Cameroonians Making Home in Minnesota
By 2022 an estimated 3,600 Cameroonians called the State of Minnesota home, more than doubling since 2016.[1] A member of this group, Adrian Abongmbu, who came here around 12 years ago, believes this growth is due to the affordable cost of living here. He said, the costs here are “very moderate. And it’s very family-friendly. It’s easy for people to start their lives in Minnesota.” He, his wife…

Episode 20: The Vultures (Part 1)
"No. Please. You can’t do this!" I heard DJ scream.
"Shut up!"
I slowly opened my eyes. My vision, blurry. All I could make out was colors and shapes, but I could hear DJ. He was in trouble.
"But..."
"Shut up!"
I heard a thump and low whimpering. I opened my eyes again. This time things were clearer now. I could see DJ laying in the dirt and three masked individuals surrounding him. All in leather jackets. One of them was a hulking man in a skull mask, another in a pig mask, and there was a smaller figure amongst them in a very familiar white cat mask. I was sure the cat one was the one from before. My so-called phantom who stalked us earlier. They aimed a gun right at DJ while the other two new ones stood by armed with rifles.
I called out to them and reached out my hand. "No...DJ. Don't...don't hurt him."
I was surprised they even heard me with how weak my voice sounded. It sounded so foreign to me. I knew something was wrong. Just breathing was pain-inducing. I cringed as an intense pain radiated from deep inside me, but I tried to remain focus on the situation. I got their attention away from my friend and that was a start in my mind. My smaller seemingly feminine phantom lowered her gun and gestured to the other two to standby. She walked over and stopped in front of me.
She stared down at me menacingly. "You're supposed to be dead. Why are you alive?!"
I wasn't quite prepared for the pain I would feel next. She kicked me hard in the side. The first blow made it feel like my body was going to explode, but she continued.
“Die already!” she roared kicking me even harder. She kicked and kicked. Every kick harder and faster with her big boot. I yelled out and squirmed in pain. Grinding of bone could be felt shifting inside me. I nearly blacked out, but she stopped after one last powerful blow. That last one turned me on my side and I curled up, but I remained conscious gasping for air.
She then gestured for one of her big brutes to come over and drag me to where DJ now sat. The skull one came over. As he dragged me I felt indescribable pain and screamed in agony. He let me go and I fell into a heap shaking. DJ hurried to my side looking positivity horrified as the frightening skull mask man watched over us.
"Get the other guy," she spat at her other minion. He nodded and they both walked away out of view. She came back seconds later rolling a cart. The same cart we had been using to carry scrap metal. In fact, all the metal we had gathered was still there. She dumped it out on the ground and thew DJ's crossbow in the cart. She collected the bows and picked up what looked like my ax.
As I watched her, her minion in the pig mask came back dragging a motionless Vince. He dragged him to the side as he whistled merrily to himself. He kneeled down over him and started to reach in his pockets, but as he did Vince suddenly came to life and kicked him.
The man fell backward letting out a yelp and the woman came rushing over to his side. She immediately aimed her gun at Vince.
"Oh for fuck sakes!" she huffed. "Get up and restrain him already."
He grumbled but did as he was told. He sat Vince up and forced him on his knees. He tied his hands up with zip ties. She then kneeled down to Vince's eye level.
"How about you cooperate and spare us the extra bullshit, huh?"
"Fuck off!" he roared. He then spat at her and his saliva hit her mask.
She shook her head. "Good thing for you I'm wearing a mask or I would be very angry about that," she chuckled. "Now, let's see. You're hurt? Is that a bullet wound?"
She touched his abdomen and looked at the bright red blood on her fingers. She rubbed it between them and seemed almost mesmerized by it.
"Did I do this?"
Then without warning, she jabbed those fingers in what I assumed was the wound. Vince's eyes grew wide and he screamed like I never heard him. He squirmed as she laughed maniacally. That same laugh I heard earlier. It brought chills down my spine.
She pulled her fingers away and blood dripped from the wound like a leaky faucet. Vince's fight and vigor clearly gone as he slumped over quivering.
She felt the blood between her fingers again."Not so tough now are we?" She giggled. "You know they can smell this right? I bet they can smell it now just wishing they could have a bite."
She then stood up and pointed to her pig mask henchmen. "Search him and do it quick. We need to get out of here."
He threw Vince on the ground and grind his face into the dirt with his boot.
He gave him a good kick and proceeded to search him. He took several trinkets and a pocket knife. He dragged Vince over to the middle where we sat. He then to my shock cut Vince's hands free.
"Do anything and I'll kill your friends. Understand?" he snarled. He then looked at us. "Same for you."
He walked over to the cart joining the woman. The skull mask man keeping his gun on us the whole time. As he remained on guard, his cohorts study our weapons. Each taking turns playfully posing with them.
"I'll call dibs on the machete," he jested.
She groaned. "No fair!"
"You're can have the crossbow."
"Whatever. Just pull the car around."
They then got serious again. The man hurried off and the woman turned her attention back to us. She took out a handgun and checked it’s bullets. She then threw us the gun to our amazement.
"I consider myself a fair person. There's three bullets in there. One for you each in the event you get bit or worse. Use them wisely."
The rev of an engine could be heard in the distance as she said this and a strange armored vehicle with a shovel pulled up. Vince picked up the gun and checked the chamber. Three bullets as she said were in it.
DJ then suddenly looked frantic looking around. He waved his hand to get the woman’s attention. “Wait! Our friend! The lady who was with us. Where is she?!” he cried.
The woman stopped and looked back at him. Her posture, rigid and cold. She said nothing. She turned back and continued walking towards the vehicle while Vince took aim.
"Wait!" I shouted, but it was too late.
Everything happened in slow motion. A single shot rang out and the woman's head jerked forward. I was fully expecting more gunfire and bullets to fly in our direction, but neither happened. Instead, she turned around and held the side of her head. She ordered her henchmen to go and jumped onto the vehicle. They sped off leaving us sitting there puzzled.
"Wait? For what? I'm sorry I missed!" Vince fumed glaring at me.
"You could have got us killed," I mumbled struggling to breathe. "We might need those bullets."
"I'm not offing myself if that's what you mean."
"No...numbskull."
DJ furrowed his brow. "But why give it to us in the first place?"
Unfortunately, DJ's question would be answered. Suddenly, car alarms rung out around us. Then the sickening sound of walkers could be heard with them. Hands and arms dug their way out of the trash heaps like graves. Twisted bodies hobbled their way toward us from where the car had disappeared.
"I thought you said it wasn't any walkers," DJ yelled as he climbed to his feet.
"How the fuck was I supposed to know? It wasn't at first," Vince said grunting as he rose up gingerly holding onto his stomach.
They both helped me up to my relief and the three us stood back to back at a loss for words or ideas. Would we die here?
"Over here," a voice called out.
We looked over to see a young man waving us down. The three of us looked at each other. It almost seemed like a mirage. He looked be standing in a doorway with a large metal door made into a trash heap. If it wasn't for my comrades seeing it, I'm pretty sure I would think I was hallucinating.
"In the words of the Terminator, come with me if you want to live!" he said in his best Arnold impression.
We looked at each other again. Confusion spread across all of our faces, but we ran towards him and he shut the metal door behind us as we dived in. Just in time too. The walkers were on our tails. They banged and clawed at the doors. It was a relief to get away from them. My body slid to the floor almost instinctively. What little adrenaline I had left depleted, but my eyes scanned the place. I wasn't too sure where we were. It looked like a giant metal room from first glance, but as my eyes adjusted I realized we were in a giant shipping container.
"Are you alright?" the young man asked looking down at me. I looked up into a boyish face with short brown hair and bright green eyes. He looked to be about twenty at most. He wore a hoodie and jeans, but also a mask pushed sideway off his face. A strange white mask with a toothy grin. It almost looked like a dog. My eyes narrowed on it. He smiled nervously. "Is something the matter?"
We heard the click of a gun and I looked up to see Vince aiming the gun we received at the boy. He turned around and put his hands up with a stunned and almost fearful expression on his face.
"Nice mask," Vince said smirking. "Let me see. I used one bullet, so I have two left. Each one for one of your legs maybe or I can just empty the clip in your face."
"I'm trying to help!"
Yeah sure. Just like the other three masked freaks who just helped themselves to our weapons and left us for dead."
"I'm not like them."
"Oh really?"
"I'm serious. I'm not! I want to help!" he cried. He sighed lowering voice. "I'm sorry. Let me introduce myself. My name. My real name is Billy. Nice to meet you."
DJ perplexed. "Billy?"
"Yeah. We don't usually share our names."
"We?"
"Yes. My group. We don't go by anything official really. Well, Ace often likes to call us a bunch of vultures and we sometimes jokingly call ourselves that. The Vultures"..., he said. He furrowed his brow and crossed his arms. "It sounds sort of stupid when I say it out loud."
"It sounds ok. Kind of cool."
"Really?"
"Um...excuse me, but can we get to the point?!" Vince huffed still aiming the gun at him. "Why are you helping us?"
"Oh, sorry," Billy said blushing. "So yeah. Well, I was watching. From in here. I saw what was happening and well I wanted to help. I didn't want to stand by anymore. So...um let me help you?"
The three of us stared at him like he was crazy. He smiled nervously again. "So yeah. Um...let's go?"
"Go where?" Martez scoffed. He pointed to the door. “There's still corpses outside and we need to find our friend. She might be still out there. That’s if she’s not...”
"Dead?" DJ said finishing his sentence looking upset.
Billy beamed suddenly. "You guys are talking about Lin?”
Vince gasped. "Woah. Woah. How?"
"Well, my sister had me out on recon after she trapped you guys. Told me to look for survivors. I found Lin buried under some hefty trash, but I dug her out and she was alive. Really alive. I was planning to take you to her actually. I can take you to her if you want.”

