Alanna Vagianos at HuffPost:
It’s hard to keep track of the damage President Donald Trump has done in his first 100 days in office, from unlawfully deporting migrants and some U.S. citizens and declaring a war on transgender children to dismantling federal agencies and imposing tariffs that cratered the stock market. But one dark fear has not yet been realized: an aggressive push to effectively outlaw abortion nationwide. There was widespread concern in 2024 — based on the positions of many people in Trump’s orbit — that his administration might start enforcing the centuries-old Comstock Act or have the Food and Drug Administration pull approval for abortion drugs. While that hasn’t come to pass, the Trump administration has chipped away at choice in less visible ways and done substantial damage to federal reproductive health services.
Not too long ago, Trump was an unapologetic anti-abortion advocate who pandered often to his evangelical far-right base. He openly celebrated his role in repealing 50 years of federal abortion protections, telling Fox News that “it’s a beautiful thing to watch” states ban abortion. But once it became clear that abortion bans are inherently unpopular, Trump shied away from his record: softening his rhetoric around reproductive rights, waffling on a national abortion ban and peddling his lie that “everyone” wanted Roe v. Wade repealed. Since winning the presidential election, Trump has continued this stance of purported moderation. But he still has an anti-abortion agenda — his administration has just gotten better at hiding it. “The administration wants you to think that they are not paying attention to repro and that abortion is an issue left to the states … but that is completely untrue,” Ianthe Metzger, senior director of advocacy communications at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, told HuffPost. In his first week as president, Trump reinstated the “global gag rule,” a policy that restricts abortion access around the world and hinders sexual and reproductive health access for many rural communities in developing nations. He signed an executive order to enforce the Hyde Amendment, a 50-year-old federal rule that bans the use of government funds for most abortions for people covered by Medicaid. And those were just the policy decisions generally expected of a Republican administration. Others have been more extraordinary — undermining decades of political precedent and quietly targeting abortion as well as basic reproductive health care like birth control and sexually transmitted infection prevention and testing.
The administration is also working to “change the culture” around family and childbirth. But instead of subsidizing child care or mandating paid parental leave, the White House is entertaining pro-natalist policy ideas, a few of which were once used by the Nazis. One policy idea floated to the White House included awarding the “National Medal of Motherhood” to any woman who has six or more children. In Nazi Germany, women were awarded a bronze medal for having four children, silver for six and gold for eight children. Days into his presidency, Trump made an unprecedented move when he limited enforcement of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act — a federal law created to safeguard abortion clinics, patients and providers. He dismissed a handful of current ongoing investigations and pardoned 23 people for FACE convictions, effectively declaring open season on already vulnerable abortion clinics, patients and workers. He also rejoined the Geneva Consensus, an extreme global anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQIA pact created during the first Trump administration that aligns the U.S. with socially conservative countries, some of which have been accused of rampant human rights violations.
[...]
Recently, the Trump administration joined a Supreme Court case alongside South Carolina, arguing that states should be allowed to exclude Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs, even for health care services outside of abortion care. Similar to Title X funding cuts, this move would effectively defund Planned Parenthood, a long-held GOP goal. The Trump administration’s unusual decision to join the case shows just how far they’re willing to go to decimate abortion access as well as birth control, STI testing and other vital reproductive health care. One of the main focuses of Trump’s first 100 days in office has been attacking LGBTQIA communities, specifically transgender kids in women’s sports. And while some may not realize it, attacks on the trans community and attacks on reproductive justice are inherently linked. Trump’s anti-trans executive order contained “personhood” language, used often by extremist anti-abortion groups that believe life begins at conception and fetuses should have the same legal rights as born children. If fetal personhood ever became law, it would immediately create a total abortion ban and criminalize IVF, stem cell research and even some forms of birth control. Trump has also lined his cabinet with abortion opponents, creating one of the most extreme anti-choice administrations in history.
Attorney General Pam Bondi instructed the Department of Justice to dismiss a high-profile federal lawsuit over the right to emergency abortion care in Idaho — sending a clear message that the administration would rather pregnant women continue dying than offer safe abortion and miscarriage care. The federal law at the center of the suit, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, requires hospitals that participate in Medicare (the majority of hospitals in the country) to offer abortion care if it’s necessary to stabilize the health of a pregnant patient while they’re experiencing a medical emergency. The person in Trump’s administration in charge of enforcing that law is Dr. Mehmet Oz, a former TV personality who is openly anti-abortion and believes abortion decisions should be between “a woman, her doctors and her local political leaders.” Now that the lawsuit is dismissed, the Trump administration has the ability to rewrite federal EMTALA guidance, which would follow the far-right Project 2025 playbook perfectly.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is responsible for gutting several HHS agencies as well as cutting Title X funding. Trump tasked him with studying the safety of mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortion, despite over two decades of safe and effective use by millions of Americans. Many of the HHS agencies Kennedy decimated were also the ones that would have studied mifepristone. Kennedy himself could pull FDA approval of mifepristone, or FDA Commissioner Martin Makary could. The former Fox News contributor routinely spread anti-abortion misinformation before Trump made him head of the FDA. During Makary’s confirmation hearing, he refused to answer questions about his plans for mifepristone.
Donald Trump’s anti-abortion policies haven’t gained much attention, but he is still a danger to abortion rights.

