The MV and lyrics both work together to portray the experience of being an OFW/having an OFW parent. OFWs, or overseas Filipino workers, refer to Filipinos who go abroad in search of jobs that have better pay, so that they can remit money back to their families in the Philippines.

Okay here’s my attempt at a book roundup this year—sorry in advance that this is like, half my reviews of various Expanse books, and then half my thoughts about Lestat. What can you do! I did not read as widely or diversely as I would have liked this year but. there's always next year I suppose. I’ve also included all the manga we read for book club, because it was on the same list where I was keeping this already!

January

Caliban’s War, James S. A. Corey

This is the second book in The Expanse, a series which I am now on the homeward stretch of. Have not seen the show, will get around to it someday, I really want to see Shohreh Aghdashloo say fuck. I’ve been switching back and forth a bit but mainly listening to these on audio—Jefferson Mays does a really great job as narrator, I highly recommend the audiobooks.

Very broadly, The Expanse is about a universe where humanity has gone to the stars and is in the process of terraforming Mars, as well as spreading out to a handful of space stations, moons, and bits of the asteroid belt. This has created a big new avenue of social stratification between people from Earth or Mars (who have their own political sniping between each other), and people from the Belt, an underclass that is constantly getting fucked over. We follow a variety of characters, but mainly the authors’ meow meow James Holden and the crew of his stolen-from-Mars-technically-but-don’t-worry-about-it-ship The Rocinante as Holden stumbles his way into various political problems. Also, some alien technology has just shown up and it is so so bad!

In general I’ve really enjoyed these books—there's faction politics, there's interesting worldbuilding, there's alien artifacts that will fuck you up every time. I appreciate the constantly shifting status quo—it’s a series that is really, really not afraid to blow things up. The characters are great, and my only real complaint is occasionally slamming into “oh this is sci-fi written by two white guys, it’s time to be weird about race or about women” disease. Also there’s a thread of like, bordering on evopsych running through its philosophy that everyone in the world seems to subscribe to and I just don’t think that’s true of every character! 

ANYWAY with all that background out of the way, this one was one of my favorites of the series! It has Bobbie Draper, Martian marine forced by circumstances into being a political pawn, which she hates, and Chrisjen Avasarala, UN bureaucrat and bitchy foul-mouthed grandma of my heart who knows better than everyone else and who loves maneuvering political pawns, and I am in love with them both. Also scary alien science monsters!

Dungeon Meshi, Ryoko Kui

Not much to say about this. Dungeon Meshi is simply very good! No one else is doing it like Kui! 

Thus Was Adonis Murdered, Sarah Caudwell

The first Hilary Tamar mystery! Thank you to blot for recommending to me I enjoy them so much! These are lighthearted mystery novels about a group of barristers in London in the … 80s?, narrated by their pal Professor Hilary Tamar, who loves to come down from Oxford to visit and will do absolutely anything to get a chance to be nosy and not do actual work. "Anything", in most cases, is solving a murder. These books are very dryly funny and every character is a delight. This one is about dear sweet idiot Julia almost getting arrested for murder, a thing that seems to happen to her a lot. These are so fun! Big recommend! 

Abaddon’s Gate, James S. A. Corey

Expanse book three. Having talked up Caliban’s War, I think this is actually my least favorite Expanse book so far. It has a lot of fun features: introduces one of the more status quo changing alien artifacts, has my favorite scary way for alien artifacts to kill you (INERTIA!!), and one of the main characters is daughter of a thwarted big picture antagonist from book one who wants to ruin Holden’s life. This is a great premise but I just felt kind of cheated of her and Holden having a direct confrontation before Clarissa decides to not be evil after all, and apparently that annoyed me enough to not have very fond memories of this book despite having just listed a bunch of things I love. Ah well!

The Shortest Way to Hades, Sarah Caudwell

Second Hilary Tamar! Also great. This is the best one due to it is the gayest one.

A short manga written by the author of Nana about fashion, dropping out of high school, and relationship problems. Did not hit the heights of Nana but this was fun! Wish it had been less transphobic and homophobic but. The 90s. The fashions, as you might expect, are VERY good.

The Masqueraders, Georgette Heyer

Have been slowly working my way through Heyers on and off and this was the next one on my list! We follow a brother and sister who are both crossdressing as part of a Scheme (and because they’re like, undercover Jacobites or something, I forget). Not my favorite Heyer, but I really enjoyed the romance between Prudence and her Big Guy, and Robin’s romance was also cute, although I think it would be much improved by allowing him to be a lesbian. Have come to find Heyer’s classism kind of funny, and it’s always exciting to try to figure out how people are going to actually turn out to be nobles, because there’s no WAY she’s going to let someone of high birth marry a commoner! (I liked the switched at birth plot in These Old Shades better.)

Cibola Burn, James S. A. Corey

I got annoyed with this book a quarter of the way through and took a two month break but once I got back to it I did enjoy it a lot. In this one Jim Holden and his ragtag crew go to a newly settled world to try to mediate a property dispute between the inhabitants of the world and the company that technically owns all their shit. Really fun alien artifact stuff in this one, some characterization of the female scientist that made me feel crazy, etc. Classic Expanse!

Death in the Spires, K.J. Charles

One member of a group of friends at Oxford is murdered, and the rest of them are Haunted By This and their lives are ruined in various ways—until ten years later, when they begin getting letters accusing them of the crime and it’s time to solve it Once And For All. I’m a big big fan of K.J. Charle’s romances, mainly because my ideal romance has a murder in it, so I was very excited to read a mystery from her! I did come out of this one wishing…uh…that the love interest was Worse. Sorry. Otherwise I had a great time!

Nemesis Games, James S. A. Corey

My favorite Expanse so far! This one is very big on wrecking the status quo, and gives us POV from the whole main crew of the Rocinante. This vitally means we get POV from my special little guy Amos Burton, a tough, amiable bruiser with nothing behind the eyes who outsources his moral compass to Holden because he does not come with one preloaded. He is my favorite. Also, this book at least did something interesting with the central heterosexual ship that I do not really care about, by getting into Holden’s girlfriend Naomi’s questionable past.

I’m going to be honest, I was trying to look a few things up and realized this book and Nemesis Games are the same book in my mind, and I barely remember what actually happened in it. Since I loved Nemesis Games I guess that means it was good! I found it a little scattered (instead of having four main POVs, like most books in this series, it bounces around to a bunch of characters), but fun. 

The Sirens Sang of Murder, Sarah Caudwell

Third Hilary Tamar! Still great! 

The Ministry of Time, Kaliane Bradley

Oh, The Ministry of Time. Our unnamed protagonist is hired as a “bridge”, someone whose role it is to help acclimate, monitor, and otherwise Be In Charge Of people that the British government has plucked out of time. Because they have time travel now. Our protagonist is assigned to Graham Gore, a guy from the lost Franklin Expedition (who died in episode two of The Terror).

I really wanted to like this book! I enjoyed many aspects of it! I ultimately thought it was very mid. It brings up a lot of interesting ideas about complicity in empire that I found interesting but not fully explored, and I figured out a central twist early and instead of that making me feel smart it made me feel crazy and like the protagonist was an idiot. Her complete lack of curiosity about the very clear and VERY DANGEROUS spy machinations going on in this book—which she should be at least a little attentive to, as someone working for a secret government agency! were incredibly frustrating.

I really support the Graham Gore RPF hustle though and hope Bradley makes five million dollars. Also, I loved the fifteenth century lesbian so so so much and she and the protagonist should have made out.

Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice

Obviously, tv iwtv drove me to insanity, so I picked this up in Barnes and Noble intending to read a bit of it in store and then just bought it. It is completely impossible for me to think or talk about these books not in conversation with the show. The rumors are true, book Louis is kind of a wet blanket compared to show Louis. Book Daniel is very funny. I enjoyed thinking about the adaptational changes they made in the show and also saying to myself what do you MEAN lestat's dad was still around in nola?? Also, no one told me these books were actually gay. I cannot emphasize enough how much they are just straightforwardly gay. Anne Rice has very interesting ideas about interpersonal relationships and agonies, and then some really crazy ideas about everything else.

Lady Eve’s Last Con, Rebecca Fraimow

A con artist In Space is out for revenge on the guy who broke her sister’s heart: she’s going to make him fall in love with her instead, and then swindle him for all he’s worth. Except…what’s that? It’s her target’s incredibly hot sister? Uh oh!!! Loved the romance here and REALLY loved the Sisters of it all. An absolute delight, and can confirm from experience your Jewish mother will love it too!

The Vampire Lestat, Anne Rice

I’m not summarizing Lestat’s life. Suffice to say he’s got a lot going on. I have to admit I really enjoyed this, and it made me kind of Lestat-pilled. All of Anne’s problems out in full force here: she gets more opportunities to be orientalist, and also made me read 100 fucking pages of Marius backstory. But also, Armand is there and he is so so so crazy? Have you heard about this? Lestat is doing little meow meow shit? It’s also written from his completely deranged POV and, I’ve got to say, I understand why Anne was so obsessed with him. He is such a funny narrator. Why did he write about making out with his mom in his IN UNIVERSE PUBLISHED AUTOBIOGRAPHY? He’s Lestat, you simply cannot stop him.

Fullmetal Alchemist, Hiromu Arakawa (reread)

What is there to say about Fullmetal Alchemist. It’s very good. 

August-September

This was the point at which my job kind of blew up so the only thing I read was ¾ of Queen of the Damned, which I still have not finished. The thing about QotD is it has a completely bizarre structure, the main villain has motivations I don’t care about and Lestat is stuck with her for a big chunk of the book, and once again Anne is just really on one. On the other hand, yeah the Daniel and Armand stuff is just as crazy as everyone told you. Who can say if it’s good or bad? Me, maybe, if I ever finish it!

Sunshine, Robin McKinley

Decided to continue my vampire kick by reading this, a book blot did not believe I had never read before. For good reason, as if I read this at age fourteen I would have never ever shut up about it (this is also true of iwtv). Sunshine is set in a post-apocalyptic world a few years out from a war between humans and magical creatures, the worst of which are vampires. Our main character, Sunshine, literally lives in a bakery AU before she gets kidnapped by vampires, along with a SEPARATE sexy vampire guy who has also been kidnapped. They team up, etc, you know where this is going! I had a lot of fun with this book—I’m a simple woman, I love a romance with a brooding vampire. The worldbuilding is also very, very interesting and not a lot of it is directly explained to you, which I always appreciate. It takes like 50 pages before we even mention the vampire wars that fucked everything up. Meanwhile, structurally, this book is insane, and it would have benefited from like 100 pages being cut. Still loved it!

Silver Spoon, Hiromu Arakawa

I think Hiromu Arakawa might be good at writing manga? Silver Spoon is a charming slice-of-life manga about a kid who cracks under academic pressure from his school and family, and says fuck it and goes to farm high school in Hokkaido. It’s very different from Fullmetal Alchemist but has a lot of Arakawa’s charm and humor, and is obviously very inspired by her life growing up in Hokkaido. Genre-wise, I’m always going to love a FMA type story more, but this is a great story about friendship and valuing yourself. It made me so, so hungry and also yearn to eat fresh food from a farm. The pacing got pretty wonky at the end—it seems like she went on a lot of hiatuses to deal with family things, and it ends up showing.

The Forbidden Book, Sacha Lamb

Sorel runs off on the night of her intended marriage to the rabbi’s son, ends up possessed by a dybbuk, and has to solve his murder, among other things. This had a lot of stuff I like in it—bodysharing where the boundaries get a little blurry! Genders! It did not reach the heights of When The Angels Left The Old Country for me, but I had a lot of fun. 

Fledgling, Octavia Butler

More vampires, but really swerving from Sunshine. Probably NOT my best choice for a first Butler book but here we are. Fledgling is about a young amnesiac vampire, and her attempts to discover who she is and what happened to her family. This book is really weird. I enjoyed it as a thriller, and it was constantly going places I did not expect (last third is like, a vampire courtroom drama. Sure! Why not!), and I liked the vampire society worldbuilding stuff. I was also constantly sitting there like what? What? What? The real barrier to entry here is the protagonist explicitly looks like a ten year old due to how vampire aging works, and also has a lot of sex. I wish that had felt more...necessary? To make up for the fact that I did find it pretty off-putting! I'm sure someone out there has written an interesting essay about this book and Claudia iwtv, which I would like to read.

I started this book immediately after finishing Babylon’s Ashes and was slammed straight into a 30 year timeskip (most of the Expanse books take place at most a few years after the last one). This is an objectively crazy thing to do which I do kind of respect, because we keep many of the same main characters so it is suddenly a cast full of 60+ year olds, which rules. It did lead to me taking a six month break from this series in bafflement though, so, you know.

Also this is very unorganized bc I dont really remember how it exactly played out and I could go back and watch the VOD but ion wanna hear wilburs voice so im using the wiki for this therefore I wont have intricate details

One thing I really like is the flashback at the beginning. Especially the fade from L'manburg to the destroyed L'manburg I love it sm it reminds me of Analog horror series

They then go to Las Nevadas to try and apologize to Q but get ghosted and im pretty sure it was bc of conflicting schedules or smth but the fact that c!tntduo never got a proper ending pisses me off to this day. Okay now im going to lay out my main criticisms I have with the finale and why I think it was somewhat unsatisfying and we c!wilbur fans were kinda fucked over in the end

I understand c!wilbur was afraid of losing him or whatever but it would've shown SO MUCH GROWTH FROM HIM IF HE OUTLOUD SAID "Im sorry" TO THE PERSON HE HURT MOST. Im pissed that presumably cc!wilbur decided not to have that happen. Even if it was bad JUST DO IT. c!wilbur was going to leave anyways so him being scared of losing c!tommy if he apologized wouldn't matter!

My next point is that c!wilbur leaving wasn't thought out enough I think. I do personally think c!wilbur should've left the place that ruined him to heal. That's step one of learning to heal but with the apology tour being a flop and him never verbally apologizing to c!tommy it felt unsatisfying and almost underserved and I see why so many people afterward were like "he doesn't just get to leave". What would've helped I think would've been more streams or longer streams if possible. There was so much shit that needed to be retconned but it wasn't given enough time I feel and thats why to so many ppl they were unsatifyed/upset

Going more into the utah shit. I hate it. I hate the "Plot twist" of him being secretly american and from utah. Not even getting into how the real world is now apparently canon to the dsmp in one of the last few dsmp lore streams. I honestly would've liked it more if it wasn't specifically named what the place was instead it was just home. I also had this idea of instead of him disappearing in the middle of the ocean I think it would've been cooler if c!wilbur took a train somewhere almost like a callback to limbo.

I don't like how its somewhat implied c!wilbur killed himself again. It feels cheap to kill of a already heavily suicidal character AGAIN when instead it genuinely could've been a story about how you can learn to heal and forgive yourself even if you did bad things. Maybe this is just me not wanting my favorite character to die but I don't like it at all

Ghostbur was also handled terribly. I understand why alivebur hated him but I also think it would've shown growth if he learned to accept ghostbur in the end. Even if it wasn't fully

Also why the fuck did we never get the contents of the book c!wilbur gave c!tommy?? You throw that shit in just to never tell us what's in it almost 2 years later??