Thoughts of the Droid: Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Hello, people of Tumblr! How was your week? As always, I hope very well. People, this time I bring to you all my review and opinions about the new installment of the T-800 franchise: Terminator: Dark Fate. A film that has raised some controversy.
And it is not for less, since Terminator is one of the most beloved sagas within science fiction. Curiously, even after 35 years, the general public and especially fans of the saga, only love the first two deliveries; the remaining four, including Dark Fate, have them in very low esteem. Being honest with you, almost a week after its release, it was very frequent to see my YouTube recommendations critical of this movie, all of them very destructive, stating that Dark Fate was the worst film in the Terminator saga. Well, your favorite friend and reviewer Rankakiu has already seen that movie. Is it really a disaster? Or are we facing a misunderstood masterpiece? Well, let's go to the review to find out.
WARNING: NOT SPOILER FREE. Read at your own risk
Starting with the review, what did I think of the movie? Short answer: it is a passable movie and you can have a fun time watching it. But nothing else. Now let's go into details.
Characters: Without a doubt it is very pleasant to have back actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and actress Linda Hamilton playing their iconic roles of the T-800 and Sarah Connor, respectively. And although Hamilton had a long time not to return to her character, that does not affect at all, since she has shown not only her acting quality by reincarnating a warrior woman like Sarah Connor, but also demonstrates that she was born for that role. At no time in the movie did Hamilton's performance seem indifferent, but quite the opposite, since at all times she felt like Sarah Connor. With a reborn resentment towards machines and a more experienced soldier, but still Sarah Connor despite everything.
The same goes for the good Arnold Schwarzenegger, although in his case it is already easier for him to play the T-800 again, since he has participated in almost all the films. Even with that, like Hamilton, Schwarzenegger was born for the role of the 101 model of Cyberdine systems. Apart from the above, the film is responsible for humanizing the T-800 and thereby answering the question of whether a machine can develop attachment and affection towards humans.
Certainly previous films like Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Terminator: Genysis had already answered that question; however, in Terminator: Dark Fate, it gives another approach, differentiating itself from the aforementioned films and I liked that a lot. Both actors make the film much more accessible to watch and make the experience much more pleasing to me.
On the other characters, the truth be told, they are not (that) badly written. Of course, I feel they need that little spark called charisma to become characters that were much more memorable. One of the most rescued new characters, in my very personal opinion, is the character of Grace, played by actress Mackenzie Davis, who, in my opinion, did a good job of playing a warrior woman, enhanced with cyber technology, turning it into a kind of cyborg. You could say that his role represents a bit what was the character of Kyle Reese from the first Terminator movie, being a soldier with the mission to protect Dani Ramos. Something also to highlight, are the moments of action of the character, where we can see her fight hand in hand with a Terminator, being almost at the same level.
Grace clearly possesses reflexes, speed and strength well above a common human; However, this power can only be used in a short time and requires a special serum to keep her cyborg body functioning properly. That little detail pleased me a lot, since you have a lethal soldier, but not with too much exaggerated power, and besides, these restrictions of power are well founded within the story. While Grace doesn't leave the conventional clichs of being a strong woman and a war-hardened soldier, at least Davis's interpretation pleased me quite a bit, building a pretty decent character. If they really gave her a better-worked script, I'm sure Davis can surprise us.
On the other hand, we have actress Natalia Reyes, playing the character of Daniella "Dani" Ramos. Interestingly, in this character we see a kind of amalgam, a story that combines the situations experienced by the characters of Sarah Connor and John Connor. Dani's life, so normal and common, suddenly changes radically and without the possibility of returning to her previous way of life, when an artificial intelligence sends a machine to exterminate her (representing Sarah from Terminator). As soon as she knows the destiny that awaits her, she has no choice but to fight and accept her destiny as a protector and leader of humanity against the machines (adopting the role of the various incarnations of John Connor).
In my opinion she is a decent character and some may consider that her evolution as a character happens too quickly, but in my case, I think that is justified, since Dani Ramos is in the situation that she has to mature quickly and become a warrior, or else her death will be insured. If you ask me, Natalia did a good job, but unfortunately her character has a somewhat annoying approach, being more the fault of the script than anything else.
Of course, I cannot finish this point without mentioning the antagonist: the Terminator Rev-9, a model created by artificial intelligence called "Legion", which has created one of the most advanced terminator models ever seen. It has similar properties to other terminators seen above, particularly the T-1000 and the T-X (Terminatrix), only here it proves to be much more advanced than the mentioned models.
If there is something that has characterized the Terminator franchise, it is without a doubt, the creativity that they put on the various models, each with amazing capabilities that more than one military contractor would like to see in reality. And the Rev-9 is no exception. I certainly liked that ability that has to be divided into two completely autonomous machines, since with that ability, it can attack the same target from two flanks, or it can attack different targets at once.
It also highlights the enormous ease that Rev-9 has of hacking systems, computers and unmanned vehicles to search for and eliminate targets, as well as being able to infiltrate with great ease and above all to replicate a complex range of human emotions, in order to go unnoticed. A highly lethal machine that should not be underestimated and whose antagonism in the film pleased me quite a bit. Maybe not at the level of the legendary T-1000, starring Robert Patrick. But at least the interpretation of Gabriel Luna does not go unnoticed.
Story: Well, where to start? If you ask me, the story presented in this movie is something like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the story of how Grace and Rev-9 travel to the past to look for Dani Ramos and the last one seeing how her life changes dramatically, to later accept her destiny, results in a fairly decent story in my opinion. The problem is that history has certain interesting ideas, but in the end it does not know how to develop any in a satisfactory way. Certainly, I think they made the same mistake as Terminator: Genysis, basically leaving a lot of doubts and confusion in the viewer.
I think one of the biggest mistakes in the movie was precisely to eliminate John Connor, to be replaced by Dani Ramos. Look, I'm not against a woman leading an army of humans against the machines, but you have to keep in mind that in the previous five films, John Connor was always established as the leader of the resistance; That, coupled with the fact that it is a very abrupt change and without argumental justification, is not difficult to understand why many did not like this change at all.
In a personal opinion, I think it would have been better if they kept John Connor alive and at the same time, to interact with Dani Ramos, so that both of them would end up becoming the resistance leaders. Or, that John Connor died in adulthood, in the middle of the battle and that before he died, it was he himself who designated Dani Ramos as his successor in the resistance.
Certain doubts also arise as the plot develops. As for example: which of the two artificial intelligences sent all those terminators that ended up destroyed by Sarah Connor? If it was Skynet, it makes no sense, since in the end it did its job of killing John Connor. If it was Legion, why so far did it occur to send a Rev-9 to exterminate Dani Ramos? And since we're in those, how is it possible that the T-800, the one who killed John, knew exactly when a Terminator arrived? And how did Legion artificial intelligence originate? Grace explains how her world ended up destroyed by Legion, but never explains how it becomes an menace, if it was an artificial intelligence that acquired its own consciousness, or a kind of virus that altered it computer structure, something that explains Legion's origin.
In this regard, one might also ask, if the events that prevented the emergence of Skynet in Terminator 2, altered the original timeline. In any case, it must be stinking that no matter what Sarah Connor does, there will always be an artificial intelligence that will seek to destroy humanity.
Another mistake made by the film at the level of story is precisely to tell the same story that we have seen throughout the franchise: an artificial intelligence sends a machine to eliminate the future leader of humanity. The resistance, meanwhile, sends a soldier capable of fulfilling the mission and having a link with that leader. After a series of battles, they defeat the evil machine, while the person destined to lead mankind becomes aware of the role he will have in the future.
Although as I said, the story that tells the growth of Dani Ramos, is not bad and in fact, the character reaches its culminating evolution in the battle at the hydroelectric dam, where our heroes join with everything to end the Rev-9 , being one of the most exciting and successful sequences of the film.
Visuals & special effects: Without a doubt the best of the film. And it is really amazing that they could rejuvenate the characters of Sarah Connor, the T-800 and especially the character of John Connor. Similarly, the special effects are fascinating when it comes to showing the Rev-9 model in all its splendor, particularly where the Rev-9 shows its liquid metal state, much like a kind of live pitch, whether for regenerate or to divide into two combat units, or to create white weapons. The effects also stand out in themselves, by showing the conflict between the human race and Legion artificial intelligence, where you can see Terminators units, similar to the Rev-9 mentioned, only that they have more beastly forms and are more implacable. Similarly, the atmospheres about a destroyed world have that perfect apocalyptic atmosphere, a practically unrecognizable world, where humanity has to fight day by day against mechanical beings, ultimately lethal.
Action: Another remarkable aspect and also the best that the film offers. For example, the fight between Grace and the Rev-9 at the car plant is a good-to-face choreographed melee battle, enough to make it a memorable battle. It is an intense combat, full of strength and speed, where both fighters use their skills to end their adversary. I also highlight another scene, being this, the final battle in the hydroelectric dam, where our protagonists come together to definitively end the Rev-9, being really a scene of thrilling action, full of adrenaline at every moment. And while I recognize that there are unlikely action scenes, at least they are quite acceptable, since these are not very exaggerated. At least, in my opinion, it is worth watching the movie for the action scenes. In conclusion, Terminator: Dark Fate, is a film that will not be a masterpiece, but neither is it a horrible product. At most, it is a passable movie that can take your boredom away. However, being a product that conforms to more of the same, telling you the same story over and over again will undoubtedly become something totally dispensable. You watch the movie, nothing happens. You don't watch the movie, anyway, you don't miss much. Therefore, I give this movie 2.5 of 5 Revs-9. Sadly and ironically, Terminator: Dark Fate is waiting for a dark destiny: to be placed next to its three predecessors in the vault of oblivion.
Greetings

