#SOJ hate

My main problem with SOJ is that it fundamentally misunderstands what Ace Attorney is about. It's like they looked at the previous games and saw that Phoenix was an underdog so they created a ridiculous, impossible situation that would make him an underdog ie throwing him into a country where everyone hates defense attorneys.

Except that's not what Ace Attorney is about. It's also commentary on real life court proceedings. It has something to say about the justice system and police and how prosecutors and defense attorneys should be.

But SOJ isn't based on any real court system. No court runs itself the way Khura'inese courts do. It even kinda frames the Japalifornia court system as ideal compared to the Khura'inese justice system which ignores that we spent 6 games (aa trilogy, apollo justice, investigations 1+2) critiquing the Japalifornia court and justice system. Many people have brought up the colonialist narrative in this game and that just adds to it.

People have also already brought up how Ace Attorney games suffer from abandoning the connective narrative the previous AA games have by trying to make aa5 and 6 more welcoming to new players who didn't play the previous games.

If Ace Attorney wanted to create a game that didn't connect to the overarching story of Ace Attorney and introduce new players to these games, instead of ignoring what was set up in previous games while still using the same cast if characters, they could have had a game take place at Themis Academy. You can have a brand new cast of characters and/or let the player make their own. They could choose the prosecutor or defense attorney route and even play multiplayer.

AA6 also does too much by having the narrative go back and forth between 2 countries in order to have 3 main characters. AA5 and 6 simply did not want a main character, trying to make Athena, Apollo, and Phoenix ALL the main character instead of having a game focused and centered around just 1 of them. That's part of why calling it the Apollo Justice Trilogy is so insulting. Not only do aa5 and 6 not connect to aa4 but Apollo Justice had to share the main character role with 2 other people.

AA5 couldn't focus on Apollo and his friends at the space station and the loss of his best friend because it also shoved in the introduction of a new character. We had to quickly get to know her backstory, her connection to all the main characters, and all about her mother and best friend and connection with the prosecutor and then it also added in Phoenix getting back into the courtroom for the first time and facing Edgeworth again.

Then AA6 has the audacity to have a Gramarye focused case without acknowledging that Apollo is also a Gramarye. And we can't just focus on Apollo's over complicated connection to this new country, the country has to relate back to Kurain so it has something to do with Phoenix! Remember Kurain and the Feys! Let's remind you of a complicated family legacy we handled really well to emphasize how little attention we're giving to Trucy. And don't forget, we also have Athena and Simon so let's add in a case that focuses on them, too. It's too much. It wants to do so much and does little of it well.

The only way I can logic Phoenix putting himself in an insane life or death situation like he did in the Foreign Turnabout is if he absolutely knew he was going to win. Like got cocky with his ability, luck, win record, etc.

Obviously, there are other situations where I believe he would put his life in danger for the people he loves (see: bridge to the turnabout) but that is SO different.

Maybe I’m just overthinking this whole thing or maybe I’m suffering insane Phoenix Wright Brainrot or both but my GOD this is a frustrating case to play

ppl who follow me are tired of me saying this, but if i could address the aa fandom directly... i rly would just ask that people like, stop being mean about dd and soj. like thats all i want.

im not even IN the fandom anymore, so i have no reach. i draw fanart and make my little ship posts but thats all. and thats bc the wider fandom ... is so fucking mean sometimes. omg. like its just not fun!!

but really, specifically, its about the dd and soj thing. the "play ace attorney we have so many games and [MOST OF THEM] are good!" thing. like, its fine if you dont LIKE dd and soj, obviously!! im not saying you HAVE to!

but "i dont like these games" and "these games are objectively bad and no one likes them" are entirely different statements.

plenty of people like dd and soj, even have them as their favorite games. i know this bc my soj fanart gets notes 😭 i have ppl in my tags excited and happy when i draw dhurke and datz. bc we like these characters!! and like to think about them and the story they come from!

...just bc YOU dont like soj, doesnt mean a lot of ppl dont like soj! so i really dont understand the drive to constantly talk down and insult these games?! like ... why be negative. u could be nicer. its possible and easy and then doesnt drive ppl away from the fandom bc their favorite games are being trashtalked all the time.

a lot of ppl find the space family dd interesting! they LIKE the phantom and his concept as a character! they LIKE soj and all of the political settings! it doesnt rly matter that they are, by and large, A Little Flop, bc people still LIKE them and like making content for them and thinking abt them and playing in the space and...!! like. why hate that? why constantly put us down for enjoying smth you didnt?

just dont need to constantly make slights at how "bad" and supposedly unenjoyable dd and soj are. cus not only is it mean, and makes the fandom hostile, but its literally untrue. i dont even consider myself in the fandom anymore bc all the fun is taken out of it when i have to brace myself for shitty comments like this whenever i read a post abt the series!

and i rly wish i could just Not Care what other ppl say. a lot of my friends dont care. but soj is like.....ive spent the past 5 years loving that stupid ass mediocre game. like its deeply important to me. and i just feel like a lot of ppl would have some fun with it if they werent constantly told how bad and skippable it is. im sure dd fans feel the same way.

if im being so honest. i haaaaate how shoehorned in apollo is in dd. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ATHENAS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!! his character doesnt rlly develop much from it all and despite how i enjoyed the 'characters turn on eachother' twist it wasn't compelling to me and fell flat as soon as it began. keep phoenix and apollo on the sidelines man let athena do ANYTHING on her own. phoenix and apollo can have an assistant without her overshadowing so why can't they just do that for athena -__- . i would have loved to see more weird disbarred phoenix and apollo playing the mia role for athena. it would have been so awesome. GRAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I think one of the reasons i cant hate soj like other people do is because it does lowkey stay silly. Sexy clown. Casually hanging out with a guy who just escapaded prison. Dogshit pun names. alllll the maya tropes. Trucy performs magic on the stand. Amara's woodland creature magnetism. Emas just getting dragged around on flights all over the place. Larry kidnaps a bride. Time travel.

if i had a nickel for every time i enjoyed a 3rd case in an ace attorney game only to then learn everyone else hates it i’d have at least 4 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it is weird that it’s happened this many times.

i mean specifically bc of me muting so much on twt, i have by and large moved past the need to talk to other ace attorney fans, like im over it. i only rly exist as an artist who only draws the characters i like so its fine. but its a Little sad that i cant talk to other fans of this thing that i deeply care abt bc a great deal of them are like, oh i WILL be unpromptedly mean about this game i havent played bc the rest of the fandom says its bad.
