Have A Feel Of Sam Obrist's 'River Rising' Album Diving into the world of independent music, Sam Obrist's latest creation, "River Rising," is an eloquent experience that leaves an indelible mark. Released on a serene Friday in August, this album emerges from the depths of winter and spring, a concoction of emotions poured into a musical canvas. Obrist's artistic exploration took root in his Bed-Stuy apartment, Brooklyn, a place that seemingly infused its essence into the very fabric of his music. With a modest track count of seven, "River Rising" embarks on an enchanting odyssey, guided by intricately woven melodies and poignant verses. Obrist masterfully unravels his vulnerabilities and muses on themes of intimacy and growth, painting lyrical landscapes that resonate with the longing to break free from the enigma that surrounds us all. Obrist's nimble fingers dance across his acoustic guitar, a loyal companion that leads us through his narrative. The album also showcases his versatility as he deftly handles instruments like bass and keys, harmonizing them under his captivating vocals that take the center stage. In this artistic endeavor, Obrist's touch is felt across every facet, excluding the percussive heartbeat that is entrusted to the talented Marcus Dembinski. While Obrist took charge of the album's production and most of the mixing, the collaboration with producer Ryan Mackstaller added the final brushstrokes, refining the intricacies of sound in both mixing and mastering. Sam Obrist's musical expedition finds its roots in Syracuse, NY, and blooms vibrantly in the heart of New York City. Having been entwined with the Brooklyn and East Village music scene, Obrist has cultivated his craft through local performances and open mics, nurturing connections with fellow artists who share his passion. His songwriting journey commenced at the tender age of ten, blossoming into a full-fledged artistic expression that encapsulates his personal growth, spiritual evolution, and a yearning for autonomy. "River Rising" is a culmination of these transformative experiences, encapsulating Obrist's evolution as a musician and storyteller. The album introduces us to his warmth and brilliance through tracks like 'Targets' and 'Late Bloomer,' each note a testament to his sonic maturation. The album envelops us with a radiant tapestry of sound, a breezy ambiance that mirrors the captivating essence of the rising river, guiding us through its currents of emotion. As Sam Obrist firmly establishes his presence with this debut offering, he emerges as a luminary on the musical horizon. "River Rising" is not just an album but a beacon of his artistic journey, a promise of more wonders yet to be uncovered. With every note, Obrist beckons us to accompany him on this enthralling expedition, one that promises to etch its mark on the ever-evolving landscape of indie music. Maps
Why is a map so important to a story?
I think maps are so important because the maps can tell a story and what happens in the story. The Edge Chronicles started with the map. Then Chris drew it in one of his sketchbook and the gave it too Paul. This is The Edge and Tell me what happens there. From The Deepwoods to Sanctaphrax, from Undertown to the Twilight Woods, from Riverrise to the Farrow Ridges, explore the cartography of The Edge. The Edge itself is a fictional cliff where The Edge Chronicles, a five-saga series of fantasy novels co-created by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, is set. A massive spur of rock, it juts out into Open Sky like the prow of a ship, and is divided into several distinct areas, including forests, swamps, fertile plains and barren rock-lands.
what are the Marauder's maps?
A magical document that reveals the whole of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the map includes every hallway, secret passage, and classroom. In addition, it also shows the exact location of every person within the castle and its grounds, even the ghosts.

The way she grounds him and keeps him steady? The way he’s the only one to make her feel safe in the world above ground, the only person she takes off her hood in front of? The Earth and Sky duality of it all? Their implicit willingness to put their lives in each other’s hands? The fact that after he had to leave her at Riverrise, he spent his whole life searching for her and she spent her whole life waiting for him? They invented love, I don’t make the rules
It's been like 16 years but the Twig and Maugin brainrot still resurfaces occasionally

When Twig sleeps in the Caterbird's cocoon in BTD, he dreams that he's lying in a meadow by a stream, surrounded by red flowers. Is this some kind of foreshadowing?? I haven't read these books in over a decade so I genuinely can't remember dfghffhjj
#i remember SOMEONE visits riverrise at some point and that’s the only stream i remember has any significance#but i can't remember who visits it??

