New Interview with Kazuki and Rei’s Japanese VAs: “The ending was unexpected.”
The Week 10 Interview went up on the Buddy Daddies website today. It was an interview with Kazuki and Rei’s Japanese VAs. I’ll link to the full interview below, but here are some some parts from it that I personally found the most interesting.
Rei’s VA notes that “buddy relationship” is basis for the series, but since Miri’s been there from the start, there is more of a trio focus. So the story is essentially about these two buddies who are wrapped around Miri’s finger.
Kazuki’s VA talks about how the series’ composition of having Rei and Kazuki, these two hitmen with past trauma and without normal childhood experiences, being wrapped around the finger of Miri, who is this innocent child, allows for both a lot of “fish out of water” moments, as well as drama. He thinks that there is a really great balance between the three of their characters.
Another thing he mentions is how his character can be very aggressive sometimes, so he seems to push around Rei (he uses the same term here that they both used for Miri, and which is used in the BD’s Opening song, which is 振り回れる (furimawasareru) and was translated to “wrapped around my finger”). Because of this, he will always apologize to Uchiyama (Rei’s VA), lol.
Rei’s VA is like that’s no big deal and thinks that Rei being pushed around, dragged around, etc. by Kazuki’s character was quite interesting and funny.
The interviewer asked them about the final act that is coming up, and they mention how Kazuki and Rei’s backstories came to light in Episodes 7 and 8, and that their feelings for Miri have united, become one, but that there are things that mustn’t be forgotten, and that those will come to light in Episode 10.
Basically, this is when we are going to see Ryo really getting involved and the question of what will really happen to Miri be questioned. What will the two of them actually do about Miri and whether the relationship between the three of them should really remain as it is.
Kazuki’s VA also mentions that one of the keys to the story will be the relationship with the person who Miri is still related to by blood (aka Misaki, her mother).
While Rei’s VA notes that there are some intense developments and that he is very curious about what viewer’s reactions to the story will be. Noting that Buddy Daddies has a very unique style in depicting a story with some tough elements to it. So the tone of the series had been different to what it is, even if the plotline had been similar, the angle or approach to it would be different.
As for the ending...Kazuki’s VA mentions that he might think about what Director Asai wanted to convey with his work, and Rei’s VA found the ending to be quite unexpected.
Kazuki’s VA is also interested in seeing how viewers will react. He thinks that there will be some who are realists and even though this is an anime, they will say, “This is the way it would be in real life.” For those people, “Fact is stranger than fiction” and the end of the series will make you question things like that and “Isn’t this what real life is like?”
Rei’s VA notes that, once you take out the "pseudo-family” aspect, the series as a whole can have quite a dark atmosphere about it.
No matter what though, they are quite certain that viewers will be surprised by the ending and they hope we enjoy the remaining episodes!

Buddy Daddies Joint Interview with Uchiyama Kouki and Toyonaga Toshiyuki [Extracts]
Link to interview
THIS IS NOT THE FULL INTERVIEW TRANSLATION!! I have only done some snippets that I found interesting, or shed some light on what's to come:
Looking back on Buddy Daddies now, what did you think of its first developments?
Toyonaga: From the hardboiled action sequence of the first episode, the second episode develops into more of a sitcom. This tone change really intrigued me, and I think everyone watching it went "What's gonna happen now?"
Uchiyama: It started with a scene where they're executing a mission as assassins, and this backdrop as well as the whole assassin conceit is a hook unique to this show. I thought there would be various types of drama unfolding from that, which would take up a part of the show; but as Toyonaga said, the sitcom elements became way more pronounced as the story unfolded, which left quite an impression on me.
How do you feel about Kazuki and Rei's buddy relationship?
Uchiyama: The story is predicated on the "buddy" thing, but since Miri joined the two so early, the real impression is more of a "trio", right. The two of them getting wrapped up in Miri's pace, really.
