Finished Ryder Family Secrets and I hate hate hate Alec Ryder and I hate how the game frames it as a good thing when it's just. So evil. So wrong. On so many levels. The only way for me to stomach this is making it into the tragedy it ought to be so in my mind Scott never figured out that Ellen is frozen. He dies. Sara becomes the Pathfinder and she's like in her forties, married, has kids. Since Scott spent his life trying to settle Heleus and putting out fires, she has the time to parse through the memories encrypted in SAM and finds out about Ellen. Medicine did move forward so they find a cure and Ellen is woken up.

She was ready to die, fine with it, satisfied with the life she led. She wakes up in another galaxy hundreds of years later. Her daughter is almost the same age as she is. Her husband is dead. Her son is dead. The world changed and moved forward around her and she cannot find a place for herself in it. She grieves for Scott. She's furious at Alec for putting her in cryo and a little resentful of her daughter for pulling her out of it.

My theory is as follows and is, based off what I recall from the Codex on biotics and their powers, which is tangentially related to elemenet eezo exposure.

So, biotics (the powers) are based off channeling the electrical currents in the human nervous system through the eezo nodules along it in certain (and further amplified to actual usable in-game levels with the use of implants and amps). Most biotics (the users) learn to do this through the use of rote memorization of certain movements and extensive training of muscle memories and concentration (i.e. throwing an arm up for a biotic pull, wrapping themselves in energy before throwing them arms out for a charge, etc.). The asari are weird because they can naturally do this (such as when melding with a partner). It's noted that eezo-exposure in-utero can cause a lot of birth defects, that it is dangerous and risky possibly resulting in death of the fetus (and thus risking the mother's health, as well), and that not all such children exposed have biotic potential.*

Element eezo is radioactive and thus could cause cell mutations and degeneration, possibly resulting in tumors and cancers and other such undesirable affects.

In this case, it probably affected Ellen Ryder's nervous system. Maybe tumors or simple the destruction and death of cells along the neural network. As stated above, this can cause a variety of effects. It could be the eezo was forming tumorous growths that were interfering with the nervous system, scar tissue from dying and dead cells was building up and causing issues, or even something else entirely. Either way, based off what we see of her in-game, I lean a bit towards the causing of physical issues like sleep and appetite issues, seizures, potential paralysis and motor control issues. Although given the terminal nature of the disease, this could also have resulted in anxiety, depression, mood swings, and other such signs of mental illness (as we often see in our world even now from people suffering from terminal illnesses). One could eventually, if enough damage is done, progress into either direction.

*This is all to the best of my recollection on the games' codexes. Apologies if I made a mistake somewhere. I am just a fan, not a scientist. Further, the basis of my theory (assuming it might be similar to biotics' issjes due to eezo in some way) could be entirely false. Just thought I'd toss an idea out there?

Speaking of Ellen's illness. Neuro-degenerative... Does that imply the disease was affecting her brain issue, or I am I just helpless @ science terms? How can we even cure her (you might want to tag this as a spoiler) if it's affecting her brain tissue? Or is it not and am I just confused? Does anyone have any idea what her illness was actually DOING to her?

(So let me start of by saying I’m a neuroscience co-major, but I’m obviously still not an expert on this)

Yes; neurodegenerative implies that the neurons in her brain, either in a specific area or diffusely (it’s never specified), are dying. Other neurodegenerative disorders are things like dementia, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, etc. The effects of the disorder depend on where it’s acting. It could be things like motor impairments, memory impairments, mood changes, sleep changes, appetite changes, inhibition loss, anxiety, depression, apathy, maybe seizures, etc.

As for cures, I *think* the general consensus at the moment is that these disorders can be slowed, but not stopped? Once there’s damage in the brain tissue, it’s permanent. I think treatments generally focus on the symptoms and making the patient comfortable. That being said, there’s been a lot of research with stem cells lately, and I think a paper I read for one of my classes, mentioned that there was some evidence that stem cells could help ‘cure’ or at least treat Parkinson’s. By that point in time, the research on this would be a lot further along, so they could be closer to a cure, at least for comparable diseases (probably not Ellen’s, since it’s new). 

I think SAM works by slowing the damage? Ellen says as much in one of Alec’s logs. They don’t say specifically how though. 

I don’t know, what does everyone else think?
