Kendrick, Drake, and Ethnic/Cultural Identity

One of the most discussed topics during this exchange between the two is if Drake is a culture vulture. In short, yes. He's always been. It boils down to inherited cultural identity and respected history, not the upholding of a social construct of “race.” 

Race is a goofy non-biological caste system that operates in various countries and it’s a dumbass global push to get people to embrace a superior to inferior hierarchy in classifying the globe into 5 broad groups solely based on perceived skull sizes, hues of skin color, and perceived traits and phenotypic features via the teachings of François Bernier, Johann Blumenbach, Carl Linnaeus, and them other hoes. Get race tf outta here.

I’m gonna make this concise as possible, but fleshed out a bit for full understanding.

Kendrick Lamar is Black American on both sides with his roots most likely coming out of Mississippi and/or Alabama to Chicago to Cali by way of the Great Migration. (He may even descend from Duckworths from Louisiana). I haven’t done his genealogy, but now I may out of curiosity.

Black American is a double ethnicity. We’re citizens of America (nationality = US Citizen), and our ethnic group (Black) was created & descends from this land (ethnicity = American) through ethnogensis. It has nothing to do with one’s brown skin color or how the cops see us 🙃, but everything to do with the lineage of one’s parents and their parents, etc. (For info on lineage tracing, refer to my post here.) 

Black Americans are an ethnic group (the largest from this land and largest in this country after Germans), while “white Americans” are a self-identification race to remove ethnic identity and conflate numbers. I can break this down further in another post if y’all want since American history is complex and will explain why Black Americans have been reclassified seven times by the US government 🙃. 

Now.

Culture is largely passed down through your mother, and her mother, and her mother, and so forth for Black Americans (and I’m sure other ethnic groups). No matter if it’s a two-parent or single-parent household, she’s your ultimate teacher in setting the foundation of your cultural upbringing. It’s the same if one is raised by their grandparents. It largely stems from the grandmother. If one’s father is their main parent, that’s a different case of course. 

Drake falls in line with this as someone from a single-parent household. He is half Ashkenazi of Latvian and Russian descent (ethnicity) through his mother and of half Black American descent (ethnicity) through his father. He is a dual citizen of Canada and America (nationality), who was raised in Canada with his Ashkenazi Jewish mother and Ashkenazi relatives with an Ashkenazi upbringing. He went to a Jewish day school and was engulfed in all aspects at home. 

Kendrick is ethnically and culturally Black American. Drake is ethnically and culturally Ashkenazi. He is also ethnically Black American (through lineage), but not culturally Black American. Does that make Drake a culture vulture? No. He just didn’t have the cultural upbringing but could always immerse himself in learning, appreciating, and respecting the other half of his history and culture.

What makes him one is how he operates as an outsider. He participates in an aspect of Black American culture (Hip-Hop) for his monetary gain, adopts a manufactured image for his perception of believability, and disrespects the people of this culture. “…run to America to imitate culture.” It’s like a jacket to him. He takes it off to try on another (like a Jamaican accent) and swaps for another, etc. 

A few examples that’s been touched on: He blackened his face to depict blackface while wearing a Jim Crow t-shirt… That’s specific disrespect towards Black Americans, mocking our history and our ancestors. “Whipped and chained you like American slaves.” That’s specific disrespect towards Black Americans, mocking our history and our ancestors. “[You] always rappin' like you 'bout to get the slaves freed.” Do I even need to explain this? Hopefully it’s understood.

The muthafucka is not like us.

INVESTIGATION OF ISRAEL'S "FLOUR MASSACRE" CONFIRMS ZIONIST FORCES RESPONSIBLE FOR SHOOTING HUNDREDS OF STARVING PALESTINIANS

An investigation by Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (EURO-MED) into the "Flour massacre", which saw 118 starving Palestinian civilians killed and nearly 800 wounded in what the Israeli occupation tried to blame on a "stampede," says it has produced evidence that the majority of casualties were actually caused by the firing of live Israeli bullets.

The Flour massacre occured on February 29th, 2024 near the Nabulsi roundabout on Al-Rashid street in Gaza City, where thousands of hungry Palestinian families gathered for the arrival of a humanitarian aid convoy carrying food to starving crowds that desperately needed sustenance.

Soon after the trucks arrived, gunfire erupted, including tracer rounds which could be seen in video evidence taken at the time, causing thousands of civilians to panic, running off in different directions in search for shelter.

The Israeli occupation authorities used heavily edited clips of night vision drone video to argue that nearly a thousand Palestinian casualties were a result of a stampede after Israeli forces fired rifles into the air to defend themselves from defenseless civilians desperate for food, whom they claim were looting the free food being distributed to the crowds.

So senseless was Israel's explanations for the atrocity, that even CNN's Christiane Amanpour, a normally deferential TV commentator who rarely resists the official narratives of the Israeli occupation, had to push back against Israeli officials on U.S. national television.

But a newly published report by the Geneva-based human rights organization, Euro-Med Monitor, says that many of casualties were in fact the result of the firing of live bullets that have been forensically analyzed and found to match those used by Israeli soldiers.

According to Euro-Med Monitor, "Many victims of the massacre" actually suffered injuries from "5.56x45mm NATO bullets," adding that, "this is a type of bullet fired from Israeli army weapons."

"A sample of 200 dead and injured victims revealed that they were indeed hit by this type of bullet, and that the bullets were discovered and examined at the massacre site along with shrapnel found in the bodies of the wounded and dead," Euro-Med said in its report.