Sun Myung Moon was found guilty of US tax fraud and sent to Danbury prison in 1984
Guilty Father: Moon did not pay his taxes
TIME May 31, 1982
Soon after Sun Myung Moon opened an account at Chase Manhattan Bank in 1973, the Korean evangelist came by to make a deposit accompanied by two women carrying large purses stuffed with an assortment of bills. It took clerks an hour to count the currency, which totaled $100,000. A Chase banker recalled the women saying that the money came from street sales of flowers by members of Moon’s Unification Church. The Moonies, who refer to their leader as “Father,” and who regard him as a manifestation of God, were zealous collectors of funds, and deposits to his Chase accounts were frequent—perhaps too frequent. In a New York City federal court last week, a jury of ten women and two men decided, after four days of deliberation, that Moon was guilty of conspiring to avoid taxes on $162,000 in personal income for the years 1973 through 1975. He faces up to 14 years in prison, $25,000 in fines and a possible deportation hearing by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Moon, 62, was convicted of failing to report as personal income $112,000 of interest on $1.6 million in his Chase accounts, as well as $50,000 worth of stock in Tong Il Enterprises, a profit-making import company that Moon controlled. Convicted with him was his top financial aide, Takeru Kamiyama, 40, who was charged with helping the evangelist prepare false tax returns to conceal the income, attempting to block the subsequent Government investigation by submitting phony backdated documents, and lying to a grand jury.
Throughout the trial, which lasted more than six weeks, the evangelist’s attorney, Charles Stillman, insisted that the cash and stocks, although held by Moon, actually belonged to his Unification Church and were therefore not subject to taxation.
One key witness for the prosecution was Michael Warder, 35, a former church executive who now works for the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. He testified that on several occasions Kamiyama had turned down his requests to use funds from the Chase accounts for church purposes with the explanation that the bank deposits were “Father’s money . . . not accessible.”
Moon accepted the verdict impassively, but officials of his church denounced the judgment as “unjustified persecution.” The evangelist’s attorneys plan to appeal the conviction.

Walter Martin and Ravi Zacharias:
“Clearly Moon was convicted of evading taxes on $112,000 in personal income derived from interest on $1.6 million he had deposited for the church. He also received another $50,000 in unreported stocks for the taxable years 1973–1976.
Rev. Moon’s accountant, Takeru Kamiyama, was sentenced for conspiracy to file false tax returns, lying before a grand jury, and obstructing justice.
In contrast to Moon’s claim that it was the church’s funds, the testimony showed he personally purchased $1,500 gold watches, stock, and paid tuition for his children’s education from the accounts.
Rev. Moon was not persecuted by the IRS: he and his accountant evaded personal taxes and lied to the grand jury, which places them under the same laws as any other American citizen. It is noteworthy that Moon could have received a fourteen-year sentence, so his eighteen-month sentence shows the mercy of the jurors, not persecution.”

Nansook Hong: “The [tax] trial began on April 1, 1982. …
Father [Sun Myung Moon] demonstrated contempt for civil law every time he accepted a paper bag full of untraceable, undeclared cash collected from true believers…
There was no question inside the church that the Reverend Moon used his religious tax exemption as a tool for financial gain in the business world. … No matter what the lawyers said in court, no one internally disputed that the Reverend Moon commingled church and business funds. No one had any problem with it. How often had I heard church advisers discuss funneling church funds into his business enterprises and political causes because his religious, business, and political goals are the same: world dominance for the Unification Church. It was U.S. tax laws that were wrong, not Sun Myung Moon. Man’s law was secondary to the Messiah’s mission.”

Moon is sentenced to 18-month term
By Arnold H. Lubasch
New York Times July 17, 1982
... Mr. Moon, who would be eligible for parole after serving one-third of the sentence, was also fined the maximum of $25,000 plus the costs of prosecution. And he could face deportation proceedings.
The maximum sentence for Mr. Moon could have been five years for conspiracy and three years on each of three tax charges involved in his failure to report $150,000 in income from bank accounts and securities.
“I have treated him as I would treat anyone else,” Judge Goettel said. He also expressed his “sincere belief that the jury treated the case that way.
”The judge imposed a six-month sentence and a $5,000 fine on a codefendant, Takeru Kamiyama, one of Mr. Moon’s top aides. Mr. Kamiyama was convicted of the conspiracy charge, of assisting in the tax fraud and of lying to the grand jury. ...
Jo Ann Harris and Martin Flumenbaum, the chief prosecutors, urged the judge to treat Mr. Moon the same as “any high-ranking business executive” convicted of having used his organization to avoid personal income taxes.
In the crowded courtroom, filled with somber supporters of Mr. Moon, Judge Goettel declared that “general deterrence” called for a prison term. He said it would be unfair to free someone who could afford top lawyers when “poor people who get caught” go to jail for relatively minor crimes.
If Mr. Moon received a suspended sentence, the judge went on, millions of people would believe that “the rich and the powerful go free.”
Judge Goettel said he had received “several thousand letters” in Mr. Moon’s behalf, some from scientists, political leaders and officials of other churches expressing “fear that freedom of religion was being threatened.”
Judge Discounts Fears
“I think these fears are totally unwarranted in this case,” he continued, saying the letters indicated a misunderstanding of the issues. He added, “It is the crime that dictates the sentence more than anything else.”
The case was not limited to tax-fraud charges involving the failure to report income from bank accounts and securities, Judge Goettel said. He stressed that Mr. Moon had also been convicted of a conspiracy involving false documents, perjured testimony and obstruction of justice.
If the failure to report the income had been the only charge, a suspended sentence could be appropriate for Mr. Moon under the circumstances, the judge said. He suggested that the “the cover-up scheme” was more serious than the original offense.

Newsweek August 6, 1984
The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, 64, checked into his residence for the next 18 months – the federal prison in Danbury, Conn. – to find that he not only had 50 room mates but a new job as well. The convicted tax evader and leader of the Unification Church (which claims more than 2 million followers worldwide) was bunked in the facility’s low-security “camp” area and promptly assigned to KP duty. “He’s doing menial kitchen work, like loading dishwashers, mopping floors and washing tables,” says warden Dennis Luther, who explained that the new inmate’s employment options were limited because he doesn’t speak English. “I’m not worried about conversions,” added the warden. “We don’t allow inmates to be coerced into anything by anybody, whether they’re Protestant, Catholic or whatever.”

New York Times July 5, 1985
Sun Myung Moon’s scheduled full release from Federal custody is August 20.
On July 4, Mr. Moon reported to Phoenix House, a halfway house in Brooklyn involved in treating drug abuse, where he is to spend nights, except for possible single-night and weekend passes, for the next 46 days as a condition of his release. During the day, Mr. Moon, who is 65 years old, will be free to resume his church duties. ...
Mose Durst said, “We feel liberated from the burden of the unjust imprisonment of an innocent man of God. We are sorrowful because our nation, which we love and honor and who celebrates her 209th anniversary this very day, still finds it so difficult to put her most profound ideals into practice.”

