Global Leigh Syndrome Treatment market is Estimated to Witness High Growth Owing to Increasing Disease Awareness
Tumblr media
The global Leigh syndrome treatment market is expected to exhibit significant growth due to rising prevalence of the rare genetic disorder. Leigh syndrome is a rare and aggressive neurological disorder caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA or nuclear genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and respiration. The characteristic symptoms of Leigh syndrome include developmental delay, loss of motor skills, weakness, vision problems, and respiratory issues. Currently, there is no definitive treatment for Leigh syndrome. Treatments mainly focus on managing symptoms by targeting the underlying cause. Therapies primarily include vitamin and nutritional supplements, physical and occupational therapy, and medications targeting respiratory and neurological complications.
The global Leigh syndrome treatment market is estimated to be valued at US$ 272.9 million  in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 6.7% over the forecast period from 2024 to 2031. Key Takeaways Key players operating in the Global Leigh Syndrome Treatment Market Growth are Abliva AB, PTC Therapeutics, VAKS Pharma, MITOCH, Medley Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Khondrion BV, OMEICOS THERAPEUTICS GMBH. , Edison Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. Ltd., Taysha GTx, PicnicHealth (AllStripes), Takeda Pharmaceutical Company , Biogen, Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc., and MECOSON LABS PRIVATE LIMITED. The global Leigh syndrome treatment market is expected to witness lucrative growth opportunities due to increasing research funding for rare disease drug development and growing orphan drug designations. Furthermore, advancements in understanding the genetics and underlying mechanisms of Leigh syndrome are likely to aid the development of novel targeted treatment options. Key players are actively focusing on expanding their geographical presence through collaborations and partnerships with regional healthcare providers to cater to the growing patient population worldwide. For instance, in 2021, Khondrion partnered with Taysha Gene Therapies to accelerate the clinical development of KH-176, a gene therapy drug candidate for Leigh syndrome. Market Drivers The primary driver propelling the global Leigh syndrome treatment market growth is increasing disease awareness driven by advocacy programs by patient support groups such as United Leukodystrophy Foundation and Cure Sanfilippo Foundation. Growing government efforts to provide orphan drug incentives and streamline the approval process for rare disease drug candidates are also expected to encourage pharmaceutical companies to invest in Leigh syndrome drug R&D.

"The Biden Administration last week [early December, 2023] announced it would be seizing patents for drugs and drug manufacturing procedures developed using government money.
A draft of the new law, seen by Reuters, said that the government will consider various factors including whether a medical situation is leading to increased prices of the drug at any given time, or whether only a small section of Americans can afford it.
The new executive order is the first exercise in what is called “march-in-rights” which allows relevant government agencies to redistribute patents if they were generated under government funding. The NIH has long maintained march-in-rights, but previous directors have been unwilling to use them, fearing consequences.
“We’ll make it clear that when drug companies won’t sell taxpayer funded drugs at reasonable prices, we will be prepared to allow other companies to provide those drugs for less,” White House adviser Lael Brainard said on a press call.
But just how much taxpayer money is going toward funding drugs? A research paper from the Insitute for New Economic Thought showed that “NIH funding contributed to research associated with every new drug approved from 2010-2019, totaling $230 billion.”
The authors of the paper continue, writing “NIH funding also produced 22 thousand patents, which provided marketing exclusivity for 27 (8.6%) of the drugs approved [between] 2010-2019.”
How we do drug discovery and production in America has a number of fundamental flaws that have created problems in the health service industry.
It costs billions of dollars and sometimes as many as 5 to 10 years to bring a drug to market in the US, which means that only companies with massive financial muscle can do so with any regularity, and that smaller, more innovative companies can’t compete with these pharma giants.
This also means that if a company can’t recoup that loss, a single failed drug can result in massive disruptions to business. To protect themselves, pharmaceutical companies establish piles of patents on drugs and drug manufacturing procedures. Especially if the drug in question treats a rare or obscure disease, these patents essentially ensure the company has monoselective pricing regimes.
However, if a company can convince the NIH that a particular drug should be considered a public health priority, they can be almost entirely funded by the government, as the research paper showed.
Some market participants, in this case the famous billionaire investor Mark Cuban, have attempted to remedy the issue of drug costs in America by manufacturing generic versions of patented drugs sold for common diseases."