Final thoughts

I might go back and edit this later with more things but for my final thoughts I think c!wilburs finale +the apology tour was a big unsatisfying flop and I belive c!wilbur fans were unfairly fucked over in the end.

Not to sing brighton biter praise, but I do believe he was a good writer and the fact that the last few streams were this unsatisfying is disappointing coming from him. I mean im sure he just wanted to get c!wilburs finale out so he could be done with it but that's not an excuse for fucking your fans over. There was also probably issues with other ccs and characters since (Imo) a lot of the characters he interacted with in the end don't have the best writing (not meant to insult the ccs btw, just saying)

But personally, I somewhat accept it simply bc this is the best we got and I personally don't like alot of other fan re writes on his ending and I also don't like his ending just being "lol he killed himself again"

ok, so, I wasn’t sleeping bc I probably just have insomnia, possibly my depression, and also I’d just moved in to my dorm and I suck at sleeping in new places, lol, dw tho I slept for like most of the weekend and I’ve been sleeping regularly this week.

I honestly forgot that we don’t actually know wtf the stellaron hunters are actually doing , line they literally could just be lying abt everything. Actually none of them even say anything except Kafka , blade has his own thing going on, silver wolf is usually behind the scenes fucking around and firefly just didn’t say a thing , like come on, TB didn’t even think to ask anything, there was that dreamscape pass thing of whatever it’s called and the quote from 2.3 is like “Once, we dreamed of being strangers.Upon waking up, we realized we had always loved each other.” Which I assume is abt TB and firefly, and I do kind of wish we got some more stuff about TB’s past with the stellaron hunters, especially since firefly was so important, but it’s whatever. I am actually kind of interested in the script, what Elio tells them to say, and the stuff they’re just making up as they go. Especially since firefly’s script for penacony was just a few words (also firefly said she was part of the iris family the acting/performing one bc she carries out scripts). And Kafka was told was to tell TB during her interrogation abt what they’re doing on the Luofu, but I’m not sure if she’s just lying after that 😭Kafka has some explaining to do when she comes back very soon, in the main story.

hsjajsmskdmnx the arrests on the Luofu are so silly tho, especially since jing yuan pardoned her so she’s not technically wanted there anymore BUT I STILL WANT HER even tho she’s literally worth almost 11 billion by the IPC. The IPC stuff kind of bothers me tbh, they’re not the government, but also they’ve got a fair amount of authority, I feel like pardoning the stellaron hunters wouldn’t be allowed, like I don’t understand how Jing yuan did that without getting in trouble 😭 especially with the most wanted one. And topaz APPARENTLY doesn’t know who the stellaron hunters are, in her voice line abt them she said she didn’t know who they were but they had a good credit score ITS KAFKAS CREDIT SCORE SHES THE ONE W THE CARD and like it’s funny bc that means Kafka registered it under her actually name, and no one cares. Like it would’ve been funnier if she said like the wanted criminals, the ones who blah blah blah, but they have a good credit score. And jade knew exactly abt firefly and the other stellarom hunters, and even tho they’re different ranks topaz should know them. Especially considering the fact that they’re pretty infamous, ig I shouldn’t be nitpicking especially since march literally says when in Rome one time, but whatever.

i totally agree with you on the stellaron hunters not revealing anything, i dont really expect them to since we’re still quite early in the game timeline wise but it’s a bit disappointing for the TB to have gotten close to firefly and she never alluded to them knowing each other before, especially when the game’s marketing was pushing romantic implications between them😭 and the trailblazer’s “idgaf” mentality is a bit annoying because i get wanting to move forward and not wanting to be burdened by the past but not being curious at all is… weird. even march, who was repeatedly told not to look into her past, got upset about it at some point. and in the TB’s case, their connection with the stellaron hunters is actively shaping their present/future, so it’s not like they gain nothing from asking a few questions. kafka was the one who encouraged them to get some information from her when they were alone by playing truth or lie, like they don’t care😭 it’s annoying cause i wanna knowwww. a big missed opportunity with firefly imo, we could’ve gotten a pattern of learning a little bit about the trailblazer on every planet they stop by and it’d have been nice. instead all i get is trashcan and raccoon jokes like oh brother are we 8. i wonder what the script actually says, the SH says he always tells the right future but from what we know , it feels super vague. “experiencing 3 deaths” “finding the stellaron in a non-physical way” is not precise at all like how do they even carry those orders😭 no wonder they have liberty to do lots of stuff during missions, there’s barely anything in the damn script

about jing yuan, he’s general of the luofu and the xianzhou has its own regulations and criminal law, the ipc has no control over how they treat their prisoners and their bounties dont really matter to the xianzhou unless they want the money LMFAO, so the ipc has no jurisdiction to punish jing yuan for letting the SH get away. not to mention that the alliance and the ipc have trade agreements and stuff, so their relationship would be damaged and the ipc wouldnt benefit from that. at the end of the day they’re a corporation, they don’t really care for justice.

what bothers me is TOPAZ. IT MAKES NO SENSE. she’s a stoneheart in the same division as jade, sure jade is more cunning and always looking for opportunities to make profits but not knowing them at all is so ridiculous and unrealistic fr. they’ve broken into pier point like twice and that’s her place of work😭😭😭😭😭😭 no way she never heard anything about it to not form an opinion on them. i feel like giving her a voiceline about them was just for the credit score joke which also makes zero sense because why would any of them pay taxes to the corporation that wants them dead or imprisoned. how would the ipc even know which credit card is theirs and why are they doing nothing about it like its so stupid… herta froze all of silver wolf’s accounts cause she was feeling petty but youre telling me the ipc is monitoring their credit scores?.. like im not going to lie i dont take the ipc seriously at all. silver wolf was literally participating in a tournament they sponsored and they just let her compete. like that girl was on the big screen with people cheering her on… for a company that would benefits from civilians fearing/hating the SH, they really dont give a fuck. once again it lowers the stakes and makes the story less exciting for me, and in general it’s inconsistent and weird narration wise to approach heavy themes while simultaneously making a joke of everything. if that makes sense 😭 like the tonal shifts are always very harsh and out of place, it’s one of the things i hate the most about hsr. having the trailblazer crack a stupid joke when everyone’s super serious (which often gets them ignored by dan heng or makes march’s face turn unimpressed, or has her tell them now isnt the time) is starting to annoy me like we get it they’re dumb as rocks omg. when cocolia died at the end of the belobog mission and march’s first words were “well! what an adventure!” in front of bronya hello?!? having no tact in actual serious situations isnt endearing to me like u can just keep ur mouth shut atp

fast & furious stats dump - 2024

it's 2025! let's update my graphs! if you're curious, here's last year's post.

the dombrian resurgence continues! but note that the percentage increase is much more modest. for the first time, the raw number of fast & furious fics posted increased from the year prior in a year without a movie release.

hobbs/shaw is still on the decline, but it's leveled out a little over the past year.

our three main het ships (dom/letty, mia/brian, and han/gisele) have all held fairly steady since 2023.

letty/mia takes second place for the third year running, but it's declined noticeably from its peak in 2023. this is because i got kind of busy with work. sorry about that. 83.7% of letty/mia fic over the last three years was written by me.

mia/vince had a (relative) banner year for the second year running, with a record high of 14 posted fics! unfortunately, none of those were otp:true.

not much has changed in these graphs since last year - the takeaway is just that this has always been a juggernaut-dominated fandom.

so...the raw number of fast & furious fics posted went up, and by a lot. we got 434 fics in 2024 as opposed to just 337 in 2023. but only 15 more dombrian fics were posted in 2024 than in 2023, and it seems like our other ships have largely held steady or declined. what accounts for that increase?

yeah, that would do it. there was a massive increase in f/m ofc fic! gang, i really did not see this one coming. in 2024, f/m was the most popular category for fast & furious fic on ao3 for the first time ever - it's always been m/m, even back when dom/letty and brian/mia were peaking.

this was mostly an increase in ofc f/m for canon male characters - cipher/ofc, which was actually the most popular ofc ship in 2023, declined significantly. what's causing the change? well, as far as i can tell, a handful of prolific authors, as well as migration from wattpad (where fast & furious fandom is much more het- and oc-focused) and an increase in cross-posting to both wattpad and ao3.

there was a corresponding bump in mia/omc, mia/ofc, and letty/ofc fic - but only one letty/omc fic. which i think is very funny.

if you were wondering, dom/oc fic is overwhelmingly f/m. brian/oc (much less common) is almost evenly split. letty/oc is overwhelmingly f/f. mia/oc is mostly f/m, although the ratio isn't as stark.

dom is by far the most popular character for oc shipping, even though brian appears in slightly more fics on the whole. i guess authors want to fuck dom and want to watch someone else fuck brian.

not much to note here compared to last year. mia and vince remain the bridesmaids, never the brides. brian/vince saw a little bump from 2023! dom/letty and mia/brian tend to get almost no otp:true fic, although it's likely that this is because they're often tagged together.