The Political Platform of the Democratic Socialists of America:
Abolition of the Carceral State
Abolition of White Supremacy
A Powerful Labor Movement
Economic Justice
Gender and Sexuality Justice
Green New Deal
Health Justice
Housing for All
International Solidarity,
Anti-Imperialism, and Anti-Militarism
DSA' Political Platform on
Gender and Sexuality Justice
DSA is a socialist feminist organization. We organize people of all genders to ght against systems of oppression and exploitation, including patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy.
Liberal representation feminism is content with increasing the number of female faces in oppressive structures. A few women in positions of power, however, is not liberation. Liberation means all genders having freedom and control over their own lives and bodies through ending exploitation.
DSA ghts to build a feminism for and by the working class and all oppressed people. Capitalism specically impacts women workers through devaluing of feminized labor, sexual violence in the workplace, unpaid housework, and the expectation of emotional labor.
DSA ghts for the democratization of domestic and care work, political and social liberation for all genders, full bodily autonomy for all, and the end of state recognition of the gender binary.
We stand in solidarity with grassroots feminist movements around the world in their ght against capitalist oppression and exploitation.
We organize for the liberation of queer people, understanding that liberation – having the power to define our life choices, and fulfill our greatest potential — depends on achieving economic justice for the multiracial working class, and all oppressed people.
We ght against violence against black transgender women, federal and state discrimination, and all political and social barriers to full control over ourbodies and sexualities. We seek equity so that queer people, subject to discrimination and violence, have the means to livea liberated, fullling life.
We strongly oppose “rainbow capitalism,” in which banks, police, andcorporations wrap themselves in Pride flags during June in order to make profit, all while exploiting queer workers.
We likewise reject “homonationalism,” the process of using superficial support of LGBTQ+ people, such as US military propaganda featuring gay couples, to provide cover for the brutalities of the American empire. Companies in the military-industrial complex may march in corporate Pride parades, but we recognize them for what they are: enemies of the global working class, and of the international queer liberation movement.
We seek nothing less than liberation.
OUR DEMANDS:
Reproductive Justice for All
Free contraception and birth control for all who want it, provided by the state
Free fertility treatment for all
Free abortion on demand

Affordable representation of disabled people within family courts
Protection and expansion of the legal rights of disabled parents regarding guardianship
Paid parental leave for all people
Universal child care, elder care, and pre-kindergarten

End Employment and Housing Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression
Enact federal and state anti-discrimination laws, including passage of ENDA and the Equality Act, as well as the addition of “sexual orientation, gender identity and expression” as a protected category in all human rights laws
Require “just cause” for evicting someone from housing or terminating employment
Enhance and strengthen equal pay guarantees, including by requiring the EEOC to resume collecting pay data from large employers, forbidding prior salary from being considered in setting pay rates, and increasing transparency and protections for workers discussing their own pay
Housing for all and a universal ban on housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
End Anti-Queer Violence
The establishment of community-based response systems to transphobic and homophobic violence, especially violence targeting black trans women, that is entirely separated from the police and criminal law system

