Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996)
Tumblr media
If you've followed Aladdin, Jasmine and their friends throughout their many adventures over the course of the two previous films and the animated television series, Aladdin and the King of Thieves is a satisfying conclusion to their story.
The day has finally come. Aladdin (voiced by Scott Weinger) and Princess Jasmine (voiced by Linda Larkin) are getting married. The ceremony has drawn hundreds of guests, including the legendary forty thieves, and their King (John Rhys-Davies) who want a scepter the couple are receiving as a wedding gift. With it, the thieves can find the most precious treasure of all, the hand of Midas. Discovering the King of Thieves is his father, Aladdin goes off in their pursuit.
If a film serves as the conclusion to a television series, it’s got to have something new, production values that are at least as good as the show’s, some kind of epic story and a lasting impact on the series. The King of Thieves fills all of these criteria. Robin Williams is back to voice the Genie, all of the other characters you’ve come to love are also present and with Aladdin’s father Cassim, we have a big addition to the franchise. The army of thieves and hand of Midas makes the story feel epic. It’s got exotic locations, exciting action scenes, and a pretty solid climax. The ending is particularly well handled, with some unexpected character development for Iago (still voiced by Gilbert Gottfried).
Inspired from Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, there are some nice bits of creativity with the Middle Eastern/Chinese story crossing over with Greek mythology - and not just something obvious like a minotaur or gorgon. While Aladdin 3 isn't on par with the original, Robin William's return elevates the humor. Dan Castellaneta (who provided the voice for the second film and the television series) was ok, but it wasn’t the same with Robin Williams. Keep an eye out for a great sequence in which Jasmine and Genie are trying on different outfits and the princess ends up in all kinds of costumes... including Snow White and Jessica Rabbit!
Throughout, there are some nice thrills, a few instances of actual character development and a smidge of heart too. With that said, this is still just a direct-to-video release, and it shows. The animation isn’t great, the songs are forgettable and I noticed more than a couple of animation errors. The cast feels bloated, with Princess Jasmine again having little to contribute to the story. If only they'd put a spotlight on her instead of always going back to the Genie. He's fine in small doses, particularly when his gags are broken up with other, bigger plots but you get a real "Beetlejuice 2" feeling of this film. By this, I mean that if you’ve seen Beetlejuice, you know that Michael Keaton’s character steals the show whenever he’s on-screen... but he's not main character material. A sequel which would focus increasingly on him may be what the fans would want but would prove to be a mistake. Genie overstays his welcome here in more than a few scenes.
Those who want to see Aladdin and the King of Thieves will be happy with it. For what it is, it satisfied. Will you ultimately remember and cherish it like the original? No, but you won’t want your time back either. I'd categorize my viewing of Aladdin and the King of Thieves as a nice nostalgic goodbye. As a special treat, there are some fun gags during the end credits, so stick around for those. (On DVD, July 19, 2015)

Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996)
Walt Disney Home Video
Impression: better than the second one, but still... missing something. And the guard overstepping his boundaries... listening to one of the thieves over Aladdin who has saved the kingdom twice...
Collection: no
Overall: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Concept: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Story: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Storytelling: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ish
Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Casting: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Visually: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Score/Soundtrack: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Entertainment: ⭐️⭐️1/2
Best: Robin Williams is back as the Genie!
Worst: the guard ... he oversteps... its just so.... trying to make drama to find a story. There were many ways for the 40 Thieves/Aladdin’s father storyline to go without bringing the guard into it. And seriously... Aladdin helped save the kingdom twice, why would anyone in the kingdom, let alone head of the king’s guard, have anything against him.

Disney Shares First Look at Live-Action Kim Possible
Disney Shares First Look at Live-Action Kim Possible
Kim Possible is coming back! This time though, instead of being animated she will be live-action. Last week at San Diego Comic-Con, Disney released the first look at Sadie Stanley as Kim Possible. She is part of a remake of the hit Disney Channel show into a live-action movie. The original animated show was created by Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley. This duo also wrote the script for the…

"Measurements now show that intense coughs and sneezes that propel larger droplets more than 20 ft can also create thousands of aerosols that can travel even further (1). Increasing evidence for SARS-CoV-2 suggests the 6 ft WHO recommendation is likely not enough under many indoor conditions where aerosols can remain airborne for hours, accumulate over time, and follow air flows over distances further than 6 ft."
"Given how little is known about the production and airborne behavior of infectious respiratory droplets, it is difficult to define a safe distance for social distancing."
"From epidemiological data, countries that have been most effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19 have implemented universal masking, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea. In the battle against COVID-19, Taiwan (population 24 million, first COVID-19 case 21 January 2020) did not implement a lockdown during the pandemic, yet maintained a low incidence of 441 cases and 7 deaths (as of 21 May 2020). By contrast, the state of New York (population ~20 million, first COVID case 1 March 2020), had a higher number of cases (353,000) and deaths (24,000). By quickly activating its epidemic response plan that was established after the SARS outbreak, the Taiwanese government enacted a set of proactive measures that successfully prevented the spread of SARS-CoV-2, including setting up a central epidemic command center in January, using technologies to detect and track infected patients and their close contacts, and perhaps most importantly, requesting people to wear masks in public places."