For @shanastoryteller who asked for the gut bacteria expert's* recipe:
The professor's green energy smoothie
Ingredients
(two servings, according to the original)
half an avocado
half an apple
the juice from half a squeezed lemon
1 pinch fresh ginger
10 grapes or half a kiwi
5 dried walnuts
1 sheet nori (the kind used for sushi)
4 bunches of spinach
1 bunch parsley
a handful of broccoli
a handful of bean sprouts
half a glass of herbal tea
Preparation
Prepare the vegetables and fruits by removing the core from the apple, the peel from the kiwi, etc.
Put the vegetables in the blender with the herbal tea (cooled) and blend until it becomes a very fine-grained, green and fragrant smoothie.
Garnish with fresh herbs according to your taste preferences.
From https://livsstil.tv2.dk/mad/opskrift/professorens-groenne-energigroed (translation: https://livsstil-tv2-dk.translate.goog/mad/opskrift/professorens-groenne-energigroed?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=da)
My tips
The taste is pretty neutral (YMMV) but if you substitute ingredients, it may affect the taste - cabbages in particular
I usually double the recipe and have it over two days - I can't be bothered to keep half an apple lying around
I use a tall container with a volume of 1,6L/3.4 pint - that's on the small side for my version
I wouldn't make bigger portions than can be eaten over two days, and unless consumed straight away it must be kept in the fridge - you're risking a bacteria bomb instead of a nice smoothie...
I rarely use lemon, but use a few good slices of ginger (peel the whole chunk, slice and freeze for less fuss)
If you live near an Asian market, they probably have bigger packs of nori. I buy one with 50 sheets - it's *much* cheaper per sheet than the supermarket's price
I skip the parsley (can't be bothered) and buy chopped (see next bullet point) frozen spinach and add to taste
Instead of broccoli (expensive; doesn't last long in the fridge) I buy whatever cabbage is cheapest and use a large handful of it chopped up some (the fibres in cabbage and whole spinach leaves does not play well with my blender - YMMV)
I use a large mug of herbal tea and add psyllium husk for more fibre
In general I substitute/add veggies/fruits if I have something going a bit overripe (buying a load of bananas cheap and freezing them if they go brown before eating: also great for this); if I'm out of grapes, I add raisins ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
IIRC he's a proponent of using organic prooduce. As you can tell from my notes I'm cheap and/or poor cost conscious, so I buy the cheapest. It's up to you :)
I eat this in addition to whatever fruits&vegs I usually have - it's an easy way to up my intake and get some things I don't eat a lot of (e.g. cabbage, spinach)
I make my own beansprouts - but this is already too long, so it's in the next post
*Oluf Borbye Pedersen - from the link:
Intestinal Microbiome Research OP is a leading partner in the EU-Metahit initiative (www.metahit.eu) which delivered the first and second gut microbial gene catalogue of 3.3 and 9.9 mio microbial genes, respectively, from the human intestinal tract.  With quantitative metagenomics he and his team demonstrated in a population sample that about a fourth of adults is markedly deficient in gut microbiota diversity. The same individuals were featured by insulin resistance, overweight, dyslipidaemia and proinflammation. OP et al. reported the first quantitative metagenomics study of gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes, prediabetics and women with gestational diabetes and they discovered a new biological fingerprint, gut enterotypes of the human host. In addition, in recent studies of the human gut microbiome, Pedersen and colleagues have teased out drug effects versus disease effects on gut bacteria composition and function. Recently, they reported the first example of gut microbes linked to human insulin resistance. Mechanistically the investigators extended and validated their findings in in rodents. The Pedersen team has done several interventions targeting the human gut microbiome and blood metabolome including the impact of broad-spectrum antibiotics and of dietary gluten content, respectively. Studies that influence dietary and medical practice.

A DC X DP IDEA #34
Do cry me a river
Imagine dis…
I re-watched some of my favorite anime when I was a kid and… Another idea popped up if I do say so myself.
If the words Yukina and Ice Maiden ring a bell then you know which direction I am heading…
Deep within Gotham, specifically, its underground city seems to be buzzing with intrigue and curiosity at something new. Now, when something new has appeared all of them are watching, as if it was not the usual drug or weaponry to use on the other heroes. All eyes were on them, each turn and each step this new player had brought into the game were all being watched and carefully cataloged.
But the moment it had proved its worth each and everyone, from the big names and players of the underground that stretches from Gotham to its neighboring cities to all those who had a single line of connection to the underground. All began clamoring to buy and claim such precious little things.
