Timelessly Ours by Roxanne Tully My rating: 5 of 5 stars Thank you to Roxanne and Midnight Readers PR for providing the ARC, these thoughts and feeling are my own. I was so excited to finally read the coach's story. Royce Collins is a single dad trying to stay connected with his daughter and also incredibly busy coaching hockey. Our female main character is Nicole, a friend of Coach's eldest daughter. The eldest daughter used to watch his youngest but is now romantically involved with one of the players on the team. Rory, the youngest, goes through babysitters like water, and Nicole ends up sitting for her. This leads to her becoming the nanny for for Rory. So naturally we will have the following tropes: - Nanny and Employer - Daughter's best friend/Best friend's dad - Age Gap - Sports (Hockey) - grumpy/sunshine - dual pov I loved a lot about this story. Especially how patient Royce was with Nicole and her recovering alcoholism. The story is dual pov, so it was great to see how they felt about each other. There was also a super interesting plot twist at the end. I will happily continue the series if more books are written. View all my reviews

Intercambian algunas palabras, copas van, vienen y un beso lo cambió todo para ambos. Madison es decidida y no se rinde fácilmente, es una joven reportera de un famoso periódico de Nueva York. Luke es joven, misterioso y a temprana edad decidió ser el nuevo dueño del equipo de béisbol más conocido, Los Halcones. Que puedo decir... es la primera vez que leo a la autora y la verdad que disfrute de leer la historia de estos dos personajes. La historia atrapa desde el primer momento. Nos envuelve en todo el proceso de investigación de la protagonista que también se encuentra completamente relacionado con otros personajes que a lo largo de la novela se nos van revelando. Es una lectura que mezcla un poco de misterio, secretos y romance que no podes dejar pasar. ¿Lo recomiendo? Por supuesto! Mistaken Identity And The Fourth Amendment

In July of 2014, Roxanne Torres was getting into her car parked near an apartment complex in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two police officers in an unmarked police car were attempting to find and arrest another woman who they knew lived at the apartment complex, but they had not been able to locate her. The two police officers saw Torres and decided to approach her. Torres was frightened by the officers, who were wearing dark uniforms. The officers got out of their car and ordered Torres to open the car door. In a classic case of mistaken identity, Torres believed the officers were carjackers because of their dark clothing, so she began to drive away. The two police officers pulled out their weapons and fired into Torres’s car, hitting her twice. Despite being hit twice in the back by the bullets, Torres kept control of the car, eventually reaching a hospital where her wounds were treated1. Torres was accused of several crimes related to the incident including evading law enforcement. Torres did not contest the charges2.

It is important to note there are conflicting claims about several details of the events that night. The police officers have asserted they were in front of the car when they approached it, and Torres began driving toward them at a high speed. The officers argue they drew their weapons in self-defense. Torres contests this saying the officers were standing to the side of her car. In addition, the officers argue they were wearing clearly displayed badges so Torres could not have mistaken them for carjackers. Torres argues she did not see the badges because it was extremely dark in the area where her car was parked3.Amidst these conflicting details, Torres filed a lawsuit against the police officers.

Torres filed a lawsuit in 2016 arguing her Fourth Amendment rights had been violated3. The Fourth Amendment prohibits “unreasonable searches and seizures.” The amendment prevents the police from arbitrarily seizing either a person (by arresting them) or their property. Generally, if the police arrest someone without a warrant and donot have good reason to believe the person committed a crime, then the police have violated the amendment. Torres argued that by shooting at her, the officers had effectively tried to arrest her without a warrant and thus had violated her rights. The police officers argued they had not violated the Fourth Amendment since they had never actually seized Torres because she escaped. The district court and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the police, ruling that the officers had not seized Torres and thus could not have violated the amendment2. Torres appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear it in December 2019. The case was initially scheduled to be heard in March but was delayed due to COVID-19.

The question the Supreme Court will be deciding is: If a police officer tries and fails to arrest a person without a warrant or cause to believe a crime has been committed, has that person’s Fourth Amendment rights been violated? Current Fourth Amendment law is unclear on this question. Based on previous rulings, the Tenth Circuit and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals hold that a person’s rights in this situation would not be violated, while the Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuit Courts hold that a person’s rights would be violated4. This split in the courts is likely part of the reason the Supreme Court agreed to take up the case.