After carrying out a forensic analysis of the type of bullets used, Euro-Med says it "discovered that [this type of bullet] is discharged from assault rifles like the M4 and Tavor, along with machine guns," specifically "light machine gun[s] or LMG" such as the "IWI Negev."

Euro-Med says its research "revealed that 5.56×45mm ammunition is a basic FMJ bullet used by the Israeli army."

"This type of bullet is imported from the United Kingdom on occasion, produced in 2020/2022, and licensed for use by the Israeli Ministry of Defense," the human rights organization said of its analysis.

Euro-Med added that the bullet "is also manufactured in Israel by IMI SYSTEMS," an Israeli company which manufactures weapons, ammunition and other military technologies, and "regularly supplies them to the Israeli security forces, including the Israeli army."

Citing testimony by Muhammad Yasser Washah, a local 17-year-old resident of Gaza City's Al-Sabra neighborhood who was present for the Flour massacre, along with its own analysis, Euro-Med said it retrieved a bullet lodged in the youths jacket after going through the bag of flour he had been carrying on the night of the atrocity.

After analyzing the bullet pulled from Washah's jacket, Euro-Med discovered that its "form and dimensions were identical" to the bullets mentioned previously, though this particular bullet is designed to penetrate several millimeters of solid steel.

Euro-Med recorded testimony from several witnesses to the horrific massacre, putting together a timeline for the events of that night.

According to witnesses, the Zionist army began "directly shooting at civilians" as they waited for food aid at "approximately 4:10am" on Thursday, February 29th.

By 5:30am, the Israeli occupation forces "raided the entire gathering, where many people were lying injured, killed or were attempting to flee."

Euro-Med says that many people were taken into custody by the occupation's soldiers, others were forced to flee south, while some "Israeli forces directly executed others and left their bodies on a nearby beach."

According to testimony given by a witness who asked for anonymity, Euro-Med quoted the witness as saying, "We were shocked when Israeli soldiers showed up and took a group of young men from Gaza [City]."

The witness added that “While the majority of them were fleeing to the beach, some were at the Nabulsi roundabout, others were evacuated to the south, and still others were killed and left on the beach.”

The witness also detailed the fate of a doctor named Muhammad Awad who had been detained by Israeli soldiers but was released soon thereafter, “he moved several steps away, they opened fire on him and wounded him in the shoulder…We were under siege until 6:30 am, and the injured were pleading with us not to leave them…The food and flour were covered in blood when I left."

A second witness who works as volunteer paramedic also asked for anonymity fearing retaliation. That witness told Euro-Med “In the hopes of receiving assistance, I went to the Nabulsi roundabout. As a precaution, I brought a first aid bag with me because I knew that similar incidents had resulted in shootings.”

The witness explained how shortly before 4:30am, the humanitarian aid trucks "passed the checkpoint and the Israeli army started firing, throwing stun grenades and smoke bombs" as an Israeli tank advanced towards the crowd.

“I treated several injured people with first aid. I discovered that some had suffered injuries to their chests, while others had suffered injuries to their limbs," the witness recounted, adding that, "while I was trying to pull out one of the injured people, the tank came forward, and I was forced to flee the scene." The witness concluded by saying, “there was a large number of dead and injured people.”

Euro-Med Monitor goes on to lay out four "key pieces of evidence confirming the Israeli army's involvement in the killing and wounding of starving civilians," including signs of injuries on the bodies of the dead and wounded, footage released by the Israeli occupation authorities themselves, as well as "audible evidence of gunfire emenating from Israeli tanks positioned near the coast."

The Human Rights organization also pointed to video evidence published by the Zionist occupation, which despite being heavily edited, shows the "sheer panic and intimidation that struck all of the civilians present - including those relatively far away from the aid trucks - and pushed them to flee in all directions in order to seek shelter."

Euro-Med also warned that Israeli shootings of starving Palestinian civilians attempting to receive humanitarian aid has "become a regular practice."

The organization stated that over the last few weeks, "Israeli forces have directly attacked and killed dozens of people in Gaza City, including on Salah al-Din Street and in the vicinity of the Kuwait roundabout, where it has occurred no less than twice since the Flour Massacre."

The most recent example of this kind of attack came just last night when, according to Euro-Med Monitor, "many civilians were injured by Israeli violence near the Kuwait roundabout."

The Euro-Med report goes on to slam the Israeli occupation for "starving the people of Gaza, killing the starving people, and obstructing the entry and distribution of humanitarian supplies, especially in Gaza City and the northern Strip, demonstrat[ing] Israel’s aim of forcibly displacing the Palestinian people there as part of its genocide, ongoing since 7 October 2023."

The investigation goes on emphasize that the Zionist army's "extrajudicial executions and intentional killings of Palestinian civilians" who have not taken part in the hostilities, "amounts to serious violations of International humanitarian law," and are considered "war crimes and crimes against humanity as defined by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court."

"These crimes, which Israel has been committing against the Gaza Strip’s people since 7 October, violate the right of Palestinians to life in accordance with international human rights law, and constitute acts of genocide," the Human Rights group added.

Euro-Med concludes it's report by urging the international community to take action to "force Israel to halt its starvation campaign" against civilians in the Gaza Strip, "in order to prevent the impending catastrophe of mass famine there, and to hold Israel accountable for its crimes and grave violations against the Strip and all of its Palestinian residents."