Wondering if there's anyone on here that remembers The Edge Chronicles. Did anyone else read this gem of a kids series?
(Does anyone remember the Edge Drama forum and the Mass Zombeh Makeout Topic?)
I was thinking about that today as I wrote a blog post for school comparing three different book covers of Stormchaser.
I have very specific memories of being on the internet as a young teenager in 2009 digging up obscure Edge Chronicles shit to giggle at at 3am.
The Edge Chronicles had the first gay fanfiction I read and also the first smut 😂
There were 70 fics for the Edge Chronicles total on the internet at that time lol
#the edge chronicles#twig saga#the first gay fanfic i ever read was twig's crew overhearing twig and cowlquape discussing their map to riverrise#and they thought they were fucking#gay ships#the first smut i ever read was twig and maugin#which is questionable looking back#she was ten years older than him and stuck in the body of a 12 year old#he was 16#yikesss

Yeah we know what’s at the bottom of the Edge Cliff but what’s wayyy out west. Past Riverrise. What’s going on out there. Does the landmass just end somewhere or does it go on forever.
#the edge chronicles#I’ve come up with my own idea of what’s out there but it’s fully made up and not based in any kind of fact

actually i feel the need to explain the edge chronicles: the edge chronicles is a series of books set across roughly 500 years of history. the earlier books, which i'll focus on, take place at the beginning of this ~500 year period. the edge is literally a massive, floating chunk of rock which constitutes 'the earth' for the many different species living on it. it has some weird fantasy physics, including floating rocks, which are used 1) to power devices (they make sky ships float) and 2) to live on (in only one case: the great floating city of sanctaphrax). there are the leagues (who use skyships for business) and the sky pirates (who disrupt league business). on sanctaphrax live the sky scholars, who study weather changes and fight each other a lot. in undertown live the ordinary inhabitants of the edge, and in undertown's sewers live the earth librarians, who are the counterpart to sky scholars and were thrown off sanctaphrax a while before the series begins. beyond undertown there's the mire (unliveable boiling hot swamp), the twilight woods (a place where you can go insane and age but never die), the deepwoods (exactly what it says on the tin; a forest full of people and fucked up creechers), the nightwoods (like the deepwoods but even worse), and riverrise (where the river that flow through the edge begins). sanctaphrax requires stormphrax, which is solid lightning, to weight it down; stormphrax is extremely dangerous to acquire, because it gets heavier in darkness, lighter in light, and can only be obtained during storms in the twilight woods. there is lots of fighting between all these groups and poisoning is a fairly average consequence of living on sanctaphrax. there's other stuff going on but it's all very fancy and hierarchical (everyone is called shit like linius pallitax, sanctaphrax has a most high academe)
oh and this guy is an evil lightning cultist who feeds children to ravine monsters

JUPITER CAN FIT WHERE
Oh bestie...
Now, this admittedly is going off of the assumption that the calculation that I saw all those years ago was correct (and also that I’m remembering it right). But armed with that knowledge, here is what I discovered. So sit back, relax, keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times, and bear with me.
You know the Edgeworld right? Y’know? This place?
Now, if my memory and this person’s math are both correct, then that means that from tip to Riverrise, the Edgeworld is about as long as the equator. The Equator is approximately 24,901 miles. So that’s the number I’m working with.
Now, Jupiter is 86,881 miles tall. That’s the diameter of the planet.
As you most likely remember, at the end of The Immortals (Spoiler Alert if you haven’t read book 10), we got this absolute mind fuck of an image:
I took the liberty of drawing on it and, eyeballing just a smidge (because it is past midnight and I am doing math for a fictional book series), I got this
(I know 92% seems super arbitrary, but I got that number from doing pixel measurements in photoshop XD) So doing that math we get: 24,901 + 24,901 + (92% of 24,901) = 24,901 + 24,901 + 22,908.9 =
72,710.9 miles
ok, well that’s a far cry from the 86,881 miles we’re looking for. Maybe I was a bit overzealous saying “Jupiter can fit under the Edgeworld”
But you know what planet CAN comfortably fit under the Edge?
#yeah im loosing my mind#have fun with this everyone#i need to sleep#the edge chronicles#tec#the edgeworld

*every word you say makes me like you more??*the edge chronicles are my favourite series that apparently No One's heard of,,, twig my beautiful boy...
I haven’t read an Edge Chronicles book since I was in. like. middle school? But god, I remember everything so clearly. All the monsters in the Deepwoods. Riverrise, the Twilight Woods, the sky pirates, the utter adoration my younger self felt for the Stone Pilot that, looking back, was pretty gay? The banderbears? Librarian knights? The Freeglades? The shrykes? The weird heartbreak I felt when Sanctaphrax was lost? The fucking Gloamglozer?
Those books are probably more than a little bit responsible for like, who I am today and how I think about fiction and stuff? Also I see people talk sometimes about how a lot of fantasy claims to be “Tolkienesque” but none of it ever really aligns with the sort of feeling of an ending that Lord of the Rings has, of a world that is maybe not dying but definitely an era of it that is. Like, things are passing from the world and it’s immensely sad and even if the heroes win, that isn’t something they’re going to be able to stop. I think the Edge is the only other thing I’ve ever read that actually captures that same just haunting feeling? Also Chris Riddell kicks ass