One unusual aspect of the case is several progressive and conservative legal organizations are in agreement on this question. Progressive organizations such as the NCAAP5and the ACLU6as well as conservative organizations such as and the Rutherford Institute7 and the CatoInstitute8have filed amicus briefs supporting the idea that an unreasonable arrest is unconstitutional whether the person being arrested is actually arrested or not.Progressive organizations such as the ACLU are concerned that keeping the police from being sued in failed arrests will create a lack of police accountability6. Conservative organizations such as the Cato Institute argue the Tenth Circuit Court’s ruling prevents citizens from exercising their rights8.Several governmental organizations including the National Association of Counties, U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the National Sherriff’s Association have filed a joint amicus brief arguing law enforcement cannot violate the Fourth Amendment in a failed arrest and interpreting the amendment differently would impose an unreasonable burden on law enforcement9. Both sides claim the founding fathers would support their interpretation of the amendment.

Torres v. Madrid has the potential immensely effect how the Fourth Amendment is interpreted. If the Supreme Court agrees with Torres, then people who escape from an unreasonable arrest will be able to sue the officers who tried to arrest them. If the Court agrees with the officers, then law enforcement will be immune from Fourth Amendment lawsuits in failed arrests. It is possible the Court will not rule on the case at all. The Supreme Court may send the case back to the Tenth Circuit with instructions to pay attention to details the Tenth Circuit may not have considered. However, if the Supreme Court does rule on the case, it is very likely to make an important difference to constitutional law. With the case set to be argued on October 14, 2020, all parties can brace for the critical oral arguments that could convince the Court Justices to alter constitutional law. A case arising from mistaken identity may well change how the Fourth Amendment is interpreted.

Hatefully Yours by Roxanne Tully My rating: 5 of 5 stars Thank you to the author and Midnight Readers Book Promotion group for allowing me the priviledge of reading this ARC. These opinions are my own. Hatefully Yours is a Hockey romance, and a really darn good one at that! It had all the vibes of "Icebreaker" by Hannah Grace and the 1992 movie "The Cutting Edge" (which I absolutely adore both). This book two in "The Blades of Hearts" series. It is my first introduction to this offer. The books are interconnected standalones and can be read in any order. Tropes: - enemies to lovers -old enemies -banter -secret crush -medium burn -angst -injury -matchmaking gone wrong -playboy -HEA -hockey player mmc -figure skater fmc -grumpy/grumpier Our FMC Angel has fears about getting back onto the ice after an accident that left her with a gnarly scar. She was an olympic figure skater and member of the Buffalo Blades Ice Girls. She decides to start skating by herself in the empty stadium so that no one can watch her fumble while she struggles. Jace just so happens to have the same idea about secretly getting onto the ice to work his injured shoulder. These two are enemies and things don't go over well at first. They eventually strike a deal where Jace helps Angel with her confidence and she helps him win over one of the ice girls. Jace really isn't into the girl but reluctantly agrees because Angel thinks that he likes her former cheerleader team mate. Jace actually has always liked Angel, but since she's the coach's daughter and coach is not the biggest fan of Jace, he has alway stayed away. Jace's shoulder gets worse and he ends up spilling the beans to Angel about what is going on. She helps him with his injury with remedies she's learned from her eccentric skating instructor. Angel's mojo comes back but Jace's secret gets out and gets back to the coach, which is not good because its a contract year for Jace. Jace and Angel have a falling out right (he blames her) when they were really starting to fall for each other. Things get resolved eventually, because this is an HEA. How? Do you ask. Well you're just going to have to read it to find out! I loved the angst, sexual tension, and hate/lust filled banter. Angel is sooooo sassy and Jace just sassed her right back. I am a sucker for enemies to lovers. I am definitely going to pick up book one in this series to get caught up with the rest of the characters, and I would love to see a third book between Angel's best friend and coach. ;) View all my reviews