The Geneva-based human rights organization also issued a call for a "more effective and decisive" international intervention to "ensure the safe, complete, and reliable delivery of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip without any hindrance," and "thus guarantee the provision of and access to" basic goods and services desperately needed by the starving population in the Palestinian enclave.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Laws of Attraction (Sat iQIYI) 8fin - Oh the DRAMA. Why does the insane ex (my true love) remind me of the cartel leader from Romancing the Stone? Even the sides got HEA! It was fucking great!!!!! Charn remains a bonkers spoiled evil murderous brat with a cruel smile beloved by his one true paladin. Also: post it love note trope! Been a long while my old friend. NO SINGING!!!!! I do love that wedding jacket frock coat cape thing Charn wore. 

In conclusion: This is a great gay suspense thriller with several solid couples, fun plot, killer characters, queer rep, and a happy ending. Charn may be my favorite lead character of 2023. However, this show is not entirely BL, more on the fringe, like Manner of Death. Add that to several "singing incidents" and pairs being a little weak in the chemistry arena, and this lands safely in 9/10 territory. It’s tons of fun tho: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 

I Feel You Linger in the Air (Sat grey) ep 3 of 12 - This show is getting more and more lakorn each ep. Apparently the straights are having a class divide arranged marriage crisis. Who cares? Our boy is ALWAYS in trouble. Crazy that he has to save the people who betrayed him in a previous life - but I guess he chose revenge! That's unexpected.

Had to switch to grey and couldn’t find a working rip. It was frustrating and I wouldn’t have bothered except I like this show so much. Still, it means no screen caps because the rez is naff.

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 3 of 12 - Uh oh. Kang wants to save Sailom and be his hero. The fact that K’s Pa puts no pressure on him whatsoever, makes me wonder if K's Ma committed suicide or something? It’s definitely the opposite parental dynamic we normally see in BL. I have to say, the pacing is great in the show. And the acting is on point. It’s really great. 

Hidden Agenda (Sun YT) ep 8 of 12 - these two just kiss well. I mean not "rip your clothes off Taiwan-style," but sweet young boyfriends-esk. Joke wants to be claimed so bad. It’s great. I enjoyed this ep, unfortunately it looks like we have a manufactured angst drama drop in the next episode. Is this a 10 episode arc? I thought it was 12. It’s odd to have doom happening next episode already.

Only Friends (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - Back story time! Ray and Mew are HARD to watch. Incestuous friend group gay is the worst. Omg I got such QAF vibes from this ep. Nick Boston Sand chats = very throw back 90s gay soaps. 

Location game moment: Top's hotel room is also Chan’s apartment in Laws Of Attraction. 

Naughty Babe (Sat YT) ep 1 of 8 - Ooo. Est is back! Hi handsome. Head of security suits you. Please lead out the new Waterboyy remake? You’re perfect for the role. (If it must happen.) Yi’s Pa is GREAT. Please give daddy a nice boy? Could that be our secondary couple for this series? 

Meanwhile, with the leads (sorry I was distracted by daddy) we got us an arranged marriage, run away bride, and an amnesia trope. Put in a secret baby and it's squarely 1980's Harlequin. Will there be Vikings? Sex herbs? Pirates? Dub con?

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 9 of 12 - Again with lovely sex scenes, it’s just the plot stringing them together is frayed. Also don’t fuck in an onsen. Both yech and ouch.

That goes for all y’all.  

Wedding Plan (Wed YT & iQIYI) ep 7fin - Trash watch here! Honestly this was an okay ending, I’m not mad at it. If you can tolerate Mame and liars (kinda the same thing) you’ll be fine with this show.

Summation: An innocent wedding planner falls haplessly and hopelessly in love with a groom who relentlessly pursued him, even though he’s about to marry someone else. A somewhat lackluster mame offering with less of the usual stellar chemistry, but all of the usual lies and manipulation. 7/10

Love in Translation (Sat iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - I skip everything to do with Tammy and it’s fine. There’s only about 20 minutes of fine but that’s more than enough. On the bright side. So far. No singing.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 24 eps - Cassanova Begins Part 2. Aw. It was sad. Another variation on the “my ghost boyfriend” trope (usually sad). 2/10 I don't do sad BL.

Next up is Merry Go Round featuring the pair from Destiny Seeker (we likey) who want to marry each other, but end up fake engaged to the same woman. Beard squared? Looks silly.

Crazy Handsome Rich (Sun Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - There are 2 things I like about this. I bet you can guess what they are.

The 2 leads fucking around in the end credits was the funniest part of the whole show. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Jun & Jun (Korea Thur Viki) ep 7 of 8 - I am confused and frustrated about what the communication delay is between the two Juns. It feels artificial and narratively manufactured. But since this is a short form KBL and I know it will be resolved quickly, I’m not as annoyed as I would be if this were Thai BL. Still it feels audience manipulative. I also feel sorry for Simon. BUT it looks like it’ll be a sweet boyfriends final episode.

Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 10fin - Omg they’re so cute!!! Taiwan the purveyors of ultimate sappy gay domesticity. I am going to miss having these to nonsencing all over my dash.

This show was an interesting take on the "ghost boyfriend" trope. About a boy who is tormented by hearing the dead, except when he is around one other boy - desperation+proximity = love. Unfortunately, the story was erratic and waffled about. While the leads turned in solid performances and the sappy domesticity was off the charts, it never really had the strength of the narrative convictions such a strong concept should have supplied. Highly rewatchable and enjoyable for that sappy domesticity but not a whole lot more. Still I always give extra credit for the diabetes-inducing sugar content and rewatch capacity. 8/10 

Kisseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) eps 3 of 13(?) - I love the punching thing - there is a lot of violent flirting in this show. I’m not mad about it. Ugh, poor thing has real abandonment issues. And now trust issues. I see why we’re getting 12-14 eps. This gonna be MESSY.

