Punisher: War Journal - Base #1 portrays the struggles veterans go through
Punisher: War Journal - Base #1 portrays the struggles veterans go through #comics #comicbooks
What most veterans don’t talk about is how hard coming home is. As we are trained to deal with what we have to when we are down range. It is all different  when we have to deal with no apparent treat. As we learn to understand how to adapt to normal life. It is different for each of us. As I have friends who could separate the two and just hold whatever pain they have back from their loved…

Hey did you ever end up posting that yandere plants one with the bee reader and I missied it?? Was looking forward to that one
(I have not. A drable for you, chief)
The queen has requested another harvest.
What impeccable timing.
Climbing from rubble and frayed vines, vegetation and ash falls from your hair and shoulders. Extra care is put into your wings as you brush them off for the flight ahead. Held by a loose spine, you blow the decades of dust off your new find - kicking spray particles into the air. Through water eyes you read the books cover - fuzzy tension building at the base of your nose.
It's another picture book.
They're going to love this one-
"Ahh... Achoo!... 'Cuse me."
Apologizing to the thin air around you, you unhook the fine straps of your satchel and toss the book inside. You turn your gaze to the hole in the ceiling as your wings flutter, feet kick-starting your ascent as you rise. The mellowed glow of the fog casted sun greets you first as you exit; a jungle of greenery and constructs waiting the earth below and as far as the eye could see. You climb up onto the ledge of the building and leap off into a nose dive for the ground - wings swooping into mobility before your body hits the trees. Flying lose did have its risks, but nothing beats the floral air in your hair when heading home - reminding you of those counting on your return.
Scouting the known galaxy for resources, your crew landed on this planet in a time you no longer recall accurately. Overtaken by plants of all variety, it seemed like the perfect harvest - until it wasn't. As unaccounted cargo, you were sparred the horrors they faced at the hands of the planet's few remaining natives. Asleep during the bloodbath you woke crowd by the new inhabitants of this land - sentient creatures grown from rich soil and crimes against anatomy.
Their creators feared what they had created and went to war destroying what they had birthed with their own hands - wiped out in the end by their superior strengths and numbers. Despite this carnage, they were a peaceful race and tried to rescue your crew, but failed. Finding your journals tucked into your sleeping arms they enlisted your aid as a florist in the upkeep of what remains of their home in exchange for their pollen and a roof over your head.
Base in sight, you speed through the thick fog in your descent to its open doors. A planetarium with an open ceiling has come your home in this time. You missed your comfy bed, but a hammock under the stars surrounded by those you now held dear was just as nice. You enter the building, breath fleeing as your snatched from behind. Not a step through the door and you're suspended in the air at the waist by hanging vines.
"And just where have you been, my sneaky little pest?"
Thorn-like claws grace your cheek, curving up to the crown of your head where they cautiously prod at your sensitive antennae. Amused, they chitter in delight as you struggle in your blinds - most likely held by another member of the collective. Beyond the palms of their woven hands, this one was covered near entirely in stained prickles. Violet petals spiked from the upper half of their hair and draped over their mocking grin
"You know you aren't allowed to leave without a guide. What ever would we do if our heart was taken by those savages, hm? I think a punishment is in order, don't you?"
"Seems so if they can't obey simple rules. With that lovely picture on knot tying they brought us the other day, I'm sure we can get up to lots of fun before the others figure out where we are."
Lowered closer to the floor, strong arms embrace you from behind and lead your head against their chest. Small, hanging buds sprouted up the lengths of their arms mark their class - their reddish yellow hue staking their typing. Cooing ever so cloyingly sweet in your ear, it rubs the humanoid half of its face against your cheek.
"You were scheduled to start the day with us. Don't you love us anymore? We may not be as approachable at the others, but we adore you all the same."
You swallow hard, trapped between a wall and thorns. "Thistle.... Honeysuckle.. but I can never find you two."
"But we're always watching. Can't let you get into trouble. Or pick a favorite. If you accept us as your guards for the rest of the week maybe we'll let you go. If not...."
The vines tighten around your hips - released almost instantly as they're snipped by an unseen party. You stumble forward, caught and picked up by another pair of arms.