All of them began to whisper among the shadows and had all of them in traded hushed tones in fear of the Bats who may have or have not been listening.
Let me tell you… It wasn’t any ordinary rumors, but it was all because of a new production of pearls. Pearls, strange and enchanting pearls, that glowed with an otherworldly greenish blue hue. Unlike the typical black, white, pink, and rare blue pearls that adorned the necks of Gotham’s elite and the rich, these are not only rare, mysterious, and sought after not for their beauty but for the miracles they had performed.
These pearls were said to have amazing therapeutic abilities. Stories circulated about wounds healing in seconds, incurable diseases disappearing, and organs regenerating as if by magic. The pearls' magical qualities increased their value to astronomical levels, making them a sought-after treasure on the illicit market. Wealthy collectors and desperate folks were both eager to pay for everything to obtain them.
But despite their efforts to be quiet some noise and rumors had already reached the ears of Gotham’s vigilantes.
Gotham vigilantes had already heard of these new pearls slowly circulating in the underground world. Batman had it at the end of his priority as it was just a gemstone and in some cases had his attention, Red Hood didn’t even bother as it was not drugs and thought of it as another rich eccentric trend that soon to fade, so did the rest of the vigilantes dismissing them without a second thought.
One evening, Red Robin was on his usual patrol, this night his patrol route was line on keeping an eye out for the upper echelons of Gotham’s elite as there had been a massive Arkham breakout meaning that the rich were out for grabs for the usual kidnapping and ransom.
He intercepted a poor attempt at a robbery between a wealthy civilian, their bag had released all of its contents in a fit of panic. Red Robin helped the said civilian to gather their things all up after he had tied the robber with some zip-ties. As he was gathering their things he picked up a unique-looking necklace. A simple silver necklace with a singular greenish-blue pearl in its center. The unusual color caught his attention but never thought any of it until tomorrow morning.
The next morning, As Tim was dressing up for his morning job as the CEO of Wayne Enterprise, he noticed something peculiar. The scar from his missing spleen, a constant reminder of a near-fatal injury, and another reminder that Ra is a creep for stealing a minor’s spleen had vanished. Alarmed and more awake than seconds ago, he hurriedly went to Dr. Leslie’s clinic for an impromptu check-up. The X-rays revealed the impossible, his spleen had regenerated as if it had never been missing in the first place.
The Bats are now scrambling for any information about the mysterious pearl that Red Robin had contact with just last night.
Meanwhile, Danny was imprisoned in a remote, strongly fortified manor. Unlike Yukina from Yuyu Hakusho, Danny's tears transformed into a powerful healing agent capable of miraculous recoveries.
This wealthy captor, who had been a player in the underground for quite some time yet always had the ambition to be more than just a buyer, when he became aware of Danny's existence and his tears' healing abilities, had been exploiting him to create the greenish-blue pearls that were now circulating in the black market.
Danny was not alone in captivity. He was accompanied by his younger, de-aged self, Dan and Ellie. Both had been captured and used as leverage to compel Danny's cooperation. The three were confined in separate, high-security quarters that were closely monitored and strongly guarded.
As chaos is slowly filling up the streets of Gotham, at the edge of the city’s border there stood a woman with a purpose.
Talia al Ghul, the Demon Head's daughter and mother of Damian Al Ghul-Wayne, commonly known as Robin, is well-known for her strategic abilities. She embarked on a personal mission to protect and save her son Danny from the pig who dared to hurt him.
Danny, Talia and Bruce's first kid had been hidden from the world, even her father, for his safety. Safety? She felt selfish for the first time, keeping Danny concealed from everyone except her. Talia had decided to keep him concealed, including from his brother, Damian.
Talia had lately received an unusual package—a VHS video with a green sticky note bearing the letters "CW." The film contained a warning and a guide, as well as critical information about the forces that had kidnapped her son and instructions on how to exploit something she had never seen before.
The tape revealed Danny's captor's identity, a wealthy and powerful figure deep within Gotham's underbelly who had discovered Danny's new powers and was forcing him to create healing pearls. The video also contained plans and security information about Danny's detention facility, as well as the network of individuals involved in this nefarious enterprise.
Talia devised a strategy based on the tape's information, contacting trusted allies and resources while also depending on her network and the element of surprise. Talia walks through the city like a ghost, her love for Danny so strong and unwavering that she is willing to eliminate anyone who endangers her son's safety.