Meanwhile, does EVERYONE have a guest cameo? Not that I’m complaining. Hi BLIHID boys! Now I need to rewatch that show. 

Love Class Season 2 (Korea Fri Viki) eps 7-8 of 10 - Oh my God the next morning w/ couple 2 was so darn cute. They are all such terrible flirts with each other. Honestly, this show makes me laugh more than any other BL currently airing. I’m not sure it is meant to be as funny as I find it. While couple 3 (the mature characters) is by far my favorite, I actually think they don’t work with the other two pairs, they feel superfluous to the show. I like the show better because they’re in it, but it feels like two different BL‘s stuck together. KBL certainly can’t handle more than two couple threads at the same time. 

Why R U? (Korea Wed iQIYI) eps 3-4 of 8 - Ugh. I am such a sucker for the FighterTutor dynamic. Why so good? Uh oh. Real kiss! KBL you're spoiling us. But, isn’t sad-seme-hyung dating some chick? Argh. Poor Sunwoo. This show is even worse at repping Fighter's character sympathetically. Who knew that was possible?

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - The date episode! Even Japan is doing it now. And these two who have been living/fucking together for ages still dance around each other like junior high kids. I gotta say, I watch this one twice because Vicki has different subs from Gaga. I feel like it’s easier to understand if I watch two different translations of the same script. But it’s still quite a taciturn piece. 

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) ep 8 of 12 - Sides are great. It was mostly a cute ep with tiny bits of Progress and a proper Confession. I miss Shin’s siblings. And then… the much loathed amnesia trope. Really?

Everyone say it with me: Must you, Japan? 

Stay Still (Hong Kong Tues YouTube) ep 5fin - It ended happier than I was expecting. Optimistic for one couple, and most likely optimistic for the other.

Summation: What to say about this offering from Hong Kong? It’s different, a mix of early CBL, Taiwanese shorts, and Pinoy visuals. It felt like the story was 2 independent shorts that had been lengthen and then stuck together, and I wish they'd been approached as separate and tighter entities. Nevertheless, this was a complex little piece,  interesting in a sweaty grungy way, with a certain aura of queer authenticity that made it simultaneously tense, unpredictable, and refreshing. I’m not sure I would necessarily call it BL, but any county’s early foray into the genre usually starts out this way, so perhaps nascent BL? Worth watching, especially if you enjoy stuff from the Philippines and Taiwan. 7/10

In case you missed it

Dinosaur Love ended its run but the final 2 eps are behind a paywall. Word on the street is they aren't good anyway (shocker) so I'm marking it as DNF and moving on with my life. If I can find em grey I'll watch 'em merely so I can give it a rating, but I can't imagine it will get more than 5/10. Seriously, do not bother.

Fast forward some more, Copper 9's core just collapsed, and Will is EXTREMELY annoyed by it. Because for the last couple of months, Will had actually been building the nerve to revolt and kill a human.

Not for some grand revolution or something like that, nah, he just really, REALLY hated the human in charge of the factory Will worked on. Straight up LOATHED him. Will knew that if he ever attacked a human, it would mean instant disassembling, but fuck it, it was worth it.

Then the core collapsed and killed al humans. Including the one Will was about to bash in the head with a wrench. Years later and he's STILL salty about the timing.

Fast forward some more, drones had begun to build a life for themselves, with many choosing to form communities and staying together. There's also plenty of drones that choose to live by themselves, Will is the later.

Unfortunately, those are the first targets of the DD once they arrive. Only reason Will makes it alive is because there were a LOT of targets running around, and Will happened to be one of the few that made it away.

Not unscathed tho, one of the DD grabbed him by the head and used him as a projectile to hit some other drones. He was able to reattach his hardhat/scalp but now its permanently crooked.

Years of living in hiding on the surface has resulted in many, many injuries. William (he decided that Will sounded to juvenile for him) was forced to mod himself using machinery from his old factory, becoming a scrap drone (like Alice)

His jacket sleeves kept getting caught in the seams of his new arm, so he just cut them off.

He doesnt need the glasses, btw. He stole them from the skeleton of the one guy he wanted to kill.

Although he does fear the DD a reasonable amount (as any sane drone should) he holds zero resentment towards them. Being angry at a DD for killing is like being angry at a worker for working. Its literally what they are made for. its chill.

But he does finds them EXTREMELY suspicious. Something doesn't add up about the DD. He is old, he has seen JCJenson products come and go for a long time, and those three? theres NO WAY those were designed and manufactured by JCJenson.

William becomes a bit of a conspiracy theorist about the DD, trying to figure them out.

So like some employees of carmine industries turn out to be like traitors or some shit(maybe they were working for carmilla just to get the manufacturing blueprint) so the employees try to corner Clara who is the head of the manufacturing department but unfortunately for them and fortunately for Clara, Odette had happened to be in the department during this event so she quickly heard what was going on and stepped in to help Clara. So Clara runs off to tell her mother who was leading sera and Emily through a tour of the place so she runs to find her mother and eventually she finds her and she is distraught, hardly able to get words out.