(why did otp:true letty/mia fall off so much? yeah, that was my fault again. i guess i liked dom/letty a little more this year.)

some analysis of trends in tagged relationships:

the most popular secondary ship when hobbs/shaw is tagged is dombrian. but 74.7% of hobbs/shaw fic is otp:true. that makes sense - the vast, vast majority of shobbs fic came from the spinoff, which doesn't include the franchise's main characters.

the most popular secondary ship when dombrian is tagged is mia/brian. 60.9% of dombrian fic is otp:true. why mia/brian and not dom/letty (or pair-the-spares letty/mia)? well, a lot of this is brian-focused canon-divergent first-movie fic where he gets together with both dom and mia, and it seems like writers find it easier to make dom single at the start, which precludes dom/letty. some is also set during the period when letty's "dead." letty can be easier to write out than mia, i think, since she really doesn't play any role in bringing brian into the family.

the most popular secondary ship when brian/mia is tagged is dom/letty, and vice versa - but there are twice as many otp:true dom/letty fics as there are fics for otp:true mia/brian. i don't think this is that surprising. for one thing, dom and letty's relationship is the central focus of the sixth, eighth, and (to a lesser extent) seventh movies, and none of the movies are really equally devoted to mia and brian. fast five probably comes the closest. dom/letty has (or had) a real ride-or-die contingent of shippers, and nothing like that's ever really coalesced around mia/brian.

the most popular secondary ship for letty/mia is dombrian. that's not surprising - it's pair-the-spares. it's just interesting that it doesn't go both ways.

just for fun, i also graphed a couple new datasets this year!

a note i want to make here (not reflected on the graph) is that as you go through the years, you can really see how tagging conventions change. "latino character" and "character of color" get tagged a lot up through 2012. sexuality tags like "bisexual character" are also more popular early on. i feel like i don't see the "slash" tag much anymore.

fast & furious fics were generally less "tropey" this year than in 2023 - fewer fics proportionally were tagged with fluff, angst, and hurt/comfort. "family," though is more popular than ever. vin would approve.

a.u. fic has declined pretty steeply since 2022! i'm honestly not sure why that line looks the way it does. did people just get bored in 2019 because we hadn't had a new movie in a while?

mature was the most popular rating this year! that's only happened one other time, in 2012. generally, fast & furious fandom seems to favor teen & up. you can see that it's not consistent at all year-to-year, though.

as for warnings: huge increase in graphic violence in 2024! it was more popular than ccntw for the first time ever. i guess we were feeling sadistic. more underage fic was posted in 2024 than in any other year, too.

(what's behind that little bump in underage in 2010? not much. a handful of high school a.u.s drove up numbers, and there just wasn't much fic posted that year.)

Q: WHO'S GETTING RAPED? A: brian, mostly.

Q: WHO'S UNDERAGE? A: it's all over the place, but somehow it's almost never jesse. i guess he's already eighteen in the first movie? hoping for more dom/jesse and letty/jesse in 2025.

in summary: most of my 2024 predictions were right! more fast & furious fics were posted, dombrian kept on growing, hobbs/shaw continued to decline, letty/mia also declined slightly, and the post-fast x pairs (rome/little nobody and aimes/reyes) fell off significantly. i was wrong about a big dom/letty increase; there was a huge surge of f/m fandom, but it was pretty much all centered around ofcs.

what about next year?

honestly, i think there will be even more fic posted than this year. i don't think it matters that we're getting further and further out from fast x - most of what's being posted is first-movie fic, anyway.

that increase will be mostly driven by dombrian and ofc fic for every male character in the franchise, especially dom.

the three main het ships and hobbs/shaw will hold steady in numbers, but decline proportionately.

letty/mia will probably continue to decline, unless i suddenly have a ton of new ideas.

lastly, a few notes on methodology: this includes archive-locked fic. i have no way of checking for backdated/redated/reposted fic since i collect this data manually, and fics originally posted before 2024 that were updated in 2024 are double-counted in this dataset. my "major tags" numbers include all fic tagged with synned tags - e.g., "heavy angst" and "light angst" count towards "angst," and "families of choice" counts towards "family." the percentages in the warnings graph will add to more than 100 since fic can be tagged with multiple warnings.

Reading your tags about how people miss the very obvious "there's some fucked up shit boiling underneath" regarding Otto, just gave me a sudden realization. Otto is the only character I know in fiction where they act all innocent and drive up the "clumsy", "just in the side-lines" and "straight-man (heh)" persona. When. Like no one's in the EMT camp is buying it. They know he's way more capable than he let's on. Meanwhile, the tomfoolery is completely brought on by the Western audience.

Like Otto is failing miserably to make other characters believe that he's not up to mischief, Roswaal even thinks it can bring his downfall. But the audience, who even sometimes *sees* his fucked up thought process, is buying it.

no u bring up so many good points bc ive been really thinking about this for a while T^T its such an interesting phenomenon in the difference in perception otto has between the japanese speaking half of the fandom vs the english speaking half which can be explained by—yeah. media illiteracy mainly. im also putting my head in my hands anon T^T

because—okay sorry wkdndn im gonna get into meta again but hear me out bc this pattern of the fandom underestimating otto is interesting bc i kind of sort of i cracked the code maybe??? o.o i think the nature of otto is a character is that youre SUPPOSED to underestimate him at first, just like what happens sometimes in universe. i mean wayyy back then i definitely wasnt expecting him to get more depth added to him in arc 4–which was a pleasant surprise—which is also the reaction the vast majority of people have to reading/watching arc 4, along with the other vast majority reaction which is being a bit endeared to ottosubas friendship and respecting otto for being a good friend. and then its easy to underestimate otto bc of 1. all the chaos going on in rezero at any given moment and 2. hes almost always overshadowed by other characters doing worse shit or being more insane than he is and 3. otto of course damn well knows hes easy to underestimate and counts on that. thats what he did against roswaal in arc 4. plus—i mean even aesthetics-wise hes 100% DESIGNED to be easy to underestimate. his outfit and physical features make him look either friendly or frazzled or soft. so i think that the point is that we were supposed to be kind of fooled—at first.

because yeah, we’re endeared to otto. we respect him for helping subaru the way he did. we think that hes a nice person and we now support his actions especially after feeling sympathetic towards him after learning his backstory. (or at least the average audience member will think this wjdndn.) but like—you dont even NEED to look at any side content at all for it to dawn on you that theres something Wrong. with him. like all you need is main route arcs 3-8 aka ottos entire screentime thus far, because at arc 4 its so easy to overlook otto unless youre thinking a bit deeper (for example—he gets violent with subaru. like yeah its entertaining, its played for laughs a bit, yeah subaru needed to be snapped out of his own head, but was it 100% necessary??? why did otto have this response??? bc if you just look at the main timeline otto really decided to beat up subaru first. and bc this tendency is now Less Funny in arc 8).