"What have I told you two about picking on them? One more time and I'm sending you both to the greenhouse.... Are you alright, darling?"
Bright as the golden sun, their petals almost blind you as you look up. The leader, and the first floral creature you met - Marigold was your sworn protector even from those with you in their care. A strict, yet understanding calm to the storm life in the compound was. As they set you down, Thistle scoffs.
"Always the spotlight stealer. Would you keep it down before the others realized they've returned?"
It's a bit too late for that.
"Y/n? Y/n back?!"
"Oh, I was so worried I fear I may start wilting!"
"Y/n, Y/n! We have a ripe patch of peaches for you!"
From the shadows of the trees and handmade structures comes the entire horde. They push through each other getting to you and overwork your brain with their chatter. Over a dozen bodies crowded around your lone figure. Through the sea, the shortest of them swims through the crowd and manages their way up to you - head centered at your navel. Head cocked, they seem to be staring to your lips.
"Cuckoo? Is everything alright?"
They smile. Grabbing your shirt, you're bent forward into an open mouth kiss. All the commotion ceases immediately as a wave of surprises washes over them all. Patting the walls of your cheeks their segmented tongue, Cuckoo only pulls away when they're torn from you. Lifting the smaller flower by its shoulders, Thistle clenches their teeth tight.
"What on earth was that?"
The question was genuine. None of them were fully traversed in the act of kissing beyond brief tellings in the books you brought to learn more about the planet left behind for them. Agriculture and construction were common reads, but if they got lucky you'd find old story books, comics and novels. Cuckoo holds up a page from one of those very stories - the couple displayed entangled in a heat of passion with lips locked. Heads staring over their shoulder snap in your direction. You'd used the direction to scramble away and travel further into their lair.
"I wanna try..."
Even Marigold couldn't save you now. Taking advantage of your gift of flight, you dart into the air aiming for the second floor where your bedroom stood.
"I would love to help you all, but I need to get started on my letter for my queen. She has requested more pollen, and I wasn't able to get one out in the last run. As soon as it's out of the way, I can come back and we can - Ah!"
Fashioning a lasso from their vines, you're dragged down into the frenzy with no escape in the near future. As is your life with the horde.
-
A queen sits alone on her throne. Letter opener gripped in her palm, she stabs it though her throne as the words describing your escapade slash through her heart. Stomping the battered floor, her veil of submission cracks.
"This has gone on for too long. My garden is in shambles and so will this kingdom until their return."
The servant at her feet keeps their voice low. "My queen... Their service there is doing quite the opposite. Our reserves are at maximum capacity and with the treaty there's no need for war and needless casualties. I know of your bond and I am sorry for your lost."
Like an arrow, the queen's dagger rips through the air and anchors in the wall behind the servant. Golden blood beads in a line across their cheek. Unbridled rage and disgust seeps from her icy glare like poison. She refuses to look directly in their eye, staring off at the shoulders behind them.
"Get. This. Traitor- OUT. RIP THEIR WINGS AND LEAVE THEM FOR DEAD. if they aren't on my wall by dawn, I will take yours as payment."
Eyes wide, the servant lunges for her robes as the guards take their arms. "My lady, please! You cannot do this! I was trying to make things better! Y/n will never forgive you!"
She spits.
"And cut out their tongue."
Screams echoing down the halls, the queen curls up in her throne - clutching the pillow you kept every night and the flower you sent in your distress. Her sweet idiot of a bumblebee. Why did you have to run off? Sure she was stressed, but with her prized florist and sweet little bumblebee she could've conquered the universe. Someday you'll be in her arms and garden again - laughing the night and dawn away.
Someday

NPR has suspended Uri Berliner, the senior editor who published a bombshell essay a week ago that claimed that the publicly funded outlet has “lost America’s trust” by approaching news stories with a left-wing bias.
NPR media writer David Folkenflik revealed on Tuesday that Berliner beginning on Friday was suspended for five days without pay. Folkenflik, who reviewed a copy of the letter from NPR brass, said the company told the editor he had failed to secure its approval for outside work for other news outlets — a requirement for NPR journalists.
NPR called the letter a “final warning,” saying Berliner would be fired if he violated NPR’s policy again.
