Shonen Knife was one of Kurt Cobain's favorite bands.
Tumblr media
The Japanese pop-punk group formed in 1981, and when Kurt Cobain caught them performing live in LA in '91, he was immediately won over:
Tumblr media
"I was crying and jumping up and down and tearing my hair out—it was amazing," Cobain told Melody Maker in 1991. "I’ve never been so thrilled in my whole life. They play pop music—pop, pop, pop music."
That same year, he invited them to open for Nirvana during a UK tour. They played with Nirvana again in 1993 during multiple shows in the US.
Tumblr media
“I didn’t know who Nirvana were before that, but they looked wild, and I was so scared, so I didn’t want to tour with them at first,” Shonen Knife frontwoman Naoko Yamano told The Guardian. “But by the end of the tour we became friends."

The Iteration: Archie era comics
Who made the reference: Oyuki Mashimi
The Band: Shonen Knife
The Song: N/A
From the winter 1994 Archie comics Special Oyuki wears a shirt reading, 'Shonen Knife'.
Shonen Knife is a Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka in 1981.[3] Influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, the Beach Boys, and early punk rock bands such as the Ramones, the band crafts stripped-down songs with simple yet unconventional lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.[4][5] via wikipedia
No real reason for choosing to link this particular album other than it has most of the songs I remember from my childhood, also Shonen Knife's dope, give them a listen. bonus fact, kurt cobain covered twist barbie (and a bunch of other bands because every band has a shonen knife that loves them)

Who the fuck makes a list of the best "female" punk bands (where "female punk bands" means fronted by women and also bands of all women, but not all bands on the list are bands of all women) and FORGETS TO INCLUDE X-RAY SPEX?!?!? THERE WERE EVEN TWO WOMEN IN THAT BAND! I- oh, the whiteness and racism of it all. Oh, it's embarrassing.
Not to mention that no fucking playlist of punk rock should ever be complete without "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" at the very least! How can you even talk about punk music in general without mentioning X-Ray Spex?

Shonen Knife still pop-punk-rocking after 40 years It's hard to believe that Shonen Knife has been pop-punk-rocking together for over 40 years, but here we are. According to The Guardian: Shonen Knife formed in 1981 when Naoko and her schoolfriend Michie Nakatani cemented their love for the Beatles, the Jam and Ramones into something of their own. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/01/31/shonen-knife-still-pop-punk-rocking-after-40-years.html

Let me talk about non kpop music for just one second. Trigger warning for mentions of death, mental health and eating disorders.
They were a bit before my time but one of my favourite melancholia songs is Superstar by The Carpenters. I first learned of it when Sonic Youth did a cover and made it even more haunting and creepy. In a way, it is very kpop-coded because it's basically about hooking up in rock star then having delusions of him being in love with you (plot twist: he is not).
Anyways, I really wanted to talk about their vocalist, Karen Carpenter. I didn't know that in the 1970s, at the height of their fame, she was widely considered one of the best drummers in the world, when she was already one of the best singers in the world with her three-octave range.
Because she was quite short, nobody could see her behind the drum kit when she sang, so they moved her up front. Despite being a hugely talented drummer, the band eventually toured with another drummer so Karen could be the frontwoman full time.
She went on to marry a dude nine years older, who took her money and left her because she wanted children and he already had a vasectomy that he refused to reverse.
She suffered from Anorexia Nervosa for much of her life, an illness no doubt exacerbated by being a frontwoman of a band in the public eye. It was made doubly-worse because back then, Anorexia wasn't really a very widely known or well treated illness (it still isn't, even in 2024). Despite a brief remission after inpatient treatment, the illness got worse after her marriage broke down. She eventually collapsed in her parents home from a cardiac arrest. She was just thirty-two years old.
She was absolutely brilliant and we don't talk about her enough in my opinion. There are SO many Carpenters songs in mass media, a lot of people just don't even realise.
If reading this left you depressed, here is Shonen Knife's cover of 'Top Of The World'.