PS: If someone out there wants to continue or make a fic about this you are free to do so, don’t forget to tag me though.
PPS: This one is for the month of August since I’m going to be a bit busy so ENJOY!!!

The question of whether your government has the will or the ability (the desire) to strictly define boundaries was answered in the spring of 2020. The market test that followed framed a series of restrictions pursued in some locales with militant enthusiasm for a number of years. It did not limit itself by age, race, sex, or origin. There was no shortage of reasoning or justification for any or all of it, no matter how absurd or contrary. So Yes, the government, from top to bottom, is more than able to define constraints and, even under the most ridiculous of circumstances, enforce them.
With that as the foundation, what, then, is the deal with unrestricted immigration?
Why?
Without taking up any ideological tropes (or trying not to do that), what is the point of this open border policy? Why is it being allowed? Democrat mayors and governors long ago said their sanctuaries were bursting, more than filled to capacity. Inner-city residents are seeking redress for the strains the swarms of new arrivals have placed on their communities. The volume has more than exceeded any argument that we need cheap labor (which is undercutting low and unskilled Americans’ pay and opportunities in a down economy). Financially demanding school districts are screaming for more money as they attempt to accommodate a multi-national army of non-English speaking children who lack even basic skills (or any concept of the culture of schools and learning). Taxpayers, in a remarkably shitty inflationary economy, are supposed to part with more dollars to house, feed, cloth, and train significant numbers who appear to have no interest in assimilating. And we would be naive to believe that 1) our enemies are not using this influx to their advantage; 2) that what we’re doing is better for anyone, especially the new arrivals; and 3) that it is advantageous to dump millions of people with no connection to our history or culture (and often little connection or desire to cohabitate with each other) wherever we can find room. And they are still pouring in.
Yes, one could make the argument that the response to COVID was based on the presumption that there was a public health interest, but unvaccinated illegals were piling into America throughout the pandemic – and not just carrying COVID. We have seen the rise and or spike in illness and disease once rare and most certainly carried here from the third world as a product of open-border policy. Drugs, gangs, crime, and overdoses rise exponentially in parallel to the increase in illegal entrants. All of these present a public health threat, none of which inspires the sort of draconian control exercised upon actual Americans under the premise that it would slow or stop the spread of an airborne virus.

Resident Evil AU/original location
What if the Metamycete in Romania and its spinoff in Dulvey wasn't the only humungous fungus around? What if there was another one, in, say, Eastern Oregon? Sort of like a bioweapon version of this:
The major difference in my AU from "just another RE game" is that Metamycetes as a whole tend to amplify and echo the prevalent emotions of the people attuned to it, while granting them immortality. The Romanian fungus is attuned to a sociopath driven mad by grief who's been packing the fungus to bursting with terror, pain, suffering, and anguish for 100 years straight, and the Dulvey spinoff of that fungus is attuned to a mentally unstable and incredibly traumatized child who has never known kindness in her entire life and is so desperate for human contact that she'll brainwash people into being her new family. It's like programming: Garbage In, Garbage Out.
The other fungus, located in and around the fictional town of Devil's Butte, Oregon, isn't like that. Mayor Malder has been very careful to do the exact opposite and ensure the townspeople are doing well emotionally and financially. The town is prospering in a way that small, non-tourist-trappy towns in the United States in the early 21st century generally aren't. As a result, the Mold is healthy (it's colored white instead of black), and Devil's Butte is a pocket of the sort of Norman Rockwell small-town Americana that doesn't exist anymore, with some modern Oregon tweaks like liberalism, racial diversity (to the best of their ability, it's still rural Oregon), legalized weed, and gay marriage.
Mayor Malder, although perpetually the incumbent, has made it his mission to improve on his previous term, every term he serves. How long has he been doing this? He first ran in 1896, went through a stress-induced breakdown, ran off into the woods, encountered the Pale God (the good opposite of the Black God from RE: Village) who gave him immortality and a pep talk, and proceeded to turn the town around. He's got three forms: normal old man (his default form for all public appearances), "Mother Miranda but male and with doves instead of crows" (very rarely used), and "OH MY GOD A BIBLICALLY ACCURATE ANGEL" (never used before, God willing it never will be, because that's the "We're Being Invaded" body).
He also has a Cabinet of people he's given abilities to via the Mold, something that healthy Mold can do naturally and on command but that The Connections crudely modified Eveline's mold to do via disease-like infection and that Mother Miranda had to brute-force via cadou.