When we heard how Father [Sun Myung Moon] was keeping church money in his name, the USA Headquarters warned him that in the USA the government often used the tax laws to imprison enemies that hadn’t broken any other laws. USA Headquarters advised Father not to put the money in his name, and explained the safe and proper way to bank the funds.
Father asked if what he was doing was illegal. The answer was: No, it’s not illegal, but can be twisted by the government to persecute Father and the church. Father decided to keep the money in his name.
USA Headquarters hired accounting consultants to advise the church about how to handle the funds. They told Father the same thing as our Headquarters staff had. Father’s response was the same, is it illegal. The answer was the same, “No, but…” Father decided to keep the money in his name.
At the time I didn’t know about this, so when I was asked to do Father’s taxes, I told him that he needed to have it done professionally, because in the USA, tax laws are used to put people in prison when there was no other way to imprison people. The answer came back, via David Kim, that it cost too much to do it professionally. (At the time I thought that the cost was for the accountant. Later I realized that it was to save about $5,000 dollars in taxes.) I still wouldn’t do it, so Joe Tully was recruited.
My opinion is that David Kim was advising Father and that Father was taking his advice. At the time David Kim was Father’s chief advisor in the USA. After David Kim’s advice proved faulty he was put out to pasture doing minor missions and finally sent to UTS.
My experience has been that Father trusted early followers who had proven their loyalty more than younger members, especially when the older members were Korean.
I believe that Father was afraid that the money would somehow be stolen by someone if it was in the name of the Church rather than his name. This has happened in Korea.

Takeru Kamiyama was also jailed for his part in the crime.
At one point Kamiyama got in trouble with Moon and was exiled to Japan to lecture Divine Principle. … Kamiyama got getting dangerously close to full insurrection by pushing his version of DP – “Our Course” onto all his department staff.
Next, he was exiled to Pantanal and I’m sure that wasn’t a walk in the park, either. I suspect Kamiyama has been raked over the coals. Interestingly, he is featured in that piece on Pantanal on the Catholic site, “The Tablet” December 16, 2000:
“They gave me an aerial photo of the place, without my asking, and showed me their accounts, again without my asking. The relevance of this is that the Moonies have been accused of money laundering, drug-trafficking and arms-trading. Such allegations may be a hysterical over-reaction. On the other hand, what on earth are the Moonies doing with huge tracts of land in the middle of nowhere?
All the money for this project comes from voluntary donations, said Takeru Kamiyama, who is in charge of Puerto Leda, and he showed me the list of offerings for that year, mostly in the range of $5,000 dollars and some more than $50,000 dollars. The total came to more than $1 million. Will it be enough for what he wants to do here? When I need more I can ask for more; that is not a problem. He told me it all came from Japanese Moonie missionaries or church leaders. That’s strange, I said, how do missionaries come to earn so much money to donate in a single year to a single project? He said they asked their wives and children to contribute, and some had businesses, and of course they all had their salaries. So the church pays them salaries, which they pay back in the form of donations, he said.
The land at Puerto Leda amounts to 80,000 hectares, but of course the aerial photo only showed the immediate vicinity of the river, where the Moonies (13 Japanese, only one of whom spoke Spanish) were now constructing a living base…
… From the outside balcony, my hosts pointed out some crocodiles swimming in the river, black dots from where we were. It was all very impressive, this taming of the wilderness, and the Moonies were beginning to relax. I understand that Reverend Moon has been imprisoned in the United States, I ventured. He knows all about that, said Mr Sano of his colleague, Mr Kamiyama. He was in prison with him.
How interesting, I said. You must be very close to Reverend Moon. Were you his only colleague to be imprisoned with him? Yes, he said, and before I came here I was president of the Church in Japan.
I was impressed. You are obviously a very important person in the movement, I said. (Later a Moonie pastor from Guyana confirmed to me that Mr Kamiyama was one of the most senior Church members in the world, but now taking a much more humble position. …)
I asked many questions about that fascinating moment in the Reverend Moon’s history. It was one of six imprisonments, they told me, in various countries, and the excuse for this pure political persecution, they told me, had been that Mr Kamiyama had brought $2 million into the United States and opened an account in the name of Reverend Moon. I should have put in the name of the Church. It was a small mistake, he said. As a result Reverend Moon was accused of evading $7,000 in taxes. Mr Kamiyama confided: I don’t like politicians. They are very complicated. They change their minds very quickly.”
I heard about that directly from Tom Boutte, the USA UC controller, who was privy to the affair. He told me that Kamiyama rejected Neil Salonen’s advice to open the account in the church’s name to avoid legal problems later. Kamiyama insisted Japanese members would be happier sending money “to Father”. Boutte said in his view, Kamiyama had no respect for American law and custom, and that’s why Moon ended up in Danbury prison. I believe it. And I further believe Moon knew it, too. He was mighty pissed off with Kamiyama.

2019 December 23-28 Circadian Rhythm Solstice Retrograde
“To live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rhythm. Do you feel your music?” - Michael Jackson
1-year goal: Negative rep size, positive flex shape? am oxygen intensive on slow push day. Eat less to cut, or only when you're hungry. Welcome to hell.
1-year plan: (1:4) Heavy push, small sets of average weight amount, quick rep without lock or flare, controlling the negative/descension, a tension or calisthenic resistance. Adjust weight or rack between reps. (2:4) Lite pull, larger sets of volumization 2-3 more reps on avg, slow rep that channels/recruits muscle, controlling the flex and negative reps fast so the weight/bar allows the muscle to take a gulp of bloodstream/circulation. Going at this with light resistance, each rep will pump b/c the release is less than a second. (3:4) Heavy legs, hard to do slow squats with quick ups, so machines or cables will help stabilize new movements. (4:4) Lite push, vice versa. Heavy pull, vice versa. Lite legs, vice versa.
Theory: Holiday was Tues & Wed, and already (Sunday) feeling toning during recuperation. Resistance/negatives for size, force production/pumping for active recovery. Light volume slow upward bodybuilding. Heavy resistance quick upward to protect tendons. Will see if herbivore a.m. and carnivore p.m. is sustainable, let alone possible.
Projection: I expect to stretch new-t-shirts by April confident prediction. As for cutting body-fat, give me six months to get under 10%. The key for me, possibly mesomorph, is to carb-load in the morning, not overeat, just eating like vegans for the one or two meals, going to the gym, eating meat afterwards. Soy sauce egg burrito is kinda-sorta. Cardio is going to train your stamina, improve your myocardial function. For me to lose weight I have to only eat when I’m hungry, and if I have to eat when I’m not hungry, go easy on the carbs - and adhering to the morning/evening diet plan. That’s partial ketosis and ketoacidosis, you can eat zero-carbs or follow a ketogenic diet, but it’s -ic/-ish, ketogenic, not biologic ketogenesis of lipids into lantern fuel. Eating too abundant protein will create bodyfat also, not just from carbs. More important to answer hunger instead of panic eating, cheat meals will become a thing of the past.
The hard part is not eating when I’m full, and not skipping meals before the gym because of my schedule. So decided to log a few categories of madness, totally unrelated to the gym, and will link later. LLAP. January is here, get ready for the crowd that’ll be gone by the ides of March, when we ...march. That must be some sorta typo.