Allow transgender prisoners to be housed in facilities reflecting their gender identities

Prioritize funding for health centers that provide transgender healthcare, especially in rural and conservative areas, on reservations, and in underserved urban areas
Guarantee that transition-related healthcare, including HRT and surgery, to all incarcerated people who request it
End gender restrictions in insurance coverage, such as the practice of only covering contraceptive costs for women, and demand healthcare tailored to our actual bodies rather than our ID cards
End gendered restrictions on medical care, including but not limited to services available to sexual assault survivors
End the Repression of Sex Workers and Fully Decriminalize Sex Work Nationwide
Repeal FOSTA/SESTA
Increase consideration of the intersection of disability and sex work and provision of specic resources for disabled sex workers

End conversion therapy and provide stronger supportive care for minors whose families abandon them
Grant all privileges afforded to married couples to all consenting partnerships
Eliminate the nancial and healthcare barriers for disabled people to marry freely

Biden has been around the track a couple of times and knows exactly what he is doing. He realizes that the electorate is more conservative than progressives would like it to be and he needs a lot of votes from people who are not progressive, especially Black and Latino voters, many of whom are fairly conservative, actually. Biden is also a practicing Catholic and he has never been at ease discussing abortion at any time during his long career.... Biden only became fully pro-choice during the 2020 campaign. Biden's campaign staff is pushing the idea of "actions speak louder than words." As president, he has worked to expand access to abortion and his recent budget has language to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which would allow federal funds to be used for abortion. Biden also knows that progressives have nowhere else to go. Sure, they could vote for Jill Stein or Cornel West, elect Donald Trump, and then cry in their wine when he signed a bill to ban all abortions nationwide. Biden knows that very few of them will take the risk.

Fact-Checkers Say 'No One Supports Abortion Up Until Birth.' These Prominent Democrats Disagree.
During and after the first Republican presidential debate on Wednesday, fact-checkers rushed to debunk candidates' criticisms of Democratic support for unlimited abortion access. But it was the journalists who got it wrong.
"What the Democrats are trying to do on this issue is wrong, to allow abortion all the way up to the moment of birth," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during the debate. Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson made similar comments.
The fact checkers: The New York Times and FactCheck.org declared the Republicans' remarks "misleading," while Reuters said the candidates were "missing context." PolitiFact said the statements were "false," and HuffPost deemed them "misinformation." The Washington Post claimed the "common Republican talking point" is untrue because such procedures are "rare." Rolling Stone outright accused the candidates of lying.
Jen Psaki, an MSNBC host and former press secretary for President Joe Biden, tweeted during the debate, "No one supports abortion up until birth."
The facts: The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives in 2021 passed a bill, backed by Biden, to allow abortion up to birth nationwide if "continuation of the pregnancy would pose a risk to the pregnant patient's life or health." Seven states and the District of Columbia already put no limits on abortion. Others, such as New York and California, guarantee abortion access throughout pregnancy if the mother's health, broadly defined, is at risk.
The Democratic Party platform reads: "Democrats oppose and will fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers to reproductive health and rights. We will repeal the Hyde Amendment, and protect and codify the right to reproductive freedom." The Hyde Amendment bars federal funding of most abortions.
Meanwhile, prominent Democrats across the country have often openly advocated unlimited abortion rights, or at least refused to endorse any restrictions.

Free abortion on demand without apology.
Wine purple text on double layer white muslin. The edges are not sealed and are intended to fray
50% of pretax, preshipping price will be donated to Yellowhammer Abortion Fund in Alabama. At the 2018 midterms, Alabama adopted an amendment outlawing abortion if Roe v Wade is overturned. This was followed in May 2019 with criminal punishment for people who perform or facilitate abortions.
That is exactly what Yellowhammer does. They fund medication and procedures directly and help when they can some related costs, like travel and hotel.
People have always needed and will always need abortions. We have always had and will have abortions. Support access to free, safe reproductive care in a state with only three clinics.