His Cabinet includes, but isn't limited to:
Sunshine Daniels, an ex-hippie lady turned weed grower. Producer of the highly-sought-after, Mold-altered strain "The Goodest Shit", which isn't moldy itself per se, but has been modified via the Mold's gene-altering properties to give a longer and stronger high than anything else on the market. Ms. Daniels met the Mayor in the mid to late 70s as the hippie movement was starting to run out of steam, and started her weed-growing career running a small drug empire peddling The Goodest Shit to college students prior to the legalization of weed.
2. Jane Malheur, proprietor of "Jane's Antiques & Curios", an antique store that is rumored to be haunted, and draws tourists in for the creep factor. Jane claims to be the third-generation proprietor of the business, which has been there since the 1890s, but she is Jane I, not Jane III. She has been hiding her immortality from tourists by pretending to be her own granddaughter, who doesn't actually exist. The reason the store is rumored to be haunted is that she used her Mold powers to bring some antique porcelain dolls, other toys, and a vintage department store mannequin to life to help her with the business in her old age. (She was already old when she joined the Cabinet in the 1930s.)
Imagine being a meth addict and breaking into the place at night for cash, and you think there's a person there, counting cash, but you get a good look and there's just a static mannequin. You could have sworn you saw movement though. You look away, and when you look back it isn't there. You whirl around, wondering where the mannequin went, but there's this 50s women's face painted onto a plastic mannequin, with unsettlingly lifelike eyes that you realize aren't painted on at all, leaning in just inches from your face. As you run to get the fuck out of there, antique dolls track your movements with their heads. (Don't worry, they don't hurt anyone, they just like to troll people.)
3. The OG member of the Cabinet and an old fly-fishing buddy of Mayor Malder, an old Southern gentleman named Samuel Clemens. Yes, that Samuel Clemens, the one who's better known by his pen name, Mark Twain. His mold powers allow him to heal any wound instantly, on him or on another Mold-touched individual. Heck, maybe if Ethan Winters swings around town he could get his fingers back! His healing powers are like a more potent and versatile version of Ethan Winters' ability to pour hydrogen peroxide on a severed limb and reattach it, fully functional, in 30 seconds by pressing the stump and the limb together like he's trying to glue something at the arts-and-crafts table. Both Samuel and Ethan's toolkit have one important thing in common, though: G U N
Tumblr media
"Pecker, I just might!"
4. Wally Wyman, owner of the local (small) amusement park, Wally's Wonderland. Wally's Wonderland has a sort of "Babes In Toyland" vibe, lots of nutcracker-type antique toy soldiers and other copyright-friendly symbols of childhood joy. He's also the local mechanic who runs Wally's Garage, and his Mold powers include the ability to imbue Mold consciousness into mechanical items. His car, a 1932 Cord 812, is alive and named Henrietta after Wally's mother. The last time someone tried to steal Henrietta's parts, Wally had to convince her to spit the thief out, as she's got flesh and blood under the upholstery and metal and took offense to a meth addict trying to pull her grille off for the scrap metal value. (She's not like Christine. Although she IS pretty attached to Wally, there's more of a platonic "exasperated middle-aged dad/chaos gremlin nine-year-old girl" kind of relationship between them)
The old animatronics at Wally's Wonderland are also alive, and although locals know they are, they act like cheap, unrealistic animatronics for the tourists who stop for chili dogs, go-kart racing, octopus rides, teacup rides, cotton candy, an arcade so old all its games are now nostalgic and retro (Anyone for a game of Street Fighters I? What about Pong?), and the pride and joy of the park, "Devil's Twister", the only British-style helter-skelter amusement park ride in the United States! (It's a slide. That's what a Helter Skelter is. It's a spiraling slide you go down on a little mat. Also the name of a banger Beatles song!)
There's also the Order Of The Pale God, an honest-to-God 19th century secret society a la the Odd Fellows, which is a syncretic mixture of the normal 19th century secret society occultism and very heavy influences (and membership) from the Northern Paiute tribe of Native Americans, who have lived in the area (and known about the Mold) for millennia. As you can probably expect, they worship the Pale God. They also do soup kitchens, run several nonprofits, and generally do their level best to ensure the vibes in town are as immaculate as possible. It is their duty, and their calling. The Pale God demands His supplicants and denizens be happy and content, for only then can He be happy and content as well. The Head Of The Order is a certain William Pamahas, a half-Northern-Paiute-half-white person who founded the Order all the way back in the 19th century, and has been rewarded by the Pale God with long life.)