Class Action Lawsuits, The Efforts To Limit Them, And Possible Alternatives
By David B. Arnold, American University Class of 2021
April 9, 2021
In America, tort and class action lawsuits are the ways citizens generally get compensation from corporate entities that have harmed them. Unfortunately, this has incentivized a cottage industry of media and think tank organizations who protects corporate interests by deriding anyone who uses these avenues as disingenuous. Politicians of a decidedly business friendly, or business backed cast, will harken to these stereotypes in an effort to limit the procedural options of people sickened or injured by corporate behavior.
An organization that exists largely for the purpose of spreading this narrative and lobbying to limit the ability of plaintiffs to sue is the American Tort Reform Association [1]. This is an organization with a decidedly grassroots feel, which speaks on its website about protecting ordinary people from unscrupulous lawyers, but the fact of the matter is that the group is largely funded by Fortune 500 companies [2]. The proposals this group advances are not all incredibly restrictive; they lobbied for a Pennsylvania law that would make an expression of condolence after a patient’s death inadmissible as evidence of malpractice[3]. However, in general, they have moved to limit venue, exclude scientific evidence, restrict joint and several liability, and limiting punitive damages[4].
Joint and several liability is the process that ensures that a victorious plaintiff can get their award from any liable party, and shift the obligation to them to be compensated by the other responsible parties[5]. ATRA believe that this is unfairly harsh[6]. The limit on punitive damages also protects from draconian damages awarded by the court, but we have to ask ourselves if it removes a powerful disincentive for corporations to misbehave. Often, compensatory damages are easily affordable for a company in a way they are not for an individual, making the deterrence value minimal.
Of course, this organization targest class action and mass tort lawsuits. ATRA even cites the relatively low success rate of class action lawsuits as a reason to oppose them [6], which is ironic, as ATRA’s policy proposals generally make class actions lawsuits less likely to deliver for plaintiffs. The ATRA website reads “class actions are now considered a means of defendant extortion and national policy-making by local court judges”[7]. Their platform of the ATRA consists of policy arguments that often consist of putting more procedural and geographic barriers to the class[8], because this makes it unlikely that the class can muster a group of the size to satisfy Rule 23(a) of the Federal Code of Civil Procedure [9]. This provision states that a class action can be allowed to proceed if “ the class is so numerous that joinder of all members is impracticable”. This article focuses on class action lawsuits because class actions are in general more popular than their cousin, mass tort lawsuits. A mass tort is a lawsuit similar to a class action, but the class is not a single party so each member of the class has to demonstrate particularity[10]. Considering a mass tort also falls personally on the officers of the company, who are almost certainly judgement-proof against a suit of this size, the class action is a much handier weapon for consumer advocates.
Political involvement in the class action process hit its climax in 2005 when Congress passed the Class Action Fairness Act. This law curbed some well known abuses; for instance it banned coupon settlements. Coupon settlements were the ethically dubious practice of a lawyer in a class action suit settling the claim not for compensation in cash, but for vouchers for the company [11]. This might be useless to the client (after all, what does one exactly do with a voucher for more products from a medical implant provider?) but the lawyer would be paid in cash. The Act also necessitated the approval by a judge of the lawyers payment plan at the formation of the class to curb abuses [12]. These were if anything changes that probably benefited plaintiffs, but the rest of the Act was not so useful to class action litigants.
Many of the provisions of this Act seem to have been drafted for the specific purpose of frustrating class action lawsuits. One of these provisions federalized a great number of types of civil controversy. This seems neutral, but in fact it made the process of pursuing lawsuits against business more difficult. This is because it restricted the “venue shopping” process that class action attorneys will often perform to choose a venue where a member of the class lives, but has regulations more likely to result in a favorable outcome[13]. A lawyer with a class including both Loiusianans and Californians would probably seek to sue in the less business friendly and more consumer friendly state, California. Congress in recent decades has not been sympathetic to class action plaintiffs, and out of a desire to prevent unscrupulous behavior by some lawyers have badly hurt the cause of consumer protection.
That being said, there is an alternative to the traditional class action system. We could leave punitive action entirely to regulators. There is an alternative system that is used for workers compensation claims in New Zealand that is highly efficient and popular, although it would be opposed in America by corporations and trial lawyers alike [14]. This so called “No-Fault” system created a national insurance scheme for corporate torts regarding workers compensation[15]. Corporations pay into a fund and the government awards money from the system to employees injured by corporate negligence. This removes incentives for the companies to put procedural obstacles in the way of the aggrieved workers because the company does not have to defend themselves against punitive or even compensatory damages (at least until the government sues them). The victims get relatively fast compensation compared to a lengthy legal battle, and do not have to hire counsel. A royal commission on workers compensation determined that 40% of the cost of paying workers compensation for injury went to legal fees, a huge loss to victim’s compensation[16]. If this program is not coupled with increased action by the regulatory agencies the short term results of such a policy may be highly traumatic to victims as the companies that harm them avoid consequences. Expanded regulatory action would probably also be necessary to compensate for the absence of the deterrent punitive damages represent.
The No-Fault system forces us to consider how we view the civil justice system. If plaintiffs merely seek quick financial relief then it may be preferable, but the fact of the matter is people often speak of pursuing lawsuits to get justice or recognition for their hurt. The Royal Commission in New Zealand criticized the “false morality” of tort law [17] but is not a key function of a court to give injured people a place where they can be punitive without causing harm to wider society? This is part of the wider argument between retributive and restorative principles in the legal system, and can, in addition to its policy value (or lack thereof), be a meaningful litmus test of whether the reader understand punishment as a fundamental aspect of a just society.

The People: A Self-Corrective Process
uncredited writer, Time, 5 May 1967
Dissent—its nature, its acceptance, and what to do about it—was the issue of the week.
Said Essayist Paul Goodman, a self-styled anarchist, in the current New York Review of Books: "Some kind of martial law and thousands of arrests for sedition are quite thinkable."
Said Wyoming's Democratic Senator Gale McGee: "I have not noticed that those who oppose our policies in Southeast Asia have been coerced into silence. If anything, the tempo of their vocal exercises has been increased."
Said Oregon's Democratic Senator Wayne Morse: "There has obviously been let loose in this country flag-waving propaganda designed to silence dissent."
Said University of Chicago Historian Daniel Boorstin: "Dissent is now in the hands of men who cannot bear to be embraced by authority, who are at their unhappiest when their ideas, as in the case of civil rights, are accepted by the authority they have railed against."
Ambivalent Attitude. Lyndon Johnson, the man around whom much of the talk swirled, seemed ambivalent in his own attitudes. At times, he has instinctively defended a free exchange of views, at others deplored the fact that Hanoi may misjudge dissent as proof of a divided people. For the most part, however, his public posture has been to acknowledge his critics' right to disagree—and his own right to disagree right back.
Thus, in a speech last week to White House Fellows, the President lauded their generation for its "questioning, critical spirit, skeptical of promises and rather impatient with results." He reminded them that they enjoyed "enormous freedom—freedom of inquiry, freedom of expression—yes, freedom of dissent." And that freedom, he said, "can never harm us if we remember that it is a two-way street."
The very next day, to be sure, he seemed to take a narrower view. The occasion—the posthumous award of a Medal of Honor to Marine Sergeant Peter Connor, who saved his comrades by hugging a grenade to his body—was hardly an appropriate one for a speech aimed at the Administration's critics, but Johnson seized it nonetheless. "Thousands of miles away from the battlefield on which he fell, his countrymen debate the course of the war he fought in," said the President. "The debate will go on, and it will have its price. It is a price our democracy must be prepared to pay, and that the angriest voices of dissent should be prepared to acknowledge."
"We Won't Go!" Not likely, or at least not very soon. On campuses from Harvard to Berkeley, a "We Won't Go!" movement is spreading swiftly. In the past three months, no fewer than 16 members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee have refused induction, echoing Stokely Carmichael's complaint that the draft is "calculated genocide" aimed at exterminating Negroes. Across the nation, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King is trying to mobilize 10,000 volunteers for his "Viet Nam Summer," aimed at "organizing and educating against the war." When the President was asked during his first major press conference in nearly two months about King's recommendation that young men defy the draft, he paused a long time before replying. "We regret when any person asks the young people of the country to refuse to serve what we believe to be the needs of the country," he said in scarcely audible tones. "We regret it very much."
At one point, the President picked up from his desk a copy of a Law Day speech delivered by oldtime New Dealer Thurman Arnold, 75, at Indiana's Valparaiso University Law School. A lawyer who helped Owen Lattimore and a number of low-level Government employees who came under attack during the McCarthy era, Arnold has impeccable credentials as a defender of dissent. Yet his speech was a blistering denunciation of "alienated intellectuals" who take the position that "dissent deserves special consideration, immunity from criticism and the right to shout down persons who disagree with them." Arnold recalled that Columnist Walter Lippmann, who thinks that the U.S. had no business sending ground troops to Asia in the '60s, also objected to American intervention in Europe in 1940 after Hitler's conquest of France. "Had Mr. Lippmann's advice been followed," said Arnold, "Hitler might have won the war." Arnold also noted that Chairman John Kenneth Galbraith of the Americans for Democratic Action recently bemoaned the possibility that a prolonged war in Viet Nam "could mean the death and burial of the Democratic Party." Snapped Arnold, a lifelong Democrat: "In other words, the Democratic Party is more important than the enforcement of international law." Replying to Senator Fulbright's well-worn charge that the U.S. is "arrogant," he asked: "Is it arrogance when we permit ourselves to be lectured by a Burmese citizen named U Thant and, instead of resenting his criticism, encourage and cooperate with him?"
"Even after the defeat of Hitler," said Arnold, "the intellectuals who are now condemning our efforts to enforce the international principle outlawing aggressive war failed to understand the role in international affairs which destiny had imposed on the United States." He witheringly attacked those who "think it is their function to portray the U.S. to the world as a stupid and brutal power unnecessarily killing thousands of people and burning villages. Their military advice is to stop shooting the enemy on the theory that if we did, the gratitude of the enemy would be so great as not to take advantage of us."
"Diplomatic Darwinism." The Republicans, who have been giving the President more support on Viet Nam than his own party, also became embroiled in the debate. A 91-page staff paper drawn for the Senate Republican Policy Committee—but not approved by the committee members—posed two questions about the war: "What precisely is our national interest in Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam and Laos? To what further lengths are we prepared to go in support of this interest?" The report attempted to disassociate Dwight Eisenhower from any connection with the current massive U.S. involvement and accused Johnson of "diplomatic Darwinism" in saying that his policy in Viet Nam is "part of a steady evolution from commitments made by earlier Presidents." In fairly general terms, it also criticized the conduct of the war.
Iowa's Senator Bourke Hickenlooper, chairman of the committee, said that he had released the report without reading it because he was worried that it might be leaked piecemeal and distorted. But G.O.P. leaders were aghast. Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, recuperating from pneumonia, left Walter Reed General Hospital and hurried to Capitol Hill with a statement: "We reiterate our wholehearted support of the Commander in Chief of our armed forces." House Minority Leader Gerald Ford seconded Dirksen, declaring that an "overwhelming majority" of G.O.P. Congressmen agreed that "we're not going to throw Viet Nam into the political arena."
Forget the First! But it will be hard to keep it out. During House hearings on the draft, Louisiana's Democratic Congressman F. Edward Hébert went so far as to ask whether there was any way to "get around" the First Amendment in order to prosecute "the Carmichaels and the Kings" for urging defiance of the draft. When he was told that there was not, Hébert impatiently cried: "Let's forget the First Amendment!" Mendel Rivers enthusiastically supported him, and chimed in with a few unilluminating comments of his own. "There are only two ideologies in the world," he said at one point. "One is represented by Jesus Christ and the other by the hammer and the sickle."
There seems little chance that the debate will become more muted, even as the American involvement in Viet Nam deepens. Meanwhile, the President's advisers are prevailing on him to stump the nation or at least take to TV in order to remind Americans of the reasons for the war and to rally support for it. So far he has made no decision. It is clear, however, that whatever arguments Johnson offers will have to be both eloquent and candid if he hopes to sway any appreciable number of dissenters to his side. It is even clearer that he can never hope to win them all over. Nor should he, if it is true that democracy's great self-corrective is reasonable dissent and debate.

