2022: Oklahoma State Capitol 1
In February of 2022 I represented my university at Higher Education Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol. This is the first of two spreads commemorating that day. I chose brown themes for this spread based on the colors of the grass at the time, the color of the wall in the right-side picture, and the colors in the Seal of the State of Oklahoma. I used Cricut Design Space and my Cricut machine to…

“Estelle [Bennett] told a guard who she was. ‘I don’t care who you are,’ he answered, ‘you’re not getting past this point.’ Luckily, Brian Epstein, The Beatles’ manager, happened to come by. He spotted Estelle and both of us were permitted to pass the blockade and were ushered into a large, comfortable suit. Paul, George, John and Ringo were scattered around the room as if blown there by a cyclone. George saw Estelle and flew over to her.” - Steve Brandt (journalist), Photoplay, June 1964 “They had a little record player [at the hotel] and stacks of records, lots of R&B stuff. We were all just a couple of kids enjoying ourselves.” - Ronnie Spector, The Beatles Invasion (2013) “That night John and George picked up Estelle and me in a limousine for a feast of ribs and chicken at Sherman’s Barbecue on 151st and Amsterdam in Harlem. And they loved it. Sherman’s is just a little takeout counter today, but back in 1964 it was beautiful, with lots of tables and a great big jukebox in back. But for the Beatles, the best part of all was that they could eat in peace. They may have been mobbed at the Plaza, but very few of their fans followed them into Harlem. In fact, the Beatles were no big deal up in Harlem. The people at Sherman’s were not exactly Murray the K’s crowd. They took one look at these guys with their long hair and funny clothes and went back to their ribs. If anything, they might have thought the Beatles were dorks. But you can bet Sherman never forgot that day. Every so often I still go into Sherman’s for takeout, and whenever I do, Sherman comes out from the kitchen to say hello. ‘I remember you!’ he always says. ‘You’re the little girl that brought the Beatles!’” - Ronnie Spector, Be My Baby (1990) Also in this photo — Murray the K… “I’ve often wondered how Murray could barge into the room and hang out with us for the entire trip. It’s funny, really, I never quite understood how he did that.” - George Harrison, The Beatles Anthology (x) More about February 8, 1964 in an older post.

A Rare George Harrison Song.
Tumblr media
It was recorded in 1971 by singer Ronnie (Veronica) Spector, but what happened to the song next is a big mystery!
Tumblr media
Ronnie Spector in 1971.
Ronnie Spector was a member of the American girl group of the 60s The Ronettes and since 1968 the wife of legendary producer Phil Spector.
The Beatles and the Ronettes met back in January 1964 at a party in London. Ronnie even told me that George Harrison had a date with her sister Estrella.
Tumblr media
And she herself met John Lennon twice, though once with her mother, because John jokingly invited her too!
During the Beatles' first American tour, the two bands met again and went to a nightclub together.
In the same year, Phil Spector produced the single "Ringo, I Love You" by singer Bonnie Jo Mason, better known as Cher.
youtube
The Ronettes were the opening act for the Beatles during their last tour in '66, where Phil Spector wouldn't let Ronnie in (because of her relationship with John). In general, the ties between the Beatles and the Ronettes were long-standing.
In the early 70s, Spector participated in many Beatles projects: he produced the band's album Let It Be, solo works by John and George.
So he came up with the idea that in response, with the help of the Beatles and especially their new company Apple, his wife could start a new round of her career.
Tumblr media
Phil Spector with John in 1971.
And in February 1971 Veronica flew to London to record her album. The Abbey Road studio and the musicians who worked with George on his masterpiece All Things Must Pass, as well as songs specially written by Harrison, were waiting for her. It seemed that success was assured for her.
There was also Try Some Buy Some. Ronnie wrote it down (George was playing guitar). And three years later, George himself did it, thanks to which modern masters created their virtual duo.
youtube
In addition, there was a Tandoori Chicken song. George was playing the guitar again, and Lennon liked it so much that he even sings along to it.
youtube
But Ronnie herself did not share their enthusiasm! She complained that she didn't understand a word about Try Some Buy Some, and Tandoori Chicken was even stranger to her. Therefore, of the entire project, only two of these songs were released as a single, and the idea of an album had to be abandoned.

Phil Spector and George Harrison, 1971
But it is known that another Harrison song was recorded at those sessions/A spector with the name Loverly Laddy Day, George played guitar on it, John could sing along, and Ringo most likely drummed! There is information about this in the studio documents. But no one has ever heard the song itself. It remains to this day George's most mysterious and rare work.
It would be just wonderful if one day it surfaced during the next bonus reissue of George's CDs of that time. It doesn't matter if she's good or not, but it's interesting to hear her.

“[In the early ‘70s] George decided one night that he’d like to take a ride on a New York City subway. He was dressed in his denims and wore a longish beard. Still, he looked like nobody else. We descended the Sheridan Square subway steps, bought our tokens and waited patiently on the platform. We got on the next uptown train with only a few other passengers in the car. Immediately, George drew stares on our trip as the train headed uptown. Otherwise the trip was largely uneventful until we exited the train one stop to the North at 14th Street. At that very moment, a gang of cops with drawn guns was chasing someone up the platform. I think that was George's first and last ride on a New York City subway.” - Al Aronowitz, The Blacklisted Journalist, 2001
“I think they should pull a lot of it down and plant some trees in it. [laughs] I don’t think it’s very healthy at all. It’s crumbling, it's tired, but it still has a kind of atmosphere. In the '60s and '70s for me, it was kind of interesting when we used to hang out, we used to go in weird places. Then there's that kind of thing where you can get into feelin’, ‘Hey, man, yeah, we're in the city and this is city life and we're cool.’ But for me, I have no desire to be in any city, even a small city. I don’t like cities. I want to be as close to nature as possible. Purely just because I want to survive and I think it takes its toll on you — the pollution, the noise, the uptightness, the hostility — and all it does is it fries your nervous system and knocks years off your life.” - George Harrison (on what he thinks of New York City in 1992), The Blacklisted Journalist, published 2001 (x)
