O guardião das Coisas Perdidas – Ruth Hogan
Um livro passatempo, como um filme “de passar roupa”. Tem partes gostosas de ler, outras muito previsíveis. Nada a destacar.

Writer's diary three things of note - Ruth Hogan, a lookalike and raw dogging
Well, that was a week. Like the week before was and next week will be. Writer-wise, not much down on paper, but plenty to reflect on. Not least, an event for an author I’d not come across in a town I have only ever been to once or twice and have no real feel for: Ampthill feels as if it’s got far too may artisans and too many letters in its name. A short schlep but a long way from Luton. The…

Hey guys
Tell me what you’re reading!
I currently have a few things on the go because that’s how I roll:
The Phoenix Ballroom by Ruth Hogan which I’m reading for work reasons
Writing the Future which I’m reading for craft reasons
Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout which is my library read. I love her books so much
War and Peace, my current big reread, which I’m doing on ebook and on audio to mix things up!
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, which I’m rereading with friends who are reading it for the first time
Tevinter Nights, which I’m rereading with a server ahead of DATV!

Books read in 2024
Claude Rains: An Actor's Voice by David J. Skaal
The Collector by John Fowles
One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware (re-read)
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
End of Story by AJ Finn
The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix
Kill for Me Kill for You by Steve Cavenaugh
Carrie by Stephen King
The Broken Girls by Simone St. James
Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
The Invited by Jennifer McMahon
The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon (currently reading)
I was really trying to read more this year, as I admittedly lost time for it the past couple of years...and as you have probably noticed, the books I read have a bit of a theme. They are all horror/thriller/mystery stories (with the exception of Claude Rains' biography...though he is a horror icon, so it still sort of fits).
Now, this was not an intentional choice at the beginning of the year...I didn't even realize I was doing it until about August...and since I was already reading a horror story and I think had Carrie next in "my queue" (I had purchased a couple books at B&N), I decide to just continue this for the rest of the year!
If I had to pick my favorites from the year, I'd pick The Collector and Carrie. It's no real surprise, since I'm a big fan of both of their movie adaptations, but it was nice to finally check out the source material, and to read my first Stephen King novel! And I will say that I enjoy Jennifer McMahon's writing...someone recommended The Drowning Kind to me, and when I went to B&N to check it out, I discovered that she has written maybe seven books, all horror related. I ended up reading The Invited first, because the premise seemed really interesting...but after finishing, I went back and picked up The Drowning Kind to give that one a try, since I liked the way she presented her stories.
The Final Girl Support Group is a really fun read for someone who loves horror movies! Lots of references and easter eggs to classic horror from the 70's, 80's and 90's.
I'd recommend the Claude Rains' biography to anyone who loves old Hollywood, and of course, if you're a fan of Rains' work.
And finally, I didn't know until this year that Guillermo del Toro wrote fiction for the page, not just create icon horror for the screen!
#books#going to mix it up in 2025 with more than one genre lol#going to do a movie post in a few days#i'm seeing nosferatu on saturday and i may want to include thoughts

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Follies in Concert
June 20, 2024 | Transport Group Theatre | Carnegie Hall | Evening | Concert | Series | 2H 20M
FOLLIES FOLLIES FOLLIES. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY YEAR. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY LIFE(?)
Last night, Carnegie Hall was New York's hottest gay club as every one of us turned up to weep over Sondheim's breathtaking score, played by a divine 30-piece orchestra. Fifty Broadway actors shared the roles and songs of this wonderful show, culminating in a lineup straight out of our wildest dreams.
Though we were robbed of a Donna Murphy triumph with "Could I Leave You?" due to filming schedule changes, we received the impromptu comedy show of the year as Beth Leavel grappled with a broken mic stand and brought the house down anyway.
Kate Baldwin as another eleventh-hour addition proved to be the best moment of the night. Her "Losing My Mind" will go down in history as one of the most divine we will ever hear. Not since Marin Mazzie has a theatre been so rapt, so silent, so in awe. She's always struck me as a Phyllis, but now proves she has the range.
Jennifer Holliday does what she wants, and what she wants was a smooth and seductive "I'm Still Here" full of gravitas even as she meandered far from the written notes and rhythms. She turned a five-minute showstopper into a nine-minute showstopper complete with a standing ovation to open up act two.
Karen Ziemba led six of our finest dancing Broads over sixty (or even seventy)(Mamie Duncan-Gibbs, Ruth Gottschall, JoaAnn M. Hunter, Dana Moore, Michele Pawk, and Margo Sappington) in a "Who's That Woman" original choreography to a standing ovation.
So many thrilling performances, one after the other. I am deeply in love with Barbara Walsh now, and it's honestly a crime she and Carolee Carmello were so underutilized by only having "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" (Phyllis and Sally don't get much singing in that number, and it's a tragedy). I need to seriously contemplate the Barbara-Phyllis/Carolee-Sally dynamic immediately.
I am now dead. I have ascended. I will never come back to earth again. But the final tributes broke me. The reveal that Sondheim said in a private zoom reunion that Follies was his very favorite original score. The late Harvey Evans' epitaph. Original cast member Kurt Peterson ending the concert with "hey up there, way up there, what'd'ya say up there..." All of it underscored by Sondheim's brilliant work. I am in tears all over again.
Verdict: My Soul Transcended Space and Time