Neither NPR nor Berliner immediately responded to requests for comment.
Berliner is a dues-paying member of NPR’s newsroom union, but Folkenflik reported that the editor is not appealing the punishment.
Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist who has worked at NPR for 25 years, called out journalistic blind spots around major news events, including the origins of COVID-19, the war in Gaza and the Hunter Biden laptop, in an essay published Tuesday on Bari Weiss’ online news site the Free Press.
The fallout from the essay sparked outrage from many of his colleagues. Late Monday afternoon, NPR chief news executive Edith Chapin announced to the newsroom that executive editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.
The fiasco also ignited a firestorm of criticism from prominent conservatives — with former President Donald Trump demanding NPR’s federal funding be yanked — and has led to internal tumult, the New York Times reported Friday.
NPR’s new chief executive Katherine Maher defended NPR’s journalism, calling Berliner’s article “profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning,” The 42-year-old exec added that the essay amounted to “a criticism of our people on the basis of who we are.”
Folkenflik said Berliner took umbrage at that, saying she had “denigrated him.” Berliner said he supported diversifying NPR’s workforce to look more like the US population at large. Maher did not address that in a subsequent private exchange he shared with Folkenflik for the story.
The fiasco soon put the spotlight on Maher, whose own left-leaning bias came to light in a trove of woke, anti-Trump tweets she penned.
In January, when Maher was announced as NPR’s new leader, The Post revealed her penchant for parroting the progressive line on social media — including bluntly biased Twitter posts like “Donald Trump is a racist,” which she wrote in 2018.
That hyper-partisan message was scrubbed from the platform now known as X, but preserved on the site Archive.Today.
It’s unclear when Maher deleted it, or if its removal was tied to her new gig.
Other woke posts remain on Maher’s X account. In 2020, as the George Floyd riots raged, she attempted to justify the looting epidemic in Los Angeles as payback for the sins of slavery.
“I mean, sure, looting is counterproductive,” Maher wrote on May 31, 2020.
“But it’s hard to be mad about protests not prioritizing the private property of a system of oppression founded on treating people’s ancestors as private property.”
The next day, she lectured her 27,000 followers on “white silence.”
“White silence is complicity,” she scolded. “If you are white, today is the day to start a conversation in your community.”
The NPR job is Maher’s first position in journalism or media.
She was previously the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, the San Francisco-based nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, after holding communications roles for the likes of HSBC, UNICEF and the World Bank.
Maher earned a bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern and Islamic studies from New York University, according to her LinkedIn account, and grew up in Wilton, Conn. — a town that her mother, Ceci Maher, now represents as a Democratic state senator.

Reading time 📖
Tumblr media
It's not often I share my hobbies outside of writing but, since it's fairly quiet as I work on multiple fics simultaneously, I might as well.
As you see, I've bought myself two works - the controversial "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov in English and "Maus" by Art Spiegelman, which is the more controversial text. I'll explain why shortly.
Let's start with "Lolita" since it's easier to talk about. I bought this book after listening to the video analysis by the creator Horses (link to the video here) to develop my own opinion about it. The book is both a memoir and statement for the judge written by the protagonist, convicted of abducting and assaulting a twelve year old girl - the titular "lolita". It has been misinterpreted as praise or glorification of pedophilic tendencies, but it is - just as "Crime And Punishment" by Fiodor Dostojewski but without the retribution - an analysis of a criminal's mind.
I'm looking forward to the lecture of Humbert Humbert's attempt to justify his behaviour to the world, the opposite of what I feel towards "Maus".
My payment of the 80 zł ( around 20$, 19€ or 16£) I spent on this collection of comics was a reluctant one. The premise is harmless enough (for lack of a better term). This set of comics describes the life and experiences of the author's father during the Holocaust, with a twist - here, the characters are portrayed as animals based on their ethnicity. The Jews are mice, and the Germans - cats. Simple idea of predator and prey, of the murder and the victim. But there are also other nationalities. Americans are noble dogs, the Swedes are reindeer, the Gypsies are moths, the British are fish (though I'm not sure why) and their southern neighbours are - as comedic tradition dictates - frogs.
What about the Poles then? They are swine.