“In 2011 I founded the Repeal Hyde Art Project to use art as a tool to create dialogue and awareness about abortion access and interconnected issues. It stemmed from a desire to want to talk more about the Hyde Amendment (which prohibits people from being able to use Medicaid to pay for abortions) and abortion in a way that honored people’s experiences and that invited participation and conversation.” Megan Smith is our second Feminist Mover Maker & Shaker! We are witnessing the whitewashing of Joe Biden’s immigration policy in real time.
Does anyone else remember these headlines?
Tumblr media
Joe Biden literally fought to keep Trump’s racist Title 42 policy.
Tumblr media
Biden FINALLY wants to repeal it now, and that’s a good thing, but remember - instead of allowing Title 42 to expire, Joe Biden literally went to court to continue using it. Funny how that part of the story keeps getting omitted
Tumblr media
And now, the story being reported is, Trump appointed judges are blocking poor old President Biden, who only ever wanted to repeal the racist immigration policy. ☹️
I want Title 42 repealed too, but unlike Joe Biden, I have never ever supported it.
That’s the problem with centrism and neoliberalism. It’s situational morality, at best. Biden supported the Hyde Amendment before he opposed it—all the way up until June 2019. Biden was against the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate, until opposing it became too unpopular. Biden opposed school desegregation, until that stance was seen as patently racist ……
Biden isn’t the hero here. He could have just let Trump’s racist Title 42 die. Nobody forced him to renew it and use it against Haitian refugees and asylum seekers. Please remember that.
Like, yeah, ofc I want Trump and Republicans gone as much as the next sane Black man. But damn. Can we pretty please stop painting the letter “D” on “moderate” Republicans and tryna pawn them off as “progressives”? Can we stop acting like prior support of conservatism doesn’t always always always come back to bite us in the ass?? Can we stop rewarding conservative Democrats for finally coming up with the correct test answer literally years after the final exam? Can we try to do that? Please?
So yeah, do your thing in November: PLEASE get as many Republicans out of office as possible—but ffs, do not replace them with centrists who once ardently supported the harmful, racist ideologies of Republicans.
Anyway, the next time you hear NPR, MSNBC or CNN framing it as Biden has always been against Title 42, just remember that’s a big ass lie.

It's truly impressive how Democratic voters are always frothing at the mouth to blame Joe Biden and Democratic leadership for things that aren't their fault like it's no wonder Republicans are better at winning close elections, we have no party loyalty while they have it in spades.
Case in point, the replies and quote tweets to this tweet are completely braindead.
Tumblr media
I'm just low key in awe that the FDA going "Doctors can't prescribe abortion pills to people who aren't pregnant" is somehow Joe Biden's fault! The FDA and other federal agencies don't actually have to listen to the White House. Just look at how ICE constantly goes rogue, fully ignoring Biden's executive orders.
It's not Joe Biden and elected Democrats' fault that the Hyde Amendment exists and can't be repealed, and that stockpiling controlled substances is a very bad idea and can have devastating consequences!

Biden announced that the US would be stationing more troops in Europe, and creating a permanent base in Poland. Currently about 40K NATO troops are battle ready, and the plan is next year to have 300K. Turkey lifted its veto on Finland and Sweden joining NATO, effectively ensuring their admission. A poll of Ukrainians found they would reject a peace deal with Russia if that meant ceding the land that was lost. Russia and the Ukraine agreed to a very large prisoner swap.
Former top aide to Trump's Chief of Staff, Hutchinson, testified yesterday before the January 6th hearing. Most importantly she claimed that Trump was aware the rioters were armed but wanted them to go anyway, and that he did not want to make an announcement to leave after rioters had entered inside.
The Supreme Court issued more rulings, the most impactful of which is Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta. Back in 2020 the Supreme Court ruled that about half of Oklahoma is actually under the jurisdiction of Native Americans, which means only tribal or federal courts can prosecute people. With Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta, the Supreme Court decided the state can prosecute non-Native Americans defendants who commit crimes on reservations.
Three noteworthy sentencings: Salah Abdeslam and Mohamed Abrini received life in prison for their participation in the 2015 terrorist attacks in France that killed 150, which is rare in the French judicial system. Eighteen others received long sentences as well (although many were in absentia). Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted for helping Jeffrey Epstein acquire girls, was given 20 years. The rapper R. Kelly got 30 years for sex trafficking.
A court ordered hedge fund Three Arrows Capital to liquidate after it was unable to pay its debts due to the crypto market collapsing.
About twenty people were found dead in Libya. It's believed they were trying to get to Europe but died of dehydration trying to cross the desert.