[instrumental opening]
[Verse A] They found a time to break your heart, eh? And the world like nothing happened, is spinning, eh? what can I say? let's see No, I don't have any clichés to throw around anyway If it hurts, then it hurts I'm here, if you want it, you know, to drink, to pour your heart out It's hard to see you fade away And also, you know what? maybe it's too early to get dirty After all, maybe you will come back, maybe there will still be wedding Actually fuck it, bitch Come on, let them know it hurts Even for Peres they once broke a heart Man, what is he dealing with? Guilt, pity, lonely heart I understand it's a little hard to cheer up But I checked the statistics and hear me out:
[chorus] This too shall pass Like the Kinley, like the Techno, like the Crocs This too shall pass Like the film, like Lior Miller, Samantha Fox This too shall pass Like the CDs, like the Walkman, you'll see soon, yo, yo Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass
[Verse 2] And the days pass slowly Suddenly the hardest is on Saturday Suddenly advice comes en masse They all became professors at Bassa (gloom, depression, disappointment. From the arab for swamp) Look at the full glass I poured some whiskey in it, it will be enough for another hour I have no advice, because who am I? You're smart, you understand it's temporary Yeah, right, you'll be a little scarred Life is not Seranga, not everything is smooth And how did Hazal say? (short for "our sages may they rest in peace") "Love will come and at the end you will say it was luck" Until then, put the head on a dune In the headphones - Tuna's disc I need you to be strong So that when I'm down, you'll remind me
[chorus] That this too shall pass Like the Kinley, like the Techno, like the Crocs This too shall pass Like the film, like Lior Miller, Samantha Fox This too shall pass Like the CDs, like the Walkman, you'll see soon, yo, yo Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass
[chorus 2] Like the talk show, like Napster, Club Soda This too shall pass Like Netscape, like Blockbuster, Golden Channels This too shall pass Like the y2k bug, the Tamagotchi, you'll see soon, yo Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass
[bridge] Like Kapolski, like the pouch, the T.L.V (Confectionery chain) This too shall pass Like the tyrannosaurus, like the grunge, a home phone line This too shall pass Like Ruth Gonzalez, Ronen Harazi, Dana Modan Like the Skinny, the tavern, the Eden Band, Eyal Barkan (1. jeans, 2. a boy band) Like Hulk Hogan, like hangover, Michal Zuaretz, Richard Gere (an actress) Hanoch Rosen, Sadam Hussein, Bureaks films, Karin Ofir (1. a mime, 2. a genre in Israeli film, 3. an actress) Like Tel'ad, like the milk caps, the Macarena, the innocence (a film studio) Like the roller skates, Peter Andre, the Atari the loneliness
[closing] (Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass Time heals everything, it heals everything If not all, the majority and that too will pass

the keeper of lost things.
dialogue prompts from the keeper of lost things: a novel by ruth hogan.
intimacy has always been a disappointment to me.
cleaning can be an act of love.
you must have loved [name] very much.
i'd say i'm pleased to meet you, but it would probably be a lie.
the wonderful thing about books is that they're films that play inside your head.
what's your book about?
are you sure you weren't adopted?
the air is thick with stories.
dress for yourself and marry for love.
a hush is a dangerous thing. it invites mischief.
i've never seen you cry before.
that's the last time i let you choose the film.
i just hope you'll be able to keep up with me.
i should've been a catholic. i do guilt so well.
the house is just somewhere i go when i can't be home.
i wonder what counts as a prayer.
the one thing we can always do is try.
is it safe to come in?
i wouldn't leave you this way. you're coming get me.
no one else knows. just you and god.
i'd love to hear the story.
old age is an unforgiving wingman.
you and i will take care of each other.
i don't think it, in my head. i just feel it.
what will you do without me?
there is a world outside. it's worth a visit, now and then.
do i look like i work here?
if you never get sad, how do you know what happy is like?
besides, everybody dies.
you always were completely spineless.
god, you look rough.
i don't think you're pathetic, just plain mean.
sometimes somebody has to say something, even if they're the wrong person to do it.
you deserve to be happy, but you have to make it happen yourself.
when did you turn into such a wimp?
no one's going to hurt you here.
i recognized your accent from the tv.
i'm trying to work out a dignified escape route.
you're the only one left, from the old days.
who on earth called you that?
things always look better in the morning.
what makes you so sure you'll die before me?
i'm not very good at clues. you'll have to make it clear and simple.
i'm sorry if you've tried to talk and i haven't listened.