What's more, the book's antipolonism shows time and time again. Poles are portrayed as antisemitic, cooperative towards the German occupants, impulsive, violent and cruel. There is little positive mention of them, and Spiegelman himself admitted that his father had little good to say about his countrymen and did nothing to give the nation justice. The incidents of wartime and post-war antisemitism are not portrayed as single crimes punishable by law, but as ordinary and acceptable occurrences.
Normally I enjoy delving into the annals of the second world war's horrific history, but unlike the other books I've read so far, this one seems to be written with a political intent, debatable as it is. Maus seems to share the same contemptible niche in Polish culture as Neighbours and Golden Harvest, alongside all of the other detestable excuses of historical journalism by Jan T. Gross. What these works share is their - subliminal or not - distrust and borderline disgust towards Poles as a nation. I am planning to review both books when I'm done with them here on the blog (regardless of whether there is any interest in it), so I will save my "ammunition", as they say, for then. I will however mention that the nation is, in terms of Righteous Amongst The Nations awards, the leader with exactly 7177 awards granted, the Netherlands second in with 5910. This is telling just by itself, doesn't it? Regardless, every experience is valuable, even if the author's intentions are questionable.
Again, I know this is far more serious than my usual content, consisting of silly x reader fics, but I find them interesting enough to mention. I hope you don't mind!

“Random occurrences cannot explain such devastation, nor can this honestly be called regrettable “collateral damage.” To believe that is to willfully suspend belief and to ignore the nature of the weapons used—and, equally important, it is to ignore Israel’s established military doctrine. The wholesale killing and mangling of over thirteen thousand people, most of them defenseless civilians, and the wanton destruction of the homes and property of hundreds of thousands of people, are in fact fully intentional. They are the fruits of a sinister strategy implemented by the Israeli military at least since the 2006 assault on Lebanon, which goes by the name “Dahiya doctrine.” The doctrine was revealed publicly by Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, who was head of the Northern Command in 2006, and who has been deputy chief of staff of the so-called Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Israeli army, since 2013. After an entire southern suburb of Beirut, known as the Dahiya, had been devastated from the air by troops under his command using two-thousand-pound bombs and other similar ordnance, Eizenkot explicitly laid out what this doctrine entailed in 2008. He stated: “What happened in the Dahiya quarter of Beirut in 2006 will happen in every village from which Israel is fired on. . . . We will apply disproportionate force on it and cause great damage and destruction there. From our standpoint, these are not civilian villages, they are military bases. . . . This is not a recommendation. This is a plan. And it has been approved.”[6] Not only was the strategy precisely the one Israel used in Lebanon in 2006, it is the very same that has now been deployed against Gaza for the third time in the past six years. Israeli military correspondents and security analysts repeatedly reported that the Dahiya doctrine was Israel’s strategy throughout the war in Gaza this past summer.[7] Let us be frank: this is actually less of a strategic doctrine than it is an explicit outline of collective punishment and probable war crimes. Not surprisingly, one found little mention of the Dahiya doctrine whether in statements by U.S. politicians, or in the reporting of the war by most of the mainstream American media, which dwelt on the description of Israel’s actions as “self-defense.” The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 specifies that U.S.-supplied weapons must be used “for legitimate self-defense.”[8] Given this provision of the law, when U.S. officials from the president on down describe Israel’s operations in Gaza as self-defense, they may be doing more than just parroting the line rigorously laid down by Israel and its supporters. They are perhaps also saying this in order to escape legal liability under U.S. law and to avoid potential prosecution for war crimes, alongside the Israeli officials responsible for giving the orders, and the officers and soldiers who actually pull the trigger.”

«Suppose Russia – a nuclear power – is not punished for unleashing the bloodiest war in Europe since 1945. In that case, we will witness disastrous consequences for global security and the political-economic order for decades to come. The lessons China will learn from this conflict will encourage it to pursue its own revanchist ambitions. Global nuclear proliferation is likely to occur as the foundations of international law will be severely damaged for a long time.»
— Dr. Maria Domańska, senior fellow at the Warsaw-based Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW), writing at the journal New Eastern Europe.
That paragraph in an extended essay on Russia's stability indirectly reminds us of a consequence of Russia getting its way in Ukraine.