Smoothie Meal Replacement For Weight Loss & Detoxifying
Meal Replacement Smoothies - For My Recipe CLICK HERE
Your average bodybuilder probably consumes at least one protein drink among other protein based supplements every day. For some of us, this may be an exciting incentive to buy protein powders from companies like GNC. For others of us, this may be a bit daunting; our aim is to lose weight, not to become Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But no matter your weight goal, power smoothies may be the way to go. Especially if they are homemade, you have total control over what goes into them, and therefore what issue they may address. They can be packed with fiber, soy or whey protein, essential fats, yogurt, and other ingredients that will keep you full and energized for hours to come. This means over time, you will be consuming fewer calories, without starving yourself, and therefore you will be able to lose weight and not force your body to store fat in starvation mode.
The New York Obesity Research Center recently conducted a study on the use of GNC’s soy-based shakes to test this theory. Those using the shakes lost 3 times more weight than those consuming the same number of calories in regular foods. Likewise, those eating Kashi Go Lean Meal Replacements over a 3 month period of time lost a significant amount more weight than those on a regular low calorie diet. Finally, slim fast users lose twice as much weight over a 12 week period of time as those again on a traditional low calorie diet.
Whether you are looking to build more muscle or just lose weight, consuming a higher amount of protein provided by some specialty protein shakes at breakfast will contribute. Harvard University showed that 6 hours after breakfast, those who consumed a high carbohydrate breakfast found themselves fatigued and inefficient, whereas those who consumed a high protein meal were more efficient and experienced a higher rate of metabolism.
In short, if you want to lose weight, use meal replacement shakes. It will shrink the stomach, allow you not to starve yourself to lose weight, rev up the metabolic rate, and it is highly adjustable according to your personal needs, wants, or goals. Get our FREE Green Smoothie recipe CLICK HERE

