Thank You for Smoking essay. by Everett Hunt
The film that I will be covering is "Thank You for Smoking" 2006. This film impacted me because it was one of the first satirical comedies that I had seen on a topic like the advertising of smoking and led me to watch many similar satirical movies like "The Wolf of Wall Street". The movie was certainly a commercial success, making $39,323,027 with a budget of only $6,500,000. One of the things that the producers relied upon in order to get a return on investment was the use of big actors such as J.K. Simmons, David Koechner, and Willium H Macy. It was also based on a famous book of the same name. One of the possible limiting factors of the movie would be that the topics covered in the movie are definitely targeted towards a mature audience, with death due to smoking being one of the main themes of the movie. The reviews of this movie have stayed relatively consistent since the release of the movie, being overwhelmingly positive. Roger Ebert's review of the movie when it first came out was very positive stating ""Thank You for Smoking" targets the pro-smoking lobby with a dark appreciation of human nature". A more recent review by Metacritic states "This movie is satire done right. It manages to pull all the strings to break conventions on how we see corporations and activists to add a nuance we (intentionally or not) erase from other human". Rewatching this movie this week, I definitely had a much different perspective due to having much more knowledge of all of the things covered. This movie is definitely a conventional film. There were many famous actors involved, a large budget, and the topic being covered, although not inoffensive, was one that was widely accepted and not particularly something that would limit the audience by anything other than age.
The energy that this film brings to the table is excellently portrayed in the opening scene to the film where the main character explains what he does for a living and proceeds to go into an interview where he comedically turns it around on the opposition even though he is clearly in the wrong.
In Roger Ebert's review of the movie, he gives an excellent summary that goes as follows: "Nick Naylor is a pleasant, good-looking career lobbyist who is divorced, loves his son Joey (Cameron Bright) and speaks to the kid's class on career day. "Please don't ruin my childhood," Joey pleads, but his dad cross-examines a little girl whose mother says cigarettes can kill you: "Is your mother a doctor?" Once a week he dines with the MOD Squad, whose other members are alcohol lobbyist Polly Bailey (Maria Bello) and firearms lobbyist Bobby Jay Bliss (David Koechner). They argue over which of their products kills the most people. The initials MOD stand for "Merchants of Death.""
This movie was also significant due to all of the smoking bans that were being put into place at the time of the film's release. "Throughout the early to mid-2000s, especially between 2004 and 2007, an increasing number of states enacted a statewide smoking ban of some kind" This caused the film not only to be even more funny, but also to be a culturally significant film, raising awareness of the dangers of smoking, and helping people to recognize many of the backhanded advertising techniques used by cigarette companies.
List of smoking bans in the United States as of 2008
Tumblr media
Overall, I think that this was an excellent movie in many ways. It was extremely funny, had a cultural significant message about the big tobacco industry, and increased awareness about some real issues that were contentious at the time. This movie still holds up over fifteen years later and I enjoyed watching it this time just as much as I did the first time.

[ad_1] TORONTO – Canadian Bo Naylor and the Cleveland Guardians gave the slumping Toronto Blue Jays a lesson in producing runs in the series opener on Friday. Naylor, Ramon Laureano and Andres Gimenez each smashed homers in the Guardians 5-2 win as the Blue Jays (70-59) lost for the third time in a row before 40,755 at Rogers Centre. With Toronto ahead 1-0 after George Springer’s lead-off homer to right field in the second inning, Naylor, a 23-year-old rookie catcher from Mississauga, ON, tied the game with a one-out blast in the third inning for his fifth that landed in a similar spot as Springer’s in the Guardians (61-68) bullpen.“All the things, working up to this moment, have made it super special, having the people I love dearest closest to me here. And to add a win on top of that, it’s a great night,” said Naylor, who had several family members and friends in attendance. Story continues below advertisement It wasn’t a dreadful night for the Blue Jays at the plate. They only mustered six hits and have produced just five runs in their three-game losing streak as Toronto remains 1 1/5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League. We just got to get it done.” Laureano smacked a two-run shot to right-centre field with two out in the fourth inning after Oscar Gonzalez reached base on an infield hit.The centrefielder increased Cleveland’s lead to 4-1 with a one-out double down the right-field line to cash in Gonzalez, who started a sixth-inning rally with a double.Gimenez hit his homer in the eighth inning after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked his team-leading 19th in the sixth to bring Toronto within 4-2.Four of Cleveland’s runs came off Bassitt. He lasted 5 and 2/3 innings with seven hits, five strikeouts and two walks, including an intentional walk to Jose Ramirez in the fifth inning. Story continues below advertisement “I felt fine,” Bassitt said. “I just felt like a pitched terrible.”Guardians 24-year-old rookie righty Tanner Bibee (10-3) went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in six innings. After Guerrero’s homer, the following seven Blue Jays batters went down in order.Guerrero also was thrown out in the fourth inning, trying to score from first to third on Matt Chapman’s double to left. Shortstop Gabriel Arias’s relay from Steven Kwan to Naylor nipped Guerrero at the plate.“When you have a tough time stringing a lot of runs together, you’re aggressive,” Toronto manager John Schneider said. “There was a good read off the bat. It was a hell of a throw by the shortstop, but that was about as well executed the way we did it.“[Third-base coach Luis] Rivera was spot on. The Saint: The Work of Art (2.7, ITC, 1963)
"MĂšre Lafond, I think it might be wiser if we were to co-operate."

