Hello and Welcome to The Gayest Magical Girl Tournament!

A Tumblr Tournament dedicated to determining which magical girl, boy, or nonbinary person is the gayest of them all! Brought to you by @mahoushoujopeony!

What is a magical girl you may ask?

For the purposes of this tournament, a magical girl is defined as a character who uses magic (or something magic-like) in an otherwise primarily non-magical setting. This magic must be a significant part of this character’s identity, which they consistently use throughout the series upon gaining it. One-and-done magic does not a magical girl make.

The use of magical items and transformations are common tropes within magical girl media, but they are not required for a character to be considered a magical girl.

Not sure if a character counts? No worries! All border-line or otherwise non-traditional magical girls will go through a preliminary vote after the submission period to determine if they will be included. The more the merrier!

Tournament Schedule and Rules under the cut:

Tournament Format and Schedule

Submissions will tentatively be open until August 9th. This date may be pushed back as needed, but August 9th is the earliest submission closure date.

After submissions close, a few sets of preliminary brackets will be run. 

To prevent the tournament from being overtaken by 1 or 2 series, preliminary polls will be run to determine which two characters from a given series will be placed in the main tournament brackets. 

Additionally, there will be polls for each border-line or non-traditional magical girl to determine if they will be included in the tournament.

Following this, there will be sub-brackets for indie characters and characters from unadapted manga/comics, giving these lesser known characters a fair shot before they enter the main bracket.

After all preliminary events have concluded, the main event will be run in your standard 1v1 tournament format. Every poll will run for a week. If you have further propaganda for a character featured in an actively running poll, you may tag the blog and it will be shared during the event.

The Rules (plz read)

No characters from sexually explicit works - Works that include fan-service are fine, but p*rn/h*ntai will not be allowed. For example, Kill La Kill is just about the farthest a series can go while being included in the polls. Gushing Over Magical Girls will not be allowed.

Only one submission per character per person - Multiple submissions are encouraged, however, repeated submissions of the same character are not. Please do not spam the poll with the same character repeatedly. The number of times a character was submitted will be noted on the submissions google sheet, but this is just for fun and will have no benefit for the tournament itself. This rule is basically just here for my own ease of organization. 

No OCs - If your character is a part of an active/released indie project, they may be included in the tournament. Magical Debbie who you have drawn 100 times will not be allowed. Magical Debbie from your webcomic will be allowed.

Gay Magical Girls Only - This is EXCLUSIVELY a tournament for characters that experience some form of same sex traction. Trans, nonbinary, and aro/ace characters would be a whole tourney in and of itself. If the character happens to be transgender, nonbinary, ace, or aro AND experiences some form of same sex attraction, they will be included. Trans characters that are straight or aroace characters won't be included. And of course, bi/pan characters are welcome.

Miscellaneous Rulings - Characters of any gender are allowed. Typing magical girl/boy/person every time is just too cumbersome.  Magical Girls who exist in a series is outside of the magical girl genre are allowed. On the other side of the coin, characters who are inside of a magical girl series who are not a magical girl will not be included. (Sorry, Tomoyo.)

Be Kind and Have Fun - Please be civil and do not post hate towards characters included in the polls. This is my first time running a Tumblr tournament, so let’s all have fun!

Calypso and their friends had formed a video game club, and everything was going smoothly until they stumbled upon a peculiar shop called Snowflux. The shop owner recommended a game called 'Star Blades of Symphony and Genesis,' claiming it would change their lives. The game was a fantasy fighting game where players could create custom avatars, known as the chosen ones, to defeat the dark lord. Intrigued, they decided to play it at their next club meeting. Calypso took the lead and uploaded the app download into the microchip, transferred it into the Nexus, a popular gaming system, and pressed play. As they hooked up their controllers to the Nexus, something strange happened. They chose a different faction to be a part of Love, Ice, Fire, Wind, Lightning, and Water respectively.

Lucie Viatge, the character designer of Goodbye Volcano High, recently revealed more concept art for the game, including of the in-universe Magical Girl show "Pretty Heroes" (link in source):

There is also a Magical Girl show in the game, called Pretty Heroes. I designed all the characters! I'm a big magical girl enthusiast, with my favorites being MS Madoka Magica, Cardcaptor Sakura and several Precure seasons (ofc I also like Sailor Moon and many others).

Unless I missed something, I'm pretty sure Pretty Heroes is mostly just mentioned and maybe some poster or merch is shown here and there a couple of times in the entire game, so it was a big surprise learning that there was so much thought put into it. Edit: turns out there IS a scene with them I completely missed, beware spoilers.

Over the last week, I decided to go ahead with bookmarking all the fics I've recommended over the years on AO3 since I abide by tumblr poll results always (and man pour one out for all the fic that never made it to AO3 or has since been deleted, sooooo many gems lost to time!) and it was a bit more than the ~3,000 I was expecting:

Hopefully, this will be easier than browsing the hundreds of recs posts I've made, since you can filter for any of the author's tags now! These are mostly focused on Star Wars and DC fandom, but I did my time in the anime mines and occasional tours through some TV fandoms or movies. You can dig into everything unfiltered and start your own filtering, or the bigger fandoms you'll find:

MAJOR FANDOMS: Each of these should have 100+ at minimum and, in the case of Star Wars, literally almost half of them are in that fandom. Look, Star Wars fandom might be a trash fire in a lot of ways, but it is ON FIRE with some good fic. (Older bookmarks not guaranteed to match my current sentiments, especially re: the Jedi, but they did catch my fancy at that point in time!)