What If...? (Big Hero 6 Edition)
So the next Marvel series set to release is What If...?, a series of nine episodes that will focus on alternate events and timelines that occur within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The series, based off of the comic series of the same name, will premiere on August 11th, running straight through October 6th. The show was suppose to have ten episodes in both Season 1 and 2 (which is already being worked on), but producer Brad Winderbaum mentions in an interview that they had to push an episode back because of, you guessed it, the pandemic:
"We had to push an episode into Season 2. It was just, honestly, like everything else, that was a COVID impact," Winderbaum told Collider. "There was an episode that just wouldn't hit the completion date, but luckily we do get to see it in the second season of the show."

Judging by both the poster and the trailer, we know of a few scenarios: Peggy Carter becoming Captain America, an alternate Avengers lineup battling at New York, Black Panther as Star Lord, Marvel Zombies (of course there’s zombies), and Spider-Man as the Sorcerer Supreme.  Inverse has an article breaking all of the possibilities down.
A lot of the actors who portray their characters in live action will reprise their roles for the animated series, including the late Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther/Star Lord.  Star...Panther?  Black Lord? That last one sounds wrong. Among those not coming back are Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and Dave Bautista as Drax.  Bautista was, according to the man himself, wasn’t even asked to come back to voice Drax.  Others include Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, James Spader as Ultron, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Elizabeth Olson as the Scarlet Witch, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Gweneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and various members of the Dora Milaje.  They have all apparently been confirmed to be appearing in What If...? in some form or another, but voiced by different people.
It will certainly be an interesting show, but I hope you can see where I’m going with this.
The Big Hero 6 fanbase has a lot of burning questions for the show and movie, and it’s not all just unanswered ones about what happens after the show ended.  I think collectively there are a few common “what-ifs” that we have in our minds about the team.  I think the most obvious one involves one of the Hamada brothers, and that branches off into other what-ifs as well.
Granted, not all of these are reality-altering hypotheticals like there are in the show or comics, but they can still change the course of the movie or show in a huge way.
Tumblr media
1.) What if...Tadashi had survived the fire?
Tadashi being a survivor of the fire that takes down the exhibition hall brings up a few interesting conundrums.  Would he be scarred for life?  Would he even be able to complete school?
And if Hiro still made the team, would he end up becoming Sunfire like a lot of fans theorize?
Tumblr media
The thing is that Callaghan knows that Tadashi died in the fire.  If he knew that he didn’t, would that change his motivations?  Would he still be using the Microbots knowing that the person that was trying to “stop” him was still alive? Alternatively, you also have...
Tumblr media
2.) What if...Hiro had died instead of Tadashi?
Hiro was probably about two seconds away from being fully engulfed in that giant fireball.  It’s entirely plausible that he (or possibly both Hamadas) could have perished in the fire instead of his brother, which sort of leads to the same circumstances as the first question, just with different powersets.  Tadashi would no longer be tied to fire-based powers but the magnetic equipment that that Hiro currently uses.
But one has to think about whether Tadashi would be in the right state of mind to be a hero long term.  Seeing his kid brother perish in the accident would probably cause him to go insane, and perhaps the rest of the team would have to reel him in.
Tumblr media
3.) What if...Baymax had killed Callaghan?
It’s worth noting that if Honey Lemon had been about three seconds later on getting the healthcare chip back into Baymax, this wouldn’t have been a “What If?” question.
And sure, the team would have saved the day, but at what cost?  The permanent scarring of a fourteen-year-old?  And what would have come of the major revelations after that fight concerning Project Silent Sparrow and Abigail?
Tumblr media
Maybe they would have been the ones to build the portal to the other dimension to try to save her.  That would similar to what happened in the original manga (where Tadashi actually helps with the construction of the original portal and got sucked in as a result). 4.) What if...Baymax had saved Obake in “Countdown to Catastrophe”?
Tumblr media
Obake dismissed Baymax after his hideout started collapsing near the end of Part 2, and you could tell that Baymax was seriously considering rescuing him before leaving him in his chair amongst the rubble.  Ultimately, however, he did leave him behind after Obake’s insistence.
Imagine what would have happened if he had gone against his programming and saved his life.
Tumblr media
The relieved group hug on the beach would have been replaced with a disheveled (and probably a little damp) Obake.  Hiro would have been staring hiim down in disbelief.  Perhaps there would even be another fight, or at least the makings of one.
And then Obake would give himself up for arrest.
Maybe that’s where Chief Cruz could have been introduced.  It would have given a good lead into the next season, and it would give Megan’s meeting with Hiro in Season 2 a little bit more meaning.
And finally, because I’m a shipper and we have to go there:
Tumblr media
5.) What if...Karmi had never left SFIT at the end of “City of Monsters”?
We know from the boards that Bob Schooley posted that “City of Monsters” was originally going to end very differently than what actually made the final cut.  It seemed that Karmi, in addition to getting a nonsensical boyfriend named “Flammarion”, was not suppose to leave SFIT in the early draft.
So what if Hiro had shown up to her lab, and instead of seeing this...
Tumblr media
He saw this?
Tumblr media
Or...something a little less dramatic?  Maybe just her packing up stuff because she’s in the process of leaving?  And Hiro had to say something in order for her to stop what she was doing? And how exactly would you achieve that? See, if that scenario happened, I think that this particular point would be where Hiro told her about being in Big Hero 6.  And of course Karmi wouldn’t believe him, even though she’s now in love with him crushing on him.
Then, he takes her to the base.
And she turns back to him with an incredulous look.
And roll credits.  What a cliffhanger to go into Season 3 with. I vaguely remember fanart depicting that exact scene (Hiro taking Karmi to the base), but I don’t remember who did it.  I would like to give them the proper credit. Season 3 would have looked totally different if that took place.  Maybe it would have been an actual season and not a bunch of mini stories.  Also...perhaps Karmi would have joined the team proper.
And maybe we would have finally had a giant canonical Karmiro moment.
...Now that is a big “What if?”.
(Marvel’s What If...? premieres on Wednesday, August 11th on Disney+.)

