good luck trinkets and talismans and other little amulets and spiritual objects, divinities figurines, of so many different cultures and homeworld would be sell in the markets and the streets. Maybe some levels have temples of those various religions (or the equivalent spiritual place).
Little homemade and customized altars could be find at the corner of two streets, or hidden in nooks formed by Coruscant's eclectic organisation. Sometimes a few people stops in front of it to add some offerings or pay their homages or pray.
Little solaces of devotion hidden in everyday's landscape.
But it could also be non religious. Just like sometimes we put marks on the places we lost a loved one to a roadkill (in Greece it's sort of little altars, small constructions that are lit up with a candle at night to mark the spot, in France it's often flowers or a sign, it can be with a photo of the lost one or just a mark of love like hearts or such), maybe there is such reminders adorning Coruscant lower levels. It could be because of a speeder accident, gang wars, a bounty hunter that don't care about casualties.... Still, there would be proofs of loved ones being lost all around the lower levels, warning of the dangerous places for others. It could be in the forms of holos sure, but maybe people from a more aquatic world would decorate those places with shells and synthetic pearls and sand. Species from forest planets would always carve a piece of wood in honor of their deads. Some knit and sew pieces of fabrics and change those regularly so that this sort of altar is always covered by resistant and clean clothes.
Maybe some of those places with spiritual or personal significances would be important for many different species and cultures, and as such would be covered in vastly different creations and arts, proofs of various practices unified by one place, one person, one belief.
But yes, in between the flashy adds and enormous metal constructions, in the middle of all this display of cyberpunk that Coruscant can be at times, little places for faith and love and grief and hope, covered in traditional or less traditional art and productions. Just people, common people, living on that planet and marking it as theirs, putting hints of their lives everywhere they can and want.