Edgar Allan Poe’s Genealogy II
You may remember that I had, previously, written a post about Edgar Allan Poe’s genealogy, as put forth by his ex-fiancee, Sarah Helen Whitman. In it, there was some mention of one of his ancestors saving a noblewoman who had been accused of witchcraft. I happened to have run across an entire chapter about it in an old book called, Irish Witchcraft and Demonology, by St. John D. Seymour. Sir Arnold le Poer, is Poe's relative. The other le Poer's in this tale? One would guess that they were, but it is never really stated directly and it is only suggested that John le Poer "probably" was related to Arnold. Here is the chapter in it’s entirety.
CHAPTER II
A.D. 1324
Dame Alice Kyteler, the Sorceress of Kilkenny
The history of the proceedings against Dame Alice Kyteler and her confederates on account of their dealings in unhallowed arts is to be found in a MS. in the British Museum, and has been edited amongst the publications of the Camden Society by Thomas Wright, who considers it to be a contemporary narrative. Good modern accounts of it are given in the same learned antiquary’s “Narratives of Witchcraft and Sorcery” in Transactions of the Ossory Archæological Society, vol. i., and in the Rev. Dr. Carrigan’s History of the Diocese of Ossory, vol. i.
Dame Alice Kyteler (such apparently being her maiden name), the facile princeps of Irish witches, was a member of a good Anglo-Norman family that had been settled in the city of Kilkenny for many years. The coffin-shaped tombstone of one of her ancestors, Jose de Keteller, who died in 128—, is preserved at S. Mary’s church; the inscription is in Norman-French and the lettering is Lombardic. The lady in question must have been far removed from the popular conception of a witch as an old woman of striking ugliness, or else her powers of attraction were very remarkable, for she had succeeded in leading four husbands to the altar. She had been married, first, to William Outlawe of Kilkenny, banker; secondly, to Adam le Blund of Callan; thirdly, to Richard de Valle—all of whom she was supposed to have got rid of by poison; and fourthly, to Sir John le Poer, whom it was said she deprived of his natural senses by philtres and incantations.
The Bishop of Ossory at this period was Richard de Ledrede, a Franciscan friar, and an Englishman by birth. He soon learnt that things were not as they should be, for when making a visitation of his diocese early in 1324 he found by an Inquisition, in which were five knights and numerous nobles, that there was in the city a band of heretical sorcerers, at the head of whom was Dame Alice. The following charges were laid against them.
1. They had denied the faith of Christ absolutely for a year or a month, according as the object they desired to gain through sorcery was of greater or less importance. During all that period they believed in none of the doctrines of the Church; they did not adore the Body of Christ, nor enter a sacred building to hear mass, nor make use of consecrated bread or holy water.
2. They offered in sacrifice to demons living animals, which they dismembered, and then distributed at cross-roads to a certain evil spirit of low rank, named the Son of Art.
3. They sought by their sorcery advice and responses from demons.
4. In their nightly meetings they blasphemously imitated the power of the Church by fulminating sentence of excommunication, with lighted candles, even against their own husbands, from the sole of their foot to the crown of their head, naming each part expressly, and then concluded by extinguishing the candles and by crying Fi! Fi! Fi! Amen.
5. In order to arouse feelings of love or hatred, or to inflict death or disease on the bodies of the faithful, they made use of powders, unguents, ointments, and candles of fat, which were compounded as follows. They took the entrails of cocks sacrificed to demons, certain horrible worms, various unspecified herbs, dead men’s nails, the hair, brains, and shreds of the cerements of boys who were buried unbaptized, with other abominations, all of which they cooked, with various incantations, over a fire of oak-logs in a vessel made out of the skull of a decapitated thief.
6. The children of Dame Alice’s four husbands accused her before the Bishop of having killed their fathers by sorcery, and of having brought on them such stolidity of their senses that they bequeathed all their wealth to her and her favourite son, William Outlawe, to the impoverishment of the other children. They also stated that her present husband, Sir John le Poer, had been reduced to such a condition by sorcery and the use of powders that he had become terribly emaciated, his nails had dropped off, and there was no hair left on his body. No doubt he would have died had he not been warned by a maid-servant of what was happening, in consequence of which he had forcibly possessed himself of his wife’s keys, and had opened some chests in which he found a sackful of horrible and detestable things which he transmitted to the bishop by the hands of two priests.
7. The said dame had a certain demon, an incubus, named Son of Art, or Robin son of Art, who had carnal knowledge of her, and from whom she admitted that she had received all her wealth. This incubus made its appearance under various forms, sometimes as a cat, or as a hairy black dog, or in the likeness of a negro (Æthiops), accompanied by two others who were larger and taller than he, and of whom one carried an iron rod.
According to another source the sacrifice to the evil spirit is said to have consisted of nine red cocks, and nine peacocks’ eyes. Dame Alice was also accused of having “swept the streets of Kilkenny betweene compleine and twilight, raking all the filth towards the doores of hir sonne William Outlawe, murmuring secretly with hir selfe these words:
“To the house of William my sonne Hie all the wealth of Kilkennie towne.”
On ascertaining the above the Bishop wrote to the Chancellor of Ireland, Roger Outlawe, who was also Prior of the Preceptory of Kilmainham, for the arrest of these persons. Upon this William Outlawe formed a strong party to oppose the Bishop’s demands, amongst which were the Chancellor, his near relative, and Sir Arnold le Poer, the Seneschal of Kilkenny, who was probably akin to Dame Alice’s fourth husband. The Chancellor in reply wrote to the Bishop stating that a warrant for arrest could not be obtained until a public process of excommunication had been in force for forty days, while Sir Arnold also wrote requesting him to withdraw the case, or else to ignore it. Finding such obstacles placed in his way the Bishop took the matter into his own hands, and cited the Dame, who was then in her son’s house in Kilkenny, to appear before him. As might be expected, she ignored the citation, and fled immediately.
Foiled in this, he cited her son William for heresy. Upon this Sir Arnold came with William to the Priory of Kells, where De Ledrede was holding a visitation, and besought him not to proceed further in the matter. Finding entreaty useless he had recourse to threats, which he speedily put into execution. As the Bishop was going forth on the following day to continue his visitation he was met on the confines of the town of Kells by Stephen le Poer, bailiff of the cantred of Overk, and a posse of armed men, by whom he was arrested under orders from Sir Arnold, and lodged the same day in Kilkenny jail. This naturally caused tremendous excitement in the city. The place became ipso facto subject to an interdict; the Bishop desired the Sacrament, and it was brought to him in solemn procession by the Dean and Chapter. All the clergy, both secular and religious, flocked from every side to the prison to offer their consolation to the captive, and their feelings were roused to the highest pitch by the preaching of a Dominican, who took as his text, Blessed are they which are persecuted, &c. Seeing this, William Outlawe nervously informed Sir Arnold of it, who thereupon decided to keep the Bishop in closer restraint, but subsequently changed his mind, and allowed him to have companions with him day and night, and also granted free admission to all his friends and servants.
After De Ledrede had been detained in prison for seventeen days, and Sir Arnold having thereby attained his end, viz. that the day on which William Outlawe was cited to appear should in the meantime pass by, he sent by the hands of his uncle the Bishop of Leighlin (Miler le Poer), and the sheriff of Kilkenny a mandate to the constable of the prison to liberate the Bishop. The latter refused to sneak out like a released felon, but assumed his pontificals, and, accompanied by all the clergy and a throng of people, made his way solemnly to S. Canice’s Cathedral, where he gave thanks to God. With a pertinacity we cannot but admire he again cited William Outlawe by public proclamation to appear before him, but before the day arrived the Bishop was himself cited to answer in Dublin for having placed an interdict on his diocese. He excused himself from attending on the plea that the road thither passed through the lands of Sir Arnold, and that in consequence his life would be in danger.
De Ledrede had been arrested by Le Poer’s orders in Lent, in the year 1324. On Monday following the octave of Easter the Seneschal held his court in Kilkenny, to which entrance was denied the Bishop; but the latter, fully robed, and carrying the Sacrament in a golden vase, made his way into the court-room, and “ascending the tribunal, and reverently elevating the Body of Christ, sought from the Seneschal, Justiciary, and Bailiffs that a hearing should be granted to him.” The scene between the two was extraordinary; it is too lengthy to insert, and does not bear to be condensed—suffice it to say that the Seneschal alluded to the Bishop as “that vile, rustic, interloping monk (trutannus), with his dirt (hordys) which he is carrying in his hands,” and refused to hear his arguments, or to afford him any assistance.
Though we have lost sight for a while of Dame Alice, yet she seems to have been eagerly watching the trend of events, for now we find her having the Bishop summoned to Dublin to answer for having excommunicated her, uncited, unadmonished, and unconvicted of the crime of sorcery. He attended accordingly, and found the King’s and the Archbishop’s courts against him to a man, but the upshot of the matter was that the Bishop won the day; Sir Arnold was humbled, and sought his pardon for the wrongs he had done him. This was granted, and in the presence of the council and the assembled prelates they mutually gave each other the kiss of peace.
Affairs having come to such a satisfactory conclusion the Bishop had leisure to turn his attention to the business that had unavoidably been laid aside for some little time. He directed letters patent, praying the Chancellor to seize the said Alice Kyteler, and also directed the Vicar-General of the Archbishop of Dublin to cite her to respond on a certain day in Kilkenny before the Bishop. But the bird escaped again out of the hand of the fowler. Dame Alice fled a second time, on this occasion from Dublin, where she had been living, and (it is said) made her way to England, where she spent the remainder of her days unmolested. Several of her confederates were subsequently arrested, some of them being apparently in a very humble condition of life, and were committed to prison. Their names were: Robert of Bristol, a clerk, John Galrussyn, Ellen Galrussyn, Syssok Galrussyn, William Payn de Boly, Petronilla of Meath, her daughter Sarah, Alice the wife of Henry Faber, Annota Lange, and Eva de Brownestown. When the Bishop arrived in Kilkenny from Dublin he went direct to the prison, and interviewed the unfortunates mentioned above. They all immediately confessed to the charges laid against them, and even went to the length of admitting other crimes of which no mention had been made; but, according to them, Dame Alice was the mother and mistress of them all. Upon this the Bishop wrote letters on the 6th of June to the Chancellor, and to the Treasurer, Walter de Islep, requesting them to order the Sheriff to attach the bodies of these people and put them in safe keeping. But a warrant was refused, owing to the fact that William Outlawe was a relation of the one and a close friend of the other; so at length the Bishop obtained it through the Justiciary, who also consented to deal with the case when he came to Kilkenny.
Before his arrival the Bishop summoned William Outlawe to answer in S. Mary’s Church. The latter appeared before him, accompanied by a band of men armed to the teeth; but in no way overawed by this show of force, De Ledrede formally accused him of heresy, of favouring, receiving, and defending heretics, as well as of usury, perjury, adultery, clericide, and excommunications—in all thirty-four items were brought forward against him, and he was permitted to respond on the arrival of the Justiciary. When the latter reached Kilkenny, accompanied by the Chancellor, the Treasurer, and the King’s Council, the Bishop in their presence recited the charges against Dame Alice, and with the common consent of the lawyers present declared her to be a sorceress, magician, and heretic, and demanded that she should be handed over to the secular arm and have her goods and chattels confiscated as well. Judging from Friar Clyn’s note this took place on the 2nd of July. On the same day the Bishop caused a great fire to be lit in the middle of the town in which he burnt the sackful of magical stock-in-trade, consisting of powders, ointments, human nails, hair, herbs, worms, and other abominations, which the reader will remember he had received from Sir John le Poer at an early stage in the proceedings.
Further trouble arose with William Outlawe, who was backed by the Chancellor and Treasurer, but the Bishop finally succeeded in beating him, and compelled him to submit on his bended knees. By way of penance he was ordered to hear at least three masses every day for the space of a year, to feed a certain number of poor people, and to cover with lead the chancel of S. Canice’s Cathedral from the belfry eastward, as well as the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin. He thankfully agreed to do this, but subsequently refused to fulfil his obligations, and was thereupon cast into prison.
What was the fate of Dame Alice’s accomplices, whose names we have given above, is not specifically recorded, except in one particular instance. One of them, Petronilla of Meath, was made the scapegoat for her mistress. The Bishop had her flogged six times, and under the repeated application of this form of torture she made the required confession of magical practices. She admitted the denial of her faith and the sacrificing to Robert, son of Art, and as well that she had caused certain women of her acquaintance to appear as if they had goats’ horns. She also confessed that at the suggestion of Dame Alice she had frequently consulted demons and received responses from them, and that she had acted as a “medium” (mediatrix) between her and the said Robert. She declared that although she herself was mistress of the Black Art, yet she was as nothing in comparison with the Dame from whom she had learnt all her knowledge, and that there was no one in the world more skilful than she. She also stated that William Outlawe deserved death as much as she, for he was privy to their sorceries, and for a year and a day had worn the devil’s girdle[6] round his body. When rifling Dame Alice’s house there was found “a wafer of sacramental bread, having the devil’s name stamped thereon instead of Jesus Christ, and a pipe of ointment wherewith she greased a staffe, upon which she ambled and galloped through thicke and thin, when and in what manner she listed.” Petronilla was accordingly condemned to be burnt alive, and the execution of this sentence took place with all due solemnity in Kilkenny on 3rd November 1324, which according to Clyn fell on a Sunday. This was the first instance of the punishment of death by fire being inflicted in Ireland for heresy.
Whether or not Petronilla’s fellow-prisoners were punished is not clear, but the words of the anonymous narrator show us that the burning of that unfortunate wretch was rather the beginning than the end of persecution—that in fact numerous other suspected persons were followed up, some of whom shared her terrible fate, while to others milder forms of punishment were meted out, no doubt in proportion to their guilt. He says: “With regard to the other heretics and sorcerers who belonged to the pestilential society of Robin, son of Art, the order of law being preserved, some of them were publicly burnt to death; others, confessing their crimes in the presence of all the people, in an upper garment, are marked back and front with a cross after they had abjured their heresy, as is the custom; others were solemnly whipped through the town and the market-place; others were banished from the city and diocese; others who evaded the jurisdiction of the Church were excommunicated; while others again fled in fear and were never heard of after. And thus, by the authority of Holy Mother Church, and by the special grace of God, that most foul brood was scattered and destroyed.”
Sir Arnold le Poer, who had taken such a prominent part in the affair, was next attacked. The Bishop accused him of heresy, had him excommunicated, and committed prisoner to Dublin Castle. His innocency was believed in by most people, and Roger Outlawe, Prior of Kilmainham, who also figures in our story, and who was appointed Justiciary of Ireland in 1328, showed him some kindness, and treated him with humanity. This so enraged the Bishop that he actually accused the Justiciary of heresy. A select committee of clerics vindicated the orthodoxy of the latter, upon which he prepared a sumptuous banquet for his defenders. Le Poer died in prison the same year, 1331, before the matter was finally settled, and as he was under ban of excommunication his body lay unburied for a long period.
But ultimately the tables were turned with a vengeance. De Ledrede was himself accused of heresy by his Metropolitan, Alexander de Bicknor, upon which he appealed to the Holy See, and set out in person for Avignon. He endured a long exile from his diocese, suffered much hardship, and had his temporalities seized by the Crown as well. In 1339 he recovered the royal favour, but ten years later further accusations were brought to the king against him, in consequence of which the temporalities were a second time taken up, and other severe measures were threatened. However, by 1356 the storm had blown over; he terminated a lengthy and disturbed episcopate in 1360, and was buried in the chancel of S. Canice’s on the north side of the high altar. A recumbent effigy under an ogee-headed canopy is supposed to mark the last resting-place of this turbulent prelate.
In the foregoing pages we have only given the barest outline of the story, except that the portions relative to the practice of sorcery have been fully dealt with as pertinent to the purpose of this book, as well as on account of the importance of the case in the annals of Irish witchcraft. The story of Dame Alice Kyteler and Bishop de Ledrede occupies forty pages of the Camden Society’s publications, while additional illustrative matter can be obtained from external sources; indeed, if all the scattered material were gathered together and carefully sifted it would be sufficient to make a short but interesting biography of that prelate, and would throw considerable light on the relations between Church and State in Ireland in the fourteenth century. With regard to the tale it is difficult to know what view should be taken of it. Possibly Dame Alice and her associates actually tried to practise magical arts, and if so, considering the period at which it occurred, we certainly cannot blame the Bishop for taking the steps he did. On the other hand, to judge from the analogy of Continental witchcraft, it is to be feared that De Ledrede was to some extent swayed by such baser motives as greed of gain and desire for revenge. He also seems to have been tyrannical, overbearing, and dictatorial; according to him the attitude adopted by the Church should never be questioned by the State, but this view was not shared by his opponents. Though our sympathies do not lie altogether with him, yet to give him his due it must be said that he was as ready to be persecuted as to persecute; he did not hesitate to face an opposition which consisted of some of the highest in the land, nor did fear of attack or imprisonment (which he actually suffered) avail to turn him aside from following the course he had mapped out for himself.
It should be noticed that the appointment of De Ledrede to the See of Ossory almost synchronised with the elevation of John XXII to the Papacy. The attitude of that Pope towards magical arts was no uncertain one. He believed himself to be surrounded by enemies who were ever making attempts on his life by modelling images of him in wax, to be subsequently thrust through with pins and melted, no doubt; or by sending him a devil enclosed in a ring, or in various other ways. Consequently in several Bulls he anathematised sorcerers, denounced their ill-deeds, excited the inquisitors against them, and so gave ecclesiastical authorisation to the reality of the belief in magical forces. Indeed, the general expressions used in the Bull Super illius specula might be applied to the actions of Dame Alice and her party. He says of certain persons that “they sacrifice to demons and adore them, making or causing to be made images, rings, &c., with which they draw the evil spirits by their magical art, obtain responses from them, and demand their help in performing their evil designs.”
Heresy and sorcery were now identified, and the punishment for the former was the same as that for the latter, viz. burning at the stake and confiscation of property. The attitude of this Pontiff evidently found a sympathiser in Bishop de Ledrede, who deemed it necessary to follow the example set by the Head of the Church, with what results we have already shown: thus we find in Ireland a ripple of the wave that swept over Europe at this period.
It is very probable, too, that there were many underlying local causes of which we can know little or nothing; the discontent and anger of the disinherited children at the loss of the wealth of which Dame Alice had bereft them by her exercise of “undue influence” over her husbands, family quarrels, private hatreds, and possibly national jealousy helped to bring about one of the strangest series of events in the chequered history of Ireland.

