Before I get into the lore, I wanna tell ya about the first Puyo game's release in the west.

In japan, it was in many things. In the west, on three versions were ported:

The Arcade Version

The Genesis Version

Super Puyo Puyo (The Super Nintendo Version)

But they were all...altered.

I'll go in order of least altered to most

So the arcade version edited sprites, changed voice clips, and weirdest of all, changed all but TWO character's names! And the story was slightly altered.

In the original, Arle discovered a spell that let's her use puyo puyo to cast spells, and when Satan does his things she goes to stop him, fighting people with Puyo along the way.

IN THE ARCADE, Silvana is trying to protect her home from The Black Kingdom led by The Dark Prince.

Now I understand changing Satan's name and will henceforth call him by his localized name. But the rest don't make sense.

Skeleton-T is just Skeleton

Nasu Grave (an eggplant creature) became Blue Ghost

Draco became Dragon Woman

Suketoudara became Goby Captain

Sukiyapotes became Small Foot

Harpy became Dark Elf

And Rulue became Lulu

Now if you know Japanese, you may think the last one makes sense. Rulue's Japanese name, ルルー, can be romanized as Ruru, Rulue, Lulu, or Lurue. However, in the credits of the Japanese Version of the game, all the characters have their names localized, and how is her name romanized? Rulue!

For a long time, people thought it was a bootleg.

The Genesis version was reskinned. Like what happened to turn Doki Doki Panic into Super Mario Bros. 2, this game was turned into Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

Odly, Sonic isn't in the game, the conversations between protagonist and opponent are gone, replaced with the enemies talking to the player, and it was based specifically on the show The Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog. Most of the opponents are literal BACKGROUND characters that only appeared in the pilot!

Some music was remixed. And made terrible. Brave Of Puyo Puyo hurts my ears in that game. And Final Of Puyo Puyo, the final boss theme, is instead the two player theme!

And the Snes version was reskinned into Kirby's Avalanche. Aside from gameplay it's nothing like Puyo Puyo, except...

There are still conversations between player character and opponent. Meaning Kirby talks. And trash talks. Alot

I nearly always follow recipes exactly. My mum is like oh cook this for about 7 minutes? Yeah sure. I’ll take a wild guess. I’m like they say exactly 7 minutes so I’ll set a timer for 7 minutes and start a stopwatch so if it does seem to need more than 7 I can keep an eye on the extra time and be aware of exactly how long it takes me for next time. Other people are like oh let's see I have [lists 5-10 things in their fridge], hmm...oh I know what I could make with that! I’m like I have beans in my freezer because one recipe required them and no other recipes I know how to make do so what am I supposed to do with these now,,, this is stressful,,, basically I barely know how to cook and recipes are the only things saving me in that area. That is entirely fair. Except for the fuck duck, and murder is not the word you want surely, situations, it’s pretty helpful.

Oh I’m absolutely terrible even by most people’s standards around here when it comes to cold and hot temperatures. I remember sitting in the sun in my school shirt and school jersey in summer on a blazing day like it’s a bit chilly, isn’t it? Meanwhile my friends were in the shade absolutely dying from the heat. Likewise in winter I’d be shivering, teeth chattering, dying with my long sleeve thermal, my school shirt, my school jersey, my school jacket, my longs, warm socks and sneakers and gloves and school scarf while ppl would be walking around in a shirt and shorts like it’s a bit warm this winter huh? my body didn’t learn how to thermoregulate and it shows. But yeah NZ does also have a reputation for shittily insulated buildings and such. I was typically a very good saver, to the point where my extended family started gifting me gift cards and vouchers for Christmas and my birthday because if they just gave me money I’d put it in my bank account to save towards uni once I hit like, 12 years old. It was kind of exciting.The idea had been spread out in the server months ago, about a potential meetup, about heading down to visit a con together, but no one had really begun to take it seriously until Kuroba had bought his ticket and asked when they’d be getting theirs.

Then, things had started to progress.

Nakamori had bought hers quickly after, probably because she knew Kuroba in real life, was a classmate. And then, Kudo and Mouri had joined in too, the couple buying their tickets and talking about how they needed to pay for travel down from Kyoto and would stay with Suzuki there.

With five of the server members heading to the same con, all of them with tickets for the weekend, the meetup hadn’t been a joke anymore. It’d been something a bit more… real, something they all got to do.

It was kind of exciting.

Hattori and Toyama had bought their tickets, and then, Makoto had slowly mentioned how he wasn’t able to make the full weekend, but he’d meet them on the Saturday.

Shiho had presented her ticket in such a manner that the entire server had blown up.

Even Saguru himself had been pleasantly surprised by her decision to head to the meetup, and he’s known her since they were little kids. Back when she lived in England.

“You’re going?” He says now, glancing at her from the screen of his iPad, where they’re facetiming. Laid back on his bed, throwing a stress ball up into the air and catching it with repetitive flicks of his wrist, he pauses. “…Really?”

Shiho smirks. “Why not?”

“Just doesn’t seem like your style I guess,” Saguru says. “It took you weeks to go into the VC with everyone, now you’re ready to meet them?”

She rolls her eyes. And for a moment, Saguru pauses in throwing his ball so he can watch her expression instead. It doesn’t seem nervous, more amused at the sight of his scepticism.

“We’ve been talking in the server for over a year now,” Shiho says. “Attending a meetup doesn’t seem so scary.”

Saguru raises an eyebrow. “Right.”

“Plus,” Shiho continues, “you’re coming with me so it’ll be fine even if it’s a disaster.”

Mainly because the con is in Tokyo, and Saguru lives just outside of London, almost six thousand miles away. Maybe because that’s kind of, impossible, even if he does visit Tokyo each year to see his father, it’s won’t be summer break yet, and he’d never be able to convince his mother to let him fly a week early for some con.

“Oh babe,” Shiho says, Saguru’s lips curling up into a faint laugh at the pet name. “You’re coming to the con, even if I have to fly over and steal you myself.”

“You’re suggesting kidnapping.”

A laugh. “If you’re going to be technical with it, then yes.”

He cracks an eye open, watches her face and sighs. He supposes he could ask about it, but he doesn’t’ know if there’s a point.

“Come on,” Shiho continues, “you should ask. You think your mother will say no to letting you visit your dad early this year?”

“I doubt she’ll say yes.”

“Well I doubt she’ll say no.” For a moment, she pauses. “It’ll be fun, trust me. You should try and come.”

Saguru bites the inside of his cheek, takes a moment to consider it. He does trust Shiho, and he knows he’d have fun there �� especially meeting up with the friends he’s been talking to for months.

“Okay,” he asks. “Fine. I’ll ask.”

*Notes on the AU:

It’s called the fandom AU. Everyone is in the same fandom for a side series written by Kudo Yuusaku, which is an aside set from the detective’s POV for the Night Baron series.

They’re all in fandom for different reasons, of which I’ll get more into within the fictober because this will be my au to play with for the month!

Saguru lives in England but visits his dad in Tokyo ever summer during school breaks.

Shiho grew up in England and went to primary (elementary) school with Saguru but moved back to Japan went she was like 10? They kept in contact with each other despite this and they both visit each other when they’re visiting family in their respected other countries.

Shiho and Saguru are best friends who call each other pet names to be ironic. No romantic feelings harbored since this is eventual HakuKai.

They’re talking on discord, which is why their chat is formatted to be like discord’s compact mode.