but even if youre just looking at rezero face value, when you get to arc 5 its starting to get even more clear that ottos weird in the head. like we already saw him being very good at scheming and planning in arc 4–in arc 5, we find out about otto hiding the tome for a year. we find out WHY hes been hiding the tome for a year. the tome then leads the witch cult into priestella, so like—in the sense, otto is RESPONSIBLE for arc 5. but theres STILL a tendency sometimes for the audience to continue underestimating him even though by this point we’re getting more clues and many characters around otto, like you said anon, KNOW hes very capable. i keep wondering why this is, but arc 5 is, again, FULL of chaos and different storylines happening at once, so its so easy to almost kind of forget otto there in the background until he occasionally pops up again. plus otto serves an additional role as comedic relief sometimes—he spends all of arc 5 being bitchy and whiny (i say this affectionately HAH) about his camp being full of disasters, for example, so i think the natural response from the audience tends to be “aw otto!! what a silly guy!!” sometimes. you know? so its like. i think at this point some people tend to be like “yeah fair that otto was wary of roswaal and thats why he saved the tome…. anyway ooooh whats going on with these other plot points” wobsbss. its so fascinating bc—ok this might be my own personal experience but anyone reading this pls tell me if you agree or not—i dont think ive seen a lot of people actually even MENTION otto bringing the tome into priestella attracting witch cultists. and the english speaking fandom LOVES to go into certain characters’ wrongdoings so why gloss over otto????

the only explanation i have for this is that from arcs 3-4 underestimating otto is. kind of the point of his character UNTIL you get to arc 5 and the clues in the main story start seeping in even more. and also the western audience DOES have media illiteracy a lot. theres that too. just look at rezero content on youtube or reddit or fanfic sites or other things of that sort T^T but no yeah i think ottos nature as a character exacerbates it. youre supposed to start asking questions about him. youre supposed to start connecting the dots and then SUDDENLY its now EXTREMELY obvious in arc 7-8 and even while theres so much chaos going on its basically shoved in your face. arc 7-8 is just delivering on all the leadup that was arcs 3-5.

and i think that youve gotta be media illiterate for sure to NOT get that otto is not squeaky clean and innocent BY ARC 8. i think that ottos the deconstruction of the loyal best friend trope, and also a mirror into what subaru couldve been like if he decided to be more ruthless instead of jumping right to forgiveness and saving everyone, except sometimes that flies right over the audience’s head wkdndnd. it confuses me bc ive seen some people completely miss the point or completely agree with otto and overlook the Bad Parts of it or, you know, STILL think ottos perfectly sane—like T^T please.

and yeah so back to what you said about otto Not being underestimated In Universe—its such an interesting detail bc hes ALWAYS been simultaneously pathetic and Very Competent wjdndnd. but yeah no all of his friends have seen various hints and clues and evidence of what hes capable of. like even though he hid the tome from them successfully and even though hes hiding info now its INEVITABLE that its gonna blow up in his face one day. like you got characters like garfiel who literally saw otto punch the wall and break his hand in an unhinged fit of rage, julius who got snapped at by otto and while julius is a Bit naive definitely knows somethings off there, anastasia whos smart as hell and definitely knows not to underestimate otto, and roswaal who, like you said anon, literally went out of his way to stop otto from breaking his hand in another unhinged fit of rage and warned otto that he will literally be destroying himself if he keeps going on like this. its this fascinating dichotomy bc otto is NOT fooling anyone around him but at the same time his current schemes are mostly unnoticed—for now—which yeah i havent seen that in a lot of media!!! its an interesting balancing act bc people around him realistically know hes competent after seeing the Proof of that for the past couple arcs, but otto is still finding ways to try and Win…

which—again, the anger and violence is an extension of arc 4 otto!! this is the same guy!! hes always been like this!! ottos kind of stayed the same, deep down, this whole time and as an audience its ONLY shoved in our face with a big gigantic spotlight on it FOUR ARCS LATER, but it was hinted to all this time. and like you said anon—we LITERALLY see ottos fucked up thought processes. literally what sane person thinks any of that shit. its spelled right out for the reader HAH T^T which—yeah. media illiteracy…. and also this whole ask was a longer way of just saying that otto is VERY easy to see at surface level if youre media illiterate. but at the same time it should be very easy to figure out otto is A Bit Fucked Up bc tappei underlines it in bright red print!!! i think people sometimes just hang onto soft awkward silly otto and forget about the rest T^T either that or they dont think he cares about subaru at all. which. that phenomenon of thinking characters that do care about subaru Dont Care is also interesting to me bc why????? we’re at arc 8 and you STILL dont get it??? o.ooooo

but yeah apart from that….. i said this earlier but yeah sometimes some people agree with ottos realism in arc 8 which is. understandable, but the whole point is that he is EXTREME. with it. hes Not in the right here, but the same crowd that wants wanton revenge in rezero is gonna agree with that kind of stuff T^T ottos been lurking in the background so much so that tappei made it meta by doing the whole “walking in darkness” part of his character, so i guess people just. dont see ottos ACTUAL worst traits and instead think he would ditch subaru at the first opportunity or something. but at the point we are now, arc 8 ottos problem isnt that hed ditch subaru. his problem is that he would sacrifice the world for subaru. his problem is that he gets extremely angry at subaru for trying to do good. his problem is that hes trying to micromanage everything around him and is willing to sacrifice anything necessary to get what he wants. but sometimes people dont get that bc otto doesnt look sound or seem like a character thatd do that. the Underestimation part of his character is doing too well on. certain audiences. please T^T the soft and awkward and silly parts ARE part of his character just like all the Darker parts are!!!

additionally im also wondering if western audience perception of otto is also clouded by the fact that otto looks and sounds more feminine / androgynous and he doesnt have the appeal of Overt Power either……. he cant Really be waifu-ified… and he cant be used as a weird self insert like subaru…. and you Have to look at him closer to understand him…. and for some reason people dont tend to hate on him so aggressively, if anything people cant even see his actual canonical flaws half the time wkdndn so if youre not paying attention otto CANT be aggressively hated on bc theres nothing there if ur not looking at it….. and if youre not paying attention otto seems more “boring” compared to the others…… (not that people arent allowed to not have otto as a favorite character bc thats totally fair but im talking about the tendency to think hes Saner than he actually is.) but yeah these are just my guesses. i have no clue the western fandom is a little T^T some people unfortunately cannot read.