Twins Hold On To Beat Indians!
Indians 7 Twins 8 W-Jax (1-0) L-Wittgren (2-2) SV-Robles (7)
The Minnesota Twins had a couple former friends beat them last night as Eddie Rosario delivered a two-run single late and Blake Parker picked up the win. Tonight, the two teams got back to work as the Twins looked to even up the series. The Indians got on the board first as Amed Rosario crushed a Danny Coulombe fastball out to left for a solo homer. Later in the inning, Eddie Rosario reached on an infield single and Bobby Bradley smacked a Danny Coulombe slider out to center for a two-run homer. The Indians had a three-run lead, but the Twins would answer in the bottom of the first. Luis Arraez led-off with a sun triple to right and Josh Donaldson hit a sac fly down the left field line. This pulled the Twins within a pair of runs after an inning of play. The Twins got back to work in the third as Nick Gordon led-off with a double to center. He was thrown out at third base on a fielder’s choice, but Andrelton Simmons reached first base. The next batter, Luis Arraez hit a ball to the left-center field gap. Harold Ramirez kicked the ball for another triple and Simmons scored. Josh Donaldson followed with a run-scoring single to center and the game was tied at three. Alex Kirilloff crushed a Cal Quantrill change-up out to left-center for a two-run homer. This put the Twins up 5-3 after three frames. The Indians wouldn’t go away in the fourth as Bobby Bradley walked and Harold Ramirez singled to left. Josh Naylor drew a walk to load up the bases and Austin Hedges plated a pair with a base hit to left. This tied the game back up at five apiece. Eddie Rosario put the Indians back up in the fifth inning when he drilled a Griffin Jax fastball out to right for a solo homer. This put Cleveland up 6-5, but it didn’t last long. The Twins got back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Andrelton Simmons led-off with a single to left and Josh Donaldson walked. Nelson Cruz delivered a two-out single to left, which scored Simmons and tied the game up at six after five innings of play. The see-saw battle continued in the sixth. Nick Gordon kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center and Andrelton Simmons lined a base hit to right. Luis Arraez plated a pair with a double to left and the Twins took a two-run lead. Alex Colome threw a perfect seventh and Taylor Rogers had a 1-2-3 eighth. Hansel Robles came on for the ninth and things got interesting. Josh Naylor smoked a Robles change-up out to right for a solo homer. The Indians were within a run with two outs left. Max Kepler gunned down Bradley Zimmer out at second base for out number two. Austin Hedges grounded out to short to end the game and the Twins held on for the win tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Danny Coulombe got roughed up in his opener outing. He went 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Griffin Jax did an okay job as the main guy. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts for his first MLB win. Alex Colome had a perfect seventh, Taylor Rogers had a 1-2-3 eighth, and Hansel Robles gave up a run, but got the save in the ninth. Luis Arraez led the way with three hits tonight. Nick Gordon and Andrelton Simmons had two hits each. The Twins hit 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Mitch Garver is resuming baseball activities and will either begin a rehab assignment next weekend or catch bullpens by then. Tomorrow, Sam Hentges faces Kenta Maeda in Game 3.

EULOGY FOR JONATHAN GOLD
(a cut-up poem taken from his restaurant reviews)

You may belong to L.A.’s great brotherhood of taco eaters huddled around trucks late at night. You munch still-muddy radishes to sweeten your breath, but the stink of onions and garlic and cilantro and pig flesh haunt you like a friendly ghost for days. When we’re hungry, everything tastes good Hunger is the best spice.
Pico was where I learned to eat I saw my first punk-rock show on Pico was shot at, fell in love, witnessed a knife fight, took cello lessons, raised chickens, ate Oki Dogs and heard X, Ice Cube, and Willie Dixon perform (though not together) on Pico.
When this dining room was Tiny Naylor's my mom used to take us here for patty melts when she didn’t feel flush enough to spring for the onion rings across the street. You could drive by the restaurant 300 times without ever being tempted to stop.
You dump your Lexus off with the valet, march down a breezeway. It looks like the path to Thunder Mountain at Disneyland You walk past a watery ditch lined with shattered rock whose cracks ooze green light. You are led to an elevator in the rust-colored steel structure.
If you spend much time watching period Asian movies, you will remember scenes of dark inns, a crew of women tending an ancient grill, prodding battered cookpots licked with yellow flame. Their interiors resonate with dark wood and leather, stone and iron, surfaces oozing water and flame. Like the fifth level of any first-person shooter. You never know quite whether to order a Dirty Martini or to search the ground for a pulsing golden key.
It is time to go down into the dining room. The minimalist soundtrack, which sounds like the part where the icebergs float by in a National Geographic film. If you try to muscle your way toward a seat that may not officially belong to you, a stooped Chinese woman will cut you off at the knees.
A waitress will try to sell you a third or fourth martini. The skull of Simon Le Bon splats on your forehead. His brains trickle down your cheek like warm yolk. I wave toward the canapé, telling him that I had always considered truffle oil to be the Heinz ketchup of the overbred. Traditional dishes are more austere than what used to be served, possibly because of the seediness radiating from the adult-video store next door .
Ghost-white Kobe beef grilled to a crisp-edged liquid succulence. A foil-wrapped construction the size and girth of your forearm drapes over a paper plate like a giant oozing sea cucumber. The bare hint of sweaty afternoon sex in the scent of a juicy midsummer melon. This is the first of many flowers you will see tonight. You will recognize none of them.
What will happen is that your date will suck up the last of his or her Jolly Roger Bowl and carve your initials in the booth. You hear the occasional lonely moan of a train whistle from the tracks that run a few blocks south of here. It seems exactly right. As if you are eating your lunch at some railroad-station restaurant a hundred miles in the countryside.
And it is hard to avoid feeling that everything is pretty all right in the world.
