I don't know if anyone is going to be interested in this, but I am trying to create my own personalized universe/continuity/series out of DC because their modern media does nothing but depress and torment me. This is my universe's version of The Ray. I don't know if anyone on here is going to like my take on him.
My universe exists in defiance of any and all Crisis events. It takes place after whatever the final event before DC's (hypothetical) bankruptcy is, so my universe is literally immune from ever being retconned/rebooted/erased by any crisis events.

LGBTQIA+ characters in DC Comics
These are characters who have first appeared or been revealed as LGBTQIA+ over the last year, or whom I’ve recently learned about or whom I hadn’t mentioned in previous posts of this type (though I may have featured them on my old blog). As usual, this list is highly arbitrary and incomplete.
(Yeah, I know DC Comics isn’t the only game in town, but for the time being it’s the only one I regularly read, so…)
Obsidian (Todd Rice) [he/him; gay]
Porcelain (Kani/Kevin) [they/them; bi, genderfluid]
the Question (Renee Montoya) [she/her; lesbian]
the Ray (Raymond “Ray” Terrill) [he/him; gay]
Sarah Rainmaker [she/her; lesbian]
Scandal Savage [she/her; lesbian]
Starman (Mikaal Tomas) [he/him; bi]
Steel (Natasha Irons) [she/her; lesbian] & Traci 13 [she/her; bi]
Stitch [they/them; non-binary]
Continuing the tradition from my old blog (which has been unceremoniously deleted by tumblr without much of an explanation why) I’m doing daily posts during June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride by showcasing openly LGBTQIA+ celebrities and various content about or created by LGBTQIA+ people such as music videos, characters on TV shows, movie trailers, …

The choice of Joshua Terrill's name is interesting. Joshua is (and was in the mid-1990s when The Ray was written) a very common name. But it wasn't so much in 1946 when the character was born. It ranked 608 in popularity that year. If he has an uncommon name in his own time, it's for a reason.
Due to time-travel shenanigans, Ray ends up meeting his father as a young man in 1941, around the time he acquired his powers, and has to try to keep him reined in when Happy develops an extreme case of hubris (Ray has to tell him point-blank that he is not God. repeatedly.). But the pride never fully goes away, and after Ray returns to his own time, Happy is left with the knowledge that he will eventually father a son who will become an even more powerful hero than himself--or as he puts it, "such a noble and heroic boy would some day come from my loins--follow in my footsteps." It's all very self-aggrandizing.
So he's not surprised that he and his first wife have a son right after the war--surely this is the future great hero upon whom all expectations must be placed. So why the name Joshua? Well, it means "God is salvation." This is the child "born with the light," the boy who is supposed to save the world, son of a man with a God complex. (Note also what name Joshua becomes when translated into the Greek.) The name is a further reflection of the father's hubris.
But of course poor Joshua doesn't live up to expectations and must be discarded.
So with the next son, Happy chooses a name with the legacy expectation directly in it--Raymond (meaning "counsel protection"), son of the Ray. The expectations are not just implicit now; they're tied to this child's identity whether he likes it or not.
#comicsposting again#JT: a little short for a 50-year-old#HT: you just can't stop lying can you?#RT: born with the light#the religious connections were definitely intentional#another time I'd like to address the role of religion in this series#not something you often get in comics and it's not a *central* theme in this case but it's there#the Terrills are very clearly Catholic#both Ray and his father use the imagery of baptism to describe the first activation of their light-based powers etc. etc.

Freedom Fighters:
Many Golden Age sidekicks have jumped forward in time. Michael Holt (Mister Terrific) has taken it upon himself to set up the unclaimed teens at a metahuman friendly boarding school, Charlton Academy, where they'll mix it up with modern age youths. They'll rediscover the drag that is school, and, eventually commit to fighting for the freedom of today's future. Hijinks ensue.