I'd imagine this place would send Chris Redfield into conniptions because there is CLEARLY bioweapon activity going on but everyone's OK with it??? And there aren't any mysterious disappearances or confirmed kills???? At all????????
I'd imagine he first gets alerted that orbital bioweapon detector scan things have detected a large accumulation of Metamycete in Oregon, so he investigates the town closest to the center. One of the BSAA interns is actually from Devil's Butte but never figured out anything was amiss when they lived there, and is just like "Damn, Jack Malder is still mayor? Man, he's been mayor for as long as anyone can remember!"
And Chris decides to go investigate in person, gets treated with hostility by everyone in town who's in on the secret and quite a few people who aren't (because ACAB here in Oregon), and gets gaslit by Wally's boys when he pokes around to investigate. Imagine Chris going there and asking questions, and The Boys (as the townsfolk know the animatronics) are trolling him by using their internal Mold reservoirs to make their proportions just slightly off every time Chris looks away: he turns away and as he turns he realizes that the Tin Soldier animatronic is looking right at him with an unsettlingly realistic grin with actual teeth that are too long and too numerous, and then when he double-takes the Soldier's face is normal.
EDIT: Sunshine Daniels has to wear very thick gloves at all times, because her Mold power is that she can give a contact high to anyone she makes skin-to-skin contact with, like through a handshake.
ANOTHER EDIT: The Devil's Twister in Wally's Wonderland has a somewhat tinny PA system which plays "Helter-Skelter" by the Beatles on loop. At the exit of the ride, behind theft-proof bulletproof glass with an honestly comedic amount of locks (most of which are just there for show, it's a couple of expensive German locks that do most of the security), lies Wally's greatest achievement: a binding legal document from Columbia Records giving him rights to use the song on his ride in perpetuity, made possible by writing John Lennon and Paul McCartney a letter back in the 60s, asking if he could use it, and the Beatles thought it was cool that there was a helter-skelter in America so they persuaded the execs to allow it, but only for this one tiny little ride in the middle of nowhere (the execs thought they were so clever)
It's theft-proof because meth heads + out-of-the-way area + signed document bearing the signatures of two of the four Beatles = someone not in their right mind looking at this marvel of achievement of the common man's victory over suits in boardrooms, hands trembling from withdrawal, and seeing nothing but dollar signs.
YET ANOTHER EDIT: The hobo who tried to strip Henrietta for parts was fine, just slightly bruised around the midriff where the hood got him and in desperate need of new pants. The local police are vaguely aware of the whole mold thing, but the general consensus among them
STILL ANOTHER EDIT: The local police are considered A-OK by townsfolk, because they're Good Old Town Boys (And Girls And Nonbinary) and the town's adoption of improved screening has done wonders in ensuring that corrupt psychos never get a badge in HIS town. Devil's Butte PD still do foot patrols, an extreme rarity among post-1950s US police forces, are given (informal) training in de-escalation, and are equipped similarly to 1950s police forces: no tanks and assault rifles to be found, only revolvers and spiffy Norman Rockwell uniforms! (They do have bulletproof vests, though, but they're the subtle kind for under the shirt to decrease intimidation factor without compromising protection.) Furthermore, since the foot patrol beat cops most often have stations and patrols in the neighborhood(s) they live in, this incentivizes good behavior as it would be rather awkward as an off-duty cop talking to your next door neighbor over the fence like a pair of 1950s dads and suddenly having to explain why he saw you taking bribes.
The townsfolk don't like authority figures from outside town, though, as they are keenly aware they've got the singular, only-of-its-kind American police department that actually serves and protects instead of shooting people because acorns fall on the shiny cop cars. The town's general feeling in regards to the feds in general and the BSAA in particular is "Fuck off, we're doing just fine on our own. Glory to the Pale God and contentment be upon us."

First, the DSM lacks an implicit definition of mental health or emotional wellness. Psychoanalytic clinical experience, in contrast, assumes that beyond helping patients to change problematic behaviors and mental states, therapists try to help them to accept themselves with their limitations and to improve their overall resiliency, sense of agency, tolerance of a wide range of thoughts and affects, self-continuity, realistic self-esteem, capacity for intimacy, moral sensibilities, and awareness of others as having separate subjectivities. Because people who lack these capacities can not yet imagine them, such patients rarely complain about their absence; they just want to feel better. They may come for treatment complaining of a specific Axis 1 disorder, but their problems may go far beyond those symptoms.