But unfortunately by the time they arrive to the scene, Odette is gravely injured with two angelic bullets through her chest with an angelic knife sticking out of her stomach while the employee’s bodies surround her. So obviously they freak out and bring her to the nearest hospital and Clara is inconsolable. Carmilla can’t comfort her, Emily can’t either, neither can sera, hell even Velvette and Kiki can’t comfort her. The posse nor Velvette were informed on what happened but all they know is that Clara is inconsolable because she wants her big sister so bad but she can’t see her.

“MOM!!!”

Carmilla, startled, practically falls out of her chair at the force with which her younger daughter slams her office door open. Clara comes bursting into the room, tears falling down her face, horns and glowing irises on full display as she practically stumbles into Carmilla’s arms. Zestial is also startled, looking up from where he’d been reading on the couch, spider web beginning to form behind his back at what he initially perceived to be a threat.

When their eyes fall on Clara, both overlords immediately stand down, waiting for Clara to compose herself. She’s pointing out the door, hand shaking and barely able to get out the words.

“O-ODETTE!”

Carmilla doesn’t need to hear more, and neither does Zestial. Instinct kicking in immediately, the two of them rush out into the hallway, and down two flights of stairs, where a throng of people have begun to gather around something sprawled onto the floor. Carmilla starts shoving her employees and patrons out of the way, not even caring if she’s a little rough with them. She needs to see what’s beyond this wall of bodies, and when she does, she practically chokes on a shout, holding her large claws up to her face.

Her eldest, Odette, is being cradled in the arms of Kiki, Clara’s partner, who’s trying her best to slow the loss of blood from two large wounds in Odette’s right shoulder with her jacket. Also, Carmilla notices with absolute horror, an angelic blade of her own making still sticking out of her daughter’s side. One of her designs. Who would— How— Who had done this?

“It was one of the lab guys!” Clara shouts, as if reading Carmillla’s mind. “He was coming for me, and Odette—I-I killed him!”

That’s when Carmilla notices the other body in the room, this one dead, torn in half, and pierced through several times in the face with something sharp. She can’t identify him, because he doesn’t have a face left. One of her angelic pistols lays on the floor mere feet from the body.

It’s just like the drone that had tried to attack Sera — someone is using her weapons against her, and they’d actually succeeded this time!

Carmilla’s brought out of her shocked state at a cry from Odette, who’s gripping at Kiki’s shirt like she’s trying to talk through the pain. “Mo-oom!”

Not wasting anymore time, Carmilla grabs Odette out of Kiki’s arms, as carefully as possible, and yells at Zestial, “Zestial! Portal! Now! Sloth ring!”

Zestial nods, and without a moment’s hesitation, he opens a portal to Sloth. Before he and his dear friend disappear through the portal, Clara tries to follow, and Carmilla pushes her back.

“You stay here!” Carmilla demands, almost frantic.

“But…” Clara starts. “What about Odette? I can help!”

“We’ll handle it,” Carmilla insists. “I need you here. Please! Call Lucifer! Tell him to meet me at Belphegor’s! And hold down the fort for me.”

Clara acts if she might protest again, but she doesn’t. She nods, wiping away the snot and tears from her face, and by the time she blinks again, her mother and Zestial are gone.

It takes less than 5 minutes between the time Carmilla and Zestial get Odette to Belphegor’s clinic, before she is rushed into emergency surgery. It takes only a minute longer for Lucifer to appear, and once Zestial brings him up to speed on Odette’s condition (because Carmilla has gone verbally catatonic at this point) the king also enters the surgical theater. He’s not a doctor, but he has enough healing magic to be helpful. If she needs a transfusion, Carmilla is present. Thankfully, it doesn’t come to that point. Thank Heaven for that.

When Carmilla is finally allowed to enter Odette’s room in ICU more than 3 hours later, she doesn’t think she’s ever seen Odette in such a critical state. Her face is covered with tubes, there are bandages all over her body, especially around her midsection, and she’s been put into an artificial coma to help speed her healing. Lucifer is also there, covered in sweat, and looking exhausted. He’d worked so hard for her daughter. He just breathes slowly, trying to recover his energy, and smiles when he sees she’s entered the room.

“How is she?” Carmilla asks, trying to keep it together, and not cry in front of her king.

“She’ll survive,” Lucifer says, slumping into his chair. “But it’s going to take a while. You’re very lucky to have brought her here as quickly as you did.”

His wings are out — Lucifer always brings them out when he’s nervous or feeling uncertain. It’s a small quirk of his. Carmilla notes he must really be worried, if that’s the case.

“Can I stay with her?” Carmilla asks, reaching out for Odette with her claw, but not yet touching.

“Yes,” Lucifer says, finally putting away his wings. He takes off his hat, and wipes his brow with his sleeve. “Just don’t touch her. Not yet. She’s full of mine and Bel’s healing energy, but she must NOT be moved or jostled around too much. Hear me?”

“Yes,” Carmilla says, sighing with a small modicum of relief, but only just. Odette has an extremely difficult fight ahead of her. She won’t do anything to sabotage that, no matter how much she wants to hold her girl.

As Lucifer is turning to leave, Carmilla stops him. “Lucifer! Thank you! If there’s ever anything I can do to repay you, please…just tell me.”

Lucifer smiles at her, leaning on his cane to remain standing upright. He’s also trying not to show how tired he is, but it’s not working.

“Of course, Carm. Don’t even mention it.”