We All Dye - A Teen Titans (Girls) AU
Band: We All Dye
Founded: October 30, 1999
Location: Jump City, California
Fun Facts
The band is called We All Dye because at the time, everyone had dyed hair.
While they officially formed the band in 1999, they had been practicing together for about a year before the official founding. Their first concert was on Halloween.
Rachel Roth (Raven)
Born: May 1, 1986
Favorite Acts: The Cure, Korn, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Radiohead, Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins
Instruments: Lead Vocals
About: On stage, Rachel Roth is a gothic force of nature. She loses herself in the music, putting all her emotions on display and excelling in flair and passion. When she's offstage, Roth is the complete opposite. In real life, she's a reserved and mild-mannered kid who uses sarcasm and bluntness on a regular basis. Rachel's look on life had been jaded even before her mother's death from cancer, an which caused her to create the band as a way of finally releasing her emotions and hurt in a creative manner. She found that in making the band, she had found lifelong friends who would be there for her every step of the way. She tries her best to do the same for them.
Kori Anderson (Starfire)
Born: May 21, 1986
Favorite Acts: Bjork, Britney Spears, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, Rush, Sum 41
Instruments: Lead Guitar
About: An immigrant from Canada, Kori is without a doubt one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Though she's unapolagetically peppy, she's got a love for rock. She is trusting to a fault, which her older sister Kristen (Blackfire) would take advantage of. It was only after her bandmates showed Kori that she was being mistreated, did she finally begin to stand up for herself. Now she feels that she's finally gained true sisters.
Karen Beecher (Bumblebee)
Born: March 19, 1986
Favorite Acts: Jamiroquai, Green Day, Gloria Gaynor, Prince, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill
Instruments: Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals
About: The mom of the group, Karen works alongside Kori to be the peacekeeper. She makes sure everybody's packed and ready to go for concerts. Karen's certainly busy as a bee, which just so happens to be her favorite animal. She's also a proud nerd, hoping to work in tech if the band somehow fails to work out.
Tara Markov (Terra)
Born: February 21, 1986
Favorite Acts: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Soundgarden, Fiona Apple, Avril Lavigne
Instruments: Bass
About: Tara is a girl who is not afraid to get her hands dirty or speak her mind. This came from being bullied in childhood as a poverty-ridden kid needing to fight for everything she had. She chose to play bass as she felt it fit her "no-theatrics" attitude. Tara also is the most likely to argue either for herself or for other members of the band if she feels anyone is being disrespected.
Alina Hao (Jinx)
Born: August 8, 1986
Favorite Acts: Hex Girls (She won't apologize), Queen, Shonen Knife, Misfits, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie
Instruments: Keyboards, Backing Vocals
About: Alina is as wry, passionate and mischievous as they come. When Rachel was creating her on-stage persona, she mostly drew inspiration from Alina's theatricality. Funnily enough, Alina and Rachel had been rivals in elementary school, due to frequent bouts for spots in school plays. It was only after puberty and tragedy in Rachel's life did the two realize how silly their rivalry truly was, and Alina was invited into the friend group. Now she feels it's her job to back up her friends, and occasionally drive them nuts with pranks.
Rose Wilson (Ravager)
Born: February 21, 1986
Favorite Acts: Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, Alanis Morissette, Guns 'n Roses, Rage Against the Machine, Le Tigre
Instruments: Drums
About: If you want to keep Rose happy, don't tell her what to do without a good reason. She has problems with authority due to issues with her parents and being seen as a disappointment by most of her teachers. Having two younger brothers (with an older brother, Grant, who's serving in the Army) to protect from their mom and dad means she looks out for other kids going through a hard time. It's also caused her to become jaded, using snarkiness as a way to cope with the feelings of hurt and anger that have built up inside her. While she sees all her bandmates as sisters, she particularly bonds with Tara as a fellow victim of parental abuse, even if they bicker a lot.
So that's the band so far. Credit to Artzy for the name choice! Lemme know headcanons, and thoughts in the replies and reblogs. @artzychic27 @nerd-chocolate @msweebyness