2020 Jan 27-32 The Right Foundations
“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Wouldn't go to gym without eating, if I didn’t eat, I wouldn't go, and’ve been lucky, and won't go if depressed because I don't eat when I'm sad, I just stay at home in self-defeat. Obvious restless from dieting, losing sleep staying up an hour, or not getting to bed an hour earlier, or waking up an hour early, or an hour too early, that’s like four hours lost sleep, it damages proper thought -- carbs around/during workout has changed that.
Clearly not parallel to superheroes, but wow deciding to eat mid workout, on a timer after starting, to see if it quickens workout, does improve ability to break a sweat and get shit done. Still sick of bad miracle diets into trendy workouts, and realized training intensity needs carbs, as runners likely do too, and then replace glycogen after workout, and eat just enough carbs to fall asleep. Normalcy is easier with it, if intra-workout carbs are key (only tried it once) and gains/cut drops to 222lbs, I’ll test lean-bulk right after. Time will tell. Now that mid-workout food is good instead of groggy, hopefully better reps, gains, shorter session, “in modus bonus.”
If 18-25 might I suggest some heavy af 5-3-1 sets, or some weighted reps to infinity, until your target muscle burns ‘for reps, not PR’ as some say. Weakspots training without eating right-before (semi-fasted) soon kills getting any good reps even at all, no flexes, no PRs, half-assed and deenergized, and mental concentration shot, especially after giving up big breakfast. Malnourished clouds focus, no suns out, no guns out, kinda sorta.

“Don’t Hit the Wall: During intense endurance workouts, your muscle glycogen can be depleted in as little as an hour. Once depleted, your body can only work at 50% of its maximal capacity. Your energy levels plummet and you feel extremely fatigued. Fortunately, proper mid-workout fueling can prevent you from bonking and keep you going strong.”
TLDR: https://www.insider.com/how-to-lose-fat-transform-body-for-life-essential-steps-2020-1 have a routine, focus on macronutrients, get enuf sleep, don’t overeat, hydrate;
TLDR https://www.bodybuilding.com/content/arnold-schwarzenegger-8-best-training-principles.html use your brain, train better than others, right exercises, heavy low reps, variety, train for the pump, work on weak spots, both learn and adapt,

#48 Lite Legs (40set p.o.) 🍞 💧
Treadmill 15 min /bpm > Horizon 1-Leg *10/10*6-LR > Body Squat *10/x > Horizon Press *10/101030305050 > Stand Leg Curl *10/x > Side Bends *10/353550506565- > Leg Ext *10/101030305050- 🍞 💧HR > Leg Curl *10/3030505070-70- > Heel Raise *10/505070709090-L > Rope Crunch *10/5050606070 > Push Crunch *10/606070708080-? ~HR > Treadmill bpm 81!/ ½ 💧/6min 1.5HRS /15min
Bread definitely way to go easier, empty gym equipment, but still 30% faster, better reps, etc, a bought baguette, had angle vents, tore heel, et, halfway in hour, 5*15min sets by 12, superbueno, dunno 10min for reps or heavier next; don't even need carb at terminus, less nervous shock; and baguette dollar cost; ukno gonna try treadmill more without thirds;
C barley, 2 eggs, ½ L 20g whey, chunk of bread ~100cal, workout { ½ L taurine/B etc, chunk bread ~100c, ½ L,}, C barley, 2 eggs, ½ L 20g whey; ⅓ refried beans, pita; C barley, melt cheese;
According to this - https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/20-50-how-much - the chunk-o-bread is about 100 carbs, I’d been saying that my carb requirements had gone up, but now maybe just the workout demand was getting higher without eating low GI val tree bark lel,
Sunday
Bread, bread, slice of pizza, ½ L 20g whey, 4 tacos, 2 cups juice; 4 mini tacos; pb grapes, mini pop, spinach burger mini pop; Pushups PR every morning?