Second, despite the fact that a sincere effort to increase validity and reliability inspired those: editions, the validity and reliability of the post-1980 DSMs have been disappointing (see Herzig & Licht, 2006). The attempt to redefine psychopathology in ways that facilitate some kinds of research has inadvertently produced descriptions of clinical syndromes that are artificially discrete and fail to capture patients' complex experiences. While the effort to expunge the psychoanalytic bias that pervaded DSM-II is understandable now that other powerful ways to conceptualize psychopathology exist, the deemphasis on the client's subjective experience of symptoms has produced a flat, experience-distant version of mental suffering that represents clinical phenomena about as well as the description of the key, tempo, and length of a musical composition represents the music itself. This critique applies especially to the personality disorders section of the DSM, but it also applies to its treatment of experiences such as anxiety and depression, the diagnosis of which involves externally observable phenomena such as racing heart beat or changes in eating and sleeping patterns rather than whether the anxiety is about separation or annihilation, or the depression is anaclitic or introjective (Blatt, 2004) aspects that are critical to clinical understanding and help.
Third, although the DSM system is often called a "medical model" of psychopathology, no physician would equate the remission of symptoms with the cure of disease. The reification of "disorder" categories, in defiance of much clinical experience, has had significant unintended negative consequences. The assumption that psychological problems are best viewed as discrete symptom syndromes has encouraged insurance firms and governments to specify the lowest common denominator of change and insist that this is all they will cover, even when it is clear that the presenting complaints are the tip of an emotional iceberg that will cause trouble in the future if ignored. The categorical approach has also benefited pharmaceutical companies, who have an interest in an ever-increasing list of discrete "disorders" for which they can market specific drugs.

Dietary supplements for weight loss
Melt your body fat. And lose weight in a natural way. These may be catchy slogans, but are they really yielding results?
It can be difficult to counter the temptation to promise to lose weight quickly. Won't weight loss supplements lose anything but your money? Are these products safe?
Tumblr media
What are supplements?
Dietary supplements are sold as health aids. It is an oral product. Its common components include vitamins, minerals, fiber, caffeine, herbs and other plants.
Some of the most well-known supplements claim to be able to improve nutrition, increase energy level, build muscle, or burn fat.
Supplements are not seen as medications. They are not produced to treat or cure diseases.
How to organize dietary supplements?
Companies that manufacture dietary supplements are responsible for the safety of their products. Such companies must ensure that their products are free of contaminants and labeled with accurate information.
Dietary supplements do not need to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But if the supplement is found to be unsafe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may issue warnings or request that it be withdrawn from the market.
The FDA may take action against companies that publish false or unsubstantiated claims to sell their dietary supplements.
Interpreting Weight Loss Claims
Perhaps it surprises you to learn that supplement makers rarely conduct clinical trials on them. This is part of the reason why there is little scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of supplements in weight loss.
For example, raspberry ketone supplement is marketed as a clinically approved weight-loss product. This claim is supported by one clinical trial.
The trial involved 70 obese adults. And all of them in this experiment underwent a strict diet and training regime. Participants were then randomly divided into two groups, one receiving a placebo and the other receiving a supplement containing raspberry ketone, caffeine, bitter orange extract, ginger and garlic root extract.
The 45 participants in the experiment underweight:
The average weight loss in the supplement group was 4.2 pounds (1.9 kilograms).
The average weight loss in the placebo group was 0.9 pounds (0.4 kilograms).
While these results are interesting, the small size of the trial and its duration of only eight weeks means that the results cannot be reliably generalized in practice. Most importantly, a short trial like this may overlook side effects that only appear after long-term use.
Furthermore, the experiment used a dietary supplement containing many active ingredients. That is why it is impossible to determine which of these components was responsible for weight loss.
Ideally, these preliminary results are tested in much longer trials involving hundreds of participants closely monitored for side effects. The results of such trials would allow for an informed decision as to the safety and efficacy of that product.
Until trial data are available and ready, claims about supplementation and weight loss should be treated with caution.
Understand safety concerns
Just because a product is natural doesn't mean it's necessarily safe. Some supplements are associated with serious problems such as kidney damage, although these accidents are rare.
