Thinking. Abt this but with Bones. Like. Post-Tholian Web? Post-Mirror Mirror?

For AOS, could be after Into Darkness and/or Beyond.

A Bones who's just. So anxious. So stressed. So overwhelmed that it starts taking a toll on his health. Maybe he doesn't even realise - or maybe he does and tries his best to push through it until it knocks him on his ass. Kind of in the vein of "You don't actually know how tired you are until you stop. And then you just physically cannot start again." It becomes his new baseline, a problem that just brews and storms in the distance.

And he just carries on. And keeps going and going and going until one day he realises that 'Oh fuck, I'm not okay' and has about 5 seconds of warning before he straight up collapses, doesn't matter if it's on the bridge, in the madbay, on a planet - he's going down. (Maybe a repeat of Tholian Web where he just straight up faints into Spock's arms? Full whammy, why not)

Maybe it's a high-tension situation getting resolved that does it. The pure relief of it reminds him of how tired he is. How tired he's been for a while. His body sees that momentary rest and goes "More of that, please. And I'm not asking."

And he's so rendered by it that he doesn't grumble about being coddled like he normally would when he wakes up. He knows not to fuck with the medbay staff - they're just as firm as he is on recovery, and that's not by accident - and he knows that Spock and Kirk will be hovering, because they see any problem as something they, too, should shoulder the burden of.

...And because they're some of the most protective people in the damned universe. And that goes for pretty much all the people on board the Enterprise.

In some scenarios, it's just a case of letting his body and mind rest properly. In others, there's a lot more recovery involved than anyone initially expects. Luckily for him, he has a found family who are determined to be there with him at every step. It just takes a couple reminders, every once in a while.

you keep this homemade soup to yourself, and you've made too much. it simmers, you keep it warm for yourself, and nobody else. you long to share, but you're insecure, or afraid. what if they don't accept the offer, or what if they don't enjoy it? what if they push it away? it's slowly boiling. you made too much, and it could overflow any moment, but you're trying to hard to keep it under control. you don't want it to spill out. part of you wants it to, but it'd be a mess, right? your heart longs to love someone, to express love to those around you, but you're afraid. you keep it inside, along with so many other things, and can't bring yourself to properly express it. it's probably someone in specific you want to love, but something is in the way, a block of sorts. let yourself love freely. share your love, for you have so much of it inside of you.

i like to think that aos bones has an interesting relationship with parenthood...

especially pertaining to his relationship with jim. not that he sees jim as his son, necessarily (i don't think they're deliberately portrayed that way in canon, nor do i headcanon them like that, but honestly fandom is fun because we all have fun in our sandbox, so if anyone happens to see them that way, neat!)

but when you're a parent, and at the same time a parent friend, it's easy to take the path of least resistance when it comes to defining the undefinable relationship you have with this guy you can't seem to live without.

is he your captain? your best friend? your patient? a command prodigy and a tactical genius? a sight for sore eyes? your personal nuisance? the one and only person you can't seem to get rid of, who drags you places you hate and points out everything beautiful to you and beams like he won the lottery when you can't help but grin just a little, who brings the light back into places you forgot could be lit up like the dawn, who saw you at your worst while actively at his own worst, and plopped his fool ass down and decided you were worth fighting for?

and that's a lot of things. especially many when you're fighting tooth and nail to keep his scrap-happy ass intact and also keep an eye on a whole starshipful of people. it's a lot easier to stick to what you know-- whatever is the least risky, the safest option, one that could never possibly backfire and bite you in the ass. sometimes you forget he could see you as anything other than a parent (give or take the friend.) but parenthood goes hand in hand with grief. parenthood has its own set of burdens. but it's easy to put yourself in that box and pretend to forget about all the other boxes, collecting dust in the closet, and sometimes he prods at the closet door with something pleading in his eyes. you pretend not to see that, either.

if  he  had  a  chance  to  see  this  is  what  he  would  be  doing  today  as  who  he  used  to  be  before  Khan  happened,       he’d  freak  out       &       fly  to  the  next  galaxy.       instead  of  wallowing  in  pity,       he  blindly  follows  his  feelings  for  the  blonde  like  they  are  the  north  star,       perhaps  he’s  too  intense,  a  bit  too  soon,       but  he’s       SURE       of  what  they  have  that  he  no  longer  sees  a  reason  to  stop.      

he  let  his  issues       &       insecurities  hurt  them  enough.

❝          i’m  gonna  have  to  go  against  what  i  said  and  ask  you  out       RIGHT  NOW.       all  bets  are  off  if  i  can’t  be  close  to  you.       too  bad,       again.          ❞       as  soon  as  she  leans  back,       he  flops       &       lays  down,       his  head  fallen  on  her  lap,       his  ten  fingers  lacing  together  against  his  own  chest.       he  looks  up  at  her  with  a  heavy  expression.

FOR SOME REASON, IT FEELS as if her all emotions are currently sitting on her chest, making it impossible for her to convey how she's feeling. a part of her can sense the little bit of hesitation left somewhere deep inside. casual optimism is how she had approached anything involving James. apparently, all the years of holding back won't be easy to SHAKE OFF.

he's patient, waiting for her to slowly come around to his displays of affection. all she wants to do is bury her face against his neck, but she can't. the SOFT kiss lulls her worries, making her smile back at him.

Loving AOS is to love a flawed entity. On the one hand I'm continually amazed at how spirky it is. On the other hand, it's at the expense of Uhura. Anyway, the way that ST:ID was so fkn spirky. My god. Do you know how many AOS spirk fics are set immediately after Jim wakes up in the hospital? A lot. A fkn lot.