The Return of Jafar (1994)
Tumblr media
As far as the direct-to-video sequels produced by the Walt Disney Company, you could do a lot worse than The Return of Jafar. I’m not saying it’s great but it’s enjoyable and I have to give it props for actually being a genuine sequel.
After parrot Iago (Gilbert Gottfried) escapes from Jafar’s genie lamp, he returns to the Sultan's palace in the hopes of finding a home there. His arrival brings turmoil to the blissful life of Aladdin (Scott Weinger), Princess Jasmine (Linda Larkin), Abu (Frank Welker) and the Genie, newly returned from his trip through time and space (voiced this time by Dan Castellaneta), who are unsure if Iago can be trusted despite his hatred of his former master. The talking bird is the least of their worries, however, as Jafar (Jonathan Freeman), now an all-powerful genie allies himself with a brigand named Abis Mal (Jason Alexander) who seeks revenge on Aladdin.
I have to give credit to The Return of Jafar for being an actual sequel featuring an original story. Little Mermaid 2 and Lady and the Tramp 2 are essentially tweaked versions of the original stories. Cinderella 2 and Tarzan 2 are generic, cookie-cutter TV episodes tied together to make an anthology sequel. By comparison, this is a major success. We get to see the characters from the first movie confront each other again, but in a different way now. No longer is the audience wondering if Aladdin and Jasmine will fall in love, they’re a couple now and the film is about seeing their relationship play out. This is how you do it.
Everything that you liked about Aladdin is preserved - more or less. The Genie and his wacky antics are back, Abu is still a kleptomaniac, the songs are bouncy and energetic. There are some good moments of humor with the animal sidekicks and Jafar proves himself a worthy foe once again. With his genie powers and menacing look, he might even be more formidable than before. Seeing him twisting the words of those around him to give them terrible (and nearly lethal) wishes instills a nice sense of menace.
Before I get into my criticisms, I want to clarify something. If you're nostalgic for it, for the TV series it spanned or you want a little more Aladdin but don't want to hear  A Whole New World for the 500th time, see this film. It’s not on the same level as the first movie, but this wasn’t released theatrically and at just over an hour long, it doesn’t waste any of your time.
The biggest flaw with The Return of the Jafar comes from the comparisons it receives following Aladdin. The songs are fine but nothing you’ll remember once the film is over either. The story is interesting but doesn't utilize Princess Jasmine well. She never confronts Jafar or contributes to the story in any meaningful way. It doesn’t feel like an intentional choice as much as a necessary one looking at the budget of a straight to home video release. More breathing room for the Genie would've also been beneficial. The animation is fine overall but inconsistent. Iago changes size drastically not only from scene-to-scene but from shot to shot and there's either a scene missing or a big continuity error concerning Aladdin and his royal palace regalia disappearing to be replaced by his "classic" street rat attire between shots.
Had The Return of Jafar made it to theaters as is, it would've been a disappointment. Looking at it as a straight-to-VHS sequel, however, it's fine. I wouldn't rush out to add it to your collection, however. Buy it used or rent it. (On Dvd, July 14, 2015)

𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓦𝓲𝓵𝓵 𝓘𝓽 𝓣𝓪𝓴𝓮 𝓽𝓸 𝓦𝓲𝓹𝓮 𝓞𝓾𝓽 𝓢𝓾𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓫𝓾𝓰𝓼?
Tumblr media
More than 10 million people a year could die from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, warns a United Nations report. Yet scientists hope that recent advances — from reviving ancient cures to enlisting bacteria-slaying viruses — could prevent that dire prediction.
By the time Tom Patterson, PhD, was medically evacuated from Egypt to Germany after falling ill on vacation, his condition was rapidly deteriorating. Patterson, 68, had become infected with Acinetobacter baumannii, one of the most antibiotic-resistant superbugs known to science. None of the antibiotics German doctors tried could contain the spreading infection. Patterson was finally transported to the University of California, San Diego, (UC San Diego) hospital, where the infection spread to his bloodstream and he lapsed into a coma. Doctors there told his family that he was almost certainly going to die.
Tumblr media
Bacteria like Acinetobacter baumannii, resistant to almost every antibiotic in the pharmacological arsenal, are on the rise. To prevent that nightmare from becoming reality, researchers are scrambling to develop new antimicrobials and enhance the power of those we have.
In a case that may mark a turning point in medicine, Tom Patterson didn’t die from his raging infection.
Tumblr media
As her husband’s condition grew dire, Steffanie Strathdee, PhD, an infectious disease epidemiologist at UC San Diego, began frantically searching the medical literature for something, anything, that could save him. That’s when she came across an approach that had been used with some success in the 1920s and 30s but had basically been abandoned after penicillin was discovered: using viruses that prey on bacteria, called bacteriophages, to cure bacterial infections.
Working with Robert Schooley, MD, Patterson’s physician and an infectious disease expert at UC San Diego Health, Strathdee connected with scientists at two institutions engaged in phage research: Texas A&M and the Naval Medical Research Center. Isolates of the superbug running rampant in her husband’s body were sent to both institutions. There, researchers identified eight phage variants that were likely to be active against his infection. Once the hospital and the Food and Drug Administration provided approvals, Schooley administered the experimental phage cocktail.
Tumblr media
“Three days later Tom woke up,” recalls Strathdee, who went on to co-write a book with her husband about their ordeal, called The Perfect Predator: A Scientist’s Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug. “Within a week or two, he was off all life support.”
For nearly a century, bacteria-fighting drugs known as antibiotics have helped to control and destroy many of the harmful bacteria that can make us sick. But in recent decades, antibiotics have been losing their punch against some types of bacteria. In fact, certain bacteria are now unbeatable with today’s medicines. Sadly, the way we’ve been using antibiotics is helping to create new drug-resistant “superbugs.”
Tumblr media
Superbugs are strains of bacteria that are resistant to several types of antibiotics. Each year these drug-resistant bacteria infect more than 2 million people nationwide and kill at least 23,000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis, gonorrhea, and staph infections are just a few of the dangers we now face.
Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs for people. They’re also given to livestock to prevent disease and promote growth. Antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, such as strep throat and some types of pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, and ear infections. But these drugs don’t work at all against viruses, such as those that cause colds or flu.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, many antibiotics prescribed to people and to animals are unnecessary. And the overuse and misuse of antibiotics helps to create drug-resistant bacteria.
The fight against resistance does not only mean searching for new antibiotic molecules or classes of drugs from scratch: researchers have also been looking at possible ways to restore the efficacy of existing drugs.
Dr Oksana Bilyk, of Manchester Institute of Biotechnology in the UK, sees the potential for researchers to add chemical groups with useful properties to current antibiotics, which could be of use in overcoming antimicrobial resistance.
Dr Bilyk and her colleagues bioengineered bacteria to make new enzyme-based building blocks to incorporate into antibiotics.
Tumblr media
‘Depending on the building blocks used, it may change the properties of the compound (such as an antibiotic),’ she said. Physical, chemical or biological properties may be affected, and could, for example, improve solubility of an antibiotic, she says.
That holds out the prospect of modifying an antibiotic’s chemical makeup sufficiently to overcome resistance, while maintaining its impact against a pathogen.
New weapons are needed to fight drug-resistant bacteria, one of the biggest threats to global health. By working on new antibiotics or finding ways to revive existing ones in our medical arsenal, scientists aim to avoid a return to a world where even everyday infections may mean death.