Someone asked me to discuss Warren and AOC’s propositions for the Supreme Court. Some of what I’m going to say below are purely my opinions, and please bear in mind I’m just a person whose hobby is to read newspapers all day with no practical experience in political matters:
Fire a judge who said they wouldn’t overturn Roe v. Wade during confirmation hearings: It’s a similar process to the president, with the House first impeaching and then the trial in the Senate. The Democrats have the numbers, but given that only one justice has ever been impeached back in the 1800s and then the Senate acquitted him, it would be a significant hurdle, especially during midterm elections.
Limit the terms of judges: Life term is in the constitution, so it would need an amendment and would be pretty much impossible.
Put clinics on federal land: I think it technically could be possible. There’s something called the Hyde Amendment that prohibits federal funds for abortions except to save the life of the mother, but I don’t think there’s anything stopping the leasing to private clinics. However it would be a short-term solution because you just need a pro-life president and that could go away.
Repeal the Hyde Amendment: I believe this is more feasible option because again the Democrats have the numbers.
Expand the Supreme Court: Technically possible since membership numbers are by federal law, but it’s a terrible, short-sighted idea. What one must always ask is, what happens if the other side is in power? We’ve had nine justices since 1869, so it’s somewhat sacrosanct. If you decide to cross the line and say you can add justices whenever they make a decision you don’t agree with, then the other side will do it as well. This example wouldn’t happen because it was 2015 under Obama, but imagine if Republicans decided to add two more conservative judges because they didn’t like the gay marriage ruling. Wouldn’t that be insane? Wouldn’t Democrats be screaming about how unjust that is? Why open the door to that situation? In twenty years we may end up with seventeen justices from a tit-for-tat war.
End the filibuster in the Senate because Republicans are using it to stop anything assisting abortion: Sure, but how? Neither the White House nor the House have any power in that and it’s only up to the Senate to set its rules. Considering you need I believe two-thirds to change it and it’s helping the Republicans right now, then that’s not happening. For more info, the Brookings Institute made a helpful page about it here.
Codify right to abortions, same-sex marriage, right to contraception, and interracial marriage so it’s not hinging on Supreme Court decisions: If you can pass those, depending how they’re written. They’d also have to go through fast before the midterm elections and the Senate is literally 50-50 right now.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but unless the Hyde Amendment is repealed, abortion is one big item/issue that can’t be covered. I know Warren specifically brought up repealing it as part of her healthcare plan, but that (and birth control, which isn’t may not be totally banned but was/is still a fight) is one of the big reasons I don’t want healthcare exclusively from the government—there’s no guarantee conservatives won’t take power again
rizzzzzzzzzzzahhhhmeddddddd
@uncahier That’s a really good point! What happens if Republicans gain the majority and repeal the system, or appoint people that are conservative. I wonder what guarantee would be created. Would it have to be a bipartisan group? How would you ensure that?
The M4A bill says
SEC. 104. NON-DISCRIMINATION.
(a) In General.—No person shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex, including sex stereotyping, gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy and related medical conditions (including termination of pregnancy), be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination by any participating provider as defined in section 301, or any entity conducting, administering, or funding a health program or activity, including contracts of insurance, pursuant to this Act.
and that the benefits covered under the universal Medicare system include
(7) Comprehensive reproductive, maternity, and newborn care.
which to me would include abortion?
I feel like repealing the Hyde Amendment would be one of the associated pieces of legislation, or at least would have to be.
I think the points that you both bring up are ones that tend to get overlooked - I think there’s an assumption that it’s so popular and wide-ranging that people wouldn’t mess with it, or that it’d be so entrenched they couldn’t, and I don’t think either of those things are true.
Especially since, per the M4A bill, it would fall under HHS and the Secretary of HHS, along with the other department officials.
And I would point to the NHS and other countries where conservatives come into power and chip away and make changes and empower corporations - and those aren’t anywhere nearly as centralized and comprehensive as this would be.