EEEK! I AM SO SORRY!!! this took a while 2 answer cuz i wrote a whole frickin ESSAY! i guess thats what happens when u ask tumblr user klavery 2 talk about klavery, lol.... ANYWAYS,

ok ok omg... firstly i want 2 warn that i clearly take them wayy too seriously and romanticize the fuck out of them and its rly embarrassing bcuz they are stupid but i am just too gone 4 them at this point so 😊👍

SO LIKE!!! avery being aspec + autistic in my minds eye affects pretty much everything abt their relationship 2 romance & dating & stuff... so that & the fact theyre like a dorky awkward nerd to me makes them pretty passive & nervous abt romance stuff, at least at first! avery seems like they could b the suave confident type when it comes 2 romance, which is the kind of person i think their character develops into once they get the hang of it (still a silly dork tho OF COURSE). that being said, in the beginning, avery wasnt usually the one to initiate things often! klara was his first everything... his first crush, his first kiss, everything like that (as opposed to klaras like, 20 exes, lol) so he was kind of inexperienced XP

the development of their relationship is like... at first they HATED each other, they found each other so ANNOYING and INSUFFERABLE, naturally... until a little problem in the form of a 13 year old child showed up at the dojo. apparently this kid was enough of a mutual threat to get the two of them to tolerate each other enough to reluctantly team up... also can i say they r literally like cartoon antagonists to me? they are SO funny and dumb i am SO obsessed... anyways! after the whole main plot of the isle of armor is over, they still kinda almost, try 2 awkwardly ignore each other? tsunderes... they cant admit theyre growing fond of each other xP and after a while, that strategy just doesnt work out :p they continue 2 train at the dojo, and this soon leads 2 them becoming friends! this part is integral 2 me 4 the development of their relationship, they become total besties, they r such galpals........

after some indeterminate amount of time after becoming friends, avery finally falls for her. i headcanon klara was always attracted to him, even when she hated him, lol. they were like two freaks who were perfect partners in crime. they get really close and affectionate, even platonically ❤ ... u can tell how crazy i am over enemies to friends to lovers for them xP

so with ALL THAT in mind.... i think klara would ask first? technically? i mean klara would b the kind of person 2 want someone 2 confess their undying love 4 her, but avery was kindaa weird. i dont think they would have EVER asked her directly tbh.... they were soo confused abt their feelings hehe, abt her but also abt dating in general. klara kinda knew abt the latter, considering avery would have opened up 2 her abt it in my brainspace. i guess knowing this she would just shoot her shot & suggest that they could date! avery is so nervous.... he panics and says he needs time 2 think on it, and when he finally recomposes himself hes all like, Ahem, Klara, I Would Like To Formally Accept Your Ever So Gracious Invitation.. hehehe.... he was so funny.

Going off of voice alone, I could very well see this as a voice claim for Juni- but the song doesn't fit her. It actually made me think of Emma!

I'm still working on her sheet, but in short, before Emma ended up with her current family she did have some troubles in her past; with her biological family, former relationships and life in general.

Right off the bat I knew this song would fit her. Emma was born to a wealthy family around the 1900's, all of which were magic - except for her, so she always felt that loneliness. She dressed up pretty, to be shown off by her dad, but at the end of the day she was very very miserable. She felt like the main attraction of a circus whenever her dad would show her off-

She grew out of it tho, and so did her powers as they developed! (By almost burning her half brother alive by accident but oh well. Sometimes tou gotta blow up un flames at the dinner table) and then she became more confident in herself and her ideals.

^ the last line makes me think of her magical-pureblood lineage, and how she was seen as lesser because she didn't have powers for so long.

Ok, funny thing is. Emma was a thief for much of her life after she ran away from home (away from that family). She lived in the slums of France for a couple years as she took upon herself to try and get a chance to get away from Europe (her plans were to travel to Brazil, so she could study the magical plants found there; she was on her way to be a Magical-herbologist)

... But as First World War happened she saw herself having to deal with it and her plans were cut short. She decided to enlist as a nurse ans so she did, until she found herself falling head over heals for this stupid haunted soldier man who needs a name but i'm a lazy shit :> (and they were hunted down by the Creatures of Shadows until they were found and rescued by Miss Seagull but that's besides the point)

She was stuck there on a Time Loop for all of about 80(?) years. 80 years of everyday being the same summer day, unable to move on from her love until the loop colapsed and they were forced to flee- and her mind came crumbling down on her because while she was stuck, he mooved the fuck on and grew old and fucking died (this bit here was inspired by MPHFPC, so yeah,,,)

I think that, overall, the whole episode is fine. it makes its point, but I dont like the execution. also the bright colors of the screens makes it very difficult for me to watch. The afternoon sun peeked through the leaves of the tree I laid under. The dancing light cast shadows on the ground that fluttered and shifted with each gust of wind. I stretched out on a blanket situated a few feet away from the base of the giant oak tree. Its trunk seemed to stretch up into the sky for miles, from my vantage point. The twisted branches intertwined to create a beautiful pattern. I breathed in fresh, crisp fall air as another breeze washed over me.

"Hannah," Kyle spoke, breaking me out of my daze. I turned my head to the right and looked up at him. He smiled at me before stroking my hair idly. "I was just making sure you weren't falling asleep on me."

I giggled softly and reached up to my head, putting my hand on top of his. "I was looking at the tree."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. Here, look," I instructed, patting the blanket beside me. "Lay down and look up, you'll see what I mean." Kyle scooted over and laid down, blonde curls splaying like a golden crown around his head. "Look at how the branches weave together."

"It's pretty," he replied simply. "Not as pretty as you, though." I blushed, turning my head to once again face him. He propped himself up on his elbow and leaned down to kiss me. He stopped, suddenly.

"Hannah," he said.

"What?"

"Hannah," he repeated, louder. "Hannah!"

My eyes shot open at the sound of Lily's voice. Her hands grasped my arm tightly, shaking me awake. I sat up slightly to signal to her that she could stop manhandling me. Words couldn't quite come to my lips just yet.

"Christ, Han," Lily groaned, stepping back and grabbing my phone off of my nightstand. "Can you turn this shit off? Damn!"

I didn't even hear my alarm going off. Wordlessly, I grabbed my phone from her and unlocked it, tapping the necessary items to shut the racket off. My eyes still felt bleary, reality still not quite setting in. 

"Sorry," I croaked. It was about all I could manage.

"Are you even okay? Jesus," she asked, annoyance still coloring her tone. "You're still in jeans, babe."

I looked down, and to my own shock, found that I was still in yesterday's clothes. I stayed up almost all night reworking my horrible poem. I didn't even give myself time to get changed after getting home. I took breaks only for food and the bathroom, but even still I wasn't happy with the final product.

"I stayed up late doing homework," I replied, finally looking Lily in the eyes. She wore a light layer of makeup. Her hair was up and held back with a bright pink cloth headband. She was dressed and ready for class, in total contrast to me. "What time is it?"

"9:30," she answered. "Your alarm's been going off for like two hours. I think you missed your class." 

"Yep, I fuckin' did, huh?" I sighed, flopping back heavily onto my pillow. "This is so backward. You're going to class and I skipped mine."

"I have to today," she replied, sighing as well. "It's our first exam. Yay, History of American Education!" She was entirely sarcastic, of course. She sat on the edge of my bed and put her hand on my arm.

"I had the weirdest dream," I whispered, looking off into space. "I was on a date or something."

"Oooh, with who?" Lily teased. For a second, I couldn't quite remember. In the way that dreams tend to leave your head as soon as you open your eyes. Then, it dawned on me. My eyes widened slightly.

"Y-you know, I can't really remember," I stammered, too embarrassed to admit the truth.

"Well, that's boring, then. I thought you were going to say something funny like Leon or Channing Tatum," she complained, standing to leave.

"Ew, Lily," I cringed. "Channing Tatum? Really?"

"What? He's disgustingly handsome," she returned, beginning to walk out of the room. "You're like, the only girl that doesn't think that. It would be so funny if you had a sex dream about him."

"You're so fucking gross! Leave!" I cackled, throwing a pillow at her as she walked out the door. 

"Bye, love you!" she called back.

"Love you," I grumbled in reply, turning onto my side. I stared at the wall across from my bed, straight at the David Bowie poster I had hung up. He stared back at me with his piercing bi-colored eyes, his bright orange hair blazing majestically. 

Oh, David, I thought. I think I'm fucked.

Before long, the sun set and it became time to walk over to 1024 Broadway Street.

Just come over at 7. 

I stared at the text Kyle sent, reading it over almost every minute. I was afraid to be too early, but I also didn't want to be too late. I also, for sure, did not want to see him after the dream I had. For some reason, I had this funny feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I thought about him. The same feeling I had when he was about to kiss me in the dream.