As Carmilla is left alone with Odette, a million different thoughts race through her mind. How could she have let this happen? How could she have fucked up and let her guard down so horribly? Who is after her, and what the fuck do they want? It couldn’t have just been the one demon — who wants her dead this badly? All of these questions and more are at the forefront of her mind, and she doesn’t know the answer to any of them.

The only thing she does know, and the thing she keeps whispering quietly into Odette’s ear, hoping her daughter can hear her, is that Carmilla will find out who did this, and make them pay. She will kill them herself, if she has to. She’ll never let anything like this happen again. Odette twitches, as if she’d heard her mother. It’s only at that moment that Carmilla’s composure finally drops, and she openly sobs, not caring who hears her.

Hi! this is a mainly DnD based question that sorta runs into Fable-

So I'm currently running an entirely underwater campaign! The species I've included is basically every aquatic DnD species (some with a few twists) along with some homebrewed underwater dragonborn, etc-

However, I'm having trouble with choosing a clothing type to put on the sea elves? My version has them more telchin-ish- aka, maybe funky colored human base with longer legs, a tail, and I've given them webbed, frog-like feet and fins in a variety of places.

Logically, they honestly really wouldn't wear clothes- but I'm not doing that because that'd make certain scenes very hard to draw-

so what do you generally imagine the telchin wearing? normal clothes, edited versions of those, etc? Right now I have the two sea elves my party interact with on a regular basis in sort of tank-top-esque wear and edited shorts of a kind.

I have a post somewhere here on my blog about Telchin clothing and specifically my development of Ulysses design and the cultural influences, which basically boils down to “Telchins at the start of war = Ancient Greek clothes (chitons, togas, cloaks, etc). Telchins during the projects = WW2 fashion (pants, jumpsuits, jackets, etc)”

If you wanted my thoughts on how I would maybe clothe them in a broader sense/outside the context of Fable, I have some ideas! ✨

I think tank tops and shorts definitely fit the vibe. More-modern style clothing just underwater is always a super fun route to take, even for the visual of just clothing underwater being funky and something that’s a little different and new!

Typically in my mind, when it comes to clothing in world building it usually boils down to resources and purpose.

Resources is more the boring side of things. What kinds of materials do they have access to, how do they manufacture the clothing, blah blah blah. Not really something you need to worry about in fantasy worlds cause usually the answer is “cause magic” and “because it’s cool so I said so” which is the more fun kind of fantasy imo, and getting too bogged down in the granular details as a DM/storyteller just ain’t very productive.

Purpose on the other hand is where you can really have fun with underwater clothing! Is it designed to be functional, or stylistic? If its purpose is to be functional, maybe their clothing develops like swimsuits, almost? Like you said: shorts, crop tops, swim-shirts, etc! Something that covers enough or the body while still not being too cumbersome in the water, prioritizing movement when swimming! Or maybe you want to take that to the extreme; maybe their clothing developed like wetsuits! Skintight, smooth, shiny, and insulating! Designed to move with them, just a layer of covering for their bodies to make them more hydrodynamic! Or, if the purpose of the clothing is to be attractive and fashionable and flashy, maybe they do go in a more Greco-Roman route! Maybe it’s all about togas and dresses and cloaks and veils! Layers of long, flowing fabrics which shimmer and billow out in the water and draw attention to the person wearing them! These huge billowing clothes which make a statement, rather than help with movement or anything!

And it doesn’t have to be one or the other, either. You can mix and match both! Maybe the skintight wetsuit-like clothes are designed with patterns that ripple and shift as the wearer moves and they become beautiful and hypnotic! Maybe the large billowing cloaks are useful when avoiding predators underwater, making the wearer seem bigger, scarier and more imposing to any underwater monsters! The telchin’s clothing in my eyes follows a direct path almost: the fashionable pre-war clothing in billowing fabrics which allow freedom of movement and expression, that slowly transition into cleaner, more tailored clothing as they need to conserve fabric, and avoid being grabbed by drowned, losing that expression in the process. There’s so much room to play around with elements of either or both when it comes to it!

I know this was very rambling but I hope it was somewhat helpful!! Your campaign sounds really cool, an underwater campaign is such an interesting concept!! I hope you have fun running it!

hi, friends! i've been unwell most of the past week, so writing's been a struggle. i woke up feeling considerably better this morning, though, and managed to unearth and clean up something from the archives.

this is another snippet of the amnesia fic from a billion months ago. i forgot how much i loved this concept, but still have no idea how it ends, so idk when it'll see the light of day again.

She was much the same as she had ever been, pretty and leggy and bright in flat sandals and a short, white sundress, a cobalt blue bikini top peeking out. Her hair was lighter, like sun bleached bone, and her skin was kissed golden, darker freckles sprayed sweetly across her nose and forehead.

"That's her," Klaus confirmed

"My associate claims there's been no sign of her mother. She still introduces herself as Caroline, but he ran into difficulty unearthing a surname or current residence."

There were so many places he wanted to take her. A summer tourist town in a remote part of Downeast Maine wasn't one of them, but she looked like she belonged there. He easily envisioned her, windswept on a sailboat, laughing in a lobster bib, perched on a rocky outcrop like a siren, while he painted her against the offing.

“How incompetent are your minions, brother, that they cannot follow one teenage, amnesiac vampire home?”

“An excellent question, one I posed to Jean-Marc. He was adamant it was through no fault of his own.” Elijah left Klaus leaning over the photographs spread out on the table and shrugged off his suit jacket before collapsing into an armchair near the unlit fireplace.  “I'm inclined to believe him. He swears there is mind magic at work. Every attempt he made at ascertaining her location ended back where it began, his memory not erased, but blurred. He described it as neither like, nor entirely unlike compulsion.”