STAR WARS: - All Star Wars -OR- All Star Wars minus the Obi-Wan/Anakin ship - OR- Nothing BUT Obi-Wan/Anakin

BATMAN/DC: - DC can sometimes be tricky, but you can do a Batman* search and get most of them (though, sometimes Nightwing* or Young Justice* or Superman* will catch some of the others). Honestly, though, you might want to just do a search for what character or dynamic you like and have fun from there, because otherwise you're getting a face full of my Dick Grayson Is The Center Of The Universe And I'm Making That Everyone Else's Problem agenda. ;)

MARVEL/MCU: - Marvel* will probably get most of the various properties, though you may want to filter for Defenders* or Guardians of the Galaxy* if you're interested -OR- Marvel* without the Thor/Loki - These focus a lot on the Thor* fandom if you want to witness the results of like 8 years of constant voracious reading in that fandom (Minus the ship), because, seriously, I read a LOT of Odinson family fic. - Bonus, just do a search for Maximoff* to find some really good X-Men: First Class-verse because, listen, I have been ALL ABOUT the Maximoff twins since long before the movies or MCU brought them over and I will DIE ON THE HILL of "Marvel, make Magneto their bio-dad again or I'm never reading another comic of yours ever".

TOLKIEN/LORD OF THE RINGS/SILMARILLION/HOBBIT: - Tolkien* -OR- Hobbit* -OR- Lord of the Rings* searches will turn up most of my Elf-hunting, I primarily focus on the Sindar Elves, but look I can't resist my problematic Feanorian faves or that I will die on the hill that Fingolfin is the best ever. (You have NO IDEA how sad I am that so much fic on Stories of Arda or FFNET is not easily bookmarked on AO3, sob. I externally bookmarked a few of the bigger ones, but sooo many shorter faves are missing from my recs tag.)

CLAMP: - X/Tokyo Babylon legitimately bums me out because it's not a huge fandom and yet so much of what was written was pre-AO3 and lost when CLAMPesque went down or was never brought over from Livejournal, yet this fandom (well, the Seishirou/Subaru pairing) still burns brightly in my heart.

MINOR FANDOMS: Ones that probably only have under 100 bookmarks (often around the 20-30 bookmarks range), but will at least give you a place to start! Steven Universe: A Complicated Relationship

I’m starting to fall out of love with this show. I used to be obsessed with it and it was important to me as a way of figuring out my gender and sexuality. Yet, my relationship to it has become more complicated as of late. I’ve defended it myself and have been passionate about it, yet seeing the way a lot of stans have acted has kind of ruined it for me especially due to dismissing any criticism. This is not me saying I hate it or think it’s irredeemable Nazi propaganda but not everyone who dislikes it watches Lily Orchard and there are valid things to criticize about it.

There’s definitely bad faith criticism of the show such as flanderizing Steven into a crybaby with those Jack Horner/Hitler memes or claiming it was made to attack Christians but some people do have valid points. The episodes Bismuth and Gem Harvest may have not intended to come off as racist but one could interpret them as forcing people to forgive their abusers or bigoted relatives. As someone who’s Asian and knows about the way we’re represented, the way Priyanka and Doug were portrayed in the early seasons as tiger parents has not aged well.

One other criticism I’ve seen is that the show copies a lot of old sci fi or anime tropes without recognizing the issues with them or removing them from their original context. I and others have compared the show’s ending to the Highbreed arc from Ben 10 Alien Force. The difference is that the Highbreed were treated as supremacists who needed to be stopped, not as abusive family. People can debate over whether they should have gotten more consequences but they were not treated as dorky relatives. The only one Ben befriends was a low ranking officer who became the new leader and convinced the high council to accept having their DNA changed. There’s also the human zoo, another sci fi trope that’s aged badly with the racist implications.

The series is also compared to a lot of anime. There’s references to Ghibli, NGE, Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball and many have compared the show’s idealism to that of magical girl shows like Madoka Magica. The difference is that those shows didn’t use subjects like colonialism as a backdrop for family drama. SW suffers from that as well especially with the rebels only wanting to restore the old liberal system while taking imagery from the Viet Cong. People who wanted a revolution story weren’t necessarily wrong as that’s what the early seasons did set up.

Some will accuse me of fandomizing the war but I’ve noticed a lot of the hardcore stans are white queers who support Israel or demand complete support for democrats. Not saying every SU fan is a bad person btw. There are a lot of decent people who are anti Zionist and like the show but a lot of these pop progressive cartoons as well as SW, Disney and Marvel/DC are used by people with gross beliefs to infantilize themselves and dismiss any criticism from POC fans. If mainstream kids media is where you’re getting your all political takes from then maybe you do need to branch out and watch more mature stuff. Watching NGE helped me grow up a lot and learn nuance.

As a recap, I’m not saying SU is a bad show or that people are bad for liking it. It was important for my own development as well as a lot of lgbt youth and was a jumping point for a lot of my current interests such as classic anime or Lisa Hannigan, who’s an amazing musician and is pro Palestine btw. Future did help me a bit with mental health yet people are allowed to dislike it or find that even if it wasn’t intentional, there are some implications that should be addressed. I don’t hate it and there’s some stuff worth defending in it but it’s not the greatest show ever and people who get all their politics from it need to grow up. Between it, TOH, Dead End and She-Ra, I think a lot of the pop progressive media that we have today will not age well and that’s something we need to accept.
