Mystery/Thriller Monday

Please be warned, this is not a short book. (460+ pages). But, it is quite the thriller (not surprising since Khoury has brought us The Last Templar series as well as books like Rasputin’s Shadow and The Sanctuary.

Grace Logan is in Antarctica reporting on the breakup of the continent’s ice shelf. They wind up filming an amazingly bright sphere in the sky. No one knows what it is. Then, the same sort of symbol/sphere appears over the Arctic as well. Meanwhile, in Egypt, a bunch of Catholic Coptic priests in Egypt connect these events to another priest who saw the same symbol.

There are the usual interesting twists about the who and the what of all the supernaturalish stuff. If you like fiction with Secret Societies this is definitely the book for you too. It’s very reminiscent of the SIGMA series by James Rollins, just, it’s a one off.

And, I will say that while it was a great read. The descriptions of Boston and the Seaport area were just okay, and then Woburn. Yeah, when the book was in Woburn, that did not ring true to me at all unfortunately. But, then again. I am a stickler for doing Massachusetts locations correctly, so, if you’re from the other 49 states or 5 territories (or another country entirely) you’ll be good to go!

Empire of Lies - Raymond Khoury

Okay so this a great alternate history, time travel, enemy of the state thriller. The premise being that the Ottoman Empire conquered Europe with the help of a time traveller. So we start in Ottoman Paris in 2017. It's kind of drab and really repressive. But this is a contrast the author was purposely trying to make. The basic premise missed by the guy who changed history is that people will always rise up against a dictator (eventually). After time travel is revealed as possible the Imperial Ottoman security apparatus goes into full "kill everyone who knows" mode. There's a lot of action in this book, a lot of desperate "we don't have weapons" punch ups. It's brutal, but that is kind of a tone in this book. I really liked the world presented here. It was kind of interesting to see a united Europe. An Ottoman Europe was really interesting. Although the idea that it would have chugged along peacefully for like 300+ years with no upheavals against Imperial rule is kind of hard to believe. Actually the author does address this, and while the explanation is plausible for the world, I'm still not buying. Ottoman Europe is just a long history of stagnation here. I'm not a fan, but I don't know enough to say whether or not that's, ummm lol, "realistic." The plot is great and I felt the pacing was good as well. I liked the main character the most, supporting characters less so. I'm not exactly sure why, but the main character is that action movie star character for sure, and I enjoy that. It's entertaining to me. At the end of the book the author presents some interesting views on our own world, to contrast with the Ottoman Europe world, that I feel are very in the mark. This made me realize how much commentary the author had put into the book. It was a lot. It's kind of funny that I was so caught up with the plot that only in hindsight did I see it.