Klaus picked up one image: Caroline at a large, bustling farmer's market. She was holding a melting, chocolate ice cream cone and laughing with a tall, handsome young man running a smoked game meat stall, as he offered her a paper napkin.

“How has this happened?" he murmured. "Rebekah, Hayley, her friends were all made to forget. It took weeks of everything seeming off-center for my own mind to break and then heal itself."

"Whereas I never forgot her, nor her mother."

"A conservation of power, perhaps. You would have had no reason to think of her if I hadn't broken free from the manipulation."

He glanced over at his brother, finding him stone-faced and grim, the angular lines only he had shared with Finn carved in gargoyle relief.

“I find I must apologize, Niklaus," he admitted, still focused somewhere beyond Klaus. "I assumed your insistence on obtaining the cure had more to do with either the manufacture of more hybrids or simple paranoia. I should not have underestimated your misgivings regarding the extent of Silas's power.”

“We all underestimated him,” Klaus admitted absently and moved to pour himself a drink. He froze halfway to the decanter and instead pointed directly at Elijah. “It could be witches. An artifact. An alchemist's creation. Any number of things. Your conclusions, however, went directly to Silas, even though he was desiccated and, if Stefan did his job, dropped down a very deep hole.”

Elijah remained silent long enough that Klaus thought he might not answer at all. In the end, he pressed his thumb and forefinger against his closed eyes, rubbed them wearily, and acquiesced. “I thought perhaps it best to wait, given that I have not confirmed it myself. Jean-Marc was asked to look for an infant vampire with remarkable control over her impulses, but so far as he has been able to ascertain, the girl is human.”

Klaus looked at her again, at the smile that always made him feel found and lost and found again. At her hands, bare of the gaudy daylight ring that had never quite matched her more understated taste in jewelry. He threw the photo back onto the table and took out his phone, finding the contact for someone he grew more and more convinced would never answer again. His fear grew as the call went to voice-mail once and then twice.

“Ripper,” he grit out the third time, crisp and vicious. “If you do not return this call with all haste, you'd best hope yourself already dead.”

With careful, delicate fingers, he replaced the phone into his pocket. The roaring in his ears made him spin with vertigo, his vision blurring out of focus. He bowed his head until his chin touched his chest.

There had been so many places he wanted to take her.

“Niklaus,” Elijah began in that calming tone Klaus had always hated.

He responded by picking up an antique mahogany chair and turning it into kindling against the far wall.

“This is my fault,” he seethed amongst the splinters. “I should never have left her there alone. To hell with her independence. I should have forced her to come with me.

“She would have hated you for it. I only spoke with her a few times, but she didn't strike me as the sort of woman who responds well to orders and subjugation.”

He laughed bitterly. “I wouldn't have heard the end of it. Yet, she would be here, furious, but alive and safely immortal. Not counting down her days, nothing more than a vessel containing some ancient witch's spell ingredient.”

“I suppose remarking on the irony won't do your temper any favors, will it?” Elijah sighed at the venomous glare Klaus leveled at him. He loosened his tie and undid the top buttons of his shirt. Unfastened his cuffs for good measure and began rolling his sleeves. “If Silas fed her the cure, he must have a way to extract it. It was too precious to him to waste on a petty revenge he assumed you would never know about.”

FOR CONTEXT: Major League Baseball (the MLB) recently switched over their uniform manufacturers. The new manufacturer is, quite simply, VERY bad. Not only are the actual jerseys terrible quality, but the pants that players have to wear are pretty much completely see-through. It is a (hilarious) disaster, and therefore, these headcanons were born. For more context, read HERE.

Refuses to wear the pants: Seungcheol, Joshua Seungkwan

Seungcheol, being the leader if of the team, sees all the issues with the pants and refuses to wear them out of rage. He runs a CLASSY team. He secretly also refuses because he knows one squat into his catching position and those pants will be ripped to shreds. He's the first to take it up with the players union and argue that the team will not be playing with those ridiculous pants. Joshua, while sometimes a chaotic gremlin, knows his limits, and he is not willing to let his mom see him do his job with so much visible because of the pants. He will still absolutely tease the hell out of the members who chose to wear the pants, but no way you are catching him wearing them himself. He is also taking bets on who rips their pants first. Seungkwan also refuses to wear the pants, echoing pretty much everything Seungcheol says with extra sass, like "YES" "YOU TELL THEM". He has dignity as well as personality and he intends to keep both.

Comes up with a creative solution to wear the pants: Wonwoo, Woozi, Seokmin, Minghao, Vernon

Wonwoo outright hates the see-through pants, and the only way he will wear them is if he wears his team-issued jackets around his waist for the whole game/practice. He doesn't care if its not regulation or if he gets fined. If he has to wear the pants, he will be doing it his way - jackets on. Woozi, while pissed, accepts his fate knowing that Seungcheol will probably fight the league until its fixed. Until then, he's doubling up on pants and underwear to try and keep some dignity. Seokmin will let out a horrified scream after putting on the pants and seeing that they are very see through. He will see that some of the others are doing double-pants and other various solutions and will join in, but likely with more flare. Like, it will be glaringly obvious that he is trying to hide how see-through the pants are. He will also be the first to rip through them. Minghao sees the complete see-through-ness of the pants and knew something had to be done, so he takes his pants to a tailor to get them reinforced and make them less see-through. Everyone else is jealous because they didn't think of that first. Vernon, being the chillest human ever, just decides to wear extra pants over the see-through ones, from other baseball pants to swim trunks - whatever he can find just to cover up for the time being. He will absolutely walk out to the field during their first spring training game wearing basketball shorts over his pants.