Best of 2023 - Genre I've finally gotten into
This year, it's Crust Punk!
If I was feeling flippant, I'd say it was best described as punk, only political... There's a rawness, and an earnestness to it, as well as strong DIY inclinations in the culture that is really appealing. Bands like Amebix, Dystopia or Doom, really stood out to me; there's a lot of anger in the music, sure, but there's also a real sense of community and care that I want to see in more genres and fandoms!
I think one of the things I found most interesting delving into these bands was how close some of my musical taste already was; bands like Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror and Bolt Thrower (best band ever...🤘) are all very much crust-adjacent if not originating in that scene themselves (Napalm Death have always preferred describing themselves as a punk band rather than death metal or grindcore), and there was that one summer years ago when I listened to nothing but Gallhammer and completely screwed my muscal recommendations for years...
Many thanks to @spechblend for giving me some pointers about where to start, and also for finally convinving me to sit down and listen to Fugazi! (they're great, go listen!)
In 2024, I'm considering trying and get a better understanding of idol bands (specifically, from Korea and Japan). From an outsider's perspective, they seem...odd...
I've listened to a couple of bands in passing (specifically, TWICE and BLACKPINK, that I recall), and of course I'm familiar with Western manufactured boy- and girl-bands, but on the one hand, I feel like there's something fundamentally I don't get, and that annoys me, but on the other hand, there are some interesting bands that fall within the genre, like KBG84, Necromonidol, BiS (the Japanese band, not the Scottish one, who are definitely great), or Kasotsuka Shojo (which is a... cryptocurrency themed idol band...?! That sounds absolutely dreadful on so many levels, so I need to have a listen for myself...) that I want to check out.
I'm a big fan of a lot of Japanese metal and punk (Shonen Knife, Otoboke Beaver, Melt Banana) so it would be interesting to be able to put their music into some of the cultural context.
Will I get around to a deep dive into idol culture? Or will I just end up listening to more relaxing sludge/doom/death metal instead? Only time will tell... 🤔

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Daydream Believer” as filmed in May 2010 by PBS at Benedum Theatre in Pittsburgh PA w/Davy Jones, Jessica Pacheco, me, and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra—this clip has been re-broadcasted many times since 2011 and, to my amazement, keeps on getting buzz. For me this was an auspicious occasion on several counts—including that, for the first time, I played guitar on songs that I usually played bass or keyboards on. The complete set can be heard as a VIP-only album on https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/davy-jones-goes-to-the-symphony
The full set was broadcast only one time and consisted of: 1) Daydream Believer, 2) Little Bit Me, Little Bit You, 3) Valleri, 4) Girl + 5) I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone in a cameo appearance with Paul Revere & the Raiders. Before everyone went onstage, Paul asked me to nudge Davy into joining them as both The Monkees and The Raiders have a connection to that song. Davy balked at first, but he finally caved in. Elsewhere on this shoot (we were there 2 days) was Jay Black (Jay & The Americans), Roger McGuinn, The Miracles (the classic line-up minus Smokey Robinson), and Gary Lewis & The Playboys w/my friend, drummer Mike Arturi. Also, I was blessed to spend time with Jackie DeShannon (who MC'd) and Chad & Jeremy. The project was produced for PBS by Jim Pierson.
Between 1965-67, “Daydream Believer” had been rejected by 3 bands before reaching The Monkees. The eternally cheerful tune was written by John Stewart, who’d just left The Kingston Trio. Stewart passed the song to his friend, Monkees producer Chip Douglas, who tacked it on as “album filler” during the 1967 sessions for the PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN & JONES album. All four Monkees worked on the track with The Wrecking Crew, with Michael Nesmith doing guitar harmonic stingers, and Peter Tork playing the piano opening that made the song pop. Davy was reticent to sing it as it was cut for a tenor and he was a baritone, but he soldiered through. Then the track was shelved.
Unexpectedly, in October 1967 Colgems Records released “Daydream Believer” as a single and it became a surprise hit for Christmas (like 1000s of kids with “a Christmas story” connected to it, I was given the pic sleeve 45 by my Aunt Lil). The song has since been covered scores of times in eclectic styles, including a punk version by Japanese band Shonen Knife. I calculated that, in his life, Davy must’ve sung it live upwards to 10,000 times. In shows he stuck to the common arrangement, though I heard him do it country style, and we performed it several times with symphony orchestras at pops concerts. In 2000 he and I released a techno-dance version of it, which got some club play in Russia and Scandanavia. Of the many stories Davy could tell about this song, one he liked was when he and Mick Fleetwood played it in the dead of winter at a Norwegian venue near the Arctic Circle. “He was bangin’ away with his mouth hangin’ open, doin’ the Mick Fleetwood beat. Heavy man.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOT0INql6Ws

Do you listen to the bands that made music for the Powerpuff GIrls, besides the things they made for the show? (Bis, Shonen Knife, Devo...)
I listen to komeda, bis, shonen knife, devo [it's fucking wild they got devo to do mojo's song now that I'm grown and know who they are], optiganally yours and dressy bessy even though their song for Heroes&Villains doesnt sound anything like their other stuff lol. I blame PPG for making me like indie pop. Forever salty they couldn't get cibo matto on H&V but it is what it is, you know they would have made THE most fire Sedusa or Princess track humanly possible.
Also this is an insert song for one of the most important things that happens in @cnwol later
youtube
I even like the Power Pop bands, wish The Troys made more than 3 songs 🥲
