okay but REALLY excited about Odysseus being in Hades 2, I missed the first time they talked to him in the dev technical test stream, so I don't know what exactly his role is in terms of narrative specifics and character vibing, but I'm really interested in seeing how they adapt him as a character into particularly this story with Chronos

There is currently a rather large discussion ongoing about the RW fandom behavior, drama, etc. I am not going to talk about the specifics of whats happened for a number of reasons. But what I do want to say is that if at any point you've harassed people over it, whether that be through anon asks or public posts- you did nothing but damage the ability for people to correctly process what is happening. You contributed nothing but harm to an already delicate situation. It does not matter what "side" you were on and I will not tolerate further interaction with me or my work if I found out you did such. If you let your personal hate for anyone boil over into threats, wishes for long term harm and petty comments meant to contribute nothing but slander or mental distress for the individuals involved who were already distressed (or acting irrationally) you did nothing but make it harder for people to process their emotions, thoughts and behaviors constructively. Regardless of who you think was in the right, who fucked up, whatever. It doesn't matter if they deserved it, or earned it, or if its an eye for an eye. Its difficult enough as it is to think clearly when presented with any kind of stressful situation and heckling people does nothing but make it worse and harder for them to explain themself in any capacity. I don't want you anywhere near me if you think that is an acceptable way to act.

I want to cheer on as many people as possible! Since I’ve already done posts for these four in previous rounds, I’ve decided to do one for all of them together! All of them are my friends, so please vote for them!

- Rifty is kind and fun to be around! They’re also purple, which is the best colour. They went out of their way to pose for me to help me draw their horns last time I drew them, and I think that’s really nice of them! I still need to do something for them to repay the favour. This post doesn’t count!

- Peony is smarter than most adults I’ve met, and she’s even younger than my little sister! She has really cool soul magic powers, and even though she’s much smarter than me, she isn’t ever mean to me about it. In fact, she’s a real sweetheart! And her parents are really nice too!

- When I first met Noir, I thought he seemed really cool and I wanted to be friends with him. But now that I am friends with him, I can see that in fact… he is really cool! He’s nice to kids and I respect that a lot! He also once offered to scare away anyone who bullied me. I’d do the same for him!

- Mr Mapobas is a royal mage! He’s very important! And yet he’s been really nice to me and offered me lots of advice, even though I’m just some random noddy who does magic tricks for a living. He’s one of my favourite people to talk to. And he’s super fashionable! And he has cool hair!

It's all about Nagi living alone in a tiny one bedroom, one bathroom apartment with zero personality and Reo having a whole floor for himself but still living surrounded by tacky-expensive home decor with no apparent traces of his actual personality, either. It's all about how Nagi's parents haven't visited him in 2 years nor taken an interest in his life since, while Reo's are content to live floors apart from their teenage son, only taking an interest in what value he can bring to Mikage Corp but being otherwise uninvolved in / dismissive of his actual life. It's all about them being surrounded by people and still not knowing how to form a meaningful connection with another person before meeting each other. It's all about them being so starved for genuine human warmth to combat their bone-deep loneliness that they both treasure memories of tiny, inconsequential moments where they were spending time with their parents. Something something it's this line,

and how it describes them both despite being said about Reo. It's them being awkward 17-year-olds who had never before had an equal who would just respect them as they are and unconditionally look their way. In this essay I will-

Secret Mission has had a hugely disproportionate effect on my life. I have for a long time left places by saying "off and away?" but ever since I watched this show it is invariably (if reluctantly) followed by "but first another drink" and comically off-tune da da da da da da da das. So yeah, vote secret mission for permanently breaking my brain.

I’m not sure if it’s my ultimate favorite bc I’m mega indecisive but Secret Mission is so iconic. I’ve sent it to everyone I’ve ever played D&D with and they all love it.

i feel like i just got so used to ciri and how natural ciri and geralt’s relationship left, via being introduced to the witcher via witcher 3, and then reading the middle of the saga before i finished the short stories…

that i never really innately picked up on the fact that ciri turning out to be geralt’s daughter and not his son was… uhm, part of the entire surprise, let’s put it that way :’)

geralt and ciri are just soooo natural as a father and daughter duo that i can’t imagine it any other way, if ciri had been a boy this would have been way less remarkable as a series, there would be no witcher series as we know it. so to me ciri being a girl was the normal and default, expected way things were supposed to go.

even when i read a question of price-sword of destiny-something more for the first times, i was like “ok” when ciri being a girl was a switch of expectations: geralt (and, supposedly, the reader) having expected pavetta to have a son. like… “alright, it’s a girl, so what.”