Wears the pants: Jeonghan, Jun, Hoshi Mingyu, Chan

Jeonghan decides to wear the pants because he knows that he's not going to be seen that much anyway, and honestly he's got other things to worry about than his pants being see-through (like his next bullpen cat nap or how to beat Joshua at cards during their next travel day) Jun, an unbothered king, just rolls with it. He's like "welp, another day of the baseball, time to get dressed" and embraces the see-through. Jun doesn't realize they are see through until he is out on the field doing warm-ups and by that point he's like "eh why not". He actually enjoys how breezy they are. Hoshi could be categorized with the "creative solution" team, but honestly he's just so excited to play that he really doesn't care about how see-through the pants are. He will absolutely try doing high-kicks and back-flips as a means of testing just how see through the pants are. He will also use this opportunity to push the horangae agenda with pride. Minimal shame is seen from him. Mingyu wears the see-through pants. He doesn't realize they are see-through at first. The team tries to convince him they are not see-through and it almost works. It gets to a point where he just says "screw it" and embraces the see through. He knows he looks good, but he will be shyly blushing the entire time. Chan, despite Seungcheol's protests and teasing from various teammates, wears the pants with (mostly) confidence. He's a grown man, he can do what he wants. If they are see-through, they are see through. He's there to play baseball, that's pretty much it. Jeonghan does try to get him to cover up, but he refuses.

Dell

"Male", he/him, 165cm, Hyperdyne Systems 120-A/2

Role: Medical officer/biologist

Assignment: Special Research Vehicle - Solaris

Backstory:

Although Dell is the same model synthetic as Ash, he was made in an earlier round of releases. Minor differences in software/hardware specs means his capabilities also differ slightly.

He was brought on to the Solaris, a W-Y and 3WE funded special research vessel, as part of the early test run of synthetic officers on long-haul flights. Their medical officer had just retired and they needed a replacement.

Dell incurred some manufacturing defects, he was put on watch in case there was significant damage instead of being destroyed outright. His issues were deemed minor and so he was put on the B-grade product catalogue. It was Jude Wilheard, the Solaris' chief engineer's idea to check the cheaper synthetics.

Personality and mannerisms:

As a crew mate he's well-meaning but dense. Unlike Ash, he's very wary of the crew's health and safety, but also easily moved to action by their collective bravado and impulsiveness. (there is no voice of reason on this boat, sorry)

He is terminally curious but lacks situational awareness, often leading him into trials and tribulations ranging from walking into doors to getting caught in fights that he could have avoided.

A bit too willing to trust humans and has a hard time recognising red flags. He's also skittish and easily shaken and has a tendency to stall/freeze up in unfamiliar situations. Which means he often gets into trouble and can't get himself out.

He has a one-track mind and dedicates himself to his work and enjoys learning about alien lifeforms (very much not aware that he's in a horror movie world.)

The speed of his processing is slightly below target for his specs and is noticeably slower than the current models. Due to the less than stellar comments from the company's product testing department, he underestimates his abilities and is often unsure of his own judgement. He's also a bit of a people-pleaser and wants all humans to like him very much, is easily manipulated, and becomes frustrated quickly.

Participating in human activities is a key part of his daily life, and he's heavily involved with the humans' personal lives. His crew is very close with him and they all function as a single unit, very in sync with each other's habits and needs.

Something else that differentiates him from Ash is his body language. He moves in a meandering, unhurried manner rather than the sharp and purposeful way most synthetics carry themselves. Dell experiences a lot of emotions and expresses them often, he's quite animated and easy to read.

Easily excitable, friendly and gullible, his personality is quite a surprise to those expecting the detached demeanour of most synthetics, almost the opposite of Ash.

Appearance and other physical attributes:

A man in his mid fourties, short and slightly chubby. Looks almost exactly like Ash except for a 'scar' on the left side of his head from an injury that's hidden by his hair and the slightly discoloured splotch under his left eye. It's barely visible and most people don't notice unless its pointed out.

Compared to Ash, Dell has a 'kinder' looking face, his standard expression is more placid, which sometimes gives people the impression that he's an airhead.

While it's not immediately obvious from the outside, his right hip joint is structurally malformed and causes the limb to rotate inwards which also affects the positioning of his leg. The deformity does not impact his mobility much aside from a noticeable limp and uneven stance, he walks slowly to minimise the effect. Most days he doesn't need a mobility aid unless the misaligned components become worn down, requiring maintenance.

Wears a different outfit/uniform that's more suited for field work

Durable woven, water-repellent synthetic fiber work jacket with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow and matching cargo pants. Muted grey-green with a slight shine.

Inner layer is a white, sleeveless high-necked shirt

Often paired with white, wrist length cotton PVC dotted gloves

Off-white, steel-toed work boots

Solaris and Weyland-Yutani patches on the jacket sleeves

Green cotton cadet cap

Extendable cane with built in stun gun function (Wilheard's design)

Misc. info:

Likes to play with bugs and make entomology mounts

Powers down to sleep mode during night hours. Sleeps curled up in a ball and sleepwalks if alone due to faulty motor suppression mechanism