I couldn't quiet my thoughts about him on the entire walk to the Kappa Lambda Gamma house. It was agonizing. I intentionally wore a pair of athletic shorts and an oversized sweatshirt for the little meetup. The signals in my mind were already fried, I didn't want to confuse them further by wearing something nice. My caveman girl brain would mistake this thing for a date, given the night prior's events. 

The house was a red brick colonial with black shutters and white, rounded-off windows. The fraternity's Greek letters, cut out of wood and painted a dark blue, sat just above the doorway, just in case any of the guys got lost, I assume. When you're piss drunk, having your frat's symbol emblazoned onto your house like a bat signal should give you a higher success rate of getting home. 

I had been in the house before. Or at least, I was pretty sure I had been there before. Like I've said before, I went to a lot of parties during my time at Tulane, thanks to Lily. Kyle's frat didn't host often. They were on probation after a few unsavory incidents in the house left people injured or harmed in some way. It had been a long time since I even walked near the KLG house.

Too afraid to simply walk up to the door and knock, I stood on the sidewalk, a few yards from the house, and pulled out my phone to text Kyle to come get me. Before I could even open the messages app, though, I heard a voice call my name. 

I looked up quickly and found Kyle standing on the porch, waiting for me. He must have had the foresight to realize I'd be unsure of how to even approach getting inside. He gestured for me to come closer with his hand. 

"Come on in, I didn't want you to get lost," he called to me as I rushed closer. "It's a big house."

"I can see that," I quipped, raising my eyebrows. I walked through the door Kyle was holding open for me and stood awkwardly in the foyer, waiting for him to show me where to go. Kyle turned and looked at me, pausing for a moment, almost as if he was waiting for me to lead the way.

"Oh- uh," he stuttered, "you can follow me." He paused awkwardly again before sliding past me. The house was strangely quiet. I followed him up the large set of stairs on the left side of the foyer, taking care to not trip or something and further my embarrassment. In all honesty, I couldn't even fully look at him. I should have still been seething from his stunt the day before but instead, I was weirdly nervous.

He turned left and led me down a hallway, stopping about halfway down in front of a door on the left side. 

"This is me," he uttered, opening the door. "I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't get stuck with a roommate." He stepped in and waited for me to follow suit before closing the door, turning the latch on the doorknob to lock it. He must have seen my face change to one of discomfort. "Just so my brothers can't barge in and be weird," he quickly added.

His room was surprisingly well decorated. His bed sat lofted in the right corner of the room with a grey-striped bedspread tucked neatly into the bed frame. His desk was nestled under the bed, lit with a small desk lamp and the light of his computer monitor. A chest of drawers sat in the left corner of the room right below a small window, which was adorned with dark blue curtains. Closer to where we were standing was a small couch on the right side of the room, and a TV stand with a small television atop it on the left. In the center of the floor laid a grey wool rug. The walls were littered with various posters and flags, including a Tulane flag and a Beatles poster. 

"Abbey Road," I remarked, pointing at the aforementioned wall hanging.

"One of the best albums of all time," he answered, walking to his desk. He pulled out the chair and sat on it sideways so he could face me. 

"Best song on it?" I challenged, not fully believing that he'd actually listened to the album.

"How can I pick just one?" he smirked. I was sure I found him out. Anyone who actually listens to an album for sure has a favorite. "The entire B-side of the record from 'You Never Give Me Your Money' on is brilliant."

I was stunned. "The medley, huh?" I muttered. "I like 'I Want You.'"

"That's a long one," he chuckled. 

"I prefer The White Album, though," I replied. I still stood stiffly in the front of the room. I didn't want to sit in his furniture, for fear of what he might have done on them. Kyle turned to grab his books out of his backpack, so I took the opportunity to step forward and plop down, criss-cross applesauce on the ground. The rug was soft, thankfully. I slung my bag off my shoulder and looked down to open it. 

"You can, you know, sit on the couch," Kyle remarked smartly. "You don't have to sit on the floor."

"I know, I just, work better this way." A lie. But a harmless one at that.

"Well, I feel bad that I'm in a chair and you're not," he declared, sliding out of his chair to join me on the rug. "We're just brainstorming so I don't need a desk."

We spent an hour talking through the project and its requirements, making a schedule to meet every Thursday night to get little pieces done. The final project acted as our final, rather than an exam, so we both agreed to take it seriously. I was silently thankful that someone so good at Calc would be contributing so much to my final grade in the class. 

"Now," Kyle started, setting his math notebook aside. "I feel like I need to get something out of the way." 

My stomach dropped. "Y-yeah?"

"Your poem," he replied lowly. My stomach fell even further. "I want to apologize for that. I shouldn't have been so rude."

"No, it's fine," I began. "It was kinda bad."

"I don't know why I said anything."

"I get it. But I'm an English major. I should write better," I continued. "I rewrote it a bit. I was struggling with it, honestly." I appreciated the apology. It was big of him to own up to what he did. It was likely because we'd have to see each other regularly and be civil to do well on the project. I didn't care the reason, it just made me happy to know he had a sliver of a conscience.

"Can I try to help? I actually like poetry," he asked. "I also listen to a lot of music and that's like poetry I think." I grabbed my bag and rummaged through, pulling out the small spiral notebook I use for ideas and brainstorming.

"What do you propose? It's due tomorrow," I responded. Kyle shifted to lay on his stomach, resting his chin on his hands. He looked off into middle distance, eyes cast toward the door. 

"I just think that writing about eyes is cliche like I said. What was the prompt again?"

"Love. Just love. Fucking vague, right?" I snarked. 

"God, yeah," he sighed. "I think... I think if you want to describe loving someone, like parts of them, you should pick unique things. At this point you shouldn't scrap the whole poem, just tweak it."

"Yeah, I agree, again, considering it's due tomorrow."

Kyle inhaled sharply and turned onto his side, still staring off, rather than looking at me directly. I sat, pen perched over the notebook paper, waiting to write his ideas down. Even if I didn't use them, I still valued other people's takes on things. 

"Talk about, oh, I don't know. Their clothes. How they express themselves. How they stand out from a crowd. Or the way they scrunch their face up when they stretch." I started scribbling his words down quickly. "Her crooked smile, or the way her eyes flash when she gets passionate about what she's saying. The way her hair is always getting in her eyes, or how she pushes her glasses up her nose when they start to slip down."

I don't know when it happened, but I slowly stopped writing, transfixed by his words. The detail with which he described some imaginary person left me flustered. You could tell he knew what true love was.

"Maybe," he continued, "write about how you love when she finishes your thoughts. Or how she taps her pencil on her face when she's thinking."

I do that. I thought.

"Should I keep going?" he asked, interrupting my thoughts. I looked up at him, finding him staring directly at me. I met his deep brown eyes, which were now sparkling and bright. He sat up to look at my notebook. "No good, huh?"

"Oh, god, no it was great," I stammered, still looking into his eyes. "Sorry, I just, my pen ran out of ink."

"Hah, that sucks. Was that helpful at all?"

"Immensely," I breathed.

Just finished my rewatch and it’s swinging even more in favour of being my favourite show and it definitely might be the *best* show

The opening sets the tone so well but also, pleasantly surprised how long it took someone to die once we get into the show for real!

I do wish we could have got more of bryce but her onstage debut with them is so fun and she’s SO good

Livio and Razlo are my BOYS man, they're my guys. OUGH.

Usually I am Not A Fan of characters being added to the main cast super late in the game, but I think him being introduced a little earlier as a villain superrrr helped me accept him as Part of The Gang. Ya know? He's one of my favourite characters and I just adore him. That being said, it's really hard to talk about him without spoilers. Like, really hard. Actually Trigun is hard to talk about without spoilers! So I'm gonna shove this long ramble nobody is gonna read, under a read more. I'm a kind soul, I'm protecting your dash.