Toyonaga: Kazuki and Rei both have heavy baggage and trauma from their pasts, and didn't have a normal puberty or experiences regular children get to have while growing up. The story of the two of them pulled hither and thither by Miri is certainly new and strange for them but makes for easy drama, too. Often I found myself thinking "yeah, this is how it would go." In that way, the three of them have a delicate balance going on. And, speaking as the actor here, I'm playing [Kazuki] in quite an aggressive way, so I fear that Uchiyama is having a hard time of it.... Rei needs to be played as an opposite to Kazuki, so I'm always like "Sorry, Ucchi...." [laughs]
Uchiyama: No, no, it's not like that! [laughs] I actually had fun with Rei getting thrown around like that. There's a lot of variation in the story and each episode varies significantly in tone so even as a cast member I've quite enjoyed it behind the scenes too. From the POV of the viewer, it really seems they're being kept on the edge of their seat.
Buddy Daddies is entering its home stretch. What will be the highlights?
Toyonaga: In Episode 7, we saw the appearance of Karin, the sister of Kazuki's late wife, and in Episode 8, we met Rei's father...
Uchiyama: We saw a bit of each of their pasts.
Toyonaga: After that, in Episode 9, Rei and Kazuki's thoughts on Miri have finally lined up. However, from Episode 10 onwards, it becomes more clear that there are things they shouldn't overlook in favor of all this "affection". What will they actually do with Miri? A hitman named Ryo Ogino, who's been frequenting Kyu-chan (Kyutaro Kugi)'s shop, gets involved. In the real world of assassins, what will happen to Miri, a girl living a cheerful and wholesome life despite her pitiful circumstances? We're finally going to reach that point in the story.
So how would the story threads tie together in the end.... did you think.
Toyonaga: When I think of what will happen to Miri, there's still the matter of people who are related to her by blood. That relationship, I feel, is key.
Uchiyama: In that sense, the final few episodes do seem to take on a more serious bent. I do wonder what viewers will think of it, and I think even those hardcore plot elements are drawn out in the typical Buddy Daddies style. If this were an anime of a different tone, maybe those elements would have been narrated from another facet.
And as for the conclusion, did the two of you find it surprising at all?
Uchiyama: I really was wondering how they would end it, and I could not predict it at all until I read the final episode's script.
Toyonaga: But with an ending like this, you'd naturally end up thinking about what Director Asai wanted to say with this piece.
Uchiyama: Personally I was quite surprised.
Toyonaga: I really am curious how viewers will react to the ending. For example, even though it is an animation, some more realistic-minded viewers might be tempted to comment "In real life, it would go more like this..." To those people, I want to say... not "reality is stranger than fiction", necessarily, but "isn't this actually real life?" I think the ending really poses the question of whether you can accept it or not.
Uchiyama: In terms of the entire story, if I were only to think about the "pseudo-family" aspect of Kazuki, Rei, and Miri's relationship, it could actually get kind of dark. It was new for me as well, to see it portrayed this way through the medium of animation, and to be able to capture it from this angle.
Toyonaga: In any case, we think it would come as a surprise to viewers. Also, I hope you enjoy each episode to the end.

The part I loved the most of 7SEEDS season 2 was the comparison between Summer A and Summer B’s way of survival. Summer A was raised and bred to survive a post-apocalyptic world. They work hard and have the technical know how to survive. Their struggle emphasizes how cruel this future world is. And then there’s Summer B with their ABSOLUTE ASS PULLS. It’s funny to watch Ryo try to kill some of the team off and they get saved by CHANCE. Seminaru gets blocked in the sauna by Ryo, but is saved because Natsu STARTS HER FUCKING PERIOD THAT DAY AND DOESNT GET TO GO IN THE SAUNA. Ryo sails the boat away from Arashi as he’s in the water still, but gets saved because GLOWING JELLYFISH KEEP HIM WARM. Ryo tried to kill the artist dude by lying about how to pull down the sails so he gets hit overboard, but he lives because he lands in the ONE PLACE THE CONCRETE ALGAE ISNT AT AND ARASHI JUST PULLS UP IN HIS SEAWEED BOAT. Team summer B’s whole dynamic screams disaster gays and I love it.

