kay you know what this fandom is dead and also was never alive except for five people and like, three millenials
so might as well post something
introducing ; my Simil agenda
feat : no proof at all, just vibes
Starting with Siam:
There is no way that woman isn't queer. The whole sabre badassery, the sitting sideways, the LIKING WOMEN ?! That's a sapphic officer.
On to Kamil :
Side-character means barely any facts/canon personality, wich means I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT. I don't even think she has a canon appearance except having grey eyes (?).
She is a canon badass tho, really good at what she does. And what do we do when we encounter a badass woman ? Ship her with another badass woman.
I don't remember my exact calculations based on canon/extrapolation, but I find they'd be of similar age around the time Ewilan spends at the Academy.

can't get over the lyric "sweet as a grape / if you can sit in a barrel / maybe i'll wait"
the implication that the only way that the narrator and his love could share in their approach to life is if his love were to be crushed, pressed, aged... made into a wine. something that can be indulged in. more bitter. but fresh from the vine they're too sweet.

There's a post going around about a specific alleged AI fanfic. The author of the post lists a lot of reasons why they believe the fic is AI. Not linking to the post and not commenting on its conclusion, but.
But.
People.
These???? Are all ABSOLUTELY VALID analogies/expressions???
"her nimble fingers worked with quiet precision"
"his grip firm but tender"
"her gown pooling around her like embers"
But the post says that:
fingers don't make sound, so what does quiet precision mean? as opposed to what? her joints cracking with every movement? how is a grip firm but tender? what does that mean? since when do embers pool? the entire fic is littered with these adjectives that contradict each other or just straight up do not make sense, because all an ai does is generate descriptive language with no understanding of what the words it's spitting out actually mean
Come on, man. These are perfectly serviceable! Quiet precision and firm but tender are bog standard fictional expressions. Granted, I've never seen the simile of a dress pooling like embers, but I like it! It evokes!
They are absolutely something that an actual living breathing person would write! (In fact they're so serviceable that if the fic is AI they're probably plagiarised) (although firm but tender is SO common I'm not sure it can be plagiarised? It's like 'toeing off his shoes').
Like, yeah, AI sucks. I agree it sucks.
But analogies or expressions that aren't a one to one match for truth (reality? observable fact? whatever, you get what I mean) are not bad?? They don't mean a fic was written with AI?? They're what makes writing GOOD. Makes it interesting.
Sure, 'her nimble fingers moved like bones and tendons covered by skin because they were bones and tendons covered in skin, but her movements were so expertly precise that no one noticed just how super precise they were' might be entertaining. briefly.
But the whole POINT of metaphor and simile is to evoke a reaction. An emotion.
There's a post by silentwalrus that I cannot find (thanks tumblr search), and it's pissing me off, because they perfectly talked about this! About metaphor and how to write original and effective ones (something they're VERY good at). The example was something like 'he did a thing like a scorpion hidden under a bush' and pointing out that if you looked at it too close it didn't make sense, but it evoked a reaction.*
A clever or strange or evocative analogy or expression does not mean it was written by AI.
____________________________
*I may be misremembering the details, and if so I apologise; it was a long time ago, but I'm positive it involved a scorpion.

Dc x Dp Fantasy au
fantasy AU where Tim is, predictably, a prince of the kingdom of Gotham. except he continues to want nothing to do with the family bullshit and much like how in canon he made up a fake uncle, he attempts to worm out of being trapped (read- loved and cared for) by investigating a neighboring kingdom via infiltration. Bruce does not enjoy this. Bruce does not have a choice, because trying to stop Tim is like trying to keep a cat away from that one thing you really don't want said cat to touch; impossible.
bordering kingdom meanwhile is a place of magic and mystery and ghosts. this is why so little is known about it. its freaky. this is all due to the fact that its set, functionally, in the place where the border between the infinite realms and the physical world is thinnest. due to all the magic shit the people there have learned to live in very specific ways for their own safety and most newcomers either leave before learning much or, yk, die. this means what little information that gets out is vague and unreliable, and all the other kingdoms are really wary of the place. any attempts to reach out and establish connections have been met with silence, as if its cut off from the world. spies don't return. forcing their way in would risk strife and war. as it is, they mostly ignore the place, since it doesn't cause them much trouble- except that recently, odd glowing green creatures have been escaping into the other lands. somethings gotta be done.
Tim decides he's that something.
Meanwhile, Danny, teen boy that's freshly coronated as king, attempting to deal with stabilizing both Amity kingdom and the infinite lands, the magic keeping all the malicious shit where the people that can handle it weakening, among about a million other things when a pretty boy his age that knows how to handle political shit and somehow adjusts to the crazy magic society shows up: "please save me please please please-"

Hi Neil!
First of all, thank you so, so much for both the book and the tv show of Good Omens, they both quickly became my comfort fandom and I always turn to Aziraphale and Crowley when I'm sad. I really love them and am eagerly waiting for the third season.
I wanted to ask you a book related question, probably people have already ask you before but I never found an explanation: when you and Terry wrote that people thought about Aziraphale as “gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide”, did you meant it as actually "gay" or as "always happy"? Because the paragraph immediately after says that this wasn't true because angels are sexless unless they make an effort, so I always thought he was seen as a gay man (also explains Shadwell using slurs against him), but it's true that "monkey on nitrous oxide" seems to refer as someone who's just always happy...
What's the right interpretation?
Thank you very much again!
No we meant gay as in homosexual. The "as a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide" is using the simile in a humorous way, acknowledging the double meaning of the word gay.
If you listen to the Radio 4 show Bleak Expectations, written by Mark Evans, you will find this humorous trope used frequently.

I'm about 75 pages into Mort, which is the earliest Discworld book I've read, and I think I see what people mean when they say the earlier books are a bit rough around the edges. It's not bad, and I don't think I would even think to comment on it if I didn't already know people said that, but it doesn't quite feel like Discworld yet. If for no other reason than that in 75 pages, there's been 1 (one) footnote

DP x DC: obsession ramble
It’s not that I dislike obsessions, but I’d like to actually see them actually used more
The word obsession means: “an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind”
It has connotations of compulsivity and a loss of control
So if I’m told X character is obsessed with y, then I’m not actually shown the character being obsessed, it just feels… unsatisfying?
And a lot of the time we get told about it and then it’s never addressed again, or it gets treated more akin to a special interest
It’s Chekhov’s gun remaining unfired
Which is a shame because the works that do actually show the obsessive element of an obsession it feels like setup and payoff. It’s really cool and an interesting way to examine a character
And I get that takes extra work and isn’t always the story you want to tell, but it’s significantly less cool when it’s arbitrarily lumped in. It’s not a be all end all if it’s included and nothing is done with it, but it’s a bit like a nail not quite hammered into place: sticks out a bit and occasionally tears a small hole in your sweater(story)
Def not saying not to use it, but just food for thought on ways to use it I guess, or a way. Idk man I’ve definitely been overthinking this but people overthink every aspect of writing and tropes so that don’t make me special just sleep deprived