Supplements may have powerful effects. Ephedra (Ma Huang) was previously used for weight loss. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now blocked it because it is associated with some negative effects such as mood changes, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, stroke, tremor attacks and heart attacks.
Some weight-loss supplements have been shown to contain hidden ingredients, such as prescription drug ingredients, that may have harmful effects.
Search before you buy
If you're considering supplements that help you lose weight, it's important to do your part. Check credible websites, such as those operated by the U.S. Bureau of Dietary Supplements and the National Center for Complementary Medicine and Integrative Health.
Also, be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any dietary supplement. This is especially important if you're having health problems, taking prescription medications, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Key Market Drivers
Rising Drug Development and Outsourcing Trends The global surge in drug development activities, particularly in areas like oncology, immunology, and rare diseases, has significantly boosted the demand for analytical testing services. As drug development becomes more complex, many pharmaceutical companies are increasingly outsourcing these services to specialized laboratories to focus on core research and development (R&D) efforts. This has led to a boom in contract research organizations (CROs) and contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), both of which offer analytical testing as part of their comprehensive services.
Stringent Regulatory Requirements Regulatory bodies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) are enforcing stricter regulations on drug safety and quality. Compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and thorough documentation is now a non-negotiable aspect of pharmaceutical development. As a result, pharmaceutical companies must conduct detailed testing at every stage, from early-stage clinical trials to post-market surveillance, driving the need for advanced analytical testing solutions.
Advancements in Analytical Technologies Technological advancements in testing methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), are transforming the industry. These innovations offer more precise and accurate data, enabling quicker and more cost-effective testing. Furthermore, the integration of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) is further streamlining testing processes, reducing human error, and accelerating drug approvals.
Growing Biopharmaceutical Sector The rise of biologics and biosimilars has added new dimensions to the pharmaceutical industry. Biopharmaceutical products, due to their complex structures, require more sophisticated testing methodologies. Analytical testing for biopharmaceuticals focuses on characterizing the biologic molecule, ensuring stability, and monitoring for any impurities. This shift is creating new opportunities for growth in the analytical testing market.
Increased Focus on Personalized Medicine The pharmaceutical industry is moving towards personalized medicine, where treatments are tailored to individual patient needs. Analytical testing plays a critical role in developing these customized therapies by helping to identify specific biomarkers, measure drug efficacy, and ensure the safety of tailored treatment options.
Market Challenges
High Costs and Time-Consuming Processes While essential, pharmaceutical analytical testing can be a costly and time-intensive process. Developing cutting-edge testing methods and equipment requires significant investment, and maintaining compliance with ever-evolving regulations adds to operational expenses. These factors can pose challenges, particularly for smaller pharmaceutical companies with limited resources.
Complexities of Biosimilar and Biologic Testing Testing biologics and biosimilars is inherently more complex than traditional small-molecule drugs. As biologics are produced using living cells, ensuring consistency, purity, and potency is more difficult, and advanced analytical techniques are required. This increases the demand for specialized expertise, which may not always be readily available.
Future Trends in the Pharmaceutical Analytical Testing Market
Expansion of Testing for Emerging Therapies As the development of cell and gene therapies accelerates, the analytical testing market is poised to expand further. These therapies require innovative testing strategies due to their novel mechanisms of action, which adds another layer of complexity to the analytical process.

Multiple Myeloma: Advancements and Future Outlook in Treatment
Tumblr media
Multiple Myeloma, the second most common form of blood cancer following non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is characterized by the proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. These abnormal cells outnumber healthy blood cells, severely compromising the body's ability to function and fight infections. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical to managing the disease. Multiple Myeloma presents in various forms, including symptomatic (active disease), asymptomatic (smoldering myeloma), solitary plasmacytoma, and rare plasma cell leukemia, each requiring tailored diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Rising Prevalence and Demographic Trends
The prevalence of Multiple Myeloma is rising, especially in the elderly population. The incidence rate is highest among older adults, with over half of the cases diagnosed in males. This demographic shift is influencing the Multiple Myeloma drug, with a greater focus on therapies suited to the aging population.
Current Treatment Options and Therapeutic Innovations
Historically, Multiple Myeloma treatment has centered around chemotherapy, corticosteroids, and stem cell transplantation. However, the treatment landscape has evolved with the introduction of new therapies such as Proteasome Inhibitors, Immunomodulating Agents, Histone Deacetylase (HDAC) Inhibitors, Monoclonal Antibodies, and groundbreaking CAR-T cell therapies.