In 1994 under terms of the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in return for security commitments by Russia, the US, and the UK.
Obviously Putin violated the Budapest Memorandum in addition to other treaties and agreements regarding Ukraine's security. That raises the question: Would Russia have invaded if Ukraine still had those nuclear weapons? Almost certainly not.
Other countries with the potential to go nuclear may be thinking that the only sure way to preserve their independence is to develop nuclear weapons. However, if the Russian invaders are driven out of Ukraine then these countries would take notice of how a nuclear power was pushed back by using only non-nuclear weapons.
So a Ukrainian victory is crucial to prevent future proliferation of nuclear weapons.

(The Audio begins with the creak of an office chair's wheels) Lydia: Phew...finally got out of the rain...what? ED-E: <Annoyed Trill> Lydia: Oh, please, ED-E. I repaired your casing myself, it is water tight. Your internals are perfectly safe. ED-E: <A series of low-volume beeps and trills> Lydia: Mumble mumble mumble! Don't act like you're mad at me. I didn't intend to get captured by a madman or teleported to a science facility. ED-E: <Shrill beeping and electronic buzzing> Lydia: ED-E are you jealous of my ARMOR of all things?! Stealth Suit Mk2: I think we make a good team, he lets you see invisible monsters, and I make you invisible. Synergy! Lydia: Exactly! With your stealth technology and ED-E's enhanced sensors we're damn near unstoppable! You have nothing to be jealous about ED-E. ED-E: <Surprisingly pouty trill, after a brief silence he beeps happily.> Lydia: Atta boy...I know it's a sudden adjustment, but you're always going to be a valued friend to me. Now I need to get this log done.
We've settled down in a Vault for a bit, it's raining quite heavily and there was a lot of lightning in the sky. ED-E was getting a little nervous, since he floats a bit high and is made entirely of metal. I don't know much about Vaults, beyond the fact that Doc Mitchel gave me a suit from Vault-21 and some mentions in Big Mountain. I'm curious about the story behind this one, the door was open and there were skeletons laying just inside.
Something else too, there's a ton of fucking posters on the walls in the room I'm having a sit down in. Looks like this Vault elected their leader, Overseer. Looks like the candidates are Haley Stone and Nate Glover. But an interesting note, based on the wording of the posters being the Overseer is viewed as a punishment. I'm eager to learn more, so I might spend a while investigating and gathering what I can.
Regardless, I visited a place called Black Mountain, where I met a Super Mutant named Neil. He warned me not to go up the mountain, since it was home to hostile super mutants, but I offered to help him take down the super mutant running things in order to clear out the danger. It was a hard fight, but I made it up the mountain and killed Tabitha, the Nightkin running the show. I feel like there was an alternative...I fixed found a machine that needed repairs and, once I did so, it woke up and claimed to be Rhonda. Based on terminal logs and other things I found, it was Tabitha's best friend. Unfortunately it became hostile when I told it she was dead and I was forced to destroy it. That said, I did manage to free a Ghoul named Raul. He was pretty passive aggressive but gave me the location of his shack if I ever needed his services.
Anyway, I'm gonna get to searching this Vault and figuring out what this whole election thing is. It's got my curiosity stirred up quite a bit, hopefully ED-E won't have trouble getting around...thankfully the ceilings are pretty high. Anyway, that's all for this log. Here's hoping a few terminals or journals survived so I don't have to infer a buncha shit with no proof.
(The audio briefly cuts before resuming.)
Turns out the posters are mentioning three different people: Henry Glover, who seems like a decent guy…real family man type. Donna Haley, who appears to have been accused of adultery and communist sympathies based on the posters, and finally, Nathan Stone…who seems to think he's on the ballot because of backroom politicking.
Now, interestingly, the next log on this terminal indicates some murders happened and they want to make THAT person Overseer…based on Pre-War culture that likely means the Overseer position results in the death of said overseer. Now the final log on this computer is from the new Overseer, Katherine Stone, likely the wife of Nathan. She's done away with the election process and opted for picking the new Overseer via random number generator. So the Overseer, despite apparently being a death sentence, still has the power to set policy!
The plot thickens, hopefully I will have the full story by the time I make tomorrow's log.