7 Seeds Week, Day 2!
Theme of the day: Hard Day of Work
Starring: Various characters
Note: I actually had a very different idea for this theme, but then I checked one thing from youtube and realized that the joke wouldn’t work in English... or at least, I didn’t come up with a way how to make it work. But if I do at some point, then I’ll write a one shot about that idea as well.
Day 2: Hard Day of Work
“In all honesty, back in the day I would’ve never imagined my days would be filled with physical labor” Akio confessed as he was fixing a roof with Nijiko and Ran “Thought that I’d be in my office, only having to do anything physically taxing in my hobbies when I wanted to.”
“Didn’t we all” Ran says with a sigh “Now stop your whining.”
“Sure sure”
“Why would you want that?” Nijiko asks, not taking her eyes off of her work “Sitting all day is bad for your health.”
Akio and Ran looked at each other before chuckling, voicing their thoughts as one: “Summer A.”
Nijiko looks up at them, signs of irritation on her face for not getting an answer and the two marking her question as typical Summer A behavior, but she says nothing. Returning to her work, Nijiko knows there’s no point in trying to get answers from the two that they don’t want to give.
-----------
“Man, these are heavy” Ryuusei complained as he carried the day’s catch from the beach together with Arashi “I feel like some wrinkled old fisherman from a fishing village.”
“I suppose that’s something the both of us will eventually be” Arashi said with a chuckle “That said, I prefer this over being a farmer inland. Swimming is my thing, so fishing comes naturally.”
“Good for you” Ryuusei said with a sigh “As much as I’d like to say I’d prefer a less physical job, I’m stronger than I’m smart. I’m more useful this way.”
“We each have our place” Arashi said “And honestly, there really isn’t any brainy work out here aside from the position of a doctor. That’d definitely be too much for me.”
“Yeah, me too.”
------------
“Work work work, every day work!” Semimaru complained as he chopped up vegetables.
“Didn’t you nominate yourself for a cook’s position?” Botan asked, cutting the meat near the young man. Semimaru huffed, saying: “It’s not like I don’t like to cook, but I don’t like it that it’s pretty much the only thing I can do!” he groaned “When can we have some fun!?”
“We’ll have time for that once everything’s a bit more settled” Botan said. Thinking for a while, she added: “But since everyone’s worked so hard, I suppose we could suggest a day long break for everyone and some fun activities.
“Hell yeah!”
-------------
Aramaki smiled as he climbed up a hill together with Gengorou and Tsunomata. Working together with others like this, being useful, made him feel alive. He’d be even gladder if he had a special talent limited only to him, a task only he could handle, but being able to do what was asked of him was good enough. He wouldn’t have to let anyone down.
“Woah!” that was all the warning Aramaki needed, swiftly catching Gengorou as the younger man slipped on the slope right in front of him “Thank you, Aramaki-san.”
“Not a problem” it really wasn’t. Aramaki was just glad whenever he could help, no matter how big or small the task.
------------
“Dinner time, guys!” Matsuri called out from the ship’s kitchen, the cooking duty having fallen on her. She wasn’t too sure about her abilities at first, with cooking always having been Semimaru’s job and all, but she’d gotten the hang of it “Good work today!”
“It’s not like we get anything done out at sea aside from maintaining the ship” Ango said, but added as an afterthought: “But thanks.”
“Hopefully you’re doing your share properly as well” Ryo said, casting a suspicious glance at Matsuri “You haven’t been fooling around, have you?”
“Rude!” Matsuri snapped, puffing her cheeks “I’m doing my work properly!”
“Is that so?” Ryo asked, not entirely convinced. Ango simply ignored them, helping himself to the first serving. If this was their way of relaxing after work, so be it.
If only Matsuri wasn’t so loud.