Also total warning, this isn't like... legible, this is the worse way to learn about the character cos im just going "wow it was cool when he did this thing... and also this thing... hes so cool i love him" for too many words.

So I'll address his main sort of... thing, first off. So Livio has dissociative identity disorder, and like, for a lot of it, it's quite clear that Nightow didn't exactly go in with a heap of research on the subject. However, I wouldn't call it a negative portrayal at all. Ofc its not really up to me, but like, he wasn't really portrayed as dangerous because of his disorder. He and Wolfwood have the same backstory, they're dangerous because of The Eye of Michael and those dudes have always been explicitly condemned in-narrative as, y'know, the baddies. It's less "he's bad because he's bad" and more "he does these things because he's been conditioned by a cult from a young age to do these things". His disorder is like... not even a factor. The Eye just likes stealing kids and training them for bad stuff, man. And like, you do feel sorry for them. Both Livio and Razlo have been hugely manipulated by Chapel in particular, who positioned himself almost as a father figure, and certainly led them to believe he cares about them. So like, it's not really surprising he does everything he's asked to, he hasn't really had anywhere else he's felt cared for. Anyway I LOVE Livio's intro in the manga. We're told two guys are coming, Livio the Double Fang, and The Tri-p of Death.

Then these two dudes show up:

And like... you make the obvious assumption that those are the guys, ya know? Sure looks double-fangy to me. They're then shown tearing through a bunch of intimidating looking dudes to sort of, hype up how strong they are, right? But nuh cos see.

Livio just comes in and wrecks their shit, picks them both off as though they were nothing.

and to be fair, they are! He's a very high-level eye of Michael dude ya know?

So yeah, that's our introduction to Livio, fantastic way to show that he's just, like, strong as hell. We learn he's joining the Gung-ho Guns, so y'know, oof, he's now in direct opposition to our heroes, supposed to make you nervous and all. Anyway he and Chapel show up every now and then to just be... y'know... annoying. Try and kill him a lil y'know... that sort of thing.

It's these fucked up family reunions that we love ya know. This is totally me at Christmas.

Anyway this time was rlly funny because Elendira rlly said "you three are so annoying pls leave your drama at the door"

And they DID hahaha. I don't blame them, she's scawy.

Anyway what I think I like most about Livio is how like... y'know, sweet he is. He's kinda like Wolfwood in that he's a total sweetheart at his core but life just hasn't let him be sweet, ya know?

When Jasmine was in trouble, baby Wolfwood didn't even hesitate to run out and save her.

And Livio was the same, you know? And after The Couch, Livio even says, he wants to live his life like Wolfwood so like, we've got these two dudes with near identical journeys.

From orphans, to initiates, to assassins, to good guy with a gun lmfao. Despite what Livio does, it's really hard to ever hate him, and Razlo, too is extremely sympathetic...

Like he's got his own motivations and shit he's working through, man.

Anyway I really love during the Elendira fight when hes like, struggling to beat her, how Razlo gives Livio his own sort of hype man experience like the manga flashes back to how hard Livio worked to keep up with Razlo and the Eye, and Razlo is like hyping him up the whole time. It's really nice and wholesome :)

Anyway his journey from emo cult man to himbo cowboy was fantastic and I love Livio so much, he's a sweetheart.

And I loved his appearance at the end of the manga, like, showing he was looking after the orphanage and stuff.

And also this whole scene where he and Vash ate together made me cry.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 1 Anime Review

Does Include Spoilers....

Ok so I started watching Bungo Stray Dogs and like most I started because of Dazai. He was sexy and even with his wish for suicide he just got to me. Then I watched the first season and was so happy I did it pulled me in fast. Dazai quickly lost the main reason for the show for me it honestly became my favorite character in first season being Atsushi Nakajima. He had so much heart and compassion that the rest lost so long ago. He made me feel as he learned who he was and who he could help. I grew a strong liking to the character and even shipped him with Kyōka Izumi the way he saved her and even the fact he took her on a date they were just too adorable not to love. Ranpo Edogawa caught my interest mainly cause the voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya who played Baldr Hringhorni in Kamigami No Asobi. I was really surprised that Doppo Kunikida even grew on me and his comedian side to him of how he was with Dazai and always knocking the crap out of him but I could tell he was a good man. Anyways Kunikida's power is pretty cool "The Matchless Poet". I love how he can throw the cards out and whatever it is appears. I also think him and Dazai work so great together.

Now don't get me wrong Osamu Dazai is still a big part of the show and I found it funny how he was about the whole suicide with a beautiful woman. It left me wondering why he wanted to die so much but I know its shown as the seasons go on cause I started season 2 already and already starting to understand but I will leave that in season 2 review of it. So the relationship between Jun'ichirō Tanizaki & Naomi Tanizaki was so weird at first but fuck it I didn't even care they were siblings because not only do you easily forget but they don't look alike at all I feel like maybe there is like an adoption kinda story to them maybe. Anyways you know early on their is not only a relationship with them but its also sexual. However when she almost gets killed the way he responds to losing her and later as well he doesn't get even as a brother he gets even as a lover so I'm gonna treat them just as that fuck it, its not like sibling loves bother me much in anime/otome world. Plus not gonna lie Jun'ichiro his power "Light Snow" is pretty damn neat.

Yukichi Fukuzawa seems like a stickler in the beginning but you find he truly believes in his team and he grew on me. I felt like he cares about each and everyone of them and will fight for them at any cost. He is practically Daddy to them all and I think they would fall apart sometimes if he wasn't the lead of it all. Chūya Nakahara seems to be a cool character but of course I feel like he isn't really a main in the first season however I find him actually pretty attractive as well but I swear its how he dresses more than anything its so damn sharp looking. He gives me that true mafia/yakuza feel to how he looks and dresses. He seems to have anger issues but I love his banter between him and Dazai however I don't see this romance so many want and like. I will pass for now both men are hot and I would gladly be in between these men could make a very interesting smut story thats for sure... lol.

Michizō Tachihara seems like a crazy fuck but still pretty cool character so far based on the first season at least, look forward to seeing him more later he has my attention at least. Even though Ryūnosuke Akutagawa is an asshole in the first season he has one of the coolest powers by far his Rashōmon power like a dragon like creature that he can cut people down easily with. I feel bad for Ichiyō Higuchi because you find fast she is so damn in love with that man and he treats her like pure crap however doesn't stop her from taking on the enemies to bring him back when he is captured. The one sentimental moment where he grabs her hand after she saves him I really wanted after he told her he was sorry I wanted her to tell him she loved him I wonder if it would have changed. I feel like his issue is he doesn't even see her following to him is because she loves him. However its a very toxic relationship at least first season, I just hope it gets better because I think they would be good together plus bad guy or not he is fuckin hot too. Speaking of Ichiyō Higuchi honestly girl has some balls and she will do anything even die for that man I can respect her because she probably could have gotten out from what you get from her but she refuses to leave his side. Gin Akutagawa I still don't know much about him but still seems mysterious and attractive cause of that.

After breaking down the people that all made it interesting for me, yes I know there is more these just happen to be my list of favorites. Still amazes me a show with alot of hot bad guys kinda reminds me of Piofiore in that sense. Anyways I feel like it brings a decent amount of action however every part doesn't have to have it which I really like since I normally don't watch ones that are too heavy on it. I love Dazai's power and how he can hush any of the others with his power practically neutralizing even some of the worst bad guys. I still don't see anyone being gay and I will stand by that and I'm ok because seriously too many hot guys for me to even think about them together I would rather think about them being straight makes it easier to fantasize about them then. Overall I would gladly recommend this to anyone whether your into otome and shoujo the most I think you could still like this if nothing but the comedy side of things. I look forward to the next upcoming seasons as I catch up I will write my review on each season.