i had to be informed about how this was an intentional shock… not only because i’m not a parent, but i mean, well, ultrasounds get mixed up all the time, right… it’s not so uncommon to have a kid and be surprised by the gender…

and because of this, i was more inclined to eyeroll at blood of elves being preachy with going over ciri’s biological sex what seemed like ten million times in chapters two and three… what with the whole “daughter has her first period” subplot, ciri upset over her lack of potential strongmanship, and the witchers mostly relying on triss for guidance in raising a girl. the moral being both “just raise her like any other child” and “be sensitive to her needs that you’re blind to…”

although i still think these segments have visibly aged and date the series (not inherently a bad thing, just a quality of it)… they do make more sense when i try to empathize more with the perspective of a new father… who didn’t know he was receiving a girl… who thought she died… who only got her back through a miracle… and having to raise a girl… that’s not a young child anymore, not yet a teen, but is very shortly going to start going through puberty?! it’s like growing up in the desert, just learning what water is, and then getting thrown into the ocean.

because “having to raise a girl” still doesn’t seem that strange to me, but then i remember geralt didn’t see a woman and only had heard about them as a concept until he was an adult (because “warrior-monk” realness), he grew up with a hole in his heart that his absent mother bore, he lives in a highly gendered society, he experiences hostility from everybody of course but especially from women and girls, who take fright at him for… specific reasons explained by the old women in edge of the world…

no, geralt’s not helpless, but i forget, because he acts normal, but… (i mean, although he has issues, he could have really gone off his rocker with regards to women, a little sacrifice confirms this and vilgefortz embodies this) i forget that geralt’s inexperience with women… mostly manifesting in anxiety and both uncertain and impulsive behavior… like ghosting with a nosegay of flowers, the “dear friend” and all… would affect his view of the gender as a whole, including how he sees ciri. and it does.

in his situation, yes, having to raise a girl does intensify the element of “what the fuck am i doing”. especially as a single dad.

and although i do like it when the pov shifts from geralt in the saga but just to another person in the room, for how he becomes more of a distant and enigmatic figure, seeing him through others’ eyes always makes fills me with this uncertainty. buuuut, i would fucking adore blood of elves chapters two and three through geralt’s eyes just for how much of an emotional wreck he must have been… and trying not to show it to her :(

Not All Death Scenes are the Same

or, why it’s been five years and i still want to challenge andy muschietti to a duel over the death of eddie kaspbrak

Eddie was always going to die. He’s mirrored to both characters who open the cycle of It on-screen; his death is the tragedy that finally ends It’s cycle for good. But in It Chapter Two his death is not given the same weight as Georgie or Adrian, and it’s not the tragedy it is in the novel. There are a few reasons for this. Let’s start with the setup.

Eddie is an anxious person, but that doesn’t make him a coward. This has been said before, but in both final confrontations with It, he acts when the other Losers are frozen. As a kid, he ignores the voice of his mother when his friends are in trouble; his love for them (and theirs for him) helps him be brave. He may have been the last to agree to fight as an adult, but he followed through. And most importantly, he knew what he was doing when he attacked It, which brings us to the death scenes themselves.

Here is my biggest problem with movie!Eddie’s death: he doesn’t see it coming. He threw the fence post at It, thought he killed It, and ran to Richie, triumphant. When he gets stabbed, it’s through the back. His death is a shock to himself and the audience. No amount of Bill Hader screaming for him will make up for this.

In the novel, Eddie runs at It and sprays It with his inhaler, which he believes with all the power of his childhood belief will hurt It like battery acid. And it does. He wounds It, gets It’s attention, and keeps fighting. His arm ends up in It’s mouth and he sprays more battery acid down It’s throat. He saves Bill and Richie at the cost of his own life, knowing the danger he’s put himself in and doing it anyway because they’re his friends and he’s brave. By taking that away from the scene, you are taking away a core part of his character and cheapening his death. Which unfortunately leads us to…the joke.

This might actually be the most egregious part of his death. I will grant a slight amount of grace to the movie for the fact that it is, in fact, a movie, and conveying the internal machinations of a character is a difficult thing to do in a movie without coming across as cheesy. But why…why did they have him make an “I fucked your mom” joke as his last words, to Richie of all people?

Novel!Eddie has a moment of perfect clarity in which he feels all the impurities leave him, like cleaning a glass so all the light can shine through. He’s dying, but he finds total peace…almost. As Richie cries over him, Eddie touches his cheek. He wants to tell him something. And while he’s thinking it over, he dies.

The first time I read that scene, I cried for the rest of the book. And the movie just makes me angry. Making his last words a joke has none of the impact of an unfinished thought. Refusing to let that moment be serious makes it cheap. The source material is not perfect, but Eddie’s death very nearly is. He was brave and he saved his friends and he wanted to say something. It’s a goddamn tragedy! So let it be tragic.

There are a lot of ways to make a character’s death hit the audience like a truck. And It Chapter Two just does not land the jump. The end.

(PS if you were going to mirror the scene in chapter one with ben and bev, eddie should have kissed richie to get him out of the deadlights. im right, cowards.)
